Carla Gugino has been tapped to play Hollywood screen legend Vivien Leigh in the forthcoming biopic “The Florist.”
The film is directed by Nick Sandow (star of “Orange is the New Black”) and will explore Leigh’s struggle with bipolar disorder in the 1960s, as she prepares to lead the Broadway production of John Gielgud’s Chekhov adaptation of “Ivanov.” Screenwriter Jayce Bartok (“The Cake Eaters”) put the script together based on a box of love letters.
Leigh earned her place in cinema history as Scarlett O’Hara, the central character in 1939’s “Gone With the Wind,” opposite Clark Gable. Leigh also played the landmark role of Blanche DuBois opposite Marlon Brando in 1951’s “A Streetcar Named Desire.”
“I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to excavate a woman as complex, contradictory, and compelling as Vivien. From the moment I read the script, I knew ‘The Florist’ was a journey I had to pursue,...

Lena Waithe can’t be anymore direct when talking about “A Thousand and One,” writer-director A.V. Rockwell’s feature film debut.
“Films like this oftentimes are not always seen or recognized by the Academy,” says Waithe, a producer on the Sundance Film Festival winner. The film follows Inez (Teyana Taylor), a woman recently released from prison who kidnaps her son from the foster care system. “For us, that is the Super Bowl and with this little engine that can, we hope to make it all the way to the big game because the movie is worthy of that screenplay, direction, performance and film. And I hope people really show the film the respect deserves.”
Variety caught up with Waithe and Rockwell over a Zoom call on the morning after the Gotham Awards, where Rockwell won in the category of breakthrough director.

There are some fascinating names behind A24‘s dark comedy, Death of a Unicorne, beyond stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. Not only is it produced by Ari Aster, but horror master John Carpenter will compose music for the film.
In Death of a Unicorne, “A father (Rudd) and daughter (Ortega) accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss (Richard Grant) seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties.”
The dark comedy marks writer/director Alex Scharfman’s directorial debut.
Award-winning filmmaker and composer John Carpenter (Halloween), Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies will compose music for the film.
The dark comedy has fantasy elements baked into the plot, but with Aster and Carpenter involved, it feels like a safe bet that Death of a Unicorne might dip further into genre territory than first glance.

Among the dozen Emmy Awards “Game of Thrones” collected in 2019 for its final season was one for casting, which made it the first drama program to achieve a third victory in that category. Each time it was honored there, it also won Best Drama Series, setting a precedent that “Succession” could emulate this year after having taken both prizes in 2020 and 2022. Although it is heavily favored to clinch the top honor again, its potential casting win might not come as easily or at all, given the remarkably stiff competition it faces from “The White Lotus.”
After winning 10 Emmys in 2022 while classified as a limited series, “The White Lotus” is now competing in seven specific drama series categories, including casting. Its genre shift was triggered by its second season’s incorporation of previously established characters. As it goes against “Succession” in this race, it will also have to fend off two-time winner “The Crown,...

Andrew Garfield became an A-lister after starring in films like The Amazing Spider-Man and The Social Network.
But before either of those features, Garfield thought another earlier film would be his key to superstardom.

One of Garfield’s first movies was the 2007 political thriller Lions for Lambs. The film featured an ensemble cast that included Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep, and Michael Pena.
Garfield was able to find himself starring with such powerhouses thanks to an audition tape that wasn’t even for the feature. Initially, Garfield sent in the tape to a movie that ended up not being made.
“Eventually the tape of my test went to Avy Kaufman, who is a fantastic casting director, and she was casting the Redford movie and brought me in. Things kind of went from there. It was amazing spending time...

The casting branch of the academy is a year shy of a decade old and still doesn’t have an Oscar category of its own. However, the Casting Society has been handing out the Artios Awards for 37 years (“Artios” is from the ancient Greek meaning “perfectly fitted.”).

Many of the leading Academy Awards contenders reaped bids across the various categories according to production cost. Winners will be revealed at a ceremony on March 9 (two days after the close of final Oscar voting).
Last year’s big budget winners were the comedy “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and the drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7 ” while “The Forty-Year-Old Version” and “One Night in Miami” took the equivalent prizes in the independent division. “Minari” won the low budget and “The Surrogate” the micro budget prizes while “Soul” claimed the animation award.

The Casting Society of America’s annual Artios Awards, which recognize superior achievement in the casting of film, TV and theater projects, has announced the nominees for its film categories, which range from 200 million blockbusters to low-and-micro budget titles.
Anticipated Oscar darlings such as “Elvis,” “Tar,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans” and “Glass Onion” are present along with juggernauts “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “The Batman.” “Top Gun: Maverick” is strangely absent.
But the real surprises are the smaller titles that have gotten little awards attention in races so far such as “Bros,” “Emily the Criminal,” “Armageddon Time” and “Spoiler Alert,” along with streaming titles such as AppleTV+’s “Cha Cha Real Smooth” and “Causeway,” Netflix’s “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical” and “White Noise,” and Amazon’s “Emergency” and “Catherine Called Birdy” among them.

Succession creator Jesse Armstrong, who saw his HBO series take home four Emmys overall this year including its second Outstanding Drama Series win Monday made it brief, really brief, backstage.

The path to Emmys succession has been a competitive one this year for HBO’s hit drama series “Succession,” about the goings-on of a falling media empire. With 25 nominations, it’s been the show to beat, and with major accolades for its actors for a bombshell Season 3: Jeremy Strong, Brian Cox, Nicholas Braun, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen, J. Smith-Cameron, and Sarah Snook all picked up nominations for their roles as series regulars, with a handful of guest actors nominated, from Adrien Brody to Alexander Skarsgard.
With Macfadyen, Braun, and Culkin all nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, it was a competitive field, with Macfadyen coming out on top to win the prize. During last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys two-day rollout, “Succession” nabbed the Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series honor, with the award going to Avy Kaufman and Francine Maisler.

“Succession” may be the frontrunner for Best Drama Series – leading all shows this year with a record-breaking 25 nominations – but that did not stop its fellow nominees from scoring huge wins at Sunday’s Creative Arts Emmys. While the HBO drama secured a key victory in Best Casting for Avy Kaufman and Francine Maisler, it lost major technical categories to “Euphoria,” “Squid Game,” “Severance” and “Stranger Things” – all of which nabbed multiple trophies. Though despite those losses, there is little to worry about “Succession” looking to pick up its second series win.
The family satire had 13 nominations going into the Creative Arts, seven of which were in the guest acting categories where it lost to Colman Domingo for “Euphoria” in Guest Actor and Lee Yoo-mi for “Squid Game” in Guest Actress. The former show also took advantage of the double nominations for “Succession” in editing, while the latter bested it in production design.

The moment Sheryl Lee Ralph found out that her standout role on “Abbott Elementary” had landed her an Emmy nom was immediately immortalized for all the internet to see. The casting branch of the academy is only eight years old and doesn’t have an Oscar category of its own. However, the Casting Society of America has been handing out the Artios Awards for 37 years (“Artios” is from the ancient Greek meaning “perfectly fitted.”).

Many of the leading Academy Awards contenders reaped bids across the various categories according to production cost. Winners will be revealed a virtual ceremony on March 17, which is the first day of final Oscar voting.
