Christopher Nolan has made a career for himself for his unconventional narrative structures of storytelling. His 11 films have ranged from psychological thrillers to science fiction epics to “The Dark Knight” trilogy, and have garnered a total of 36 Academy Award nominations, five of which for Nolan individually. With his latest directed epic “Oppenheimer” breaking box office records and gathering massive awards buzz since its release on July 21 by Universal Pictures, let’s break down Nolan’s five Oscar nominations for three of his movies.
Nolan’s first recognition at the Oscars came for his second feature “Memento,” based on his brother Jonathan Nolan’s short story “Memento Mori,” both released in 2001. The psychological mystery thriller written and directed by Nolan stars Guy Pearce as a man with anterograde amnesia and short-term memory loss as he tries to solve the murder of his wife. “Star Wars” is one of the biggest franchises of all time and has welcomed multiple generations to a galaxy far, far away for 45 years. George Lucas’ groundbreaking vision, which began all the way back in 1977 with “A New Hope,” changed the movie industry forever and, with that, made a mark on the Academy Awards that year with a Best Picture nomination. However, the relationship between “Star Wars” and the Oscars hasn’t always been as lovable as Han Solo and Chewie. In fact, there’s often been a touch of Vader-Luke in the conflicted dynamic between the two institutions. Here’s a breakdown of the history of every “Star Wars” movie at the Academy Awards, ranked in terms of Oscars success.
“A New Hope” (1977)
Dir: George Lucas
Starring: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness

“The Dark Knight Rises” (2012) was the only film in Christopher Nolan‘s Batman trilogy not to receive a single Oscar nomination but despite that it has had a pretty good track record at the awards. By the time of its release four of its actors already had Oscars: Christian Bale (“The Fighter”), Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”), Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”) and Michael Caine (“Hannah and Her Sisters” and “The Cider House Rules”). Then Anne Hathaway won an Oscar for “Les Miserables,” which opened the same year. This year’s Oscars turned out to be pretty good for “The Dark Knight Rises” too, especially for Gary Oldman, the erstwhile Commissioner Gordon who just won Best Actor for “Darkest Hour.” Check out the complete list of Oscar winners here.

The 90th Academy Awards has concluded and I think a lot of movie geeks are happy with the way things played out! I couldn't be more excited to see Guillermo del Toro win Best Director and his film The Shape of Water win Best Picture of the year!
We also saw Gary Oldman win Best Actor, which he definitely deserved! Frances McDormand, took home the Best Actress Award and Sam Rockwell won for Best Supporting Actor for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Then there was Jordan Peele, who won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out, which so freakin' cool!
Personally, the one film that I didn't think should have won was Call Me By Your Name for Best Adapted Screenplay. Molly's Game, Logan, Mudbound, and The Disaster Artist were all better films with better scripts!
Below you'll find a full list of the nominees with the winners bolded. Are you happy with the winners?...

Jibes on Harvey Weinstein, President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and the envelope-gate controversy were the star attractions of Jimmy Kimmel's opening monologue. Image: Twitter/JimmyKimmelLive Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan's war drama Dunkirk won top sound honours. The film won the gold statue in -- Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing category. Gregg Landaker, Gary A. Rizzo and Mark Weingarten picked the Best Sound Mixing honour for the film, and Alex Gibson and Richard King took the Best Sound Editing trophy. The film, which has also been written by Nolan, brings the story of Operation Dynamo as it unfolds on land, sea and air. Icarus, which was about doping in Russian sports, and helmed by director Bryan Fogel, was named as the Best Documentary (Feature). Meanwhile, Coco was named as Best Animated Feature Film at the Oscars 2018, and co-director Lee Unkrich dedicated the honour to the people and culture of Mexico, saying "representation matters". Filmmaker James Ivory became the oldest Oscar winner at 89 for his adapted screenplay for Call Me By Your Name. The screenplay of the gay romance movie, directed by Luca Guadagnino, is based on the eponymous novel by Andre Aciman. Jordan Peele won an Oscar for Original Screenplay, with Get Out. Best Supporting Actor Actor Sam Rockwell won his first Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. He was up against Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project), Woody Harrelson (Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri), Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water) and Christopher Plummer (All the Money in the World) for the award. Helmed by Martin McDonagh, the film is about a mother who, when the police in her town fail to find a suspect in her daughter's murder, purchases three billboards to call public attention to the unsolved crime. Meanwhile, actor Allison Janney took home her first Oscar in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category for her powerful performance in I, Tonya. She was in the race to win the coveted trophy with Mary J. Blige (Mudbound), Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread), Laurie Metcalfe (Lady Bird) and Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water). Best Actor Gary Oldman won the Best Actor Oscar for Darkest Hour, for his portrayal of Winston Churchill, which involved daily four-hour makeup sessions. For Oldman, it was his second nomination in the Actor in a Leading Role category. He was previously nominated for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in 2011. While accepting the award, Oldman said: "I've lived in America for the longest time, and I am deeply grateful to her for the loves and the friendships I have made and the many wonderful gifts it has given me. My home, my livelihood, my family, and now Oscar." On the other hand, Frances Mcdormand won the Oscar for Best Actress, for her role in Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri. She was given the award for essaying the role of Mildred, a woman with a burning sense of injustice over the police failure to find the killer of her daughter. 60-year-old McDormand pipped, among others, The Post star Meryl Streep, who scored her 21st nomination and the 17th in this category at the Oscars. McDormand left an impact with her acceptance speech after she asked every female nominee in the room to stand up and asked male gatekeepers to ask them about their projects and ideas not just at Oscar after-parties, but in office meetings following awards season. The biggest craft stories of the 90th Academy Awards: Cinematographer Roger Deakins finally winning the Oscar (after 14 nominations) for “Blade Runner 2049,” and the Denis Villeneuve-directed “Blade Runner” sequel upsetting “War for the Planet of the Apes” for VFX.
Deakins, the greatest cinematographer of his generation, was honored at long last for his naturalistic brilliance, making the “Blade Runner” universe adapt to his aesthetic, and putting his unmistakable imprint on every visual aspect, including VFX. And “Blade Runner 2049” honored the legacy of Ridley Scott’s iconic original by limiting green screen, keeping sets close to camera, and making it look photographic. Yet the sequel also offered a major step in digital human animation with the recreation of Sean Young’s Rachael replicant.
However, with a third consecutive VFX loss for “Apes,” the Academy once again denied Weta Digital the Oscar for its remarkable Caesar (Andy Serkis) and Bad...

The 90th Annual Academy Awards were held on Sunday night, March 4, hosted for the second year in a row by Jimmy Kimmel. The Emmy winning comedian and host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” impressed with his hosting duties in 2017, but that ceremony is probably best remembered for its twist ending: “La La Land” was announced as the winner for Best Picture, but minutes later it was revealed that the wrong winner had been announced and that “Moonlight” was the rightful victor. Was the 2018 Best Picture outcome just as shocking? Scroll down for our live updating report and analysis of the winners as they happened.
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” was the front-runner for Best Picture going into Oscar night after winning top prizes at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and BAFTAs. But close behind was “The Shape of Water,” the winner at the Producers Guild, Directors Guild and Critics’ Choice Awards.

“Dunkirk” is the heavy favorite to win Oscars for Best Sound Editing (for Richard King and Alex Gibson) and Best Sound Mixing (for Gregg Landaker, Gary Rizzo and Mark Weingarten). These two fields are some of the most misunderstood at the Oscars, by audiences, by some voters and, admittedly, by some awards pundits like me. But because war movies like “Dunkirk” give audiences so much to hear — explosions, gunshots, jet engines, dialogue and dramatic music — they tend to win awards in these categories.
Sound mixers record and adjust the levels of different sound elements, while editors assemble those elements, from dialogue to sound effects to sounds they create themselves for the production. Or as our Oscarologist Tim Gray (La Times) put it, “After the sound editor has assembled what the audience hears, the sound mixer determines how they hear it.” Sound experts within the motion picture academy decide who gets nominated at the Oscars,...

Christopher Nolan's World War II epic Dunkirk won the top prize for outstanding sound mixing in a live-action feature during the 54th annual Cinema Audio Society Awards for sound mixing Saturday at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel.
The award went to rerecording mixers Gregg Landaker and Gary Rizzo, production mixer Mark Weingarten, scoring mixer Alan Meyerson, Adr mixer Thomas J. O'Connell and foley mixer Scott Curtis.
Dunkirk bested a slate of nominees that also included Baby Driver, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, The Shape of Water and Wonder Woman. Dunkirk, Baby Driver, Last Jedi and Shape of Water are also nominated for the Oscar in sound mixing, along with Blade Runner 2049.

The nominations for the 2018 Academy Awards are in and Guillermo del Toro's fantastic film, The Shape of Water, did pretty damn good as it leads the pack with thirteen of the nominations! Those include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay and more. This was one of my favorite movies of the year, so it was great to see it get a lot of love.
Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk ended up with eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. Jordan Peele's Get Out also landed a few nominations including Best Director, which was cool!
As expected, James Franco and his film The Disaster Artist got snubbed amid sexual misconduct allegations surrounding the actor.

'JFK' movie with Kevin Costner as Jim Garrison 'JFK' assassination movie: Gripping political drama gives added meaning to 'Rewriting History' If it's an Oliver Stone film, it must be bombastic, sentimental, clunky, and controversial. With the exception of "clunky," JFK is all of the above. It is also riveting, earnest, dishonest, moving, irritating, paranoid, and, more frequently than one might expect, outright brilliant. In sum, Oliver Stone's 1991 political thriller about a determined district attorney's investigation of the assassination of U.S. president John F. Kennedy is a slick piece of propaganda that mostly works both dramatically and cinematically. If only some of the facts hadn't gotten trampled on the way to film illustriousness. With the exception of John Williams' overemphatic score – Oliver Stone films need anything but overemphasis – JFK's technical and artistic details are put in place to extraordinary effect. Joe Hutshing and Pietro Scalia's editing...

A memorable 87th annual Academy Awards for Fox Searchlight saw Birdman claim best film, director and two other statuettes to tie with The Grand Budapest Hotel’s four-strong haul.
Boyhood, which entered the evening on six nominations and had been expected to push Birdman in several of the senior categories on Sunday night, won a sole best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.
The film’s time in the Oscar ceremony spotlight will not be forgotten, however, as Arquette paid tribute to her “Boyhood family” and made an impassioned plea for wage equality that spread like wildfire across social media.
Eddie Redmayne from The Theory Of Everything prevailed in a tight best actor contest to deny Michael Keaton another success for Birdman. The popular victory had the British actor jumping with excitement on stage at the Dolby Theatre.

When the first Academy Awards were handed out on May 16, 1929, at an Academy banquet in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, movies had just begun to talk. The attendance was 270 and guest tickets cost $5. It was a long banquet, filled with speeches, but presentation of the statuettes was handled expeditiously by Academy President Douglas Fairbanks.
The suspense that now touches most of the world at Oscar time was not always a characteristic of the Awards presentation. That first year, the award recipients were announced to the public three months ahead of the ceremony.
Today, Oscar pundits and fans alike avidly watch the precursor and guild awards to ultimately make their predictions in the 24 categories. Academy members have cast their ballots, so now it’s our turn for our Oscar picks.
Need some help in that office Oscar pool or at the party you’re throwing at home? Wamg is here to help.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just finished announcing their nominees for the 87th Annual Academy Awards, with Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the way with nine nominations apiece, followed by The Imitation Game with eight. As usual, there were plenty of surprises to be found this morning, so let’s take a look at a few:
Selma ended up not making as grand a showing as many thought it would, nabbing only two nominations (Best Picture and Best Original Song). In a shocking turn of events, Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl has been snubbed from Best Adapted Screenplay after being the leader throughout awards season, making it a wide-open category. Bennett Miller made a completely surprising appearance in Best Director for Foxcatcher, while Steve Carell managed to squeeze into the incredibly crowded Best Actor category. Bradley Cooper has also managed to sneak into Best Actor for American Sniper.

Complaints about the sound mix on Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” clearly didn’t have much influence on the members of the Cinema Audio Society, who on Tuesday made the film one of the five nominees for the best feature-film sound mix of 2014.
“Interstellar” joined “American Sniper,” “Birdman,” “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Unbroken” in receiving nominations for the 2014 Cas Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing, which will be presented on Feb. 14 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

Nominations have been announced for the 51st annual Cinema Audio Society Awards, and as ever with this group lately, there are a few surprises. For instance, "Unbroken" made the cut despite being mostly ignored by the guilds and industry groups so far, and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" showed up as well. The biggest jaw-dropper might just be that after months of being the poster child for sound complaints, somehow, some way, "Interstellar" ended up in the mix (no pun intended). There are always one or two that drop out, however. Last year, for example, another Marvel movie — "Iron Man 3" — was chalked up here. But it fell out in favor of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" with the Academy. I find myself wondering if "The Battle of the Five Armies" could make the cut this year as it's even more of an action/sound film than the last.

Christopher Nolan has a secret.
“You know, this is basically a film about the end of the world,” Nolan told TheWrap of his blockbuster Interstellar. “We don’t advertise it as that so much, because that makes it sound like it’s not necessarily the kind of popcorn movie people want to see during the Christmas season. But it is a film about the end of the world.”
Of course, Interstellar is about more than that. It’s about a space expedition to find a new planet for the human race as Earth is in its death throes. It’s...

We're winding down the year-in-review game here at HitFix as 2014 draws to a close. For whatever reason I took a year off of the ballot/superlatives posts, but I'm back with those personal assessments of the best of the year, beginning today with my top picks across the Academy's 24 categories. Check back in tomorrow for a list of winners from this lot, as well as others in a slew of peripheral categories. And of course, feel free to let us know what your Oscar ballot would look like in the comments section below. (Oh, and naturally it goes without saying this post is living in a parallel reality where I'm not confined to a specific branch for nominations and reign supreme over all categories with selections for each.) We'll find out if the Academy agrees with any of this when the 87th annual Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 15. *** Best...

Gregg Landaker, who served as sound re-recording mixer on Christopher Nolan's “Interstellar,” says the writer/director was a key part of the creative process. As he expained during our recent webcam chat (watch below) “Chris came up with a really cool thing when we were on the stage working with him. He came in and he brought us a YouTube video of a Go-Pro camera on a parachuter base jumping. He goes, ‘Now hear the sound of this guy rattling down inside this thing, being hit and the sound of that go-pro? That’s what I kind of want to achieve when they’re falling in their spacesuits.’" -Break- Hans Zimmer on his 'human' score for epic 'Interstellar' This three-time Oscar champ (“The Empire Strike Back," 1980; “Raiders of the Lost Ark," 1981; and “Speed," 1994) along with his partner, Gary Rizzo, worked to achieve a feeling of realism in...

Normally, by mid-November, we have a pretty good idea of many of the likely nominees in most of the crafts categories. But in this year's race for Best Sound Mixing, I see things as extremely open — there's not a single film that strikes me as assured of a spot and more than a dozen appear to have very good chances. That makes for an exciting race. This category awards the overall mix of dialogue, music, effects and "everything else" into a film's soundtrack. This is different than sound editing, which recognizes the creation and editing of artificial sound effects. Being a leading Best Picture contender can certainly help a film's chances in mixing (seen in "The Social Network," "The King's Speech" and "Moneyball" in recent years), as can being a war film, a musical or a respected (or even not-so-respected) blockbuster. There are also certain mixers who score very regularly indeed.
