A Hollywood movie career is pretty much as close as someone can get to immortality. To this day people still sit and watch classics like Citizen Kane and Casablanca despite the fact that their stars are long dead, and it’s easy to imagine that seventy years from now the hundered year old original Star Wars trilogy will be held in just as high esteem as it is now. A good movie can live forever, but sadly the same cannot be said for for the actors that appear in them. We have all seen it before and the sad reality is that we will see it again, the life of an actor snatched away well before their time. For every Christopher Lee- a man who continues to make blockbusters into his nineties- there is a James Dean, the star destined for greatness until his own mortality got in the way.

Christopher Lee, best known for his role as Saruman in The Lord Of The Rings movies, is releasing a metal record. Charlemagne: The Omens Of Death is actually his second hard-edged LP, and his second record devoted to the life of Charlemagne, the one-time Holy Roman Emperor. Lee tells The Guardian that will be “100 percent heavy metal,” and that while he’s “not screaming or anything,” it will definitely be a step further into the darkness compared to 2010’s Charlemagne: By The Sword And The Cross, which he describes as more “symphonic.” Recorded with Judas Priest guitarist Richie ...

A new issue of one the most essential film publications, La Furia Umana, is now available online. As always, alongside a rich collection of disparate texts, the issue has separate dossiers devoted to specific filmmakers, including ones on René Vautier (edited by Nicole Brenez) and Ida Lupino with Claire Denis. The amount of must-read coverage is daunting: included, too, are homages to Chris Marker and Stephen Dwoskin, a new video by David Phelps, and much more to explore.
In this issue, our pride and joy is to be found in the monograph-length dossier on Hollywood auteur William A. Wellman, a dossier edited by Gina Telaroli and Phelps. Our editor Daniel Kasman has contributed anoverview to Wellman's filmography; Telaroli has an incredible image-based piece on Good-bye, My Lady (alongside "scraps" and "findings" pointing the way for even more coverage of this filmmaker's wide oeuvre), filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier has a new piece,...

Boiling Point is not a film with high production value, pretty faces or showy effects. Boiling Point is at the heart of what the future of great filmmaking is to be, which is exactly the place it has been for some time now… in the hands of passionate indie filmmakers, not held back by a lack of budget or resources. Boiling Point is an indie film, not without it’s flaws, but rich with unrefined morsels of creative talent just waiting to be polished out from within rigid exterior.

Here.s the latest in photoshop trends: redesigning movie posters. But simply taking an existing movie and coming up with new ways to advertise it is one thing, this graphic artist has taken it a step further by re-imagining those movies in another universe. A universe where William Shatner plays Daredevil. The posters you.re about to see come from the website of artist Sean Hartter. He calls them simply .alternate universe movie posters. but to me this alternate universe looks a lot like the 70s, a very cool time-warped version of the 70s. It.s a place where Steven King.s Dark Tower series was made while Clint Eastwood was still young enough to play Roland. It.s a world where Christopher Lee was Venkman in Ghostbusters, Tim Curry played the Joker, James Dean is the dreamer in Inception, and Avatar was a porn movie starring Matthew McConaughey . Here...

Christopher Lee isn't actually a wizard, he just plays one in the movies (and sort of looks like one in real life, now that we think of it). But still, that hasn't stopped him from diving headlong into the mystical, magickal world of Wizard Rock, with a full-blown symphonic concept album he's calling Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross.
And, yes, we know the real Charlemagne wasn't technically a wizard (just the subject of an awesome Steely Dan song and most of the Hold Steady's Separation Sunday) but Lee's album is still a prime example of bearded, bong-glazed Wizard Rock, full of trilling strings and rolling timpani drums, songs with titles like "The Iron Crown of Lombardy" and "The Bloody Verdict of Verden," and Lee's booming voice, which, much like the legendary Sword of Erdrick, is strong enough to cleave even the heartiest of steel. Not to mention, you know,...

Definitely chalk this one up as rumour for now, in fact forget the chalk, use high-vis paint instead. The latest story doing the rounds on the net is the triumphant return of cat-stroking master criminal Ernst Stavro Blofeld to the world of James Bond.
According to The Guardian online (who in turn are quoting the Daily Express), British actor Michael Sheen is currently in talks to play the super villain in Bond 23, presumably with an adjusted role as the shadowy leader of terrorist organisation, Quantum.
“Michael is hot property right now and it is felt that he’s the right man to bring Blofeld back to life,” an unnamed source told the Daily Express newspaper. “Michael was a Bond fan in his youth, so this would be a dream role for him.”
In the original novels and earlier movies, Blofeld was the mastermind behind international crime syndicate Spectre and has...
