Unholy undertaker, evil philosopher, denizen of dreams and hallucinations, Coffin Joe, with his trademark top hat, black cape, and long talon-like fingernails is a horror icon in his native Brazil. Revered as a national boogeyman, Coffin Joe has been immortalized in films, TV shows, radio programs, and comic books. He is the creation of writer-director-star Jose Mojica Marins, whose perversely original and strangely personal filmmaking style has been compared to an unholy blend of Mario Bava, Luis Bunuel, and Russ Meyer.

One of the big sources of excitement within the horror community these last couple weeks has been the persistent rumors of a long-awaited sequel to Beetlejuice, with both Michael Keaton and Winona Rider expressing their interest in being a part of the ghost with the most’s return to the big screen. Will it ever actually happen? Only time will tell. But if it does, it’ll be a follow-up over 25 years in the making – a long time to wait for a sequel, don’t ya think?!
Well, it wouldn’t be the first time us horror fans have had to wait a couple decades for a sequel. In fact, we’ve waited a whole lot longer than that. Just how long, you ask? Let’s take a look at the ten horror sequels that took longer than any others to find their way into our lives!

The visit of Jose Mojica Marins (Ze do Caixao/Coffin Joe) was by far the best thing Feratum 2013 offered. It was incredible and I had the luck to stay close to him in Tlalpujahua first and later in my hometown Mexico City, where the complete Ze do Caixao trilogy was screened (on October 8). Mojica Marins was a participant of pretty much every Feratum event: you could see him at the opening and closing/award ceremony or even just walking the streets of Tlalpujahua together with one of his sons (I saw them once, at the public plaza). Three Mojica Marins events happened during his first ever visit to Mexico: a press conference, the "masters of horror master class" (alongside Gary Pullin and Rodrigo Gudiño) and a...

More than a decade before Freddy Krueger and his knife-hands existed, another sadistic and maniacal monster roamed the cinematic screens in Brazil. Jose Mojica Marins is the writer, director, and actor most commonly known in horror circles as Coffin Joe. Coffin Joe’s legacy all started with At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul in 1964, the first film in a trilogy of terror-filled tales all starring the man himself. He often addresses the viewer directly in his films, bringing us into the screen and completely immersing us in the horrors of his world. What is truly remarkable about Coffin Joe’s films is threefold: he started making horror and exploitation very early on; he made extremely controversial films in a deeply religious (Catholic) country; and his mode of filmmaking was 100% Diy. Not only did Coffin Joe direct, write, and star in all of his films, but he also handled most...

It doesn't matter if you're a black swan or a white swan; we're sure you're going to want to bring home the dementedness that is Natalie Portman's Oscar-winning performance in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan.
The film also stars Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Barbara Hershey and Winona Ryder. If you live in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco or Chicago, you can participate in the Black Swan Experience on April 2nd.
Since Scream 4 is coming out in theaters shortly, it is only appropriate that the Scream trilogy is being re-released in glorious Blu-ray. First, the raw numbers: this is director and writer Gareth Edwards’ first feature, the movie cost a purported $15,000, internationally speaking the film has grossed over 1.5 million dollars, this is the one film you need to see this fall.
One of the spectacular aspects of a movie that is labeled sci-fi even though we only really glimpse the science of the fiction at the very beginning and then near the end which, really, is the crowning achievement of this little film that could, is that this movie exists at all. Actor Scoot McNairy, last seen in the very sweet and gentile film In Search of a Midnight Kiss, and his co-star Whitney Able are essentially starring in a film where...

Gritty. Hallucinogenic. Ultra violent. Disturbing, uncomfortable, and frequently touching on brilliance, Dennison Ramalho's Ninjas is a major step forward from the Brazilian film maker who first generated cult notice with Love From Mother Only. In more recent years Ramalho won notice as the screen writer and chief assistant director on Coffin Joe revival picture Embodiment of Evil and while Ninjas makes it clear why the iconic Jose Mojica Marins would find Ramalho an appealing collaborator it also makes it clear that he is a unique talent with a voice all his own.
Ninjas is the story of Jailton, an honest cop patrolling the slums of one of the worlds wildest and most impoverished cities. That it's a chaotic, uncontrolled place doesn't make Jailton feel any better when he guns down an innocent child while in pursuit of a gang banger and that guilt grows to a full on haunting...

With vampires all the rage and a cinema smitten with mind-bending narratives built around the generic staple of the “unreliable narrator,” what better time is there to have a look at Czech director Jaromil Jires’ provocative 1970 cult film Valerie and Her Week of Wonders?
First coming to the world’s attention with his 1963 debut feature The Cry (exhibited at Cannes), a film of documentary realism and social criticism that displeased his native government, Jires found his talents put on hold as Czechoslovakia’s state-supported film industry turned down script after script he subsequently submitted for production. It wasn’t until 1968 that Jires reappeared on the scene with The Joke, adapted from the novel by Milan Kundera as an ambitious drama attacking totalitarianism.
I’ve yet to see either of those films, but based on what I discovered with Valerie, I’d be eager to explore more of his works. While...

24/7 movie channels are good for a lot of things -- insomnia, recording, catching up with blockbusters you didn't want to spend half a C-note to see, etc. -- but often they exhume rarities you wouldn't otherwise see or even otherwise have heard about. For starters: IFC's week-long tribute to eccentric Brazilian horror auteur Jose Mojica Marins. (And Sophia Loren's U.S. debut isn't bad either.)...
