The state of horror in 2023 is strong. Familiar names such as Brandon Cronenberg and Eli Roth returned with "Infinity Pool" and "Thanksgiving" and so did "Re-Animator" screenwriter Dennis Paoli, writer of "Suitable Flesh," his first realized feature script in over 20 years. Old franchises returned, too, with "Evil Dead Rise" and even "Saw X" doing well critically and commercially. Less established filmmakers have also made an impression, namely Nahnatchka Khan, director of "Totally Killer," and Danish debut filmmaker Gabriel Bier Gislason, who helmed "Attachment."
But away from "M3GAN," "When Evil Lurks" and the numerous other highlights, there were still some disappointments that were lackluster, recycled, underplayed, overplayed, or in one or two cases, just underwhelming in almost every aspect of production. There is little pleasure to be had in chronicling such disappointment, but it is a service any critic must provide at one time or another. So let's dig into some...

When it was released in 2022, The Russo Bros.' spy thriller "The Gray Man," based on the 2009 novel by Mark Greaney, boasted the largest budget of any Netflix film to date, costing the studio about $200 million. "The Gray Man" was a flippant action flick that starred Ryan Gosling as a skilled CIA assassin nicknamed Sierra Six, after the ultra-secret Sierra program that trained him. Sierra Six, on an early mission, learns from the now-independent Sierra Four (Callan Mulvey) that there may be some active corruption or malfeasance in the Sierra program, and goes rogue, searching for the truth. Six's boss Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton) hires the kooky, ultra-violent Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans) to track him down. Ana De Armas also appears as a CIA agent named Dani Miranda.
"The Gray Man" was reviewed generally poorly, fetching a mere 45% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film, for all its expensive bombast and dazzling star power,...

Children of the Corn is a new adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel, this time by Shudder and directed by Kurt Wimmer.
An adaptation shaped for the modern “sensibility” towards King’s novel, which raises philosophical questions about whether “any time in the past was better”.
I have never read such negative reviews about a film.
Movie Review
Could they have saved themselves the effort of making it? The answer is a resounding “yes”. It’s just another horror telefilm and which with this supposed regeneration of the tale – without covering any new ground – loses almost everything quitessential from the novel and destroys everything that the 1984 film had about it that was good.

Stephen King‘s 1977 short story inspired an entire Children of the Corn franchise nearly a dozen deep, each new entry drifting further away from the source material. Writer/Director Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium, Ultraviolet) keeps that momentum going with the franchise’s eleventh installment, an entry that bears very little in common with King’s story other than murderous kids, an abundance of corn, and a small town Nebraska setting. If only Children of the Corn 2023 connected those elements in any meaningful or logical way.
An opening sequence introduces young Eden (Kate Moyer), an orphan playing outside her Rylstone, Nebraska group home as her brother haggardly emerges from the nearby cornfield. He chooses a weapon lying about the yard, then promptly murders one of the home’s adult employees, escalating until massive efforts by authorities finally subdue him as Eden remains locked in fear. Cut to Boleyn “Bo” Williams (Elena Kampouris...

Writer/director Kurt Wimmer’s recently released take on the Stephen King short story Children of the Corn is described as being a remake, but it’s different enough from the source material and the two previous adaptations – released in 1984 and 2009 – that you could really just call it “another Children of the Corn movie”. But whatever you call it, it went over pretty well with us here at JoBlo / Arrow in the Head. You can read Tyler Nichols’ 8/10 review at This Link, watch his interview with Wimmer and stars Elena Kampouris and Kate Moyer Here, and watch him discuss the film with fellow fan Mike Conway over Here. So we’re glad to share the news that the new Children of the Corn will be receiving a VOD, DVD, and Blu-ray release soon. The VOD release date is the closest; as of March 21st you’ll be able to watch the movie Here.

Director Kurt Wimmer‘s new take on Stephen King‘s horror novel Children of the Corn first arrived in theaters earlier this month, and up next it comes to Digital on March 21.
What about physical media, you ask? We’ve learned this week that Children of the Corn 2023 will be hitting Blu-ray on May 9, 2023, with Deleted Scenes included on the disc.
The new movie is the eleventh overall installment in the long-running franchise, and the first movie in the saga since John Gulager’s Children of the Corn: Runaway in 2018.
In Wimmer’s movie, which is said to have very little to do with King’s novel, “Possessed by a spirit in a dying cornfield, a twelve-year-old girl in Nebraska recruits the other children in her small town to go on a bloody rampage and kill all the adults and anyone else who opposes her. They’re back. Rlje Films presents the Stephen King reboot Children of the Corn by Kurt Wimmer on 500+ screens. It’s a redo of the classic 1984 slasher-horror film about kids possessed by a demonic spirit in a dying cornfield, with bloody, rampaging results.
King’s iconic short story features a 12-year-old Nebraska girl who recruits the kids in her small town for a killing spree of all the adults, and anyone else who opposes her. A bright high schooler who won’t go along with the plan is the town’s only hope of survival. There are some new twists, in Wimmer’s version, the corn is genetically modified. Starring Elena Kampouris, Kate Moyer, Callan Mulvey and Bruce Spence.
The story is great, spawning numerous spinoffs beginning with Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice in 1992 followed by Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest in 1995. Most went direct to video.

The film Children of the Corn, based on the Stephen King short story, spawned a franchise of considerable durability, but rather dubious quality. The first film was released in 1984 and the series sputtered to a halt in 2018 after the tenth entry, Children of the Corn: Runaway. But nothing ever really dies in the corn and two years later Children of the Corn got its second reboot following the TV version in 2009.
Or rather a reboot was written and directed by Kurt Wimmer. Wimmer who has directed Equilibrium and Ultraviolet is no stranger to reboots having written the new versions of Point Break, The Thomas Crown Affair and Total Recall. But after filming it seemed to disappear back into the cornfields for three years of vague mentions of release dates that came and went.

The latest entry in the ever-growing canon of Stephen King screen adaptations is Children of the Corn, based on the horror legend’s 1977 short story of the same name. Rlje Films has today released its official trailer ahead of its theatrical premiere March 3rd.
Though Children of the Corn was already made famous thanks to the polarizing 1984 slasher flick, this new version by writer and director Kurt Wimmer is a “chilling new re-telling” of the story about a cult of children who aim to kill every adult in their small Nebraska town. While the main antagonist of the original story and the ’80s film was a nine-year-old boy named Isaac, the 2023 iteration focuses on the tween, pigtailed villain Eden (Kate Moyer).
“Prepare to witness the horrific rise of the next generation of evil,” narrates an eerie, gravelly voice at the beginning of the trailer, as we see vignettes of Eden’s blood-soaked malevolence.

"This is our world now!" Those damn kids! Rlje Films has unveiled an official trailer for Children of the Corn, a new update on the horror classic, originally based on the Stephen King story from the 1970s. It was adapted a few times before - there was the original 1984 horror movie Children of the Corn, which had a few sequels; and there was a TV movie version in 2009 for Syfy / Fox. After a few years waiting in release limbo, this 2023 update is set to open in theaters this March. Nearly three years have gone by since we first heard that Equilibrium writer/director Kurt Wimmer was at the helm of a new adaptation of the Stephen King short story Children of the Corn – and the project (which was filmed in Australia) was one of the few productions that didn’t have to shut down during the first wave of pandemic lockdowns back in early 2020. In October of 2020, the movie was given a theatrical release… in just two theatres in Sarasota, Florida. But now we finally know when those of us who didn’t see the movie in Sarasota are going to have the chance to watch it. Wimmer’s Children of the Corn has been acquired by Shudder and Rlje Films and will be getting an 18 day theatrical release beginning on March 3rd. A digital and VOD release will follow on March 21st.

While streaming services war with each other, one that’s hanging out in the background and pleasing genre fans is Shudder. The horror site is a haven for fans of terrifying content. Recently, director Kurt Wimmer wrapped filming on a remake of Stephen King’s famous story-turned-movie, Children of the Corn. Deadline has learned that Shudder and Rlje Films has picked up the movie for their exclusive distribution.
The synopsis reads,
“Based upon the short story by the horror author, and adapted by Wimmer, Children of the Corn follows a 12 year old girl in Nebraska who is possessed by a spirit in a dying cornfield. She recruits the other children in her small town to go on a bloody rampage and kill all the adults and anyone else who opposes her. A bright high schooler who won’t go along with the plan is the town’s only hope of survival.

One of the first movies to film during the early days of the pandemic back in 2020, director Kurt Wimmer‘s new take on Stephen King‘s horror novel Children of the Corn has been off the map completely for a while now, but Deadline breaks the silence this afternoon. The new movie has been acquired for March 2023 release by Rlje Films and Shudder.
Wimmer’s Children of the Corn “will hit theaters on March 3 in an 18 day theatrical window before hitting on demand and digital on March 21,” Deadline reports.
The new movie is the eleventh overall installment in the franchise, and once it’s actually released it’ll be the first movie since John Gulager’s Children of the Corn: Runaway in 2018.
Kurt Wimmer, for those who don’t recognize his name, is the director of films including the Christian Bale-starring Equilibrium and the Milla Jovovich-starring Ultraviolet. Children of the Corn...

Ryan Gosling stars and Chris Evans slouches throughout “The Gray Man,” an expensive (and expensive-looking) Netflix-produced action caper that sets the two marquee-topping actors against each other for instantly forgettable reasons.
Co-directed by “Avengers: Endgame” helmers Anthony and Joe Russo (who adapted a script from Mark Greaney’s novel with Stephen McFeely) “The Gray Man” pits Gosling’s quippy but otherwise stoic CIA hitman against Evans’s frantic (and therefore only ostensibly menacing) government contractor.
Both performers coast on their by-now well-established personas and respective assets – the Russos seem especially invested in highlighting Evans’s biceps and hips – but Gosling projects enough confidence and charm to make you want to keep watching.

The American film and television landscape may have exhausted its share of vampire slayer stories, clearing a path for refreshing twists on the subgenre to tread. Enter the new AMC+ series “Firebite,” which shakes up the mythology by setting its yarn in the Outback. It introduces fans of Blade, Buffy, and even Abraham Lincoln, to Tyson (Rob Collins) and Shanika (Shantae Barnes-Cowan), two Indigenous hunters on a quest to eradicate the last outpost of vampires in the middle of their south Australian desert town. The series’ originality stems primarily from its backdrop and the barbarous colonial past that informs it — although “Firebite” isn’t a history lesson as much as a celebration of Aboriginal agency, telling an entertaining story of a human battle against literal bloodsucking parasites, in a biting take on manifest destiny.

Yael Stone, Rob Collins, Callan Mulvey and Shantae Barnes-Cowan are the topline cast for AMC Studios and See-Saw Films’ vampire series, Firebite, now shooting in South Australia.
The brainchild of Warwick Thornton and Brendan Fletcher, the eight-part series follows two Indigenous Australian hunters, Tyson (Collins) and Shanika (Barnes-Cowan), on their quest to battle the last colony of vampires in the middle of the Sa desert.
It is set in a remote desert mining town, a hive for the last vampire stronghold shipped from Britain to Australia in 1788 by the colonial superpower to eradicate the Indigenous populations. Sheltering from the sun in the underground mines and tunnels that surround the town until the present day, the colony’s numbers and hunger is growing. War is coming. Receiving bad news is never easy, especially on your birthday.
For Melbourne director S.K Dale, turning a year older last year coincided with the news that production on his feature directorial debut Till Death had been suspended as a result of Covid-19.
“We were preparing to shoot in March 2020 and then it was my birthday when they said, ‘Sorry, we have to shut down the studio and everyone’s flying home,'” he told If.

Fortunately, production on the action thriller resumed a few months later in August and is now set for a worldwide digital launch following a US cinematic and digital release earlier this month.

It doesn’t seem like that long ago that Megan Fox was starring in the Transformers franchise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Jennifer’s Body. Innocent, guilty, who cares as long as they pay. Needless to say, it’s not the happiest of marriages.
