It's game time for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Monday night's debate, the first face-to-face showdown of an especially bitter election fight, is a big deal: It's expected to draw a Super Bowl-sized audience of as many as 100 million viewers. They will be treated to 90 nonstop, commercial-free, marathon minutes of Clinton and Trump arguing on their feet at their respective lecterns, with NBC's Lester Holt moderating. The high-stakes prep and practice sessions have been cloaked in secrecy and wrapped in expectations gamesmanship. The members of One Direction have very vocally supported their gay fans over the years, but many of those same fans are now upset at the words of support Liam Payne tweeted to Willie Robertson of "Duck Dynasty."
Robertson's dad Phil Robertson came under fire for making homophobic comments that were reported in GQ magazine, spawning boycotts of the show and his temporary suspension from the A&E hit.
"Huge love to you/your family huge respect for your business prosperities and the family values you still all behold. big fan," Payne writes to Willie Robertson on Twitter.
But after the near-immediate backlash began, he had to tweet a mea culpa. "Being a fan of someones show and the way they still hold a family together doesnt mean i am ok with all they say," writes Payne.

2014 is a mere six days old and already, we've got our first public anti-gay tirade from a quasi-celebrity.
On Sunday (Jan. 5), during an episode of the U.K.'s "Celebrity Big Brother," boxer Evander Holyfield picked up the Phil Robertson Award for Media Sensitivity when he compared homosexuality to a disability, saying that both are treatable by a doctor.
Holyfield made his scholarly comparison after reality star Luisa Zissman asked him if there were any gay boxers. He tells her he thinks so, but that nothing good would come from their coming out. "That ain't normal!" he answers. "The Bible lets you know that's wrong and that's right."
As she tries to end the conversation, realizing it was a mistake to even begin it in the first place, Holyfield presses on, moving into his "handicap" analogy. "If you were born, and your leg was turned this way,...

The main Entertainment unit’s revenues jumped 17.6% to $2B while operating income was up 1.6% to $391M. Ad sales improved by 5% with the Ncaa Division I Men’s Basketball Championship airing in Q2 vs last year when it ran in Q1. Among the most talked about film items on crowd-sourcer Kickstarter this year, Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch’s feature directorial is the type of grassroots English speaking foreign import indie flick the fest likes to make room for. God Help the Girl has been long in the works (Murdoch started writing the songs for the project in 2003) and he was lucky enough to land Emily Browning (Sleeping Beauty) for the lead with Hannah Murray and Olly Alexander (The Dish & the Spoon star we interviewed dropped a couple of musical notes on us) as supporting cast for the Glasgow shot pic which began production in the month of July.

Award-winning film-maker Thet Sambath says he has been followed, harassed and chased during his research
One of Cambodia's leading journalists and foremost researchers on the Khmer Rouge has told the Guardian he fears for his life after a two-year harassment campaign by state security forces he claims are attempting to prevent him from completing his latest film about the Killing Fields.
Award-winning film-maker Thet Sambath – whose 2009 documentary about the Khmer Rouge, Enemies of the People, was shortlisted for an Oscar – claims that uniformed soldiers and plainclothes "spies" working for the Cambodian government have repeatedly followed, harassed and chased him by car and motorbike, with the intention of "making [him] disappear".
"They are concerned I will reveal their true crime [through the new film] and … [that] their reputation will be destroyed," Sambath said. "I know too much about what really happened. They want me dead."

[Editor's Note: This was published during the 2010 edition of the Fantastia Int. Film Festival. The film was subsequently picked up by Magnolia's Magnet Releasing label and has been available on On Demand since February 4. We are republishing the article to coincide with the theatrical release on March 11.] When a film is set in 1348 during the throes of the bubonic plague, as Black Death is, and is directed by British horror master Christopher Smith (Creep, Severance, and the woefully underseen but brilliant Triangle), it's understandable that genre fans would expect wall-to-wall grisly deaths and spraying bodily fluids. But while the film has its fair share of that kind of stuff, Smith has delivered a surprisingly thoughtful philosophical treatise on religious faith, making for a truly frightening horror film that was among the best of the festival this year. A conflicted young monk named Osmund (Eddie Redmayne, Elizabeth: The Golden Age) volunteers to lead a group of knights on a fact-finding mission to a village that is rumored to not have been affected by the plague. Little does he know that the knights, led by the brooding Ulric (Sean Bean, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy's Boromir), are actually...

The plague is spreading across movie screens again, and Nicolas Cage and CG demons are nowhere in sight. Black Death, the fourth feature by British director Christopher Smith, is a more thoughtful, powerful and frightening examination of the fear engendered by the titular disease, and the evil it leads men (and women) to do. The medieval horror/adventure is available on VOD this month and opens theatrically March 11 from Magnolia Pictures’ Magnet Releasing division after winning acclaim at fests like Montreal’s Fantasia, where Fango spoke to Smith and one of his producers, Phil Robertson.

While I personally thought that director Christopher Smith’s impeccable filmmaking run took a stumble with Triangle, he came right back on form with Sean Bean in his newest release, Black Death, which lands on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK in a scant couple of weeks courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Read on for the pack shots and trailer!
From the Press Release:
From director Christopher Smith (Triangle, Severance) and with an all star cast that includes Sean Bean (Lord of the Rings), Carice van Houten (Valkyrie), Eddie Redmayne (Elizabeth - Golden Age), David Warner (Planet of the Apes), and Tim McInnerny (Severance), Black Death (review here) is a terrifying odyssey into evil.
Medieval England has fallen under the shadow of the Black Death. In this apocalyptic world, filled with fear and suspicion, a young monk called Osmund (Eddie Redmayne) is charged with leading a fearsome knight, Ulric...

The final Friday of Fantasia 2010 brought us one of the highlights of this year’s festival: director Christopher (Creep) Smith’s necromancer plague drama Black Death. Playing as the perfect accompaniment to Ken Russell’s The Devils, Black Death is a very subdued and naturalistic take on pestilence and witchcraft.
The film uses the backdrop of medieval superstition as a metaphor for modern-day religious propaganda and state sponsored fundamentalism. With influences as far ranging as In the Name of the Rose, Wicker Man, and Witchfinder General, it turned out to be a crowd pleasing and blessedly subtle take on an oft covered theme that stands out as one of the best of the sub-genre. Check out McCannibal’s Black Death review here.
The midnight showing of The Butcher Brothers' The Violent Kind was a little more hit and miss. The crowd seemed torn as large portions of the audience...

It's gonna be a good old fashioned witch hunt at the Fantasia Film Festival 2010 when Chris Smith's latest film Black Death spreads its plague and we've got two new stills to get you down with the sickness!
Fantasia Description
"Medieval England is dying, infected en masse with the first wave of bubonic plague. A fearful monastery dispatches young monk Osmund (Eddie Redmayne) to lead a witch-hunting knight (a chillingly cruel Sean Bean) and his mercenaries on a journey to a remote marsh that somehow, against all reason, has been left completely untouched by the plague. Necromancy is suspected. They arrive, and are taken in as friends by what they quickly realize is an openly pagan village. As they infiltrate the community they fully intend on destroying, terrible truths are revealed. Nothing is what it seems. And God will save no one.
With such films as Severance, Creep and Triangle...

/Film UK has just revealed this brand new image from the eagerly-waited Black Death, Christopher Smith’s follow up to Triangle that stars Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, Carice Van Houten, Rupert Friend, Kimberley Nixon and – as pictured below – Andy Nyman.
Black Death is set in medieval times and follows a band of brothers whose quest is to hunt down a necromancer against the backdrop of the first outbreak of bubonic plague in England, the film is scheduled for a cinematic release in the UK on May 28th 2010. However, as /Film UK points out, Sony (who are distributing for Revolver) have already submitted a gaggle of special features (for the DVD) to the BBFC. They include:
00:11:32:05 Bringing Black Death To Life (Featurette)
00:10:40:11 Untitled (Behind The Scenes Featurette)
00:02:10:23 Christopher Smith – Director – The Story Of Black Death (Interview)
