Actors flock to work with Todd Haynes, a filmmaker with an impeccable track record who has made a habit of drawing some of the greatest performances out of actors who already boast impressive credits, but also for discovering newer talent. In films like “Far From Heaven,” “I’m Not There” and “Carol,” he’s guided Julianne Moore, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara to Oscar nominations. He was actually the first director to cast Moore in her first leading film role in 1995’s “Safe,” and discovered Millicent Simmonds for “Wonderstruck” before her star turn in “A Quiet Place.”
In his new film “May December,” now in theaters, Haynes once again assembles an impressive ensemble. Natalie Portman plays Elizabeth, an actor who infiltrates the lives of Gracie (Moore) and Joe (Charles Melton) in order to portray the former in an upcoming movie. Though the pair are seemingly happily married they caused a scandal...

Todd Haynes will be spending the better part of his May in France. Between a career retrospective at Paris’ Centre Pompidou and the premiere of his latest film, May December, in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, the Oscar nominee will be jetting all over the country. The back-to-back events have meant Haynes has been working on his latest release while reliving the entirety of his film career, which has included Far From Heaven, Carol and Wonderstruck. Says Haynes of the retrospective, which will include a screening of May December, “It’ll be a trip.”
His latest film stars Natalie Portman as a Hollywood actress who travels to Georgia to research the life of Gracie (Julianne Moore, teaming with Haynes for the fourth time), who became tabloid fodder after she started a May-December relationship with Joe (Charles Melton), a man 23 years her junior. In advance of its Cannes premiere later this month, Todd Haynes’ latest film, “May December,” has released a first look at the new drama (via Variety).
The film, Haynes’ 10th feature, follows a pair of women (Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore) whose personal and professional lives begin to blur as they work together during the fraught production of a ripped-from-the-headlines love affair. Working from a Black List-touted script by Samy Burch with a story by Burch and Alex Mechanik, “May December” centers on a married couple whose lives begin to buckle under pressure when an actress arrives to do research for a movie about their past — including the couple’s notorious May-December tabloid romance that once gripped the nation.
Per its official synopsis, the film is set “20 years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, Gracie Atherton-Yu and her husband Joe (23 years her junior) brace themselves for their twins to graduate from high school.

Variety has a first look at the anticipated Cannes Film Festival competition premiere “May December,” led by Oscar-winning heavyweights Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman and directed by Todd Haynes.
The title, which is also for sale out of this year’s Marché du Film, represents a “Far From Heaven” reunion for Moore and Haynes and a significant breakout opportunity for “Riverdale” heartthrob Charles Melton.

Madeleine L’Engle once wrote: “Truth is what is true, and it’s not necessarily factual. Truth and fact are not the same thing.” It’s a quote I return to often while thinking about Netflix’s stellar limited series “Unbelievable” for a variety of reasons, but never so much as when mulling over how the series managed to take inspiration from real events to create something even greater than the sum of its parts. It takes something factual and makes it true.
For Susannah Grant, who served as co-creator, writer, and director on “Unbelievable,” the process of adapting “An Unbelievable Story of Rape,” originally published by ProPublica and The Marshall Project, was all about being more faithful to the truth than the facts. “You’re going for the authenticity of someone’s experience,” Grant said in a phone interview with IndieWire, “And you obviously can’t incorporate every life moment that added up to that,...

The casting branch of the academy is only six years old and doesn’t have an Oscar category of its own. However, the Casting Society of America has been handing out the Artios Awards for 34 years (“Artios” is from the ancient Greek meaning “perfectly fitted.”). This year’s awards took place on Thursday (Jan. 30) on both coasts. At the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, winners included three of the Oscar nominees for Best Picture: “Jojo Rabbit,” “Marriage Story”” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” (see full list of winners below).
In addition to the eight film categories listed below, the Atrios Awards honored Geena Davis with the Lynn Stalmaster Award for Career Achievement while Audra McDonald received the Marion Dougherty New York Apple Award, casting director Deborah Aquila was feted with the Hoyt Bowers Award and Andy Pryor was lauded with the Excellence in Casting Award.

Do you love to hate the familial chemistry in “Knives Out” or the equally toxic marital misery in “Marriage Story?” Are you awed by the pack of relative unknowns breaking your heart from week to week on “Pose?” Then make sure to thank your friendly, neighborhood casting director, responsible for staffing up all your favorite stories.
Indeed, it was time for the casting directors to shine on Thursday night, with not one, not two, but three ceremonies celebrating the best of the business for their work in casting projects including animation, film, television, and the stage. With a Los Angeles ceremony hosted by Ron Funches, a New York event hosted by Michelle Buteau, and a London soiree overseen by Jason Isaacs, the Casting Society of America went all out for the 35th Annual Artios Awards.

Todd Haynes relaxes into a couch in a suite at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons, having arrived at his final sit down at the end of a long press day for his new film, Wonderstruck, which tells the interlacing stories of two children across different time periods: In 1977, Ben (played by Pete's Dragon actor Oakes Fegley) goes on a quest through New York City to find the father he never knew, while in 1927, Rose (newcomer Millicent Simmonds), a young, deaf cinephile, likewise sets out into the city in search of silent movie star Lillian Mayhew (Julianne Moore). The movie marks the director's fourth collaboration with Moore, following 1995's Safe, 2002's Far From Heaven (which he was Oscar-nominated for Best Original Screenplay and she for Best Actress) and 2007's I'm Not There.

Talk about a power couple. Husband and wife duo Emily Blunt and John Krasinski will team up onscreen for the first time in the feature film, “A Quiet Place.” But the collaboration is not just one in front of the camera. In addition to starring, Krasinski will also write and direct the horror-suspense film. Though “The Office” alum has directed two films previously, “A Quiet Place,” from Paramount/Platinum Dunes, will mark his first directorial gig with a major studio. Details about the project’s plot are scant so far, however, we do know production is slated to begin this September in upstate New York. We also know that Blunt and Krasinski will play parents, while “Suburbicon” actor Noah Jupe has signed on for the role of their son. Laura Rosenthal and Maribeth Fox are splitting duties as casting directors. Krasinski will executive produce along with Allyson Seeger and Scott Beck & Bryan Woods.

Next time you’re awestruck by a movie’s all-star cast, there’s one person you should be thanking: the casting director. A casting director — or, sometimes, a few of them — are responsible for assigning talent to the various roles in a film, television show, or stage production.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences just made history by recognizing someone in this all-important role for the first time in its history when Lynn Stalmaster was given an honorary Oscar at this year’s Governors Awards ceremony — alongside other greats like film editor Anne V. Coates, documentarian Frederick Wiseman, and martial arts legend Jackie Chan. The 88-year-old, whose career nearly stretches back to 1950, is known for works like Fiddler on the Roof, Tootsie, and In the Heat of the Night — just to name a few.

The Casting Society of America has announced the nominees of its 31st annual Artios Awards. J.J. Abrams' "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is among the nominees in its Big Budget Drama category. And why not? The film cast the fantastic unknowns Daisy Ridley and John Boyega along with franchise veterans Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill. All to stellar effect mind you!
According to its site, "Artios" from the ancient Greek, meaning "perfectly fitted." So how fitting! Here's more info on the Artios Awards:
In October of 1985 the Casting Society of America presented the first-ever Artios Awards for Excellence in Casting at an awards luncheon. Held in the Crystal Room of the Beverly Hills Hotel, the event was attended by more than 500 industry leaders and seven Csa members were honored for their work in four different casting categories. On the morning of the press conference for Todd Haynes' Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, I met up with fellow First Time Fest juror Christine Vachon of Killer Films and Number 9 Films' Elizabeth Karlsen. Christine and Elizabeth executive produced the disturbing Mrs. Harris, starring Annette Bening and Ben Kingsley, directed by Phyllis Nagy, who is the screenwriter for Carol.
Cate Blanchett as Carol: "She [Cate] was attached to it before Todd and I came on board." Over eggs and coffee at Essex House, we discussed Mara's resemblance to Jean Seberg, Jean Simmons, Audrey Hepburn and the timing of David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, A Rage In Harlem Cincinnati connection, Patricia Highsmith's The Price Of Salt turning into Carol, Perry Como, production designer Judy Becker, casting with Laura Rosenthal, an upcoming...

Diminishing screen sizes and closure of a key venue led to 4% dip in numbers, festival director Clare Stewart tells ScreenDaily.
The BFI London Film Festival has recorded attendance of 157,000 across film screenings and events and an additional UK-wide audience of more than 10,000 for its 59th edition, which closed last night with Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs.
The festival, which ran Oct 7-18, could not match last year’s record-breaking attendance of 163,300, plus 12,000 UK-wide.
However, festival director Clare Stewart told ScreenDaily that a number of factors had led to this 4% drop in numbers, including the closure of a key venue and diminishing screen sizes.
“The challenge for us with attendance this year was losing Odeon West End, which is now being developed as a luxury hotel,” said Stewart, who has helped grow numbers at the Lff since taking charge of the festival in 2012.
“This venue generated 23% of our attendance in our record-breaking 2014 results. Whilst we have...

This year’s Lff screened a total 238 fiction and documentary features (down from 248 in 2014), including 16 world premieres, eight international premieres, 40 European premieres and 11 archive films including five restoration world premieres. The line-up also included 182 live action and animated shorts.
Year of the strong woman
Lff 2015 was branded “the year of the strong woman” and opened with Sarah Gavron’s period, political drama Suffragette, which saw feminist protesters storm the red carpet.

Because the Casting Society of America shifted the date of its Artios Awards, this year’s nominees include films released theatrically from July 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2014, paving the way for last year’s Best Picture winner to nuzzle its way into contention along with 2014 hopefuls like "Birdman," "Boyhood," and "Selma." With categories ranging from Big Budget Drama to Low Budget Comedy, nearly every film that one expects to make the cut made the cut. And then some. The Csa’s nominees put "Guardians of the Galaxy" side by side with "Wolf of Wall Street," "Whiplash" with "Inside Llewyn Davis," and Disney’s "Planes" with "Frozen." If you were dreaming of a re-evaluation of "We’re the Millers," your time is now. 2015’s bicoastal Artios Awards will be hosted by Patton Oswalt (Los Angeles) and Michael Urie (New York City). The evening will also honor two-time Academy Award®-nominee Richard Linklater ("Boyhood...

The Casting Society of America has super-sized its Artios Awards feature film nominations this year, honoring 42 different films and putting some of 2014’s top contenders in categories where they’ll compete against 2013’s awards movies.
For its 30th annual ceremony, the awards for casting directors have moved from their usual fall slot to a late-January date that placed them in the middle of awards season. To accommodate the new date, this year’s eligibility period spanned 18 months instead of a single year, encompassing films released in the second half of 2013 and all of 2014.

For Kill Your Darlings, first-time director John Krokidas finagled a spectacular Young Hollywood cast to echo the gathering of Allen Ginsberg and other young Beat poets at Columbia University before they became famous. Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, Ben Foster, Boardwalk Empire’s Jack Huston, and Elizabeth Olsen play the coterie of ambitious free thinkers whose mission to rewrite the rules of literature is dramatically impacted by a real-life murder in 1944.
For the lead role of Ginsberg, Krokidas turned to Radcliffe, who won over the young director by insisting on auditioning even though the Harry Potter star could probably have had...
