Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Rustin, Netflix’s biopic of civil rights icon Bayard Rustin. Colman Domingo stars in the film, which is directed by Tony winner George C. Wolfe and hit theaters and the streamer in November after its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.
The screenplay co-written by Julian Breece and Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black focuses on one of the main architects of the 1963 March on Washington, where more than 200,000 hear Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech on the National Mall. Rustin was a fulcrum in the civil rights movement, working alongside the likes of King, Adam Clayton Powell Jr and Ella Baker, though as an openly gay man in that era he often had to work behind the scenes. He challenged authority and never apologized for who he was or what he believed.

On the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington, Netflix released the trailer for “Rustin,” which explains how civil rights leader Bayard Rustin defied the odds to plan the historic event.
“On Aug. 28, Black, white, young, old, rich, working-class, poor will descend on Washington D.C.,” Rustin, portrayed by Emmy winner Colman Domingo, says early in the clip, which chronicles the lead-up to the monumental march.
As Rustin prophesied, on Aug. 28, 1963, more than 250,000 people gathered near the Lincoln Memorial and millions more watched on live television while Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. The march is remembered as one of the greatest peaceful protests in history, but Rustin’s story has gone largely untold.

For Black activists, marching toward freedom in the 1960s meant navigating roadblocks and visceral hatred in order to stand for what was right. In the official teaser trailer for Netflix’s Rustin, Colman Domingo embarks on this journey through the lens of March on Washington architect Bayard Rustin. For the civil rights activist and organizer, his identity as a Black, gay man was never something to be explained away or apologized for. In fact, it only fueled his power.

The first trailer for Rustin, Netflix’s upcoming film about the life and work of Bayard Rustin, the openly gay Black civil rights leader and architect of 1963’s March on Washington, promises to put an end to the history of erasure around the visionary’s legacy.
Released Monday, on the official 60th anniversary of the historic freedom march, the first look captures the passionate, profound and often tumultuous journey of one of the country’s most significant civil rights activists, socialists, pacifists, labor unionists and gay rights advocates. Directed by DGA award and five-time Tony winner George C. Wolfe, Domingo — in his first leading feature film role — embodies the radical voice and fixture of the 20th-century fight for equality and justice in American democracy.

Exclusive: Filmmaker George C. Wolfe was not interested in doing what he termed “icon crap” in his movie Rustin, about the multi-layered life of Bayard Rustin, regarded as one of the most influential organizers of the Civil Rights Movement and the architect of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, which took place 60 years ago this week.
“You have to have an extraordinary degree of irreverence and approach it like, ‘This is a human being.’ Because if you’re doing icon crap, it is very easy for you to fall into boring or reverential, and we have statues for that,” said Wolfe of his film that stars Colman Domingo as the man who often was at Dr. Martin Luther King’s side.
Many have opined that Rustin has been neglected by history.

Producers Daniel Sladek and Chris Taaffe have scored the films rights to two novels - Graham Salisbury's "Night of the Howling Dogs" and Corinne Joy Brown's "MacGregor's Lantern" reports Variety.
Based on a true story, 'Dogs' follows the struggle for survival by the members of Boy Scout Troop 77 on Hawaii's big island. The group was camping in the wilderness in 1972 when an earthquake and a resulting tsunami struck.
'Lantern' is a historical-fiction romance and drama epic set around Colorado-Wyoming in the late 1800's when European cattle barons vied for control of land.

Perhaps the biggest surprise with this morning's announcement of the 2010 Producers Guild Nominees is the inclusion of not just Avatar, but the fact both District 9 and Star Trek made their list of ten films vying for the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award.
Along with those three we also have the rest of the Oscar front-runner elite. I have included the complete list below. I'm not sure I would say the winner at the PGA Awards makes for a guaranteed Best Picture winner at the Oscars. Althought the last two Best Picture winners (Slumdog Millionaire and No Country for Old Men) also won the PGA, it's a mixed bag after that with 13 of the 20 Producers Guild winners going on to win the Oscar since 1990.
The complete list of nominees is below and the PGA will announce the winner January 24 in a ceremony at the Hollywood Palladium based on voting by its 4,200 members.

The Producers Guild of America has chosen ten films as nominees for its Best Picture award. The winner will be announced Jan. 24 at the Hollywood Palladium.
I'm proud to say that besides "A Serious Man," their choices of their 10 film nominees are similar to my Top 10 Best Films of 2009. :happy
The PGA opted to expand their nominees to 10 in response to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences 10 Best Picture nominees.
Oscar watchers take note -- the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award -- has matched the Oscar Best Picture in 13 of its 20 years. So the film that will win the PGA has a strong chance of winning the Oscars.

Being as how our hearts are about as soft as cashew brittle, it's not often that something comes along that warms us up enough to tease a gentle "Awwww..." from our lips.
But when actor Scott Bailey's publicist sent us an essay that he'd written about his experience playing the boyfriend of Bobby Griffith in the true-life tearjerker Prayers for Bobby, that's pretty much what happened.
I was originally going to excerpt the essay here for you to read, but I'm actually posting it in its entirety below, because it's kinda too precious for words.
Prayers For Bobby: A Once In A Lifetime Experience.
Yes, Prayers for Bobby will air on Lifetime starting Jan 24th but the title is more than just clever wordplay: it is my heartfelt truth! It feels like a miracle that such a timely and meaningful film has come to fruition and...

It’s an admittedly gripping story: a conservative Christian woman refuses to accept her gay teenage son, hounding him to “change” to the point where he commits suicide. But then, overcome by the realization of what she has done, the woman educates herself, renounces her previous anti-gay beliefs, and becomes a crusader for Glbt youth and gay rights.
Perhaps it’s not surprising that the real-life story of Mary Griffith of Walnut Creek, California, has now become Prayers for Bobby, a TV movie starring Sigourney Weaver airing on Lifetime later this month.
And yet, as extraordinary as the story is, it was anything but an easy sell.
“Making movies is hard enough,” says Daniel Sladek, one of the film’s executive producers. “But when you have a movie about teen suicide, a woman questioning her faith, and gay rights, that’s a hot potato.”
The finished film is not your typical TV movie.
