The Pittsburgh Steelers were noticeably absent from the field as the national anthem played on Sunday – except offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva, a veteran who served in the army.
While his teammates remained in the locker room, Villanueva stood alone just outside of the tunnel entrance to Soldier Field in Chicago with his hand over his heart.
Head coach Mike Tomlin told CBS Sports about the team’s plans before the game.
“We’re not participating in the anthem today, not to be disrespectful to the anthem – to remove ourselves from this circumstance,” he said. “People shouldn’t have to choose.

The famous Pirelli Calendar has gone through many iterations since it debuted in 1964. The calendar originally began as a means of setting the tire company apart from their competition with a project that enlisted the best artists, photographers, and models of the era. Pirelli really began to make waves, however, as their annual publication became synonymous with pinup girls and nude photo shoots, but in recent years it has made an abrupt shift towards a more feminist, inclusive 21-century vision of fashion. The brand has enlisted Annie Leibowitz to shoot the women that inspire her and Peter Lindbergh to photograph...

Forget Disney’s recent reiteration of the classic fairy tale and instead look back at where the tale’s magic began on film, with Jean Cocteau.
The self-titled Belle and her captor-turned-prince Beast have returned to cinema screens around the world. In Disney’s latest live-action reiteration of one of their much-loved animated fairytales, Bill Condon’s live-action Beauty and the Beast has reintroduced contemporary audiences to the pair. With their return has come explorations of Disney’s representations of gayness, the question of modern viewing habits, and record-breaking box office success (the film has broken the March record for best opening with a $175m domestic gross).
This multiplicity of films on the same tale has been seen before, with the reintroduction of Snow White in 2012 arriving in the form of three very different films. 2012 brought the strong and defiant rebel ‘Snow’ in Snow White and the Huntsman, while Mirror Mirror restyled the classic tale. Of course, it’s great to see original prints of classic horror movies on the big screen, but there’s a community aspect that’s unlike anything you’ll see at a regular movie theater and I’m always making new friends.
Unfortunately, drive-ins have had a real hump to get over the last few years with the push to digital projectors, making the low number of operational drive-ins even lower. Thankfully, there have been some great efforts to support these locations and it seems like there’s a real push to preserve and expand this experience for a new generation.

Channel 4 premiered the advert for its Crabbie's Grand National coverage on Friday night (March 21).
The 90-second trail, produced by 4Creative, shows riders battling through woods and clearing burning haystacks, recreating the world's first recorded steeplechase. Watch below:
The action moves through the centuries before ending with jockeys AP McCoy and Richard Johnson heading out to race in the present day.
Filmed over five days, the advert was shot in locations across the UK.
The first recorded steeplechase is reported to have taken place in 1752 as a result of a wager between Cornelius O'Callaghan and Edmund Blake.
James Walker, Channel 4 head of marketing, said: "The Grand National was a great success for us in 2013 and we want to build on The Original Extreme Sport strategy in 2014.
"Last year we focussed on the 'extreme' by showing a street race in Liverpool and this year we are bringing out the 'original'...

Shia Labeouf's latest thing is his art show #Iamsorry, which features him in a room with a paper bag over his head, sitting in complete silence across from strangers.
If it sounds familiar, it's because Marina Abramović did something very similar, minus the paper bag and other accoutrements, in her installation piece "The Artist Is Present." One might wonder if this is just Labeouf's latest act of ham-handed plagiarism, a prank on the people who show up for such an event, or an actual attempt to reconnect with the people who've sharpened their knives just for him -- after all, who else is going to go except for folks who either think this is yet another schmucky stunt and/or are going to cover it for the media? And can you really write about someone so cruelly when you've stared into his eyes -- just his eyes, since his...

Telegraph, Mail and Guardian among UK newspapers refusing to obey ban on reviewing Baz Luhrmann's film ahead of Cannes
It has long been a bugbear of despairing editors: the determination of film studios to maintain regional embargoes for critics' reviews in an internet age where geographical boundaries are increasingly irrelevant. Now the matter may finally have come to a head after a number of British newspapers blankly refused to obey a ban on reviewing Baz Luhrmann's much-hyped new adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby ahead of its European premiere at the Cannes film festival tomorrow night.
Studio Warner Bros was still continuing to apply the embargo of noon tomorrow (Wednesday 15 May) to all non-us outlets as late as yesterday, despite the Daily Mail having published a review as early as Tuesday last week. The Independent followed suit on Friday with a review from a Us-based critic,...

But if you're guessing Swinton got her one-of-a-kind look thanks to a little Photoshopping, think again! "Nicol Williamson, the British actor best known for his role as the wizard Merlin in the 1981 film Excalibur, has died of esophageal cancer," reports the AP. "Williamson had dozens of film credits to his name but won more plaudits for his stage acting. Playwright John Osborne once described him as 'the greatest actor since Marlon Brando.' He was nominated for a Tony Award in 1966 for his role in Osborne's Inadmissible Evidence and again in 1974 for Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. He also was nominated three times for acting honors at the British Academy Film Awards, Britain's equivalent of the Oscars."
"He made his professional stage debut at the Dundee Repertory Theatre in 1960, before appearing in Tony Richardson's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Royal Court Theatre," notes the BBC. An essay by Tim Walker at The Independent called “No more heroes: Why no one else can make films like Steven Spielberg” made me cry yesterday. For a lot of reasons. For how it reminded me how the movies of my childhood made me fall in love with movies. For suggesting that such movies may never come again. For how it prompted me to compare today’s movies with those yet again... and see today’s movies coming up short. A taste: Spielberg was a singular talent, whose personal successes altered the entire business. Summer was thought of as a fallow season for Hollywood until Jaws chewed up the 1975 box office, creating the blockbuster market that we live with today. Geoff Boucher is the man behind Hero Complex, the Los Angeles Times's renowned "fanboy" movie blog, which hosted this week's 30th anniversary screening of Raiders. "If you really love the big summer adventure movies,...

It's been a long wait, but Elfie Hopkins and the Gammons is finally shooting in Wales.
The independent horror feature film stars Jaime Winstone as a grungy wannabe detective who attempts to uncover the human flesh-eating truth about the close-knit Gammon family.
The film is directed and co-written by Ryan Andrews who told Shock Till You Drop
"After meeting Jaime I knew she could become the main focus [for] something really special and unique in British horror fantasy terms. Elfie is a finely tuned representation of my own childhood memories growing up in rural Wales. I often used to imagine myself as a vampire hunter let loose on a community of surreal country folk. Riyad and I have taken those already magnified experiences and transformed them further into a combination of British twee and American grunge – a weird mash-up of two worlds with a heightened reality comic-strip feel informed by everything...
