As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, prolific screenwriter Tracy Tormé has passed away at the age of 64. Tormé was a veteran of 1980s-era "Saturday Night Live" and wrote the TV movie "UFO Cover-Up?: Live!" in 1988, cementing his reputation among amateur ufologists everywhere. In the late '80s, Tormé was hand-picked by show creator Gene Roddenberry to contribute to the then-new "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Tormé became the show's executive story editor and creative consultant, a position he held for 24 of the show's early episodes. He is also the credited writer on 12 first-season episodes, including "Haven," "Skin of Evil," "The Arsenal of Freedom," and "The Big Goodbye."
That last episode, which aired on January 11, 1988, was notable in that it was the first holodeck-forward episode of the series. The holodeck was, of course, introduced in the show's pilot, "Encounter at Farpoint," which explained to audiences that the Enterprise-d was equipped with...

Tracy Tormé, the vision behind Sliders and an early writer on Star Trek: The Next Generation, has passed away at the age of 64 from complications from diabetes.
Tracy Tormé’s work and contributions within the sci-fi genre made him famous to fans. As per his sister (via The Hollywood Reporter), he “always interested in UFOs — the serious side of UFOs — and in the Air Force pilots who had seen them.” While he only wrote for two seasons on The Next Generation – also serving as story editor – his touch undoubtedly gave the series the thrust it needed to set the tone for the remainder of the series. The greatest success of his career, however, may be Sliders, which he co-created with Robert K. Weiss. Such a following it had developed, when Fox canceled it after three seasons, Sci Fi picked it up for its remaining two. In total, Sliders had 88 episodes...

Tormé died Thursday of complications from diabetes in Escondido, California, his sister and brother, actress Daisy Tormé (Superman & Lois) and recording artist James Tormé, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Tormé also was a writer on Saturday Night Live during its eighth season (1982-83); wrote and produced with Travis Walton the fantasy drama film Fire in the Sky (1993), starring D.B. Sweeney and Robert Patrick; and was a consultant on the acclaimed Robert Zemeckis sci-fi drama Contact (1997).

“No One Will Save You,” the tale of a young woman (Kaitlyn Dever) battling extraterrestrial foes, just premiered on Hulu. In many ways it’s the ultimate scary alien invasion movie, throwing in menacing extraterrestrial intruders, abductions, ominously hovering UFOs and even a creepy “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” motif with gooey creatures nestled in your throat. It’s very scary and very good – so good, in fact, that you’ll probably have a hankering for more creepy stories of alien visitation.
To that end, here are five more scary-as-hell alien movies to watch after you finish “No One Will Save You” – and where you can watch them right now.

Whenever you see a film that opens with the words “based on real events”, you can be sure of two things. One, you’re going to have a good time. Two, that this film will probably contain about as much factual material as I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter! contains butter.
But we don’t care!
We’re not just talking about biopics or historical films here, we’re talking about crime movies like Pain & Gain, Catch Me If You Can, romances like It Could Happen to You, and crime romances like I Love You Phillip Morris. And of course the horror genre absolutely loves a “Based On A True Story” title card and poster slogan. The Amityville Horror, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and all The Conjuring movies have one (making the last the first ever Based On A True Cinematic Universe).
So the question is,...

“How To Watch Birds,” episode five of How To with John Wilson’s final season, presents a familiar trajectory: eponymous documentarian follows through with stated premise before being diverted into a completely different context. Not more than seven minutes into Wilson’s episode about birding he’s interviewing UFO expert Travis Walton, whose alleged abduction story inspired Fire in the Sky (1993), and not long after that he voluntarily agrees to a lie detector test. “Have you ever lied to someone on your show?” asks the administrator. “No,” Wilson replies, following a pregnant pause. When informed he is lying, Wilson quietly mutters, “Fuck.” […]

The director of 1993’s enduring classic Fire in the Sky, Bloody Disgusting has learned that Robert Lieberman passed away at the age of 75 earlier this month after a battle with cancer.
Many horror fans consider Fire in the Sky to be the most terrifying alien abduction movie ever made, with one scene in particular being among the scariest in the genre’s history.
Released in theaters in 1993, Fire in the Sky was based on Travis Walton’s book The Walton Experience, which itself was based on Walton’s real-life tales of alien abduction.
In the film’s most harrowing scene, Walton (played by D.B. Sweeney) is experimented on by a group of aliens, first emerging from a slimy cocoon and then being subjected to various forms of extraterrestrial torture. It’s a sequence that once seen is never unseen, frequently popping up on lists of the scariest scenes in horror...

The tropes of an alien abduction — the UFO chasing the car, missing time, strange experiments, grey-skinned beings with large eyes — emerged primarily from two alleged experiences, the Betty and Barney Hill case in 1961, and Travis Walton’s in 1975. Beyond having an enormous influence on pop culture, these are the most famous so-called close encounters of the fourth kind.
They are also the most well-documented cases, according to UFO expert and former FBI special agent, Ben Hansen. And in two new discovery+ “Shock Docs,” Alien Abduction: Betty and Barney Hill and Alien Abduction: Travis Walton — debuting Feb. 18 on the streaming platform — Hansen walks audiences through the stories, and offers up new evidence that he believes corroborates the abductees’ claims. Exclusive: D.B. Sweeney is set for a heavily recurring role in Chuck Lorre’s CBS comedy B Positive, starring Annaleigh Ashford and Thomas Middleditch. The role reunites Sweeney with executive producer Lorre with whom he worked on Two And A Half Men.
Created by former Mom co-executive producer Marco Pennette inspired by personal experience, B Positive is about a therapist and newly divorced dad (Middleditch) who is faced with finding a kidney donor when he runs into a rough-around-the-edges woman from his past (Ashford) who volunteers her own. Together they form an unlikely bond and begin a journey that will change both of their lives.
Sweeney plays Bert, a cook that works at the Valley Hills assisted living facility. He can be a little dense, and his haphazard cooking leads to more than a few disappointing meals. But his new boss, Gina, continues to support him. She sees potential, and a lot of herself,...

Rlje Films has debuted the official trailer for an alien abduction, sci-fi mystery/thriller film titled Beyond The Sky, which is getting a release next month. The film has gone under a few other titles, including Encounter and False Memory Syndrome, but will be released as Beyond The Sky. Travis Walton, author of the memoir "Fire in the Sky" about his own alien abduction experience (which was turned into that horrifying 1993 film Fire in the Sky), served as a consultant and has a cameo in the film. We may remember Independence Day, The Matrix, The Phantom Menace. But what about these forgotten 90s sci-fi films? And are any worth seeing?

But what about the sci-fi films of the 1990s that failed to make even close to the same cultural and financial impact of those big hitters? These are the films this list is devoted to - the flops, the straight-to-video releases, the low-budget and critically-derided. We've picked 50 live-action films that fit these criteria, and dug them up to see whether they're still worth watching in the 21st century.

There's something more chilling about movies based on true events. Knowing that at least some version of what you're seeing on the screen actually happened in real life makes the movie more powerful. With the upcoming release of The Quiet Ones, we decided to reminisce about other movies based on horrific real life events.
The Quiet Ones is inspired by a true story of a university experiment done on a young girl that goes horribly, horribly wrong, so we focused on movies based on claims of supernatural true events.
There is a huge list of honorable mentions in this category. Shaun Ryder has said that he believes people have been abducted by UFOs.
The Happy Mondays frontman leads History's upcoming four-part series Shaun Ryder on UFOs, which starts on Sunday, November 10 at 8pm.
"The big thing that got me was meeting Travis Walton because I'd seen the movie based on Travis's life," said Ryder of making the programme.
"I believe Travis was abducted absolutely. But you see other people who have claimed that they've been abducted and it looks just like they are coming back from a day walking around the Trafford Centre, all jolly!
"Travis looked like he had post-traumatic stress or had just walked out of a Vietnam battlefield. He looked grey and it really affected him - you could see that from his interviews."
He added: "Governments are definitely hiding stuff. I mean I know they are. It's a fact. I think it's because they really think...

Are we alone in the universe? Pondering upon the vastness of the universe, we'd have to be incredibly self-centered to think we are the only life form in existence. And although we haven't seen proof of our intergalactic brethren, there have been plenty of films and TV shows about their clandestine (and more demonstrative) visits to Earth.
Now we have an entirely new horrific vision about one of those alien visits and the havoc they cause in Dark Skies. Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton star as the married couple whose life becomes derailed by mysterious happenings caused by a disturbing malevolent force…and it isn't a domestic disturbance by any means. This one is imported. Way imported.

Travis Walton disappeared for five days back in 1975. But what happened to him? "Paranormal Witness" recounted his story through interviews and reenactments. Walton said that through hypnosis, he was able to remember being taken on board an alien spaceship.
His abduction was witnessed by friends, who said the experience has haunted them to this day.
"I was afraid to look out the window. For a guy, 25 years old, being afraid you’re gonna see a spaceship," one of them, Ken Peterson, said emotionally. "Something that I haven’t gotten over. I wish I could."
Walton's abduction has been considered the most famous close encounter of all time, according to the New York Daily News. That said, though, in 2009 he appeared on the Fox game show "Moment of Truth, where a polygraph test said he was lying about what happened.
True or not, "Paranormal Witness" recounts terrifying tales every Wednesday at 10 p.

And now the antithesis to all those aliens who come in peace (as I pointed out here) – the invaders! Resistance is futile.
*Before your geek instincts start wondering where the xenomorphs are, keep in mind the following list is limited only to invaders of Earth.
10) Independence Day (1996)
Like 99% of Roland Emmerich/Dean Devlin films, ID4 (as it was called then) was a huge piece of shit, but as alien invasion films go, it cannot be overlooked. In terms of computer-generated effects, it was one of the most ambitious films to date. The trailer featured the freaking White House being blown up by a mothership! And Will Smith punches an alien in its face. “Welcome to Earth!” For box-office grosses, you can’t go wrong with testosterone like that. In terms of cinematic quality, though, Independence Day brought nothing to the table. Still, those of us who were about 12-years old...

Do aliens really hover in our skies, waiting to kidnap us for their own unfathomable ends? Ever since the case of Us couple Betty and Barney Hill became widely publicised in the mid-60s, hundreds of people have come forward with similar claims of extraterrestrial abduction, missing time, strange medical examinations and grey-skinned extraterrestrials
And while psychologists and ufologists disagree on the reality of such claims, the theme of alien abduction has been revisited several times by filmmakers since the late 70s. And as this list demonstrates, the results of such films can be decidedly mixed...

The Fourth Kind is an incredibly unsatisfying alien abduction movie. Unsatisfying because it has neither an alien or an abduction!
In Nome, Alaska, people under hypnosis remember being abducted by aliens who first notice they are being watched by an owl--that is not an owl. After seeing this boring flick, I would be amazed if owls want to watch it (even if they are not owls).
The title comes from categories of alien contact. The beginning of this film is strange. Actress Milla Jovovich walks out in an Alaskan forest to explain that she's going to be playing Dr. Abigail Tyler. Then for the next 10 minutes, we see purportedly real footage of the 'real' Tyler, sometimes in split screen with Milla Jovovich. While that sounds interesting, it really isn't--it's distracting and the people look nothing like who they are playing.
I'm all for verisimilitude, but this gets dull fast. Just as you're sick of it,...

The Fourth Kind trailer depicts a pseudo-documentary, told primarily through reenactments, narrated by supermodel / actress Milla Jovovich, about a series of alien abductions that take place in Nome, Alaska.
The first shot that brings us into this world is an adjusting camera eye. Then we see archival footage of a Dr. Abigail Tyler being interviewed with the stamp of Chapman University in the bottom corner, very conspicuous. Indeed, it’s unavoidable for us to see this seal of authenticity. The belittlement — it’s not Harvard University or Yale — only revs our instinct to believe this is in fact truth. (After all, who would fabricate a lesser academy as their source?)
Then, we see Milla herself. She walks up to camera through a foggy wood and speaks directly at us. "I am actress Milla Jovovich. I will be portraying Dr. Abigail Tyler. This film is a dramatization of events that occurred...
