Mark Damon, who starred in the Vincent Price horror classic House of Usher and spaghetti Westerns before revolutionizing the foreign sales and distribution film business and producing features including 9 1/2 Weeks, Monster and Lone Survivor, has died. He was 91.
Damon died Sunday of natural causes in Los Angeles, his daughter, Alexis Damon Ribaut, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Damon spent the first 20 years of his career as an actor, including about a dozen as a leading man in Italian action movies, before he transitioned to the business side.
He had early success as an executive producer with two movies written and directed by Wolfgang Petersen: the German-language World War II drama Das Boot (1981), which received six Oscar nominations, and The NeverEnding Story (1984), a big-budget fantasy film that featured a Damon-commissioned score by Giorgio Moroder for non-German audiences.

Cash Out opens with Mason Goddard and his crew stealing an outrageously expensive supercar as what he intends to be his last heist. Things don’t go as planned however as one of them, his girlfriend Amelia no less, is an undercover FBI agent. He barely escapes, and since he was already planning to retire, takes it one step further, he fakes his death and drops out of sight.
Three months later, his brother Shawn drops by trying to interest him in coming out of retirement for one more job. That doesn’t work, but when another member of the crew, Link calls he’s packing and on his way to the airport.
The next thing we know, Mason and Shawn are kidnapping a bank manager and the plan is in motion.

It’s been two decades since an epic fantasy film made history at the Oscars, winning every category in which it was nominated, and three women set new records. There weren’t many surprises at the 76th Academy Awards, but there were some memorable moments. Billy Crystal hosted for his eighth time on February 29, 2004. Read on for Gold Derby’s Oscars flashback 20 years ago to 2004.
It was finally Peter Jackson‘s time as the third installment of his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy earned him a trio of awards. Despite numerous nominations, the first two films failed to make big showings; however, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” not only claimed Best Picture, but won all 11 categories in which it was nominated. It tied with “Ben-Hur” (1960) and “Titanic” (1998) for most wins in one ceremony, and holds the record for biggest sweep. It was the 10th film...

If you were to design a global sales agent in a lab, they would come out looking a lot like Tamara Birkemoe.
Born in Italy to Chilean parents and raised between Sweden and Rome before moving to the U.S. for film school, the multilingual exec has been a force on the indie film scene since her first job, straight out of UCLA, for Mark Damon’s Mdp Worldwide. For the next 16 years, Birkemoe put in time at Mdp (later Media 8 Entertainment) and then at Foresight Unlimited, the production and sales group Damon set up in 2005. The slate she oversaw ranged from studio-released big-budget action fare, such as Peter Berg’s Lone Survivor and Baltasar Kormákur’s 2 Guns, both Universal Pictures films, which grossed $155 million and $132 million worldwide, respectively; to Kevin Costner starrer The Upside of Anger, a New Line release that earned $28 million worldwide; and Patty Jenkins’ low-budget true-crime drama Monster,...

Actor Charlize Theron floated the idea of starring in the Oscar-winning Monster to quite a few people before actually doing the movie. Even her Italian Job co-stars caught wind of her aspirations to do the incredibly dark film. However, her castmates wondered how serious she was about actually doing the movie.

Theron sought feedback from quite a few people when she was gearing up to do Monster. The 2003 feature was a massive departure from Theron’s usual flicks, as it saw her portray real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos. In an interview with Advocate, Theron remembered shopping the script around to see if others would’ve liked it as much as she did. Some couldn’t wait to see her in the movie. Others, however, were left confused.
“My mom read the script and she really loved it.

Actor Charlize Theron famously won an Oscar for her starring role in the feature Monster. But the dramatic transformation she did for the movie almost interfered with its release.
Charlize Theron once shared why some were concerned about ‘Monster’ Charlize Theron | Ethan Miller/WireImage
Theron was heavily praised for her role as real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. But leading up to the movie, few thought it would’ve gotten the positive buzz it did. The film’s director Patty Jenkins once told IGN that the feature was well on its way to being released on DVD. Theron’s involvement might’ve helped Monster secure a theatrical release.
“It’s banking on a straight to video release. Particularly because this was not Ted Bundy, this was living people right now who still were dealing with it. Aileen was alive at the time and there were people’s families. So for me,...

Michelle Yeoh won Best Actress last year for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” a dazzling fictional tale of a woman trying to save the multiverse. However, when we think of typical Best Actress winners, we do think of performers portraying real-life people. Sally Field in “Norma Rae” comes to mind, so, too, do Julia Roberts in “Erin Brockovich,” Sandra Bullock in “The Blind Side,” and Meryl Streep in “The Iron Lady.”
But is this an old-fashioned way of thinking? Or is it still a relevant metric with which to measure to potential Best Actress winners. Lily Gladstone portrays a real person in “Killers of the Flower Moon” but Emma Stone is the Oscar favorite for “Poor Things,” in which she plays a fictional character. So, let’s take a look a closer look at this category and what sort of roles Best Actress winners typically win for. Below is a...

As a founding member of The Rolling Stones, Brian Jones was fundamental in developing the sound of one of the greatest bands in rock history through less than a decade of their run. In 1969, Jones was found in his swimming pool — the victim of “death by misadventure” — becoming one of the first modern members of the infamous 27 Club. Now, as the Stones surpass their 60th anniversary, a documentary titled The Stones and Brian Jones is looking to give Brian Jones his proper due.
Directed by Nick Broomfield, who documented everyone from Tupac and Biggie to Sarah Palin and Aileen Wuornos, The Stones and Brian Jones looks to be just the sort of strong picture and analysis that we’ve come to expect from the director.

Many actors have had to completely transform how they look for a role, and Charlize Theron is no different. While some have followed extreme diets and vigorous workouts to lose weight, others have had to significantly increase the number of calories eaten to gain weight to play a character. On more than one occasion, Theron packed on the pounds, and now she says that she is “never ever” going to gain weight for a role – here’s why.

The stunning South African-American actress is no stranger to significant change for a movie role. It was in 2003 that Theron gained 30 pounds to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the movie Monster, and according to the website Splicedwire, she felt good about getting into character. Theron said in an interview “It wasn’t about getting fat. Aileen wasn’t fat.

Charlize Theron returned to the Oscar race in 2020 with a Best Actress nomination for “Bombshell.” The Academy Award winner earned raves for her eerie embodiment of former Fox News host Megyn Kelly, but where does the role fall into the rest of her filmography? Tour through our photo gallery of Theron’s 15 greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Success came pretty quickly for the South African born actress. After one uncredited role in a horror film, Theron burst onto movie screens in the film “2 Days in the Valley.” That film launched her into a series of roles usually as the wife or girlfriend and ones that capitalized on her stunning beauty. That all changed in 2003 when she took on the role of Aileen Wuornos, a Florida prostitute who became a serial killer and was put to death for her crimes. Bad guys tend to have a good time at the Oscars. From Christoph Waltz‘s 2010 “Inglourious Basterds” win for Best Supporting Actor to Anthony Hopkins‘ iconic 1992 Best Actor win for “The Silence of the Lambs,” you can always count on Oscar voters to take notice of a villain.
While those two examples are fictional, some actors have also had Oscar luck by playing real-life killers. For example, Charlize Theron won for playing Aileen Wuornos. Wuornos murdered seven men between 1989 and 1990 while she was a prostitute in Florida. She shot and robbed the seven men, who Wuornos claimed were clients who had either raped or attempted to rape, claiming self-defense. However, she was sentenced to death and executed in 2002 for six of the murders. Theron took home the Best Actress Oscar in 2004 for her transformative performance as the killer in “Monster.”

David Tennant took on one of his darkest roles to date when he played Dennis Nilsen – the notorious “Muswell Hill Murderer” who killed at least 12 young boys and men in North London from 1978 to 1983 – in ITV’s Des.
Tennant was the latest in a long line of actors to dramatise the lives of some of the world’s most prolific murderers – and it’s easy to see why such a part would be appealing. Playing a serial killer allows an actor to show their range and move away from being typecast. For those who’ve gone before them, such roles have been known to make a career, winning Oscars, Golden Globes and Baftas for those who take them on.

True story: All four acting Oscars went to performers who played fictional characters, marking the first time in six years that’s happened. This was helped by “Everything Everywhere All at Once” producing three winners: Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan and Best Supporting Actress for Jamie Lee Curtis. And another A24 film, “The Whale” won Best Actor for Brendan Fraser.
The last quartet of Oscar winners who played fake people were Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”), Emma Stone (“La La Land”), Mahershala Ali (“Moonlight”) and Viola Davis (“Fences”). Prior to that, you have to go back to the class of 1997, which featured “As Good as It Gets” leads Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt triumphing alongside Kim Basinger (“L.A. Confidential”) and Robin Williams (“Good Will Hunting”).

Since the enormous popularity surrounding Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe has never waned in the seven decades since they both rocketed to superstardom, it’s no wonder that Austin Butler and Ana de Armas sailed to Oscar nominations for portraying them in the 2022 films “Elvis” and “Blonde.” What is odd, however, is that the respective Best Actor and Best Actress hopefuls are the only ones nominated in any of this year’s acting categories for playing real people. While this 90 percent fictional character rate is far from unprecedented, it does stand in stark contrast to the preceding decade’s average of 59 percent and thus raises questions as to why academy voters chose to veer in the opposite direction.

It's been fascinating to see how Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron have become legitimate action stars since the two actors starred opposite each other in the demonic thriller "The Devil's Advocate." Reeves picked up the mantle first with "The Matrix" franchise which helped redefine U.S. action films. At 57 years old, Reeves has done the majority of his own stunts through four entries of the "John Wick" series, and if the latest "John Wick 4" trailer is any indication, the actor shows no signs of slowing down.
With powerhouse performances in "Mad Max: Fury Road," "Atomic Blonde," and "The Old Guard," Theron has carved out an onscreen action presence of her own as well. During production on "Atomic Blonde," Theron was training in the same airport hanger that Reeves occupied as he began gearing up for "John Wick: Chapter 2." Although Marilyn Monroe never got the chance to achieve Screen Actors Guild Awards recognition, her legacy has been honored by the organization in the form of multiple Best Actress notices for women who have embodied her on the big screen. 11 years after Michelle Williams was nominated for playing Monroe in “My Week with Marilyn,” Ana de Armas has earned a spot in the current lead female lineup for her take on the classic movie star in “Blonde.” Since SAG voters have feted several portrayals of iconic actors before, she stands a good chance of going all the way.

It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.
February sees the arrival of three notable true crime series on Hulu. Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.

The tragic story and eventual downfall of Aileen Wuornos was told in shattering detail in "Monster," earning Charlize Theron the Academy Award for Best Actress for her stripped down portrayal of America's first known female serial killer. During a brutal spree of murders over the course of one year in 1989, Wournos turned the tables on her would-be attackers, killing seven men who had propositioned her for sex. Wuornos had gone through an abusive childhood and turned to sex work early on in her deeply-troubled life. Of course, these men didn't necessarily deserve their fate, but through her streak of killings, Wournos upended the classic serial killer structure where men usually turned unsuspecting women into their victims.

Eddie Redmayne won his first Oscar for playing the paralyzed genius Stephen Hawking in the warmly received biopic “The Theory of Everything.” In telling the story of how the Oxford-educated Hawking overcame his physical limitations brought on by Als — or Lou Gehrig’s disease — to have a brilliant career as a physicist and author (“A Brief History of Time” was a best seller), and achieve personal satisfaction with two wives and two children, Redmayne won the hearts of academy voters and claimed the Best Actor prize in 2015.
Seven years later, Redmayne is trying for a second gold statuette in another real-life role but this one is sinister and twisted. The British actor plays Charles Cullen, a nurse who is serving 18 consecutive life sentences for the murders of various patients in his care in the Netflix film “The Good Nurse.” The “good” in the title refers to Amy Loughren, the...

Aileen Wuornos was a monster. She was such a monster, in fact, that the telling of her life story was aptly named “Monster,” and it won actress Charlize Theron an Oscar for her portrayal of this heinous human being. In case you are unfamiliar with the serial killer, Aileen Wuornos is documented as the first female serial killer in the United States. In the span of two years between 1989 and 1990, she worked as a prostitute up and down Florida highways and interstates. During that time, she killed at least seven of her ‘clients’, later claiming they attempted to

For any actor, playing a villain or just a plain bad person can be a true joy, because it lets them flex their imagination and acting muscles to play someone (hopefully) unlike themselves. That has also led many of those performances to winning Oscars. Even so, if you ask many actors (especially Christoph Waltz) about “playing a villain,” they’ll probably tell you that they couldn’t look at their character in that way, since they needed to create a believable motivation for their character to do all the awful things they do. And yet, so many actors have won Academy Awards for playing generally bad people, as you can see in the gallery above (or click here for direct access). Read on to see all of the Oscar-winning villains from the past 30 years.

Charlize Theron has reflected on a “belittling” experience with a director who apparently wanted her to dress more “f***able”.
The Mad Max: Fury Road star opened up about “having absolutely no control” over her choice of clothes in a new interview.
“Having absolutely no control over what you’re wearing is a big one that really f***ing annoyed me for years,” she told Harper’s Bazaar.
“Having some guy make you have a fitting almost in front of them – stuff like that, it’s really belittling.”
Theron, 47, continued: “When I started, there was no conversation around it. It was like, ‘This is what you’re wearing.’”
The actor went on to address a specific experience she had with an unnamed male director.
“I remember one movie in particular, this male director who just kept bringing me in, fitting after fitting after fitting after… and it was just so...

Charlize Theron had to slay a bad idea for “Monster.”
Theron won an Oscar for her portrayal of Florida sex worker turned serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Patty Jenkins’ 2003 feature debut, but the film’s financiers apparently had a very different movie in mind instead of Theron’s gritty, no holds-barred approach to the role.
Theron told Harper’s Bazaar that some “Monster” financiers wanted “a hot lesbian movie with me and Christina Ricci,” far from what the film ended up being. Ricci played Wuornos’ semi-fictionalized lover, Selby Wall.
Theron founded her production company Denver & Delilah in part to protect director Jenkins’ vision and also have control over her makeup and wardrobe. Theron’s drastic transformation into murderer Wuornos earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress, with Theron going on to produce critically acclaimed “Bombshell” and “Mindhunter” among other projects.

Charlize Theron’s career speaks for itself. She’s the actress unafraid to do what it takes to bring a role to life. She’s been a bombshell. She’s been a monster. She put herself into hair and makeup to become a living, breathing monster when she became serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the true story “Monster.” From 1989 to 1900, Aileen Wuornos prostituted herself up and down the Florida interstates and highways for a year. She killed seven of the men she picked up and left their bodies. She was arrested, tried, convicted, and put to death on October 9, 2002. Theron

This month, David Tennant will take on one of his darkest roles to date. In ITV’s Des, he plays Dennis Nilsen, the notorious “Muswell Hill Murderer” who killed at least 12 young boys and men in North London from 1978 to 1983.
Tennant is the latest in a long line of actors to dramatise the lives of some of the world’s most prolific murderers and it’s easy to see why such a part would be appealing. Playing a serial killer allows an actor to show their range and move away from being typecast. For those who’ve gone before them, such roles have been known to make a career, winning Oscars, Golden Globes and Baftas for those who take them on.
However, portraying serial killers obviously comes with its own set of challenges. These are people audiences know well, so do they mimic them word for word or do their own interpretation,...

Among this year’s Critics Choice Awards TV acting nominees are “the lifers,” an assortment of seasoned performers with long, successful Hollywood careers — many spanning from the ’80s and early ’90s, but also a few as far back as the ’60s — who have once again delivered performances on par with their finest work. And as several actors tell Variety, they’ve each followed distinctive paths, navigating industry changes and career highs and lows, to keep in the game for the long haul.
“In a way, my acting career has been headed toward this,” says Steve Martin, nominated for his performance as former TV star-turned-amateur detective and podcaster Charles-Haden Savage in “Only Murders in the Building,” which he also co-created.

It was 19 years ago that Nick Broomfield, that spiky and compelling one-man band of documentary filmmakers, released “Biggie & Tupac” (2002), his chilling, no-frills, down-the-mean-streets-of-Compton investigative look into the murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls.
The movie arrived at a moment when Broomfield had begun to style himself as a kind of high-end tabloid detective, plumbing the mysteries behind such sensational stories as the rise of Heidi Fleiss (“Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam”), the suicide of Kurt Cobain (“Kurt & Courtney”), and the life and death of the serial killer Aileen Wuornos (Broomfield made not one but two films about her). “Biggie & Tupac” didn’t present definitive evidence of anything, but it offered what was at the time a groundbreaking portrait of life at Death Row Records, the underworld music empire presided over by the gangsta entrepreneur Suge Knight. It was a movie that dove into key questions and pushed them further and further,...

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a character affect me the way that Maladie has,” explains Amy Manson. The actress is responsible for bringing the unhinged villain of HBO’s “The Nevers” to life. But as Manson explains, there is a traumatic backstory to this woman who was previously known as Sarah, which makes her much more complex and relatable than your average “big bad” on TV. “I respect her in a way,” admits Manson, “because she’s got so much resilience.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Manson’s first step was to “find her frequency and her energy.” The actress sports an almost animalistic physicality and wild voice. It carries an air of unpredictability. “Aileen Wuornos was a big influence on me,” says Manson. She was particularly struck by that real life serial killer’s final speech before her execution. It’s hard to say how many people really knew about Aileen Wuornos before the movie Monster came out in 2003, so it’s even more likely that people have no idea what her life was like before she went on a killing spree that eventually ended with her execution. There’s usually a huge argument that emerges when it comes to killers that are executed, as some people think that they deserve to be rehabilitated while others state that they had their chance. In Aileen’s case though she was adamant that letting her live would have been a serious mistake since she
