Exclusive: Moonlight’s André Holland is the latest A-list figure to turn to the world of scripted podcasting.
Holland, who starred as Kevin in the Oscar-winning film, will feature in mordant comedy The Ms Phoenix Rising alongside Anthony Arkin (Succession), Susan Blommaert (The Blacklist), Estelle Parsons (The Conners) and Jeremy O. Harris (Slave Play).
Created by Trish Harnetiaux, the playwright behind Tin Cat Shoes and How to Get into Buildings, the six-part series comes from Playwrights Horizons Soundstage.
The show follows cruise ship The Ms Phoenix Rising, which sets sail in six weeks, marking the relaunch of the cruise ship industry after a prolonged shutdown. Urgent, budget-driven planning makes for a tense front office at Dane Cruising while they race to secure their place in history with fast marketing ideas and a reckless social campaign. Whose idea was it again to hype the “Christopher Columbus Route” through the Bahamas? Whatever.

When Playwrights Horizons’ casting director Alaine Alldaffer began the casting process for Taylor Mac’s upcoming play “Hir,” she expected to do something similar to what she’s been doing for years. “Originally I was thinking, I’ll throw in a few wild cards here and there and see what happens,” she says. But Mac was adamant that the actor playing the trans character in his play be an actual trans performer. “Hir” is about Isaac’s return home from the wars to care for his sick father as his mother—thrilled by her newfound freedom—seeks to destroy the patriarchy with the help of Isaac’s transgender brother, Max. Alldaffer, associate casting director Lisa Donadio, and casting resident Bailey Jordan Koch worked over the wording of the casting breakdown to carefully avoid gendered language. “Bailey wrote the first draft and then we went over it and tweaked things and put things back,...

Park, No RecreationThe logistics of working at smaller theatersActors who perform in L.A.-area theaters under the Actors' Equity Association 99-Seat Plan aren't going to get rich doing so. Yet, as they practice their craft, it's a happy occasion when there are certain comforts or amenities available along the way.But finding safe and convenient parking can be a challenge, particularly in areas like the North Hollywood theater district, where boulevard meters require payment up until 8 p.m. and side-street parking is scarce. Meters requiring money at night are now prevalent in other areas too, including many Hollywood neighborhoods. Some companies, such as Hollywood's Actors Co-op, the Sierra Madre Playhouse, and Pasadena's Theatre @ Boston Court provide free parking for audiences, actors, and other theater workers at or near the building. Macha Theatre in West Hollywood has limited free parking. Other situations vary widely. Yet, where there's a will, there's always a way.

Pamela Guest on Julia RobertsIn 1985 or '86, I was hired to cast "Blood Red," an independent film starring Eric Roberts and directed by Peter Masterson, thanks to my mentor and friend Ellen Chenoweth. I had to go to New York to cast, and because Pete had connections at the Actors Studio, we held our auditions there. In Eric's contract was a clause that we had to either cast or audition his younger sister for a part in the film—I can't remember which. She'd been in New York a short time, and Eric wanted to help her get a start. The producer asked me to meet her, read her, and decide whether including her in the cast would ruin the movie. I spoke to her manager, Bob McGowan, about setting up a time, and he convinced me to just meet her that night. I agreed to a quick meet-and-greet at...
