It was late 2015, and director Ryan Coogler was feeling the call of Africa.
Coogler, then 29, was just finishing up his second film, the soon-to-be-a-hit Rocky reboot Creed. He was starting to think about what came next. "I was grappling with something I've kind of been scraping at my whole life," Coogler recalls, "which is my cultural identity, and what it means to be African. I was reading Ta-Nehisi Coates's work, getting ready to dive into that for personal reasons. And I'd been wanting to visit Africa," he says. "I had never been,...

Ever since Chadwick Boseman first bared his claws in Captain America: Civil War, we’ve been dying to see and learn more about T’Challa (not to mention the Dora Milaje). The first Black Panther trailer was a good start, as it featured Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong‘o in bodyguard mode, and the poster (pictured above) that showed T‘Challa on the throne was properly chill inducing. But since the bad guy is usually the weakest part of a Marvel film, we’ve been eager to see more of Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger, who will go toe to toe with Black Panther. As part of its San Diego Comic-Con coverage, Entertainment Weekly has released dozens of new set photos, which show Killmonger and T’Challa in battle, the Dora Milaje in ceremonial attire, and Martin Freeman’s Everett Ross in a cloak.

John Ridley is a filmmaker in demand. After nabbing an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay three years ago with 12 Years a Slave, the writer-director has been involved in a raft of wildly diverse projects, from the politically charged miniseries Guerrilla to American Crime, which is now in the midst of its third season on ABC.
And now, just as his Los Angeles riots documentary Let it Fall prepares to release via ABC and select theaters, John Ridley has closed a deal to write and direct his next project: time-travel pic Needle in a Timestack. An adaptation of Robert Silverberg’s riveting short story, the plot orbits around “a devoted husband who will stop at nothing to save his marriage when it is destroyed by a time traveling rival.” Cue the paradoxes and mind-bending timelines, though there’s currently no mention of casting at this time.

In 2013, Master of Horror James Wan terrified audiences with The Conjuring, a story based upon real-life husband and wife duo Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), who handle paranormal cases for those struggling against forces of evil and are unable to contend with said forces on their own. Despite being unfairly saddled with an unjustified R rating, The Conjuring still went on to become a critical and box office success, and spawned its own spin-off film as well.
This summer, the highly anticipated The Conjuring 2 arrives in theaters on June 10th. The sequel has reunited Wan once again with Wilson and Farmiga, whose characters are now dealing with an entity known as “The Enfield Poltergeist”, which terrorized a family of five in London in the late 1970s. And while fans can expect more scares and chills courtesy of Wan and his imagination, what was very evident...

The first official still from James Wan's The Conjuring 2 has been revealed by Entertainment Weekly, featuring one of the victims of the Enfield poltergeist: young Janet Hodgson (Madison Wolfe).
The new image from EW teases the frights to come in the sequel to 2013's The Conjuring. Although an official synopsis has yet to be released, it's believed that The Conjuring 2 will focus on a poltergeist that haunted a council house in the north London suburb of Enfield in the late ’70s. The home was rented by Peggy Hodgson, a single mother raising four children at the time.
Moving furniture, floating kids, and a ghost's creepy communication all supposedly took place within the home's walls, prompting paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren to pay the Hodgson family a visit.
In addition to Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprising their respective roles as Ed and Lorraine, The Conjuring 2 will also star Frances O’Connor,...

Directors Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy, two of the five partners from the Canadian film production company Astron-6, have reunited from their 2011 effort Father’s Day (a feature co-directed by all five members of their collective) for The Editor. Another reconstitution of vintage genre cinema, this time around they satirize the more ridiculous elements of the once popular giallo movement of film, those Italian thrillers often dubbed in English which gave rise to horror auteurs like Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, Sergio Martino, Emilio Miraglia, Mario Bava, and a host of others.
Incredibly silly but with enough moments of bloody gore to appeal to audiences who might have no idea exactly what Brooks and Kennedy are aping, the film is filled with charmingly deliberate jabs at unintentionally ridiculous flourishes from a bygone era. While its own narrative is so over-the-top it’s almost not even worth recounting, the film is fun,...

Chicago – Of the various genres of films, the psychological thriller is one of my holy grails. A story that highlights the psychology of its characters and their wobbly emotional states, few modern filmmakers dare to compete with the masterminds – Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch and more recently David Fincher and Darren Aronofsky – or fail when trying to.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut,” Lynch’s “Blue Velvet” and Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” – along with films like “The Silence of the Lambs,” “Se7en,” “Jacob’s Ladder,” “Pi,” “The Shining,” “Memento,” “The Sixth Sense,” “Misery” and “The Usual Suspects” – do the genre true justice. Fast forward to today, though, when we ask ourselves: Who is Joel Edgerton?
He’s an Australian actor – yes, an actor and not a writer or director (until now) – who you may or may not know. He’s on the poster for 2011’s “Warrior” with Tom Hardy and...

This year’s Blood List has named the 13 best genre scripts around town, and in its sixth year the annual screenplay contest is expanding its scope to include hot books, TV pilots, and young scribes ripe for signing. Taking top honors in 2014 is sci-fi thriller Bird Box from The Thing and Final Destination 5 scribe Eric Heisserer, an apocalyptic tale of a woman trying to lead her children to safety – all three blindfolded – after monsters descend on earth that turn people insane on sight. Universal set Heisserer to adapt the manuscript from Josh Malerman in 2013 for Mama helmer Andy Muschietti. Previous Blood List alumni include Black Swan, Stoker, Warm Bodies, and the upcoming Blumhouse thriller The Boy Next Door.
Like the Black List naming the top unproduced screenplays circulating around Hollywood, the genre-focused Blood List taps exec votes to determine each year’s best unmade horror, sci-fi, and thriller scripts.

Some quick news has come in this pre-Comic-Con weekend announcing a preemptive deal with progress-to-production elements by Russell Ackerman and John Schoenfelder's new company, Addictive Pictures. According to The Wrap they've optioned Matthew Kennedy's feature spec A Man Called Death.
Ackerman and Schoenfelder are former executives who previously worked with Guillermo del Toro and Scott Rudin, respectively. They have a first-look deal with Bloom, which is led by billionaire film financier Ken Kao.
The script features a Misery-esque setup that evolves into a Usual Suspects-type non-linear storyline. Kennedy will produce with his manager, Brooklyn Weaver, who brings his own experience and relationships to the table. Energy Entertainment's creative executive David Binns will co-produce.
Look for more on this one soon... if it's miserable enough for us to follow up on, that is!

Kevin Hart is playing best man Cedric in this weekend’s comedy Think Like A Man Too.
The comedian takes on the role of best man again opposite Josh Gad in this first teaser to The Wedding Ringer.
In The Wedding Ringer, Jimmy (Hart) provides best man services for socially challenged guys, who – for whatever reason – have no one close enough to agree to stand by them on the day of their wedding.
Doug (Gad) a groom-to-be, has found himself in just such a situation, but, to make matters worse, he fabricates the names of not only a best man but nine groomsmen as well. When all else fails, Doug seeks out Jimmy’s services to carry out a charade designed to make Doug look his best, but threatens to destroy everything if it fails.

Big Red is headed to the big screen.
The girl with the flaming curls (and not-so-flattering nickname) from Eleanor & Park and her soft-spoken, comic-book-loving crush will soon be getting the cinematic treatment, with DreamWorks Studios picking up film rights to Rainbow Rowell’s bestselling novel.
“Every girl who has read it says, ‘That was me in high school, or that was me in 7th grade,’” Holly Bario, DreamWorks president of production, tells EW. “It reminded all of us of our own sort of awkwardness, or family dysfunction.”
The studio was drawn to the teenage love story for the same reason as its legions of fans.

This Valentine’s Day the remake of the classic romantic comedy, About Last Night descends on theaters. The film, from director Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine), is more of a reimagining of the 1986 and actually has more in common with the David Mamet play Sexual Perversity in Chicago on which both films are based. The new contemporary version two couples as they journey from the bar to the bedroom as they try to carve out their own unique space in the world of dating.
The cast is headed by Michael Ealy and Joy Bryant, who play Danny and Debbie, a couple brought together on a blind double date with their best friends, Bernie (Kevin Hart) and Joan (Regina Hall), who are on their all-important post-coital second date. The film then follows all four as they navigate through the rocky terrain of the contemporary world of dating and through the...

There’s the one night stand, and there’s the long-term relationship.
Both have their place in the modern world of dating, but can the former become the latter, the heat of the moment transforming into the ever-burning fire?
It’s a perennial question, one that introduces a host of others: does it matter who says “I love you” first? How long should a couple wait before moving in together? When should best friends get involved, and should it be with positive encouragement or by playing devil’s advocate? (And does it matter if the friends’ romantic lives carry their own problems?)
In the insightful, hilarious romantic comedy About Last Night– arriving just in time to become the latest Valentine’s Day movie classic — four Los Angeles singles get a thorough workout in the ups and downs of today’s dating world. On yet another night of playing wingman to...

A haunted family struggles to uncover a terrifying secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world in Insidious: Chapter 2, the latest nerve-twisting horror thriller from director James Wan (The Conjuring) and screenwriter Leigh Whannell (Saw, Insidious).
FilmDistrict has come out with some frightening new images from the upcoming film.
Insidious centers on the troubles of the Lamberts, a suburban family who leave their haunted house for a new home, only to learn it’s not their house that is haunted – it’s their eldest son. Insidious: Chapter 2 rejoins the family as they try to put their recent troubles behind them, but discover that the spirits that have tormented them are far from finished.
Working individually and collectively, director James Wan, screenwriter Leigh Whannell and producer Jason Blum have been responsible for some of the most influential, commercially successful and flat-out terrifying horror thrillers of the past decade.

Wallace Beery movies: TCM offers a glimpse into Beery’s extensive filmography (photo: Marie Dressler and Wallace Beery in ‘Min and Bill’) According to the IMDb, the Wallace Beery Filmography features nearly 240 movie titles, including shorts and features, spanning more than three decades, from 1913 to 1949 — the year of his death at age 64. You’ll be able to catch about a dozen of these Wallace Beery movies on Saturday, August 17, 2013, as Turner Classic Movies continues with its "Summer Under the Stars" series. (See “TCM movie schedule: Wallace Beery from Pancho Villa to Long John Silver.”) Wallace Beery, much like fellow veteran Marie Dressler, with whom he co-starred in Min and Bill and its sequel, Tugboat Annie, was a Hollywood anomaly. At age 45, the ugly, coarse-looking actor became a top box-office draw in the United States after languishing in supporting roles, usually playing villains, throughout most of the silent era. Beery and Dressler,...

I do not like Troma films. By most people's accounts this makes me a very bad horror fan. It's not my fault if I don't like watching movies that make me feel like I smell like a butt hole okay? Also, I just don't understand why anyone would want to smell like a butt hole Or why anyone would want to sit through an hour and a half of a movie that makes you feel like both vomiting and dying.
Before everyone starts getting all angry and posting mean comments on this review, I would like to remind you that I unlike say--Hitler---am capable of trying to understand someones point of view even if I do not agree with it myself. That is to say, I will still give Father's Day the honor of getting a fair review.

Since I love unapologetically sleazy cinema, I’ve been following Astron-6′s upcoming gorefest “Father’s Day” very closely. Thanks to the fine, upstanding individuals working tirelessly over at Troma, the film is getting a limited theatrical run beginning, well, two days ago (January 18th). Whoops! I’m a little behind. Anyway, to help promote this potentially offensive motion picture, the promotional team has unleashed the colorful new poster you see below. I believe that a synopsis is in order: A long, long time ago in a town north of Tromaville, there was a bad, bad man who raped and killed dads. Nobody could stop the fat monster until a mysterious stranger took a stand. Some say he was avenging his own father. Some say he was just crazy. The stranger could not have known the Hell that was to follow. “Father’s Day”, which stars Adam Brooks, Mackenzie Murdock,...

Joan Blondell, Dick Powell, Dames Joan Blondell has always been a favorite of mine, much like fellow wisecracking 1930s Warner Bros. players Aline MacMahon and Glenda Farrell. The fact that Blondell never became a top star says more about audiences — who preferred, say, Shirley Temple and Mickey Rooney — than about Blondell's screen presence and acting abilities. As part of its "Summer Under the Stars" film series, Turner Classic Movies is currently showing no less than 16 Joan Blondell movies today, including the TCM premiere of the 1968 crime drama Kona Coast. Directed by Lamont Johnson, Kona Coast stars Richard Boone and the capable Vera Miles. Blondell has a supporting role — one of two dozen from 1950 (For Heaven's Sake) to 1981 (The Woman Inside, released two years after Blondell's death from leukemia). [Joan Blondell Movie Schedule.] Unfortunately, TCM isn't showing the super-rare (apparently due to rights issues) The Blue Veil, Curtis Bernhardt's 1951 melodrama that earned Blondell her...

When Troma announced a new film called Father’s Day, fans exclaimed “cool!”, but when they saw who was directing it, they muttered, “who the f*ck is Astron-6?” Well, Astron-6 is an independent film-making collective founded in 2007 by Adam Brooks and Jeremy Gillespie, with other members (Matt Kennedy, Conor Sweeney and Steven Kostanski) coming in after a few too many The Winnipeg Short Film Massacre festivals. The five filmmakers are equal partners as the company produces low-budget, 80′s-centric, genre-bending, independent movies that play on the expectations of the seasoned film-goer and often combine horror with comedy. That’s the gist of it.
Killer Film caught up with Jeremy Gillespie from Astron-6 as they’re frantically trying to finish Father’s Day for Troma Entertainment, to chat about the project and Canadian horror.
