In the "Family Guy" episode "Patriot Games", Peter (Seth MacFarlane) is enlisted to play for the New England Patriots after he charges through a crowd of people on his way to the bathroom at a high school reunion. Peter, the shallow egotist that he is, is soon fired for showboating, but at least he got to meet Tom Brady (himself). The plot continues into a snobs-vs.-slobs story wherein Peter becomes the coach for a British football team called the London Sillinannies.
Like every episode of "Family Guy," "Patriot Games" contains many, many asides, pop culture references, and throw-away gags presented without any context whatsoever. Case in point: early in the episode, two characters are watching the news on TV, and the announcer, having finished speaking about the main story of the night, announces "Coming up: America's hottest new curse word. Clemen!" Or maybe it's "kleeman." There is no explanation as to what "kleeman" means,...

The groundbreaking television sitcom version of "M*A*S*H" may have been centered on the Korean War, but it famously ran for 11 years, over three times as long as the war. Like a lot of series, the length of its run led to significant tonal shifts as writers and actors left the show and new creatives came on. In particular, "M*A*S*H" went from an acidic, satirical portrait of military cynicism at a mobile surgical unit (the 4077th) to a much more earnestly anti-war show.
You can trace a lot of those changes in the ways the series' characters changed and developed. In the first half of the show, most of the folk who work at the 4077th are either bureaucratic blowhards like Majors Frank Burns (Larry Linville) and Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan (Loretta Swit) or nihilistic, hedonist heroes like "Hawkeye" Pierce (Alan Alda). Surrounded by war and death, the characters had extremes to lean into,...

"Smokey and the Bandit" was a delightful '70s action-comedy movie; it spawned two sequels, the first of which was pretty damn good. For a modern audience looking back, the series was also remarkably star-studded. It featured beloved late actors like Burt Reynolds, Jackie Gleason, Patrick McCormick, and Mike Henry, most of whom are still fondly remembered over forty years after the first movie came out. Although the series itself isn't quite as well-known among today's young viewer as we'd probably prefer, most of its cast certainly is.
But what about the actors in the series who are still alive today? What are they up to? Let's check in on the lives and careers of the remaining "Smokey and the Bandit" cast, and see how they're holding up. We might never get to see that Seth MacFarlane-penned revival series we heard about back in 2020, but it's not time to...

As citizens nationwide have taken the streets to march for change over centuries-long racial disparities, a re-reckoning of racial disparities in television and film is occurring.
The path of least resistance for many who have a sincere desire to better racial equality is to cheer on this development without question, but that escapes the harder questions that a critical view of the situation can bring.
To refresh your memory, a number of voiceover actors these past two weeks have either voiced regret over playing non-white characters or agreed to step aside from non-white roles.
These include Alison Brie who voiced the half-Vietnamese Dianne Nguyen on BoJack Horseman; Jenny Slate who agreed to step down from voicing the half-black Missy on Big Mouth; and Mike Henry who agreed to step aside from the 20-year-old character of Cleveland on Family Guy.

Family Guy has a vacancy in the Cleveland Brown department following the departure of voice actor Mike Henry, and the perfect candidate to fill it has just presented himself. Jack Ryan and Suits star Wendell Pierce has taken to Twitter to express interest in landing the role.
Pierce tweeted series creator Seth McFarlane to give him a heads-up about his “campaign to voice the role myself on The Cleveland Show.” Presumably, the actor means the parent series rather than the cancelled spinoff, although there’s an outside chance the wording of his post was intentional and he’s calling for The Cleveland Show to be revived.

Wendell Pierce, the fan favorite actor from “The Wire” and recent star of “Clemency” and “Burning Cane,” has launched a social media campaign to be the new voice actor of Cleveland on “Family Guy.” Mike Henry, the original voice of Cleveland, announced last week he would be stepping away from the long-running Fox animated sitcom over the racial insensitivity of his casting.
“It’s been an honor to play Cleveland on ‘Family Guy’ for 20 years,” Henry wrote on social media. “I love this character, but persons of color should play characters of color. Therefore, I will be stepping down from the role.”
Henry’s “Family Guy” exit followed in the footsteps of Jenny Slate and Kristen Bell leaving their respective animated shows “Big Mouth” and “Central Park” over similar issues. Both actresses voiced biracial characters on their series. Pierce took to social media to say he is interested in being the new voice of Cleveland.

BoJack Horseman star Alison Brie has opened up about voicing Vietnamese-American character Diane Nguyen, and she has admitted that she regrets taking on the role.
Brie, who has also starred in the shows Community and Glow, took to social media with a statement.

“I now understand that people of color, should always voice people of color. We missed a great opportunity to represent the Vietnamese-American community accurately and respectfully, and for that I am truly sorry," she continued.

“The Office,” “Family Guy,” and “The Simpsons” are the latest television shows to make changes amid the nation’s ongoing protests regarding systemic racism and police brutality.
The Wrap reports that a Season 9 episode of “The Office,” titled “Dwight’s Christmas,” has been edited to remove a scene where a character engages in blackface. The old version of the episode has been removed from Netflix and will not appear on Peacock when the series moves to NBCUniversal’s streaming service next year. The old version of the episode will be replaced with the updated version for syndication airings, according to the publication.
“‘The Office’ is about a group of people trying to work together with mutual respect despite the inappropriate actions of their boss and assistant manager,” series creator Greg Daniels said in a statement to The Wrap. “The show employed satire to expose unacceptable behavior and deliver a message of inclusion.

Although the Family Guy TV show dropped in the ratings yet again last year, thanks to its demo ratings, it ranked as the sixth best performer among scripted Fox TV series. Now the Seth MacFarlane sitcom is back for a 16th season, and in February of 2018, showrunner Rich Appel signed a new three-year deal with 20th Century Fox TV. Right now, this program's chances are looking better than not, but will Family Guy be cancelled or renewed for season 17? Stay tuned. **Status update below.

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the Batman TV show (1966-68) starring Adam West and Burt Ward as Batman and his teen partner Robin the Boy Wonder. The show was a huge hit when first released and still has a loyal following today. The show was a clever satire, not only on super heroes but also on 1960s pop-culture in general. Cinelinx celebrates ABC’s Batman at 50.

The ratings for Family Guy keep coming down but the Fox series continues to be a cash cow for the studio. Will it ever be cancelled (for the second time)? Move to a cable channel like American Dad! did? Will it return for the 2015-16 season? Stay tuned.
On Family Guy, Peter Griffin and his family and friends continue to have crazy mishaps in the Rhode Island town of Quahog. The voice cast includes Seth MacFarlane, Alex Borstein, Seth Green, Mila Kunis, and Mike Henry.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- typically the following morning, around 11:30am Est/8:30am Pst. Refresh to see the latest. (more…)...

"Family Guy" hit Ballroom 20 on Saturday (July 26) for its annual Comic-Con panel, an event with kinda tends to ebb and flow in hype based on whether or not Seth MacFarlane is there to mock question-askers. This was a second consecutive Seth MacFarlane-free year. Last year he was working on "A Million Ways To Die In The West." This year, his absence was unexplained [on the "Family Guy" panel, but it came up at "American Dad" subsequently] and raises the possibility that Seth MacFarlane has just become too big for making fun of questioners at Comic-Con. Fortunately, in lieu of Seth MacFarlane, the "Family Guy" team arrived with a longer clip reel for the season's hour-long "The Simpsons Guy" crossover event, which will air on September 28. At TCA press tour last week we got a very brief sizzle reel that included jokes about the Springfield location ("I can't imagine we're allowed to...

If you’ve always wondered what would happen if Peter Griffin and Homer Simpson hung out at a bar while Bart and Stewie made prank phone calls, Family Guy is about to satisfy your crossover craving. In the Sept. 28 season premiere, “The Simpsons Guy,” the albino Griffins wind up by accident in Springfield, where they are greeted warmly by the hepatits-y Simpsons. But a fast friendship christened with delicious doughnuts may be forever destroyed by an argument over Pawtucket Patriot Ale and Duff Beer, which leads to an epic chicken fight.

A new tool allows advertisers to hone in on YouTube channels that match up well with specific brands. It's called Vnetic, and its Outrigger Media's attempt to leverage its treasure trove of YouTube data in a brand-facing manner. Vnetic helps brands optimize their YouTube campaigns by offering "data about the quality, brand safety, and subject matter expertise of producers, as well as the audience that they deliver," according to a press release from Outrigger Media. The service then allows its users to target ads against specific channels, which, according to Outrigger Media CEO Mike Henry, will "balance reach and price against context and brand safety." Vnetic makes use of Outrigger Media's Openslate platform, which collects information from more than 220,000 YouTube channels (and also powers Tubefilter's own YouTube charts). This mountain of data allows Vnetic to paint an accurate and precise picture for its users, a group that already includes more...

Winning an award calls for a celebration. Unless you're Mike Henry's (Fox) TV-news boss Harris (Wendell Pierce), that is.
He doesn't want a fuss made over his getting an Excellence in Journalism honor from the National Press Organization, but Mike fully intends to make a big deal about it in "Party," Thursday's (Jan. 2) episode of NBC's "The Michael J. Fox Show."
Harris seems satisfied with a personal French bread pizza as his reward -- "I don't need to do anything big" -- until Mike pitches the idea of a gathering in a private room at a steak house, and a limo ride to get there.
However, Mike soon learns "none of the guys can make it." He gets the idea of telling them it's for Harris' engagement instead when one of the fellows (guest star Malcolm-Jamal Warner) responds much better to that apparent reason.
"Don't tell Harris," Mike advises.

Things have gotten even better for some of the voice actors on Family Guy. THR reports that Alex Borstein, Seth Green, Mila Kunis, and Mike Henry have collectively negotiated a big raise from studio 20th Century Fox Television.
Under the new deal, the voice actors will each be paid between $175,000 and $225,000 per episode for at least two more seasons -- and for as many as five seasons of the animated series.
The first season of the new contract will be season 12. That's curently in production and is expected to start airing next fall on Fox. While Family Guy hasn't been officially renewed beyond that, there's no sign that Fox intends to stop making the very lucrative series.
Series creator Seth MacFarlane, who voices several Family Guy characters, is covered under a seperate and more complicated deal.

On Nov. 14. 1988, viewers met a different kind of television reporter ... snarky, edgy and just out of Betty Ford Center rehab.
The sitcom "Murphy Brown," now exactly 25 years old, earned title star Candice Bergen five Emmy Awards over its decade-long CBS run. "Finally!" she tells Zap2it. "I have no idea why it's taken so long. I was always told it was because the music rights were so expensive, because every episode opened with a Motown song. I'm thrilled it's going back on -- and without commercials, which is lovely. I barely watched the show in its last five years, so I haven't seen it in a long time."
