Focus Features’ “The Holdovers” is one of the sweetest movies of the year and is set to become a new Christmas classic. Written by David Hemingson and directed by Alexander Payne, the 1970s-set story follows Paul Giamatti as a school professor tasked with staying behind on campus to look after students not going home for Christmas. What follows is a charming, touching tale about two foes who learn to become friends. Giamatti gives a knockout performance while Da’Vine Joy Randolph is a hot contender for Best Supporting Actress for her role as a cook mourning the death of her son. The movie’s strongest point, however, is its writing.
“Whiskey Cavalier” creator and “Black-Ish” and “American Dad!” scribe David Hemingson crafted the script. He has never been nominated for an Oscar before but we expect that that he’ll win one this year. We’re predicting he will take home...

Alexander Payne‘s movies often fare well in the writing categories at the Oscars with four of his films so far nominated for either Best Original Screenplay or Best Adapted Screenplay.
His second movie, “Election,” was nominated for only Adapted Screenplay in 2000 after it turned Tom Perrotta’s 1998 novel of the same name into a film. Payne was nominated with his writing partner Jim Taylor, although they lost to John Irving for “The Cider House Rules.” “Sideways” then picked up five nominations in 2005 including an Adapted Screenplay bid for Payne and Taylor after they turned Rex Pickett’s 2004 novel of the same name into a hit movie. Payne and Taylor won this time around.
In 2012, “The Descendants” repeated the record of “Sideways,” matching five nominations and one Adapted Screenplay victory. This time, Payne won alongside Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. They adapted the 2007 novel of the same name from Kaui Hart Hemmings.

The original film editor for “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” needed her mind scrubbed clean after suffering from a “nervous breakdown” during the chaotic production, according to producer Anthony Bregman.
Bregman revealed to “Hollywood Gold” podcast host and fellow film producer Daniela Taplin Lundberg that the unconventional tactics behind the 2004 drama led to an editor (whom he did not name) being let go early in production. Valdís Óskarsdóttir eventually stepped in to finish the cut.
“All that footage went to our editor, a traditional editor, someone who has won Academy Awards and is like a big-time editor. Lucky to get her, but it was not at all like she was used to,” Bregman said. “Because every shot was every set up, the editors’ assistant couldn’t organize the folders for the footage in a traditional way. So the first day’s footage after 10 days had not been cut. We also were like,...

“Now, you’re in the sunken place.”
If you recognize that line, you know the film whose script the Writers Guild of America just voted as the best of the past 22 years. Jordan Peele’s Oscar-winning Get Out tops the WGA’s just-released list of the “101 Greatest Screenplays of the 21st Century (So Far)”. See the full list below.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Social Network, Parasite, No Country for Old Men and Moonlight round out the top six. All of them won a Screenplay Oscar, but three of the next four on the WGA’s list — There Will Be Blood (No. 7), Inglorious Basterds (No. 8) and Memento (No. 10) — did not. The No. 9 script, Almost Famous, took Academy Award for Adapted Screenplay.
Christopher Nolan wrote four of the 101 top screenplays — 2000’s Memento, 2008’s The Dark Knight (No. 26), 2010’s Inception (No. 37) and 2006’s The Prestige (No. 82). Dark Night and Prestige...

Martin Scorsese, Sigourney Weaver, Giuseppe Tornatore and French multi-hyphenate Pierre Bismuth will hold onstage conversations at the upcoming Rome Film Festival, which Monday announced the world premiere of Italian director Paolo Virzi’s new comedy, “Notti Magiche,” as its first title.
Scorsese, as previously announced, is being honored with a lifetime achievement award by the fest and will hold forth Oct. 22 with artistic director Antonio Monda on the Italian films he considers most influential, one of which is Pier Paolo Pasolini’s “Accattone,” Monda said. Scorsese is scheduled to see Pope Francis the following day, Monda said, then reappear on the Rome fest stage Oct. 24 to present the freshly restored version of a still undisclosed Italian classic. There is a possibility that Scorsese may show footage from his long-gestating gangster pic “The Irishman.”
The Oscar-winning director will receive his achievement award from Paolo Taviani, the surviving member of venerable directorial duo the Taviani brothers.

Likely Story to produce thriller.
Netflix film group chief Scott Stuber has proffered another sample of the original feature stable he is assembling, signing Charlie Kaufman to write and direct Iain Reid’s bestseller I’m Thinking Of Ending Things.
The novel was named an NPR Best Book of the Year in 2016 and examines the fragility of the psyche and the limitations of solitude.
On a road trip to meet his parents on their secluded farm, Jake’s girlfriend is thinking of ending things. When Jake makes an unexpected detour, leaving her stranded, a twisted mix of palpable tension, psychological frailty, and sheer terror ensues.
The project will reunite Kaufman with Likely Story’s Anthony Bregman (Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind). Both men will produce with Stefanie Azpiazu, while Reid will serve as co-producer.

With the likes of Hannibal, Fargo, and, most recently, Westworld debuting as t.v. shows to amazing receptions, it’s definitely open season for movies to make the jump to the small screen. But it’s still one hell of a surprise to see Michel Gondry’s sublime, imaginative Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind being prepped for t.v. with Anonymous Content (the production company behind the original movie) teaming up with Universal Cable Productions. As revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, it’s early days yet for the romantic drama, which revolves around an estranged couple (of course, played by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet in the movie) who decide to erase each others memories of the other, with Zev Borow (Forever, Chuck) approached to pen the script for the series. Released in 2004, Michel Gondry, Pierre Bismuth, and Charlie Kaufman’s romantic dystopia Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind has already risen to the rank of a modern classic. (In fact, we named it our best film of the ’00s, back in 2010.) But, just as those who fail to hold on to the memories of their mistakes are doomed to repeat them, so, too, are successful movies inevitably destined to get turned into TV shows in 2016. And so, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Universal Cable Productions is closing in on a deal to make a TV series based on Gondry’s Oscar-winning film.

It was around the time Pierre Bismuth won his Oscar as an original story creator on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind that he stumbled upon an unknown work by Edward Ruscha via a BBC documentary. This tape captured the artist as he created a fake rock dubbed “Rocky II,” a fiberglass/resin creation that ultimately replaced “Rocky I” once it was proven unsuitable for longevity in the desert (having been manufactured from wheat paste). It’s a fascinating discovery—a piece by a renowned figure that nobody’s seen or even knows exists because it’s missing from his resume of work. So, posing as a journalist in 2009 to enter a Ruscha retrospective, Bismuth confronts the pop artist with the titular question of his feature debut: Where Is Rocky II?
Ruscha admits its existence, bidding Bismuth “good luck” in finding it. So of course he drops everything to do exactly that.

'The Aviator' movie with Leonardo DiCaprio as bizarre billionaire Howard Hughes: Bloated biopic. 'The Aviator' movie review: What's not good for the Spruce Goose… Imagine Citizen Kane directed by the Steven Spielberg of The Color Purple, Schindler's List, Amistad, and Saving Private Ryan. The final result would look something like a Barry Levinson film – for instance, the superficial and phony Bugsy. Or, an even more appropriate example, the superficial, phony, and bloated The Aviator. Except, of course, that Levinson is not the man responsible for the 2004 mega-production starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the eccentric, billionaire ladies' man Howard Hughes. Strangely enough, that man is Martin Scorsese, the director of hard-hitting films such as Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and Gangs of New York. Scorsese, a fan of Old Hollywood, apparently wanted to have some fun with the reported $110 million budget (approx. $138 million in 2016) made available to him. The director no doubt had a ball while making The Aviator,...

With the 2015 Oscars coming up this weekend, we go back ten years to see if the 2005 awards still hold up today...
It was during an interview with Mark Kermode that I asked him how long someone really needs to gestate on a film, and come up with a proper review. "About ten years", he said. I get his point. Each awards season, it's about, at best, what feels like the best film right then. Not the one that settles over a period of time, or shows you new things each time you watch it. But the one that you watched once, and affected you once. It's the only way, anyway, I can think of why A Beautiful Mind won a Best Picture Oscar.
This weekend, then, is the Academy Awards once more. And I thought it'd be worth rewinding ten years, to see whether the Academy's choices on February 27th...

The term ‘hybrid’ has become increasingly debatable when discussing the divide between fiction and nonfiction, though it’s a rather apt description of the French artist Pierre Bismuth’s cinematic inquiry, Where is Rocky II? Perhaps best known for his Oscar winning collaboration with Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry on the script for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Bismuth became obsessed with a fake rock, called Rocky II, that Ed Ruscha placed amongst its geological counterparts in the Mojave Desert around the release of the eponymous Stallone film in 1979. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," which opened 10 years ago this week (on March 19, 2004), was just your typical boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl, boy-has-painful-memories-of-girl-scrubbed-from-his-brain story. Of course, the movie was a lot more than that. It put director Michel Gondry on the map, offered Jim Carrey one of his most acclaimed dramatic roles, and became beloved among moviegoers who appreciated its poetic, funny, and sad take on romance.
"Eternal Sunshine" was a modest hit a decade ago; today, it's commonly regarded as one of the best films of the new millennium. Even so, though you may have seen it enough times for it to be permanently implanted in your memory, there are still things you may not know about the film, from its seemingly improvisational shooting process to how unbelievably primitive the special effects were, to how Carrey and Gondry nearly came to blows. Here, then, are 25 of the movie's secrets; come back...

The end of the road. The scripts that should be studied, dissected, and taught for their quality, their timeliness, and their impact on the film industry as a whole. Some were perfect for their time and place. Some were ahead of their time. Some defined their generation. And one still rules all, forty years after it was written.

You’re just like your brother. Ignorant, uneducated hillbilly, except the only special thing about you is your peculiar ideas about love-making, which is no love-making at all.
Nothing spices up a movie theater better than a little sex and violence; Arthur Penn’s 1967 film broke new ground on that front. Fictionalizing the partnership of famous gangsters Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, the film starred Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty as the title criminals, while...

A first look into what’s ahead from some of our favorite auteurs, 2013′s CineMart (held during the Int. Film Festival Rotterdam) boosts an impressive selection of projects from the likes of Argentina’s Lucrecia Martel (The Headless Woman) who’ll be lensing Zama – the adaptation of a period piece about Don Diego de Zama, a 17th-century official for the Spanish crown based in Asuncion del Paraguay, who awaits his transfer to the city of Buenos Aires. We’ve got Greece’s Yorgos Lanthimos from Dogtooth and Alps fame, who the last time we spoke to mentioned how he was looking to break into English language film territory and we think The Lobster might be that first foray. Among the other Cannes Film Festival introduced filmmakers who’ll be seeking coin in Rotterdam we have Michael Rowe (Leap Year) who brings Rest Home, Alice Rohrwacher (Corpo celeste) who tackles Le Meraviglie,...

Few genres of film inspire more personal responses than the romantic comedy. Given how much of our lives is spent on love and romance (falling into it, falling out of it, chasing it, giving up on it), it's no surprise that the rom-com has remained one of the most popular formulas since the dawn of cinema, and while the genre has undisputed classics, you can end up cherishing certain films purely because of their connection to your own life. They can help pull you out of a post break-up tailspin, they can comfort you through unrequited love, and, if a film hits you at the height of your passion for someone, they can end up associated forever, even blinding you to the movie's flaws -- seeing "Elizabethtown" in the midst of first love left this writer swooning after exiting the theater (thankfully, a subsequent rewatch put me straight as to how terrible it is.

If you need your fix of the existential stylings of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Synecdoche, New York” filmmaker Charlie Kaufman, you may still be waiting a little while for his movie-musical “Frank or Francis.” Luckily, there’s another project on the horizon that should more than grab your attention.
According to Deadline, Kaufman has just closed the deal for his first novel under Grand Central Publishing, with the plotline being kept under wraps. We imagine it’s going to be as bonkers and enlightening as any one of the films that he’s written or directed, and could possibly even be a book commenting on the writing of a book by somebody writing a book, or something like that. Kaufman is tackling the novel even as he continues to develop the script to “Frank or Francis” for himself to direct, which is a musical Hollywood satire where...

This year got off to an explosive start on the comic book movie front, with "The Green Hornet" making its premiere in the first few weeks of 2011 and impressing the heck out of us here at Splash Page HQ.
I'll admit to being a bit skeptical of Michel Gondry's take on the classic pulp hero as played by funnyman Seth Rogen, but between Gondry's unique camera work, Rogen's spin on the character, and the awesome work of Jay Chou as Kato, I was a believer when the end credits began to roll. And now we have all the information on the "Green Hornet" DVD and Blu-Ray — just in case you're looking to add the film to your collection, too.
I've pasted the full "Green Hornet" DVD and Blu-Ray specs below, as provided in the official press release from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

To continue my review of my epic journey to watch all my films from A-z, this is the Fifth part.
For those that don’t know I am watching all 700+ Dvd/Bluray films from A-z which has so far taken me 2.5 years to get to the end of H’s!
I thought I should retrospectively review each letter and give my top 5 films from each alpha block and maybe bring your attention to some films you may not have seen, films you’ve not seen in ages or films you should give another try. Click A, B, C and D to read previous parts.
The E’s are a long time coming but here it is. Firstly some films beginning with E that let down alpha group for me personally, I’m not a big fan of Easy Rider, nor the English Patient, also couldn’t care for Erin Brockovich,...

Charlie Kaufman looked genuinely humbled when presenter Alan Alda read his name. Kaufman picked up his first WGA Award and a boost to his Oscar momentum Saturday night for original screenplay for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which he wrote from a story by Kaufman, Eternal director Michel Gondry and Pierre Bismuth. "To say you're honored to be in this company -- it sounds like it's not true, but it is. So thanks," Kaufman said after noting that he'd gotten to know most of the other feature writing nominees during their tour of the awards-season "circuit" during the past few weeks. In the adapted screenplay category, the scribes gave the nod to Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor for their screen transformation of the novel Sideways by Rex Pickett. Payne, also a contender in Sunday's Oscar derby for adapted screenplay and for directing Sideways, echoed Kaufman's sentiment about "the company we're in" in accepting his trophy at the 57th annual WGA Awards ceremony, hosted by actor John O'Hurley at the Hollywood Palladium.
