It's a miracle Peter Berg's "Hancock" exists at all.
The revisionist Will Smith superhero flick began life in 1996 as a spec screenplay by Vy Vincent Ngo called "Tonight, He Comes." The tale of a surly, alcoholic antihero was way ahead of its time; it was a refutation of comic book movies that weren't being made in the absurd volume we're seeing today. It was also startlingly original, which prompted no less an A-lister than Tony Scott to acquire it as a potential directing project. It was one of the hottest scripts in Hollywood, and, for six solid years, it went absolutely nowhere.
"Tonight, He Comes" nearly went before cameras in the early 2000s under the direction of Michael Mann, then nearly came to fruition with the likes of Jonathan Mostow and Gabriele Muccino at the helm. Vince Gilligan and John August were brought in to rework the script in...

Jose Padilha and Eric Newman are set to take over as showrunners on the second season of Netflix's Pablo Escobar drug empire series "Narcos".
This marks the third change of showrunners for the series. Chris Brancato and then Adam Fierro served in that capacity during the first season. Brancato left before the series debut due to a deal which has seen him take over ABC's upcoming biblical drama "Of Kings and Prophets".
Wagner Moura stars in "Narcos" which traces the story of the Medellin Cartel, once the world's most ambitious and violent trafficking organization. Season Two will screen sometime next year.

Narcos showrunner Adam Fierro stepped down after apparently completing his contractual requirements for season two of the show. He had replaced season-one showrunner Chris Brancato, who departed earlier this year. Is there something in the Narcos production office bottled water? Or are these guys all leaving to follow their true dream of being drug kingpins? A The Shield and The Walking Dead alum, Fierro was initially hired because Netflix wanted the show to take a new creative direction in season two. Guess there will be a third creative direction! Here's to hoping it's just as great. Narcos recently landed two Golden Globes nominations, for best drama series and for best actor, Wagner Moura.

Adam Fierro has exited his role as executive producer on “Narcos” for Season 2, TheWrap has learned. The former “The Walking Dead” consulting producer had been billed as the new showrunner on the Pablo Escobar drug trafficking drama upon its renewal. The show charts the rise of the Colombian drug trafficker, as played by Brazilian actor Wagner Moura. The show also stars Boyd Holbrook as DEA agent Steve Murphy, “Game of Thrones” alum Pedro Pascal as his partner Javier Pena, and Luis Guzman as cartel boss Gacha. There is a behind-the-scenes change on Netflix’s breakout new drama Narcos. Adam Fierro, who had been tapped as showrunner for Season 2, has departed. Fierro succeeded Chris Brancato, who left in April for an overall deal at ABC Studios. Brancato had joined the Pablo Escobar drama midway through production on Season 1 and is credited as co-creator alongside Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro who had written the original script. While critics have mostly been kind to Netflix's "Narcos," our own Erik McClanahan was far less enthused in the series. In particular, he had issues with the Pov of the narrative, which tells the story of Pablo Escobar through the eyes of a DEA agent, and it wasn't helped by the atrocious voiceover given to that character (in fact, it's so bad, I couldn't bring myself watch any more after the first episode). But Netflix has the faith, because they've ordered up more. THR reports that "Narcos" has been renewed for season two. The creative team will get a slight switcheroo with Adam Fierro ("The Shield") stepping in as showrunner for Chris Brancato ("Hannibal"), and the writers room is being put together for the next wave of episodes. It only hit Netflix last Friday, but the online streaming service has already renewed Narcos for a second season. As a result, it can be added to the long list of successful original dramas that they’ve produced; House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Marco Polo, Bloodline, Sense8, Daredevil, and a number of others have all received renewals from Netflix in recent years as well as serious awards attention.
The second season of the drug trafficking drama revolving around Pablo Escobar and the DEA agents who set out to take him down doesn’t have a premiere date just yet, but common sense says it will return around the same time next year. Adam Fierro will serve as the new showrunner, as Chris Brancato has left to work on Kings and Prophets for ABC. For Narcos Season 2, Adam Fierro (The Shield) will take over as showrunner for Chris Brancato (Hannibal). Former Shield executive producer Adam Fierro has been tapped as executive producer/showrunner of USA Network‘s newly picked up drama series Rush, written, directed and executive produced by Jonathan Levine. The project, from Fox 21, centers on Dr. William Rush (Tom Ellis), who is not your average on-call doctor: He’s not attached to any hospital, he’s highly discreet no matter what the ailment — as long as the client can pay his cash-only premium — and the doctor can party with the best of them. Little Engine’s Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo also executive produce. Bolstered by the star power and screen charm of Will Smith, the 2008 superhero movie Hancock powered its way to $624million at the global box office.
Its success came despite predictions that it would be a flop and accusations of homophobia by Us gay rights campaigners.
In addition, director Peter Berg's film was an original concept not based on any comic or cartoon so it was purely Will Smith striding about in Wolverine-inspired biker leathers that proved the big draw. The X-Men influences continued with Charlize Theron's character, who turned out to be a fellow superhuman capable of Storm-style meteorological mayhem.
No surprise that there has long been talk of a Hancock 2.

Will Smith has an extensive resume that consists of many blockbuster movies, some of them becoming even bigger sequels. But out of all the movies he has done, a few movies are not deserving of being produced as one. Hancock is just one of the few movies that has not earned the right to have a sequel. But Will Smith and Peter Berg don’t see it that way. Apparently they want to have a sequel, in an interview with Comic Book Movie (via The Playlist), the director revealed that he, Will Smith, and [producers] Michael Mann & Akiva Goldsman have been talking about a potential Hancock 2.

[1] The summer of '08 was a pretty great one for superheroes, with Iron Man kicking off the blockbuster season and The Dark Knight and The Incredible Hulk following months after. One superpowered film that proved not up to par that season, however, was Peter Berg's Hancock. Starring Will Smith as a disgraced vigilante superhero, the movie seemed at first like a breath of fresh air, but ultimately left viewers disappointed thanks to a poorly conceived, poorly executed plot twist and an oddly uneven tone. Still, it was a box office success, so it wasn't long before rumors began floating around of a Hancock 2. Fast-forward three and a half years, and not only are we barely any closer to getting a second Hancock, I'd wager that most moviegoers have forgotten about the first Hancock altogether. Berg and Smith haven't, though, and Berg insists that the sequel is still in...

As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

The Walking Dead, Season One, Episode Six, “Ts-19″
Written by Frank Darabont and Adam Fierro
Directed by Guy Ferland
After a strong outing last week, The Walking Dead closed things off with an episode that peaked in terms of ratings – it was one of the most-watched hours of TV in Us cable history – but also showed evidence of the creative difficulties that have intermittently plagued this season. With this week’s vague contradictory statements from AMC following the announcement that Frank Darabont was dissolving the show’s writing staff, it’s at least clear that there will be creative shakeups of one kind or another in the 10-11 months until the show’s expanded (and likely higher-budget) second season.
After last week’s creepily utopian cliffhanger, with Rick and the gang seemingly having arrived at a place of genuine shelter and possibility (the Center for Disease Control, which was only...

Omg, a melee!*Here be spoilers.
Director: Guy Ferland.
Writers: Frank Darabont, Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, Charlie Adlard, and Adam Fierro.
Season 1 ended with a much need bang in Episode 6 of "The Walking Dead." The series' writers have firmly entrenched this zombie styled show in the genre of drama, with any action or thrills added in as an afterthought. Here is going out on a limb, congratulations Frank Darabont for firing your writing staff, as a zombie apocalypse should not bet set in drama, but in horror. Where was the horror in Episode 6, "Ts-19?"
For those who missed the show, you did not miss much. Agonizing dialogue, the same sub-plots, and little to no action leaves Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his dwindling crew on the road, this time, out of Atlanta. Their encounter with Dr. Jenner proves mostly pointless, with some explanations on the spread of the disease inside...

Jenner is wary of the band of survivors that have showed up at his doorstep, and insists on administering blood tests. Everyone passes. Their first night at the Cdc is as close to normal as anyone has come since the outbreak. They enjoy hot showers, cots, rooms with doors, a big dinner, and lots of wine. A rec room supplies checkers for the kids and books for the adults. It's paradise. Almost. Shane, drunk off his ass, confronts Lori about his love for her. So, Episode 6 of "The Walking Dead" aired last night and Season 1 comes to a close. Did you like the show? The ending of the season was definitely climactic and Dr. Jenner's character is more than a little reprehensible. The old saying "no one likes a quitter" applies here, with a couple characters ignoring this quality advice. But the show must go on!
Below is an inside look at the season finale, which shows Frank Darabont and Robert Kirkman talking about the zombie plague on a global scale. Other characters get in a note or two, but much of the clip is dedicated to grief e.g. Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn) losing his life partner and Andrea (Laurie Holden) losing her sister, Amy (Emma Bell). Have a look at the clip below, which may or may not hint at Season 2.

Episode Title: "Ts-19"
Written By: Adam Fierro and Frank Darabont
Story: Following the assault on their camp, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his fellow survivors of the zombie apocalypse seek refuge at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. Once there, our heroes are treated to food, wine and a whole lot of information about how the zombie infection functions and what's happening in the rest of the world. The answers, unfortunately, are not what Rick and his companions were hoping to hear.
With the Cdc on the cusp of power failure, Doctor Jenner (Noah Emmerich) springs an alternative option on the group — an option that could well be their damnation or their salvation.
Up In Smoke: That's all she wrote, folks — that's the end of the first season of "The Walking Dead." So, what did you think?
As far as season finales go, "Ts-19" was an unusual affair.

The Walking Dead showrunner Frank Darabont has decided to drop the show's writing team for the upcoming second season, reports suggest. It was announced last month that the zombie drama's six-part first season would be followed by a longer 13-episode run in 2011. Deadline now claims that Darabont has chosen to axe his writing staff, which includes former The Shield writers Charles Eglee, Glen Mazzara and Adam Fierro, and instead assign scripts to freelance writers. Episode 6 "Ts-19"The AMC has just launched a new sneak peek of Episode 6 of "The Walking Dead," entitled "Ts-19." The title stands for test subject 19 and in this clip, an infected, soon to be zombiefied, patient is seen - dying. Also shown are various parts of the brain e.g. synapses, dendrites, neurotransmitters etc., before the disease spreads.
The clip takes place within the Center for Disease Control and while the reel is interesting, it does not explain how the patient comes back to life after zombiefication. Once the major organs shut down and the brain expires, is there really a way for a corpse to come back to life? Maybe some help from anaerobic metabolism might help generate energy, but zombie experts need to chime in with their thoughts below. Check out the clip, also below!

This is an editorial comment on television and originality in general. There are so many police or detective shows on television, that AMC's approach to television is welcomed by this cinema enthusiast. Does there really need to be three versions of "CSI?" No absolutely not. Instead, there needs to be at least one zombie influenced series showing each year. This is not too much to ask, by those who love creative, horrifying, zombie influenced programming. So, standby "The Walking Dead," leave comments on AMC's blog below,...

The Walking Dead PosterThe latest movie clip on AMC's "The Walking Dead" series is called "It Is About Survival." Frank Darabont, Robert Kirkman and others try to convince viewers that this television series is not about the zombies, but about the characters. However, this zombie watcher dares you to have a zombie themed series without zombies and for you to still be successful. Zombies create the tension, darken the atmosphere, create conflict and horror, while the characters develop in this undead environment, in response to these elements. This counter-argument is included not to be pretentious, but to play devil's advocate to the clip's central point. Have a look at the four minute clip inside and decide if the series is about the characters, or the zombies, or something else. Lots of new footage is included as well.

The Walking Dead PosterHere is the latest promotional poster for the upcoming zombie television series "The Walking Dead." In the graphic character Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) moseys on up to the big city by horseback. The undead, which haunt the series are absent, but bloody mayhem and chaos are represented by long lines of cars exiting the city and by a derailed train in the right panel. The sun is covered by clouds and this could be symbolic of hopelessness; this is conjecture. Either way, "The Walking Dead" continues to draw closer, with a release October 31st.
