On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

It's 20 years since the release of Henry Selick's adaptation of Roald Dahl's James And The Giant Peach - a sweet and sometimes macabre fantasy brought to life with a charming mix of live-action and stop-motion animation. It's almost September, which means a whole new slew of titles on Netflix! August proved pretty lucrative on the quality title front, but it looks as though September it's going to blow the rundown out of the water.
TV takes spotlight this month, with the latest full seasons of "The Walking Dead," "New Girl," "The League," "The Blacklist," "Arrow," "Bones," and "Parks and Recreation" primed and ready for streaming before their fall premieres. And fans still mourning the loss of "How I Met Your Mother" (in more ways than one) can rewatch the ninth and final season to their heart's content. Ah, memories. Showtime's recently departed "Californication" can be seen in its entirety (Seasons 1 -7) as well, starting September 1. That's a lot of TV.
Movie fans have plenty to look forward to from Netflix in September, too. Sam Raimi's undersung 1998 thriller "A Simple Plan" hits the streaming service September...

Franklin Franklin (Lucas) plays the alphorn and dreams of Switzerland. His crazy brother sends him fingernail clippings in the mail. One of his neighbours is a forgetful pot-head, the other a gruff busy-body who doesn’t miss anything. Across the street live a mother and her fifteen-year-old daughter, whom he likes to watch from his window, but none of these are Franklin’s real problem. The real problem is his landlord; lying dead on the kitchen floor. Switzerland seems further and further away.

Oddball loner Franklin Franklin (Matt Lucas) finds his life spinning out of control when he inadvertently kills his landlord (Peter Stormare) and tries to get rid of the corpse. Living in a cramped studio flat between punk-rock wannabe (Johnny Knoxville) and a nosy old codger (James Caan), he's also obsessed by teen tramp Juno Temple. Director Jonas Akerlund's day-glo oddity is the perfect vehicle for Lucas's first stab at a lead role.

Chris Mills, who adapted the screenplay for Small Apartments from his novel of the same name, considers this film a black comedy; but there’s very little humor to be found. Set in a seedy apartment complex, the characters who reside in these small apartments are too trashy and depressing to be very funny. However, this doesn’t stop the characters from being surprisingly engaging.
Take, for instance, the lead character Franklin Franklin—played by Matt Lucas (remember Kristin Wiig’s weird roommate in Bridesmaids?). Franklin is a socially awkward man who never wears pants, preferring to show off his white briefs and green clogs. As he decides how to deal with his dead landlord’s body that is lying on his kitchen floor, we get insight into his peculiar mind and that of his crazy brother Bernard (James Marsden). Neighboring Groans: Akerland’s Tone Deaf Latest Cranks Manic Quirk
Swedish filmmaker Jonas Akerlund returns with his third feature, Small Apartments, based on a novel by Chris Mills which was the top prize recipient in a Canadian Three-Day Novel Contest back in 2000. Akerlund’s 2002 debut, Spun, may have generated a sort of cult audience, but his last narrative directorial effort was a dismally received 2009 Dennis Quaid apocalyptic thriller Horsemen. This latest title still doesn’t even come close to outshining his best work, namely music videos for Madonna’s “Ray of Light” or Lady Gaga’s “Telephone”, and instead sees the filmmaker returning to garish, quirk oriented material, adapted for the screen by the text’s original author. While this may be miles ahead of the original source material of Akerlund’s Quaid clunker (which had been penned by Dave Callaham, best known for his Expendables screenplays), this tonally uneven...

Matt Lucas (Alice In Wonderland, Bridesmaids) leads a hilarious allstar cast in the new comedy Small Apartments, available February 19th from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Directed by award-winning film and music video director Jonas Åkerlund (Spun, Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi”), the film premiered at the 2012 South by Southwest Film Festival. Nick Nunziata of Chud.com hailed the film, saying “They don’t make them like this anymore. Actually they’ve never made them like this before.”
Lucas appears in his first leading role as “Franklin Franklin,” a clumsy recluse who embarks on a hapless cover-up after accidentally killing his landlord. Also starring in the film is Billy Crystal (When Harry Met Sally), Juno Temple (The Dark Knight Rises), James Marsden (X-Men: The Last Stand), Peter Stormare (Fargo), Amanda Plummer (Pulp Fiction), Dolph Lundgren (The Expendables), Rosie Perez (Pineapple Express), and Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect), with James Caan (The Godfather) and...

Matt Lucas, who was so awesome in TV’s Little Britain, just as he was weird in Bridesmaids, appears in his first leading role in the 2012 comedy Small Apartments.

Trapped in his seedy La apartment with the body of the landlord on the kitchen floor, Franklin is surrounded by eccentric neighbors, including a stoner (Johnny Knoxville, Jackass: The Movie) and his girlfriend (Rebel Wilson, Pitch Perfect), a wanna-be stripper (Juno Temple, Killer Joe) and an artist (James Caan, The Gambler). Small Apartments, remember that one? Sure you do, we’re talking about Jonas Akerlund‘s latest movie which will finally open this February! But, until that happens, we have a completely new & (let me say) – a completely weird trailer for the whole thing, and I’m sure you’re going to love it! Check out the rest of this report for more details…
In case you’re not so familiar with this project, I will first inform you that this dark comedy premiered at the SXSW festival this March and that Jonas Akerlund directed it from a Chris Millis‘ script which centers on a guy named Franklin Franklin who kills his landlord by mistake.
Franklin Franklin is a fully realized and sympathetic protagonist in the vein of Ignatius Reilly, a simple man who yearns for “a land of pastoral serenity” devoid of the irritants of contemporary urban life. He lives...

Remember Kristen Wiig’s oddball roommates in Bridesmaids? Well, actors Matt Lucas (Little Britain) and Rebel Wilson are back together in Small Apartments, a comedy about one sad Swiss-obsessed man’s misadventures after his landlord drops dead in his kitchen. Lucas plays the sad man, one unfortunately named Franklin Franklin who plays the alphorn in his undies. Wilson pops up as another character that only she could play.
The film, which premiered at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival, also stars Billy Crystal, Juno Temple, James Marsden, James Caan, and Johnny Knoxville. It arrives on DVD and video-on-demand on Feb.

You may recognize comedic actor Matt Lucas from his work in the U.K.- based sketch comedy show Little Britain or as Kristen Wiig's passive aggressive roommate in Bridesmaids. His comic chops are top notch, but he recently test drove his American accent and his dramatic acting skills in Small Apartments, which made its World Premiere at this year's South by Southwest Film Festival.
Set in the grimy, hyperreality created by music video auteur Jonas Åkerlund (the man responsible for creating Lady Gaga and Beyonce's technicolored "Telephone" video as well as many-a-Madonna vids) , Matt stars as Franklin Franklin, a man who has an affinity for Switzerland, orange soda, blowing into his Ricola alphorn, and has an extensive collection of wigs. While living in his dilapidated apartment, his tyrant-of-a-landlord (Peter Stormare) pays him a visit and then Lucas' character "accidentally" kills him. The rest of the movie follows...

The skin-crawling world of Small Apartments is presented without irony or judgment – so it’s not surprising that, in such an off-kilter environment, Matt Lucas’ Franklin Franklin (yes, that’s really his name) sounds relatively sane. Even when he’s off-handedly confessing to the murder of his landlord, Lucas’ delivery is so deadpan that no one takes him seriously – after all, why would Franklin kill anyone? Oh, possibly because (like everybody else in his crumbling apartment building) he’s totally deranged? Based on Chris Millis’ novel of the same name, Jonas Åkerlund’s film centers on Franklin’s life in the days following the death of his evil landlord (Peter Stormare). Franklin’s life is normally pretty weird, and having a dead body hanging out in his dingy apartment isn’t helping matters. His neighbors (including Johnny Knoxville, Rebel Wilson, Juno Temple, and James Caan – a supporting cast deserving of much better than this production) aren’t...

Austin - Brimming with loud idiosyncrasies and playing by its own structural rules, Jonas Åkerlund's Small Apartments might crumble if not cemented by a compellingly weird performance by Little Britain's Matt Lucas. A niche film by design, it's true enough to its own unsettlingly comic vision to win fans in a limited theatrical run. Lucas plays Franklin Franklin, a hairless, obese oddball who refuses to be seen without a wig but is strangely comfortable walking the streets pantsless. Franklin lives in squalor, surrounded by empty soda bottles in a decaying apartment complex where icky hermitude is a prerequisite: one neighbor (James

Swedish director Jonas Akerlund, best known for his innovative videos for the likes of Prodigy ("Smack My Bitch Up"), Lady Gaga ("Telephone" and "Paparazzi") and Madonna ("Ray of Light") came to SXSW for the world premiere his third feature "Small Apartments." In "Small Apartments," Los Angeles is a world full of bold colors and neons. And on its sexy outskirts lives Franklin Franklin ("Little Britain" actor Matt Lucas, best known in the states as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland"), a decidedly unsexy recluse who pines for his hospitalized brother (James Marsden) while he stays inside in his tightie wighties, blowing on his horn (just like the Ricola commercials) dreaming of a life in Sweden. Mostly due to his penchant for daily horn practice and his pervish spying, Franklin is despised by his neighbors (played by James Caan, Johnny Knoxville, and...

Matt Lucas has appeared in a significant state of undress throughout his career, from playing Kristen Wiig’s odd roommate in Bridesmaids to several characters on his hit BBC America sketch comedy show Little Britain. But for his first feature film leading role, in Jonas Åkerlund’s dark ensemble comedy Small Apartments – which premiered Saturday night at the SXSW film festival — Lucas was still quite not prepared for how much skin he’d be showing in the role. As the not-quite-all-there shut-in Franklin Franklin, Lucas is predominantly in just a large pair of tighty whities, a bad wig, and some clogs.

"Small Apartments" is pretty much what you would expect from a film starring bizarre British comedian Matt Lucas (Kristen Wiig's roommate in "Bridesmaids") and premiering at South by Southwest. From the looks of the exclusive clip, it's odd, incredibly random and hilarious.
In the film, Lucas plays Franklin Franklin, a man living in Los Angeles who kills his landlord played by Peter Stormare. If Franklin is going to get away with his murder, he's going to have to hide it from a group of eccentric neighbors, played by just about every actor working in Hollywood today. The supporting cast members includes James Marsden, James Caan, Johnny Knoxville, Billy Crystal, Juno Temple, Dolph Lundgren and DJ Qualls.

While Sundance still gets the headlines, the last few years have seen the film strand of South By Southwest, the Austin, Texas cultural conference, become just as vital to the movie world as Robert Redford's baby. The past few festivals alone witnessed some of the best movies of their respective years debut, from low-budget indies like "The Puffy Chair," "Beeswax," "Tiny Furniture" and "Cold Weather" to more mainstream fare like "I Love You Man," "Adventureland" and "Bridesmaids," to international genre hits like "Kill List," "Attack The Block" and "Monsters."

The insane buzz swirling around The Cabin in the Woods — along with the actual film’s general content — makes it the perfect title to open this year’s South by Southwest. And that’s what the people running the festival have figured, as a press release (via /Film) announces that the Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon horror deconstruction will start things off in Austin this March.
Along with some information on the film (which you’ve probably heard over and over at this point), said press release also told of premieres for Kevin Macdonald‘s newest documentary, Marley, as well as Lena Dunham‘s HBO pilot, Girls. But this is only the tip of the iceberg for a festival that presents bizarre, entertaining, sometimes offensive material with the ability to leave a lasting mark in their respective genres. I can’t wait to hear more about those offerings — but, in the meantime,...

Featuring Kristen Connolly, Fran Kranz, Anna Hutchison, Chris Hemsworth, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford, the film, promises the festival, "takes the horror genre, shakes it down, and smacks it upside the head."
The festival's also thrown six more titles into this first round, all of them world premieres. And they are, with descriptions from Team SXSW:
Kevin Macdonald's Marley. "The definitive documentary on the life, music, and legacy of Bob Marley."
Neil Berkeley's Beauty Is Embarrassing. "A funny, irreverent and insightful look into the life and times of one of America's most important artists, Wayne White."

The 2012 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival runs March 9–17, and they've just announced the world premiere of Lionsgate’s The Cabin in the Woods as the Opening Night Film. In addition to premiering the film, producer/co-writer Joss Whedon will participate in a key Conversation panel at the SXSW Film Conference on Saturday, March 10.
The Cabin in the Woods marks Emmy®-nominated writer Drew Goddard’s (Cloverfield, "Lost", "Alias") first foray into directing. This mind-blowing horror film starts, typically enough, as we join five young adults embarking on a weekend of debauchery at an abandoned cabin in the woods. But as layer after layer of the film’s truly kaleidoscopic world is revealed, everything we know about horror is deconstructed and everything we love is reconstructed before our eyes. The film stars Kristen Connolly, Fran Kranz, Anna Hutchison, Chris Hemsworth, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins, and Bradley Whitford and...

According to his Twitter that's exactly what the Swedish action legend is up to these days, having just started production on Jonas Åkerlund's Small Apartments, an independent comedy adapted from a novella by Chris Millis. No word on who Dolph is playing, but this is certainly an interesting, if not radical shift for the man who in recent years has had something of a renaissance with his directorial action efforts and a role in Sly Stallone's The Expendables. Small Apartments on the other hand appears to be an odd-ball, character-driven comedy based around an urbanite named Franklin Franklin who plays the alpine horn and dreams of the pastoral peace that is Switzerland. Franklin is being played by Little Britain's Matt Lucas, and the rest of...

Orlando Bloom continues his return to the screen after being absent for most of the past four years. He shot a role in Paul Ws Anderson's The Three Musketeers and will reprise his career-originating role of Legolas in The Hobbit. But before he gets back into breeches and latex ear appliances he'll play poet Robert Graves in The Laureate. The film is written and directed by William Nunez, and follows the life of Robert Graves, his wife Nancy Nicholson (Kerry Condon) and poet Laura Riding (Imogen Poots), specifically with respect to the open love triangle between them as they lived in London and Cairo. [Screen Daily [1]] After the break, Jonas Åkerlund makes Small Apartments and one more joins John Hillcoat's The Wettest County in the World. Jonas Åkerlund (Spun, The Horsemen) is moving into comedy -- well, intentional comedy -- with Matt Lucas (Little Britain, Alice in Wonderland) as his mouthpiece.

Ok, this is quite interesting news.
Matt Lucas, who you probably remember from Alice in Wonderland, will team-up with Horsemen director Jonas Akerlund for the upcoming comedy Small Apartments.
The whole thing is based on Chris Millis‘ book with the same title and it’s already being described as the dark and delightfully absurd novel.
Check out more about this “… capricious comedy of errors that resonates with tremulous energy and memorable characters.
Franklin Franklin is a fully realized and sympathetic protagonist in the vein of Ignatius Reilly (A Confederacy of Dunces), a simple man who yearns for “a land of pastoral serenity” devoid of the irritants of contemporary urban life.
An off-beat tale, Small Apartments is accented along the way by murder, strange fingernail collections, and the occasional blast from a treasured alphorn.”
Let’s also add that Millis’ novel Small Apartments is the winner of the 23rd International 3-Day...

British novelist and children’s book author Roald Dahl conceived Matilda Wormwood, James Henry Trotter, Mr. Fox, and, of course, Willy Wonka. Until now, the private man behind the iconic stories has largely remained an enigma. For his new book, Storyteller: The Authorized Biography of Roald Dahl (Simon & Schuster; September 14), Donald Sturrock was granted unprecedented access to Dahl’s mostly unpublished archives—hundreds of manuscripts and thousands of letters to friends and family, including his four children and first wife and actress Patricia Neal. In the excerpt below, Sturrock describes how he initially met Dahl in 1986 and eventually got to know the “old boy,” who thought biographies were boring and preferred invention to reality. Movie technology needed to catch up to the imagination of author Roald Dahl. By the time that occurred in the 1980s Dahl was in his final years and barely got to enjoy proper adaptations of his works. His imaginative fiction was incredibly vivid and picturesque while also having a dark undercurrent, an edge that set them apart from other children’s literature.
His widow, Liccy, finally allowed his 1961 novel, James and the Giant Peach, to be adapted by the team of producers Denise Di Novi and Tom Burton and director Henry Selick. They had previously proven their mettle as a team with the delightful A Nightmare Before Christmas and were seeking something else to do with their stop-motion wizardry. The results in 1996 were a stripped down adaptation, but one that Liccy and children around the world embraced.
Walt Disney Home Entertainment is finally releasing the movie on Blu-ray this Tuesday.
