Denis Villeneuve’s sweeping “Dune” and Disney’s Golden Globe-winning animated musical, “Encanto” each scored six nominations Tuesday to lead the 20th annual Ves Awards nominations (awards ceremony details are in pandemic flux). The Visual Effects Society unveiled nominations Tuesday for its 20th annual Ves Awards, with Warner Bros’ Dune and Disney’s animated Encanto leading all nominees with six apiece, followed by the Disney+ Marvel series Loki which has four noms to lead all broadcast series.
The group, celebrating its 25th anniversary, recognizes the year’s best in outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation across film, animation, television, commercials and video games. With the Omicron variant surging, the Ves Awards ceremony does not have a date or format yet; those decisions are still to be made and tickets are not yet up for sale.
Last year, the Ves Awards went virtual in a ceremony hosted as per usual by Patton Oswalt. Netflix’s The Midnight Sky, Disney/Pixar’s eventual Animated Feature Oscar winner Soul and Disney+’s The Mandalorian were among the marquee winners.

Warner Bros. has decided not to pursue a $100 million plan to build an aerial tramway from its Burbank studio lot to the iconic Hollywood sign atop Mount Lee.
The studio confirmed Thursday that the Hollywood Skyway project would no longer be pursued, primarily due to safety concerns as well as a number of logistical challenges.
“Warner Bros. has decided not to move forward with the Hollywood Skyway project. After exploring the challenging construction issues, required zoning changes and protocols necessary to protect guests during emergencies, we determined that our focus would be better placed on our core business interests. We know there are other solutions being explored to provide access to the iconic Hollywood sign and address neighborhood congestion. We look forward to seeing those come to fruition for the citizens of Los Angeles and the millions of tourists eager to visit the sign each year,” the studio said in a statement.

Nithya Raman, the former executive director of Time’s Up Entertainment, has been elected to the Los Angeles City Council. Her opponent for the District 4 seat, incumbent David Ryu, conceded the race today.
As of late Friday, Raman had 52.4% of the vote, beating Ryu by about 6,000 votes. “The voters of District Four have spoken, and I respect the outcome of this election,” Ryu said.
Raman, an urban planner and community advocate, worked for the City Administrative Officer of Los Angeles, where her focus was homelessness. That and climate change are at the top of her platform. She also said she wants to remove armed officers from situations in which they aren’t needed, while maintaining the ability to protect people against violence.

A Los Angeles City Council committee directed its staff report back on ways of encouraging — possibly through
citations or other enforcement — adherence to requirements that residents wear masks to prevent spread of the coronavirus.
During the council’s meeting on Friday, Councilman Paul Koretz said in his district, about half the people he sees walking in public are not wearing masks. This despite orders from both Mayor Eric Garcetti and Gov. Gavin Newsom. In June, Newsom issued an executive order requiring people to wear them at all times when outside the home.
“I truly can’t fathom the people who are politicizing mask wearing — literally for some people, a choice that will (mean) life and death,” Koretz said. “It seems like we should start to consider it reckless endangerment of others to not wear a mask.”

Three days after the beaches of intransigent cities such as Huntington Beach and Dana Point were reopened, there was a glimmer of hope for L.A. County residents, whose sand has been closed since March 27.
Asked at her daily Covid press conference about the possibility the beach ban could be lifted next Friday, Director of the County Department of Public Health Dr. Barbara Ferrer said,” We’re going to pay attention to how you all do this weekend.”
“If things go well,” the director ventured, “next week we’d like to come back with some additional lifting of restrictions.”
More specifically, Ferrer said, “We’re looking forward to hopefully getting there by next week.”
Many long-closed L.A. County hiking trails are being reopened on Saturday.
Ferrer reminded, however, there is a new normal: “You do need to stay six feet apart, and you do need to have a cloth face covering.

Nobody walks in La, the Missing Persons song said. Apparently they do, but now they all have to travel in the same direction. Complaints about the lack of social distancing around one of the most popular walking paths in Los Angeles has prompted city officials to institute new rules on which way you can walk.

The Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to limit which streets tour bus companies can use, after a flood of complaints from residents in hillside neighborhoods near the Hollywood sign and the Hollywood Reservoir.
The measure, which was approved without discussion, gives the city’s Department of Transportation the authority to crack down on the routes tour bus companies use as they shuttle tourists to and from Hollywood hotspots.
For years, residents in the Hollywood Hills have complained about gridlock, tour buses blocking driveways and other traffic-related problems, prompting city council members to finally take action.
Councilman David Ryu, whose district includes the Hollywood Hills, introduced the measure. Ryu said an Ladot study found 200 tour buses traveling along some narrow hillside streets in one six-hour period during the “off-season.”
“Tourism has an important role in our city and our local economy, but public safety must come first,” Ryu stated when he filed the motion.

Seeing the homes and stars in the Hollywood Hills may become more difficult for tourists if new rules are implemented by the Los Angeles City Council.
The council’s Transportation Committee has been studying ways to regulate the commercial vehicles, which some contend clog roads that are deemed unsafe.
Under proposed new rules created by the committee, tour buses and vans would be banned from driving through roads marked as unsafe by the Department of Transportation.
“My No. 1 goal is public safety for the neighborhoods and the residents who live in the hills, but also for the tourists and the passengers of these vans,” said Councilman David Ryu, who represents some hillside areas where tour vans frequently visit. “It’s really dangerous up there.”
Ryu introduced the rules to the council, and claims that he urged state lawmakers to allow municipalities to regulate the van industry, rather than making it a statewide issue.

Residents in the hilly neighborhoods surrounding the Hollywood sign have long complained about congestion, traffic and parking woes due to the famed attraction, and Warner Bros. would like to come to the rescue.
The studio is proposing to build an aerial tramway, dubbed the Hollywood Skyway, to take visitors to and from the Hollywood sign, the Los Angeles Times reports. It would run from a parking structure next to the studio’s Burbank lot, to the sign and back. A person close to the project tells The Times, the price tag would be about $100 million, which Warner Bros. would cover. The six-minute ride would travel more than a mile behind Mt. Lee to a new visitors center, and would include a viewing area.
The proposal would face a lengthy environmental review process.
The idea of an aerial tramway to the sign is not new, and has been floated numerous times over the years.

“War for the Planet of the Apes” from Weta Digital could well be on its way to the elusive VFX Oscar after winning four Ves trophies Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton (including the top feature prize). Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” won for supporting VFX, Pixar’s “Coco” earned four awards (including VFX for animation), and “Game of Thrones” took home five awards (including VFX for TV).
The “Apes” finale, directed by Matt Reeves, benefited from a Shakespearean performance from Andy Serkis as Caesar, with Weta working its wizardry in much harsher conditions for the performance-captured animation. Not surprisingly, “Apes” additionally won for Caesar, the effects simulations for the thrilling avalanche, and compositing. However, although both “Rise” and “Dawn” captured Ves prizes, neither won the Oscar, so “War” is not a certainty in its race with “Blade Runner 2049.”

A suspect has been arrested in the recent change of the iconic Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, People confirms.
Zachary Cole Fernandez, 30, voluntarily surrendered to L.A. police on Sunday night “with his attorneys by his side,” a police spokesman tells People.
Fernandez was arrested on one count of trespassing, a misdemeanor, the spokesman says. The investigation is ongoing and it is unclear if Fernandez is the only suspect in the sign’s modification, according to police, who previously said they had surveillance footage of the incident.
Fernandez and his ex-wife, Sarah Fern, previously told Vice that they were responsible.

Local news outlets reported that Bob Hope’s daughter, Linda, had obtained demolition permits for the property, which has been listed for years. Neighbors were concerned.
