In some totally tubular news, Variety reports that Mae Whitman has just joined the Valley Girl musical remake. Whitman will play a “punk rock lesbian” who is Randy’s (Josh Whitehouse, who succeeds Nicolas Cage) bandmate and best friend. Mary + Jane’s Jessica Rothe is in the role of Julie, who was played by Deborah Foreman in the original film. MGM’s backing the project, based on Martha Coolidge’s 1983 film, which will be directed by Rachel Lee Goldenberg from a script by Amy Talkington, with some doctoring from Martin Noxon. Matt Smith—the Maleficent executive producer, not the Doctor—is producing. The original soundtrack, which includes some Toni Basil, Sparks, and Bananarama, should afford the filmmakers plenty of opportunities to make this a bitchin’ musical adaptation.

One of these is a little spoiler-y, but there are five new character posters for Terminator: Genisys to mooch at here...
Word of warning: the third poster down looks spoiler-y to us. Although it's a spoiler that was revealed in the most recent trailer.
We're well into summer blockbuster season 2015 now, and one of the more expensive gambles of the next few months is the big budget restarting of the Terminator franchise.
Terminator: Genisys is being directed by Thor: The Dark World's Alan Taylor, and it stars Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Matt Smith, Byung hun-Lee and Jai Courtney. And some of those fine people are front and centre of the new bunch of character posters for the film, that have just been released.
What's surprising is how the promotion for the film seems to have given the game away a little with regards Jason Clarke's character,...

Nicolas Sparks heartthrob … Oscar-nominated character actor … the face that launched a thousand memes. Ryan Gosling can do it all — as long as it’s in front of the camera. Twenty-two years after his screen debut as a Mouseketeer, though, the “Hey Girl” guy is finally floundering in a role: as the new Nicolas Winding Refn, the Danish auteur who directed Gosling in the stylish but empty “Drive” and the stupid and execrable “Only God Forgives.” Gosling’s first turn behind the camera owes a mammoth debt to Refn (and a smaller one to David Lynch). Starring Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan,...

"We're here to stop the end of the world." If you've been waiting to see some more footage from Terminator: Genisys, our friends across the pond have you covered. A new extended TV spot from the United Kingdom has just surfaced with a whole bunch of new footage from the film, including our first look at J.K. Simmons in the film (sadly the scene in question doesn't look very good), and a glimpse at what appears to be a new Terminator model (perhaps that's who Matt Smith will be playing in the film). The Terminator films have never been deadly serious, but this one just feels far too campy and silly for my taste. Here's the new extended UK TV spot for Terminator: Genisys from Paramount UK: You can still watch the first full trailer for Terminator: Genisys right here. Terminator: Genisys is directed by Alan Taylor ("Game of Thrones,...

With a little over four months to go until Terminator: Genisys resets the beloved sci-fi franchise, star of the series Arnold Schwarznegger has confirmed what we suspected all along. The actor-politician, who rose to prominence playing the badass cyborg in James Cameron’s original Terminator, spoke out after a recent lecture in Europe to verify his appearance in the movie’s sequel.
“Yes, of course, next year,” he said, when asked by a reporter from fan site The Arnold Fans (via Coming Soon) if he would be a part of production on the sixth instalment. After the forthcoming fifth entry was confirmed for a summer 2015 opening, Paramount verified that two additional sequels had been pegged for release. The sixth – which we now know will commence production next year – is slated for a May 19th, 2017 release. The third film in the reboot trilogy is expected to arrive on June 29th,...

“New threat. New mission. New fate.” And also: new teaser trailer that will air on Super Bowl Sunday. There are many elements both fresh and familiar in the upcoming Terminator: Genisys, and the latest look at the film emphasizes the new twists on the classic film franchise by focusing on the silver-haired T-800 played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

If you weren’t at this year’s Montreal Comic-con, which was held from the 12th until the 14th of September at the Palais des Congres, then did you ever miss out. Although the Montreal convention isn’t normally known for its selection of guests, this year the con managed to not just pull in a few stars, but a few living legends too.
Gracing the city with his iconic presence was legendary film writer and director, George A. Romero. The man who invented zombies with his film Night Of The Living Dead (1968) not only came to Montreal, not only had his own Q&A panel with Ken Foree (known best for his work in Dawn Of The Dead, 1978), but had a booth where fans of his work could meet him one on one and speak with him. He was down to earth, quick as a whip, and a genuinely...

Boardwalk Empire begins in 1920. Its lead character, Nucky Thompson, is on top of the world. History is bending in his direction. He has established an elaborate criminal conspiracy that will funnel an addictive drug (alcohol) directly into the mouths of its consumers (most of America), all of it untaxed. What could go wrong?
Boardwalk Empire began in 2010. Its network, HBO, was on top of the world. It was coming off a decade which you could, with only a bit of hyperbole, referred to as the HBO decade. The Sopranos redefined what television could be; so did Sex and the City,...

Free Comic Book Day is upon us once again. What is Free Comic Book Day? Well it is all right there in the name. Every year, on the first Saturday of May, participating comic book stores give away selected comics to anyone that comes to their store. That’s right Free.
Comic books influence so much pop culture these days. Movies, TV, video games and more are looking for the next story to adapt or character to exploit. They make billions doing it. We enjoy consuming it. But the problem is, this doesn’t really help the men and women (mom & pop if you will) that run the local comic shop in your neighborhood. They struggle to get by. This is what makes Fcbd great, you get something for free and they get a chance to show you their wares. Maybe you will come back again. Everyone wins.
With that said,...

Conflict drives drama. Unpleasant people create conflict. Thus, cinema is crammed with huge, provocative arseholes/assholes (we went with the latter on the headline, but now we're in the article, we're going more arse than ass). There are obviously too many to list, but we've provided you with a thought-provoking array of multi-faceted bell-endery. That said, feel free to copy and paste the phrase, "Nice list, but you forgot x" to save time when placing comments below! The 'nice' bit is not compulsory.

Actors best known for their roles in TV and cinema are thrilling audiences and critics in plays full of violent, challenging action
The revered Kenneth Tynan, who reviewed theatre for the Observer in the 1950s and 1960s, said: "A good drama critic is one who perceives what is happening in the theatre of his time." All the same, it can be hard to spot a golden age when you are in the middle of it. It seems probable, though, that the London stage is enjoying at least a golden winter.
Four British actors, each of them a household name across the world, are delighting theatre audiences in leading roles in four plays that are not obvious crowd pleasers: Coriolanus, Richard II, Henry V and a new musical version of the Bret Easton Ellis novel American Psycho. Benedict Cumberbatch wins the Internet.
The "Star Trek" and "Sherlock" actor has already (rightly) claimed the title of Sexiest Male Movie Star. He's got legions of fans who call themselves "Cumberbitches." His name comes up in potential casting for pretty much every movie ever now. So, it's no surprise that his Reddit Ama (to promote his new movie, the Julian Assange pic "The Fifth Estate") left many other celebrity AMAs in the dust.
Here are seven of Cumberbatch's best answers:
1. He's part of a celebrity cheekbone club:

The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Starring: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Directed by: Christopher Nolan.
Available on Now TV.
The weird quick turnaround time-lapse between hyperbole and backlash that we have seen plague our blockbusters this summer can be traced back to this film. As a follow-up to The Dark Knight, it is a disappointment but it’s still a fitting finale and is definitely on a par with Batman Begins. A lot of the problems this film had on release have to do with it coming so soon after The Avengers. The Dark Knight Rises is epic filmmaking and has many breath-taking sequences in its own right; it just doesn’t have four superheroes fighting aliens. Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle...

Just one more day until we've got the full schedule for Comic-Con 2012 in our sweaty, nerdy little hands. The Saturday schedule was just released, and we're already mentally preparing ourselves for those long lines.

Well, this could change things. NBC has an internal investigation underway after it came to light that they edited the 911 call from George Zimmerman. The edit certainly changes the racial aspect, because Zimmerman didn't volunteer "He looks black." He was responding to the 911 operator asking "Ok, and this guy — is he black, white or Hispanic?"

When it was announced that there would indeed be a new Muppet movie, I had equal feelings of elation and dread. I grew up on The Muppets, be it reruns of The Muppet Show, their first three feature films – The Muppet Movie, The Great Muppet Caper, and The Muppets Take Manhattan – or any number of television projects, like A Muppet Family Christmas, or even Muppet Babies, which still seemed to keep much of the magic that made the group so darned lovable. After the death of creator Jim Henson, there were ups (A Muppet Christmas Carol) and downs (Muppets from Space, The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz ). So it’s not hard to understand why many of us fans were more than a little skeptical about a new feature film. That being said, I was glad to find that The Muppets not only met, but also exceeded any expectations I had.

It.s Christmastime again and we look forward to the visit of that magical figure bearing gifts. No, not the fat guy in the red suit, but the skinny one with the bow tie (which are cool) and police box. However, we all know that where the Doctor goes trouble follows. On Earth it is 1938 and Christmas, but in the atmosphere the Doctor (Matt Smith) is averting disaster by blowing up a spaceship. He dons an impact suit and plummets to the planet to be found by Madge Arwell (Claire Skinner) who helps him out of a bind. He promises to repay her one day. That day comes during World War II when Madge.s husband Reg (Alexander Armstrong)...

According to Matt Smith the actor is Doctor Who's 'sexiest companion ever' and now she is to play Jean Shrimpton. Here, she talks about her obsession with the 60s – and why she wishes she could make everyone fall in love
One freezing week in 1962, David Bailey took 18-year-old Jean Shrimpton and a sad-eyed teddy bear to Harlem, where he shot a Vogue fashion story that would change fashion photography for ever. The pictures still look modern: a glossy black-and-white spread of the Brooklyn Bridge, raw and stark and angry, with that innocuous yet sinister teddy bear underlining Shrimpton's innocence. That week, Bailey (an arrogant, married 23-year-old) and Shrimpton (a flighty Buckinghamshire farm girl) fell in love – this month BBC4 airs We'll Take Manhattan, the dramatisation of that affair. Karen Gillan, best known as Doctor Who's sidekick Amy Pond (Matt Smith pronounced her "the sexiest companion ever") plays "the...

It’s been confirmed that the awesomely named British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as the villain in the Star Trek sequel which begins filming this month. Scoring accolades for his turn as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective on the BBC’s Sherlock (its showrunner is Steven Moffat of Doctor Who fame, of course), the actor has also turned in high profile supporting roles in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and Tinker, Taylor, Soldier Spy. He’ll also portray Smaug the Dragon (through motion capture) and voice the Necromanncer in the upcoming The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again.
The question remains, who will he’ll play. When Benicio Del Toro dropped out last month, it had been more or less confirmed that Kahn would be the Big Bad. But was that true to begin with now? It’s also know that...

Helen Mirren has always been a trailblazer in the world of showbusiness. Now, she wants to blaze a trail through the galaxy itself.
The Oscar-winning actress and British treasure recently, who has played Cleopatra and both Queen Elizabeths, told the Daily Star that she has another iconic role in her sites: Doctor Who. The British sci-fi series, which has run since the 60s (with a break during the 90s), has always featured a man in the role of the planet-hopping, Tardis riding Doctor.
"I would like to play the new female Doctor Who. I don't want to just be his sidekick," she said. Currently, Matt Smith plays the role, but as was hinted in the episode "The Doctor's Wife," it is possible for a regeneration of the Time Lord to come back as a woman.
Mirren certainly has the chops. Beyond the obvious theatrical accomplishments, she's done plenty of action.

In what may be my new favorite thing, Venture Brothers has released their annual Christmas carol, which you can listen/download here. The song of the year is "Baby It's Cold Outside" as sung by the Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend, and it's just as twisted and Nsfw as you would imagine.
In Michigan, Republican Gov. Rick Snyder signed HB4770, which prohibits public employers from providing partner benefits to unmarried partners, effectively excluding gay partners from health care. Happy Holidays!
Betty White is set to host Monday Night Football for the Christmas edition this week. It seems only fair since a couple of years ago being tackled in a Snickers commercial took her career from steady to red hot.
Steve Jobs will be awarded a posthumous Grammy for "significant contributions to music." This amuses me since just a few years ago the industry was screaming that he was destroying the entire music industry.

As we’ve been telling you, whether or not you celebrate Christmas Eve, if you’re a fan of Doctor Who, nerds, and/or The Nerdist, BBC America has given you a reason to celebrate this Christmas Eve. For our viewing pleasure, they are airing Chris Hardwick (aka The Nerdist)-hosted Doctor Who: The Best of the Christmas Specials at 8/7c, followed by The Nerdist: Year in Review. You could spend a lifetime gazing at pictures of Douglas Booth, so the Observer fashion team cast him as Dorian Gray, the man who sold his soul to remain gorgeous. Is this 19-year-old actor the most beautiful boy in the world?
You're disgustingly good looking," I say. I can't help it. It's been on the tip of my tongue, like a complimentary ulcer, ever since I sat down opposite Douglas Booth, here, on a sofa, at a London hotel of his choice. He looks like naive art. He looks like an Elizabeth Peyton painting. I've actually interrupted him. He was in the middle of telling me about his worst nightmare – being leched at in a nightclub. "But you're ridiculously handsome. Look at you," I screech. Somebody looks up from their tea. Booth, to his credit, grimaces. Even with his mouth twisted, though, he looks beautiful. I grind my teeth to stop more praise falling out.

Kenneth Branagh is an international star of stage and screen who's as adept at performing Mamet or Stoppard on stage as he is at directing a summer blockbuster like "Thor." In "My Week with Marilyn," Branagh takes on the role of Sir Laurence Olivier, the legendary thespian who directed and starred in "The Prince and the Showgirl" with Marilyn Monroe. It's this production that's at the heart of "Marilyn," as the actress, played by Michelle Williams, struggles with the staid British set, the pressures of working with Olivier and her ongoing personal drama.
So, what's the Shakespeare-trained actor like in person? Branagh's as charming as one would hope, easily chatting about playing the legendary Olivier, the trials and tribulations of directing, and his lifelong love of "Dr. Who."
With you playing Olivier, there's a rabbit hole that you're falling into of the director and the actor who played Hamlet, and so on.
