Those teen drama TV series are not to be taken lightly. Because they could produce the most promising Oscar-nominated or winning actors. For example, consider Skins, created by Jamie Brittain and Bryan Elsley.
Every episode usually centers on a specific character or group of characters and the challenges they encounter in their daily lives. Themes of mental illness, dysfunctional families, bullying, and s*icide were also covered in greater detail. Not only did Skins receive positive reviews and good box office results, but it also gained a cult following. Of course, this is due to the stellar cast.
Dev Patel in Skins
Jordan Peele also agreed on this. Unbelievably, he has not watched Skins but he still gives the popular TV series credit for “producing” two of the best actors in contemporary film history—Dev Patel and Daniel Kaluuya.

Pay TV company Sky’s drama-documentary series “The Royal Mob,” directed by Fraser McDonald, is shooting in Lithuania. The show tells the saga of an extended royal family that once ruled large parts of Europe, and how their loves, marriages and feuds triggered World War I, Film New Europe reports.
It’s a story told through the eyes of British monarch Queen Victoria’s four favorite granddaughters, the Hesse sisters, each of whom married into one of Europe’s most powerful royal courts. “The series will combine premium scripted drama with a host of expert historians to tell the tale of one of the most compelling, powerful yet dysfunctional families in history,” Sky said in a statement when the show was announced in May.

Skins debuted on E4 10 years ago. We revisit a bold and unique adolescent drama that kick-started countless careers...
It’s been a decade since Skins, E4’s controversial teen drama, premiered. At the time, it was a source of anxiety for parents about what teenagers were getting up to when they weren’t looking, but for television executives it was pure gold. It achieved that rare feat - it got young people to watch and talk about it - and, after seven years of drinking, drugs and general debauchery, it bowed out in 2013.

Skins bows out on a brave, unflinching episode. Here's Caroline's review of Rise part 2...
This review contains spoilers.
We’ve reached the end, Skins fans, and it’s a safe bet that we won’t be returning following this brave and unflinching final episode. Whether it satisfies or appals will probably have something to do with your enjoyment of this seventh series in general, as this is very much an ending to Cook’s story, and not to the series as a whole. If we want cosy resolution then we need to go back to the series two, four and six finales, as adulthood has no room for such things. Skins Rise seems almost defiant in the ways it leaves us hanging, and a part of me wonders whether this story out of the three was the best to finish with.
But, then again,...

Jamie Brittain does it again. After the last time he wrote an episode featuring Cook (Series 4 Episode 7), there was some doubt in my mind about how well he’d pick up on the character and his story but here he has excelled himself with an episode that’s well-paced and exciting but also manages to have a lot of depth, along with a shockingly dark climax.
But as with basically everything, this episode’s not completely perfect. The first ten minutes are a little slow and the first of the episode’s two sex scenes feels a bit gratuitous and played for laughs, which feels somewhat at odds with the darker tone that builds up later on but those issues aren’t enough to negatively affect the whole episode.

It's been over three years since we last saw Cook - launching himself, a flurry of fists, at his best friend's killer - but given how this final series of Skins has been panning out, should we expect to find Jack O'Connell's teen tearaway now drained of his youthful vigour and punk-ish exuberance? Well… sort of.
With its sweeping shots of a buzzing Manchester and a moody voiceover, Rise is as far from traditional Skins as these final films have dared to stray. This first film boasts a dark atmosphere and pulsing electronic soundtrack - stylistically, early comparisons to Ryan Gosling flick Drive are not entirely unwarranted.

Skins returns for its farewell series with a brave, entertaining, and grown-up drama. Here's Caroline's review of Fire, part one...
This review contains spoilers.
I’m not sure what I was expecting going into this brand new incarnation of E4’s seminal drama Skins, made up of three mini-movies focusing on a favourite figure from the first four series, but the first thing I’ll say is that Skins Fire feels very much like it exists within the same universe. There were two ways this seventh series could have been horrible – one would be if the same manic sex and drug-taking was as prominent as it was in the preceding six, and the other would be if creators Bryan Elsley and Jamie Brittain had departed too far from what it was about the show fans loved in the first place.

As announced back in March, Skins is set to return for a final time next year, and E4 and Company Pictures today announced the details of the new series.
It will mark a departure in style and will see three former stars returning to the roles which shaped their careers in three individual stories, each one broadcast in two, one hour parts.
Written by series creators Bryan Elsley and Jamie Brittain with Jess Brittain, the stories go into new territory; more adult, more uncompromising. Each two part story centres on the characters now in their early twenties, the party's over and they're starting out as young adults, struggling to find a direction and a focus in unforgiving times.
Kaya Scodelario, the only cast member to appear in all previous six series of Skins, returns in Fire, written by Jess Brittain.
Effy has a dead end job as a receptionist for a leading London Hedge Fund.

The Us version of Skins was cancelled after one 10 episode season on MTV and now the UK original has been axed as well, after seven seasons.
According to The Guardian, Channel 4 has confirmed that the final season will air early next year in the UK. They promise "a celebration of this truly iconic series".
Created by father-and-son writers Bryan Elsley and Jamie Brittain, Skins follows the lives of teenagers in Bristol, South West England. It premiered in January 2007 on E4 and attracted 1.4 million viewers. At the time, that was the channel's second biggest audience (behind Big Brother) for a UK-originated show.

Skins will return for one final seventh series it has been announced by Channel 4.
The final series is to be broadcast in early 2013, with Channel 4 promising "a celebration of this truly iconic series".
Skins, created by father-and-son writers Bryan Elsley and Jamie Brittain and made by independent producer Company, was groundbreaking in its use of a team of young writers and a cast of actors often getting their first major TV break. The cast was also regularly changed from series to series.
The 6th series is currently showing on E4 on Monday nights.
Rumours are that a number of former cast members are being lined up to star in what is likely to be either five episodes or a trio of two-hour specials.

One thing I like to imagine is what it would be like if the Greek writers of yore found themselves penning TV shows for a modern, internet-savvy audience. During religious holidays and stuff, Greeks would sit through a trilogy of tragedies for a whole entire day, heroes getting maimed and stuffed into bathtubs, jealous girlfriends poisoning future fiances until they fell over dead, mothers stabbing sons, sons sleeping with mothers, gods smiting people willy-nilly just for giggles. I think of Aeschylus checking his @replies on Twitter, waiting for the internet to praise him for the brilliance of Oresteia only to be bombarded with angry, threatening tweets about, "Cassandra was my favorite, you loathsome cockroach!"
Stories work backwards a lot of times these days, TV writers starting with an ending that will make fans happy and backing into it from point C to point B to point A. But it hasn't always been like that.

MTV was sad to announce the cancellation of the highly anticipated and controversial teen soap "Skins" on Thursday (June 9). The decision came after the American version of the hugely popular U.K. show just didn't bring in enough viewers to green-light a second season.
" 'Skins' is a global television phenomenon that, unfortunately, didn't connect with a U.S. audience as much as we had hoped," the network said in a statement to MTV News. "We admire the work that the series' creator Bryan Elsley did in adapting the show for MTV, and appreciate the core audience that embraced it."

This time of year, we’re always a bit nervous as TV execs — who aren’t known for making wise programming choices — decide which shows [Chuck] will get [Chuck] another season [Chuck-Chuck-Chuck].
Chuck (Can you tell I'm a fan?)
TVLine.com kindly keeps a renewal scorecard for us, but we know enough to keep our hopes in check until we see the words “Officially renewed" by our favorites.
Some of the smartest shows avoid cancellation fears by planning their own demise. Lost is a good example: love the ending or hate it (or both), we were prepared for it.
The showrunners based the decision not on ratings, but on story. And that made viewers more confident that puzzling plotlines would indeed be resolved. Well, sort of.
FlavorWire celebrated such shows last week with its list of “10 TV Shows That Quit While They Were Ahead." While I question a couple of their choices, here are the highlights.

'Skins' co-creator Jamie Brittain has quit the show after ratings the fell by half. The future of the E4 drama is said to be in doubt now that the screenwriter - who in 2007 helped launched the controversial show which follows the trials and tribulations of different groups of adolescents - has stepped aside to make way for new talent. Confirming his departure, Jamie said: "I've just said everything I want to say. It's time for new writers to come forward and portray their truth about teenagers." Skins creator Bryan Elsley has responded to the controversy surrounding the drama, insisting the series "tells the truth" about teenagers' lives.
The American adaptation of the British TV show, which premiered in the U.S. last week, has been met with outrage from viewers and a parenting campaign group over its risque storylines involving sex and drugs.
Elsley, who wrote Skins with his young son Jamie Brittain, has defended the programme, describing it as an honest depiction of modern youth.
In a statement posted on MTV.com, he explains, "Skins is a very simple and in fact rather old fashioned television series. It's about the lives and loves of teenagers, how they get through high school, how they deal with their friends, and also how they circumnavigate some of the complications of sex, relationships, educations, parents, drugs and alcohol.
"The show is written from the perspective of teenagers, reflects their world view, and this has caused a degree of controversy both in the U.K. and the U.S.A... It tries to tell the truth. Sometimes that truth can be a little painful to adults and parents."
Elsley's statement comes as a string of major corporations, including Subway and Taco Bell, pulled their promotion from Skins' ad breaks.

In 2007, Bryan Elsley — working alongside his son, Jamie Brittain — created "Skins," a drama that took British television by storm, thanks in no small part to its whip-smart writing, gritty feel and willingness to go there, unflinchingly covering topics like sex, sexual identity, substance abuse and mental health issues. In short, it was the kind of television that resonated with teens and critics alike, raising controversy along the way.
In the years since its initial premiere, "Skins" gained a cult audience here in the U.S., where the British version also ran on BBC America, and in August 2009, it was announced that Elsley would be partnering with MTV to create a Stateside version of the show. And on January 17, "Skins" finally premiered ... to record-setting numbers, and a new round of controversy and critics.

The youngest actor on the MTV version of Skins is a scant 15 years old, prompting network execs to voice concerns about adhering to child pornography laws in production. Based on the original BBC series (and created by the same father-and-son team, Jamie Brittain and Bryan Elsley), Skins focuses on a bunch of mostly middle-class British teens as they navigate the world of suburban sex, drugs, eating disorders, violence, parties, sex, school and sex, and also sex, with varying degrees of success.

Since Tony was the leader of the pack, Sid Jenkins (Mike Bailey) would have been designated as the group's heart. From a glance, you wouldn't expect Tony and Sid to be the best of friends, but the duo are thick as thieves… to an extent. The opposite of Tony's intemperate behavior, Sid was the 'nice guy' who had a tendency to fall into a series of unfortunate events on a regular basis. This could've been attributed to Sid's submissive nature, which affected his self-esteem severely, especially in confrontations.
During the first series of Skins, Sid considered Tony his idol, despite being manipulated by him on numerous occasions, especially when it came to Michelle, who Sid is madly in love with. However, unbeknownst to Sid though, another girl was waiting in the wings for his affection. That girl, Cassie, would eventually deliver the confidence Sid so desperately needed, even if it...

After weeks of promising and hinting and teasing and Tweeting, Skins UK has finally unveiled the character names and bios for the forthcoming fifth series, and, my, what an intriguing gender bender they have displayed in Franky Fitzgerald! I'm just going to take a shot in the dark here and say Franky is exactly who Jamie Brittain was talking about when he told me: "One of the characters in the next generation is very much in the tradition of Skins portrayal of sexuality, but you won't quite know what or who she is for quite a while."
Actually, I know exactly who she is: Little panserbjørne-riding Lyra Belacqua from The Golden Compass, for starters.
But seriously, though, let's just break this down, shall we? Franky's relationship status? "N/A." Franky's religious views? "Joan of Arc was cool." Is it safe to pair that with the suit and hair and call her queer?...

U.S.' take on popular British TV series "Skins" is ready to launch with the release of a trailer on top of the January 2011 premiere. The trailer is sort of a shot-by-shot remake of the original pilot where Nicholas Hoult's Tony wakes up in the morning and starts making calls to his friends in preparation of a huge party.
In the MTV version, relatively new and young actors are cast. In Hoult's shoes as Tony is James Newman, red-haired Michelle is portrayed by Rachel Thevenard while Tony's best friend Sid is played by Daniel Flaherty but under the name Stanley. One distinctive difference between the original and the adaptation is they pick lesbians instead of gays.

Just a quick reminder that Season Three of British drama import Skins kicks off tonight at 9 pm Et/Pt on BBC America. Featuring an entirely new cast (save Kaya Scodelario's Effy Stonem), Skins's third season is the perfect jumping-on point for new viewers, though regular viewers of the rowdy teen series might miss Sid, Cassie, Tony, Jal, and the rest of the original gang. Chicago – Things are a little light in the world of the DVD Round-Up, HollywoodChicago.com’s popular feature that grabs titles that may have fallen through the cracks while you were busy refreshing your Netflix queue to see if “The Reader,” “Frost/Nixon,” and “The Wrestler” are going to ever be shipped your way.
This week’s Round-Up may be missing an Oscar winner like Kate Winslet, but there’s some definite quality here including a buzzed indie horror film, a beloved BBC hit, and one of the best shows on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Do your part and pick up one of these at least for rent. Broaden your horizons.
“Skins: Volume Two” was released on April 14th, 2009.
“Squidbillies: Volume Two” and “The Burrowers” were released on April 21st, 2009.
