Mark Morton, the guitarist who co-founded the heavy-metal group Lamb of God three decades ago, will release a memoir this summer that looks back on the triumphs and tragedies of his life so far.
In the book Desolation: A Heavy Metal Memoir, which will come out June 25, the musician reflects on how he felt like he had to push forward with the band even after the death of his newborn daughter in 2009. That event and the perpetual motion of band life led him to addiction. His story, which he co-wrote with author Ben Opipari,...

Mastodon gave a devastating performance of "Show Yourself" on Jimmy Kimmel Live Monday. Drummer Brann Dailor and bassist Troy Sanders delivered a thunderous dual vocal performance over Brent Hinds' searing guitar solo.
"Show Yourself" appears on Mastodon's new LP, Emperor of Sand, a concept record that explores life, death, time, illness and doom through the story of a man who is handed a death sentence from a desert ruler and then wanders an arid wasteland.
However, "Show Yourself" has served as a respite of sorts from the album's heavy and personal subject matter.

When actors decide to play music in film, if they want to do it right, they have to learn the instrument they're playing, which can be a daunting task in a short amount of time. Christian Bale learned how to play drums for "The Big Short," by hiring an instructor and listing to nothing but Pantera and Mastodon for two weeks (badass). We'll see what lengths Dakota Johnson and Matthias Schoenaerts will go to get it right for "The Sound Of Metal." Read More: New Trailer For 'A Bigger Splash' With Matthias Schoenaerts And Dakota Johnson The pair will star in the movie that marks the directorial debut Darius Maruder, the screenwriter behind Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond The Pines." The story sees Johnson and Schoenaerts playing in a band together, as a singer and drummer respectively, and they face a challenge when the dude behind the...

Mastodon has shown two very different sides with the two song releases thus far for forthcoming album "Once More 'Round the Sun." There's the more melodic, mass consumer bent on "High Road," and then there's today's "Chimes at Midnight." The latter chomps a bit deeper, hits a bit heavier, and is representative of how fans may see this album meander more than their used to. This is not a bad thing. The most progressive sounds from the metal band have been exorcised on "Crack the Skye," their more bounding, commercial licks like on the "Jonah Hex" soundtrack and on 2011's "The Hunter." After a couple listens to "Once More..." there is just an expanse that even veers into (dare I say it?) glam. All the while, Brent Hinds' voice is in snarling, excellent form and drummer Brann Dailor is still a godd*mned monster. Veteran producer Nick Raskulinecz -- yup,...

Fans of Disney•Pixar’s feature films love to scour the screen in search of the Hidden Gems the filmmakers sneak into each film: Wall•E’s explorations uncover a Mike Wazowski antenna ball, paying homage to Monsters, Inc., and in Up, the classic Luxo Jr. ball can be seen in the girl’s bedroom as Carl Fredricksen’s house flies by her window.
Disney•Pixar’s Monsters University features a few such gems, three of which are revealed here:
A113 – The School of Scaring classroom number is A113, which refers to the former classroom of John Lasseter, Brad Bird, Pete Docter and Andrew Stanton at CalArts. The number makes an appearance in every Pixar feature film.

1.) John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman both seem pretty sure a sequel to Wreck-it Ralph will be made in talking to Moviehole about the subject. In fact, director Rich Moore is so confident Disney will want a sequel that he's already discussing adding a huge star to the cast. "We'll really come up with something good for Mario to do in the next film," Moore said, noting that the only reason he wasn't in the first film was because he couldn't fit him into the story, not because Nintendo refused him. 2.) While I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea of remaking a 17-year-old movie everyone has seen on cable multiple times over the years, Columbia is moving full-speed ahead with its remake of Jumanji. Zach Helm (Stranger than Fiction) has been hired to write the script for the project, which Sony has described as "an update for the present,...

While it seems that Pixar’s unimpeachable run ended with 2011’s “Cars 2,” we’re remaining cautiously optimistic about the studio’s first foray into prequel territory with “Monsters University.” Despite hitting theaters in a little over six months, some details have leaked that are sure to make metal fans excited about the return to Sulley and Mike Wazowski. Metal band Mastodon posted on their Facebook page yesterday that they were contributing a song for the new film. Unfortunately, the post has since been pulled down, but Metal Injection (via Slashfilm) was able to get a screen grab. Guess they let the cat out of the bag a little too early. Although the intersection between Pixar and Mastodon may seem weird at first, it wouldn’t mark the first time the band has provided music for a film. They previously contributed music to both the “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” movie and the best-forgotten “Jonah Hex.

Now is the perfect time for Mastodon’s “The Hunter” arrival. This month has been a running log of grunge and ‘90s rock revisits, in addition to the speculation that the Lou Reed and Metallica collaboration album will equal a worst-case scenario. Plus, somehow, Mastodon has spent the last three records as the metal band added to the playlists of people who don’t typically listen to metal. The Atlanta-based foursome got a bump, in part, from scoring their first film, 2010’s “Jonah Hex,” and spent the last several years touring with more general rock groups like Cursive, Against Me! and Soundgarden as...

Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock has been busy in the studio working on his group’s latest album – with Outkast’s Big Boi producing some tracks – but the enigmatic singer has just tacked another project on to his to-do list: scoring a film.
Brock has signed on to provide the audio accompaniment to a western comedy film (don’t see those very often) called Queens of Country. The movie is to be directed by Ryan Page and Christopher Pomerenke – the same fellas who brought us Blood Into Wine, a wine documentary starring Tool’s Maynard James Keenan. Rather appropriate since the singer is set to appear in the film as the antagonist – a bigger role than the cameos he’s used to.
Meanwhile, the lead actors are Ron Livingston, Sex and the City’s Jack Berger and star of the cult classic Office Space, and Lizzy Caplan of my favorite canceled show,...

I guess the most surprising thing is that it's taken so long to happen. I'm talking, of course, about the recent surge of board game-inspired films getting set into motion. Deadline's Mike Fleming reports Sony Pictures is the latest studio to make a move (see what I did there?), hiring John Hlavin (Underworld: New Dawn, "The Shield") to write a contemporary global action thriller based on "Risk."
Even though a live-action Candy Land movie is currently in the works and attempts at a Ridley Scott-helmed Monopoly and a Gore Verbinski-directed Clue have been discussed and seemingly abandoned, it's probably safe to say next summer's Battleship will determine the future of the genre. The Universal Pictures production has a strong director in Peter Berg (Hancock, Friday Night Lights), the son of a naval historian who is said to be very passionate about the project, and a wildly random cast...

Trent Reznor offered a cryptic response to EW’s Music Mix earlier this week on whether or not he was scoring David Fincher‘s remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Now, confirmation has arrived in an online interview with Jon Pareles of The New York Times that Reznor is indeed writing, performing, and recording the score to Fincher’s film adaptation to the late Stieg Larsson’s novel. Reznor revealed that he has been working on the film for about six weeks now, and said to expect something different from the score he composed for The Social Network. While the previous Atticus Ross-assisted score used mostly electronic equipment, music for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is being performed with cellos and other stringed instruments. Last year was a great year for movie scores, with more musicians stepping in to compose music for film. The Social Network...

This brief holiday week is about to come to a close. MTV News wishes you the best over the long holiday weekend, where hopefully you'll eat plenty of festive food, see "True Grit" repeatedly (because it's that good) and generally enjoying the final moments of the year that was. The MTV Newsroom Blog will be back on Monday (December 27), but until then, enjoy all the biggest moments from this week's posts, including nuggets about Paramore, U2, "Jersey Shore" and Keri Hilson.
» It was something of a tumultuous week for a lot of people, beginning with Paramore, who lost two members and are figure out how to move forward.
» There was chaos elsewhere in the music world, as the troubled "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" encountered another injury and more delays. This is a much bigger U2-related mess than the PopMart tour.
» It wasn't all bad news, as "The Sing-Off" crowned a champion.

At some point over the past 20 years, movie soundtracks went from being well-curated mixtapes that served as companion pieces to the actual films in question to a simple conglomeration of throwaway hit singles and up-and-coming artists that labels are desperate to promote. So when a great movie soundtrack comes along, it feels extra special when compared to the developments of recent history. The MTV Newsroom Blog takes movie soundtracks very seriously, which is why we've been keeping close tabs on the developments in the soundtrack universe over the past 12 months. And while 2010 wasn't as great as, say, 1999 (the year that the accompanying albums to "Fight Club," "The Matrix," "Go" and "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut" all delivered exceptional results), there were still some excellent soundtracks this year. In no particular order, here are the five best movie soundtracks of 2010.

French robot disco duo score soundtrack to Tron: Legacy (plus a cameo), as pop artists start to take top billing from actors
At the end of the trailer to forthcoming movie Somewhere, we are given just two pieces of information: 1) that the film was written and directed by Sofia Coppola; 2) that it features music by Phoenix. A soundtrack being billed above the star is, it's fair to say, unusual. And the fact that Thomas Mars, singer with the French group, is married to Coppola and is the father of her two daughters, has less to do with it than you'd think.
Movie soundtracks, even scores, lovingly crafted by stars of rock and pop, are all the rage right now. That other prominent French outfit, Daft Punk, also hit the big screen this month, having provided the music for green screen extravaganza Tron: Legacy. Not only do the world's greatest exponents...

Jonah Hex may have been widely slated, but James found himself enjoying it. Are film critics, James wonders, just too harsh and cynical these days?
Once upon a time in the West (if Louisiana qualifies as the West), good men, bad men and very ugly men trembled anxiously as a nation headed into its centenary under the looming clouds of a great menace.
That menace - a 'terrorista' according to the Mexicans - had weapons of mass destruction, a touch of sophisticated thespian camp and hordes of unquestioning henchmen hellbent on destroying America. The man's name: Malkovich.
Actually, his name was Quentin Turnbull but he's played by John "Malkovich!" Malkovich and, unfortunately, every time I see him the first thing to come into my head is "Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich".
President Grant calls upon scarred and haunted bounty hunter Jonah Hex to deal with the man who wants to mark the...

When Sully suddenly “goes native,” he locks horns with the company CEO (Giovanni Ribisi) and his gung-ho commanding officer (Stephen Lang, in a wonderful, scenery-chewing turn from a long-underrated actor). Thought of by many scholars and film buffs as a “game-changer” as much as the first Star Wars film was—and they may be right. While Cameron’s politically-correct...

Metal band Mastodon are hitting studio and working on the soundtrack for upcoming movie "Jonah Hex", according to Ain't It Cool News. On how the song will sound, the online publication was told by a source that it is "needless to say, pretty heavy!"
Mastodon indeed are known for their heavy rock tracks. They have scored music for 2007 flick "Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters". They have also contributed their songs to such popular video games as "Saints Row" and "Guitar Hero" franchises.
The band's drummer Brann Dailor also revealed their latest studio album "Crack the Skye" will be adapted into a film. "[We] wrote out a screenplay that reads from song to song. We didn't storyboard it, but we wrote a screenplay," so Brann said, adding that the band have met with a filmmaker to discuss about the big screen project.

Note: This trailer contains use of profanity. The home of [adult swim], lots of rappers, and /Film's Russ Fischer, Atlanta is also the beloved homebase for many a young and crazy rock band. In recent years, hard-living and hard-playing acts like The Black Lips, Deerhunter, The Coathangers, and Mastodon have arrived in pop-culture as uncompromising torchbearers for Atlanta's music scene. We Fun Atlanta, a 75-minute documentary currently on the festival circuit, aspires to capture the close-knit vagabond relationships, psychedelic punk-blues, and well-publicized antics of these acts and local personalities. Word on the film is good, and the trailer hints at a film more concerned with truth and fun than the self-mythologizing lip-service of many rock docs. Any doc featuring King Khan and the Shrines warrants my attention, and I currently plan on arranging a screening of We Fun in my city next month. If you're interested in scheduling a viewing party, ...
