Yes, there are 10 now, with the latest one introducing the Young Ip Man, in a desperate effort to continue the franchise. Despite its evident downward spiral, though, the Ip Man series has presented a number of martial arts masterpieces through the years, which highlighted the prowess of individuals like Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung, Wilson Yip and Yuen Woo Ping among others. Also of interest was the path Wong Kar Wai and Herman Yau took the life of Bruce Lee’s teacher, resulting in more artistic entries, while the inclusion of individuals like Mike Tyson, can only be perceived as a treat.
Here is a look of all the entries in the series, in chronological order.
1. Ip Man (2008) by Wilson Yip

Despite the changes in some key roles in the film, with Yuen Woo-ping taking the place of Sammo Hung as action choreographer, Max Zhang the place of the local rival, and Mike Tyson that of the foreign rival, “Ip Man 3” essentially repeats the recipe of the previous film almost to the letter, with one exception, of adding more drama.

Hey everybody, its Britain’s sweetheart Orlando Bloom… You remember Orlando Bloom, the bow and arrow fella from The Lord of the Rings or the lovable simpleton boxer from The Calcium Kid. No?. I’m just Kidding! I know we all know who Orlando Bloom is but I can assure you we have not seen him like this before.
An ultra badass..!
That’s right Orlando Bloom has completely reinvented himself as a punchy, kicky, ready for business, bonafide action star! Sure we have seen him firing arrows or swinging swords but The Shanghai Job sees him swinging fists and sweeping legs in director Charles Martin’s (Skins, Marcella) debut feature, set in the stunning locales of Shanghai.

Ip Man 2, from Cine Asia, is a semi-biographical martial arts film loosely based on the life of Wing Chun grandmaster, Ip Man. The film was directed by Wilson Yip and Sammo Hung, produced by Raymond Wong, written by Edmond Wong, and stars martial arts legend, Donnie Yen, who reprises the leading role.
This sequel continues on from events in the first Ip Man film, and covers Ip Man’s life in Hong Kong, which was at the time under British colonial rule, and recovering from the Japanese invasion of China. Ip Man’s main hurdles are his reduced circumstances, British oppression, and rivalry from other martial arts practitioners, including the local Hung Ga master Hung Chun-nam, as played by Sammo Hung.

Many big screen biographies are often accused of taking…liberties…with the facts, often to help the finished film’s pacing. After all, unless it’s a TV mini-series, it’s difficult to compress a remarkable life into an evening at the movies. Film makers will frequently switch the order of events along with the popular practice of using composite characters (a little bit of this fella’, and a bit of this old pal, and…), even inventing supporting roles, or tagging real folks with invented names. And then there are fantasy tales using a real person (and elements of his life) as the story’s heroic center. In Hollywood famous true Western outlaws like Billy the Kid and Jesse James were the leads in many fictional flicks (hey, those two “met” Dracula and Frankenstein’s daughter!). Those on the opposite side of the law like Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson...

Picking up the 3D glasses and walking into the cinema about to watch Ip man 3 on the big screen felt amazing. The cinema was packed, i placed myself on the second row and began the journey through Ip mans life for one last time, the final installment.

The movie starts off with the introduction of Bruce Lee, played by (Danny Chan), here we get to see Ip man put Bruce through some movements and we get to see the first section of Ip man in 3D. In this scene the 3D is fine, it’s not amazing but it works well as Bruce showcases his moves in slow motion with kicks slicing through water in mid-air. Danny only really resembles Bruce Lee with a few mannerisms, but was nice to see Ip man and Bruce Lee on the...

As we start counting down to the release of the third Ip Man film starring Donnie Yen as the Wing Chun grandmaster, a new behind-the-scenes video has been released. In the scene, Ip Man takes on a Muay Thai fighter in an elevator while trying to protect his wife (played by model and actress Lynn Hung) at the same time. It was the first time Hung has filmed a fight scene and she almost got hit in the face. "That was such a frightening experience! In such a narrow space, I was too scared to move surrounded by intense exchange of punches from Donnie and the Muay Thai master. Their moves were so fast that I couldn't even react, and I was so scared when his fist...

Fact: I wouldn’t give a damn about this movie if Donnie Yen weren’t all over it. The guy has charisma to spare, and while it’s good to see him doing something that doesn’t require him to pummel human beings for two straight hours, I’m still not too sure about this one. I understand that the “All’s Well, End’s Well” franchise is a staple of Chinese New Year cinema, but even I have my limits when it comes to schmaltzy goofiness. You’ll see what I mean in just a second. Assuming, of course, that you’re brave enough to stuff this trailer into the oh-so tender folds of your brain. Chan Hing-ka and Janet Chun’s “All’s Well, End’s Well” stars Louis Koo, Sandra Ng, Donnie Yen, Bak-Ming Wong, Kelly Chen, Chapman To, Lynn Hung, Mi Yang, and Ni Yang. All's Well Ends Well 2012 is due to be released in Hong Kong and China just before Chinese New Year. I’m assuming that this Chinese New Year flick is the equivalent of, say, “Valentine’s Day” and “New Year’s Eve” here in the States. Why else would Donnie Yen and his equally impressive cast mates find themselves in something as ridiculously cheesy as “All’s Well, End’s Well 2012″? There’s a lot of color, music, and goofy tomfoolery taking place in the embedded trailer, which, from what I’ve been told, is what people should expect from the seventh installment of the “All’s Well, End’s Well” series. The damned thing looks beyond silly, and given my love of all things Donnie Yen, there’s a very severe possibility that I’ll give it a shot when and if this things ever arrives on an English-subtitled DVD. Until then, this teaser and these images will have to keep me company. “All’s Well, End’s Well 2012″, which stars Louis Koo,...

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
African Cats – Samuel L. Jackson (Narration)
Deep Gold – Bebe Pham, Jaymee Ong, Michael Gleissner
Madea’s Big Happy Family – Tyler Perry, Loretta Devine, Bow Wow
Water for Elephants – Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz

Water for Elephants
The Stars: Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz
The Plot: A veterinary student (Pattinson) abandons his studies after his parents are killed and joins a traveling circus as their vet.
The Buzz: This period piece looks to be a well put together romantic drama. I enjoyed Pattinson’s general vibe in the trailer; thankfully a far cry from his brooding ham-bake of the Twilight films. Witherspoon is winsome, I typically love her in her more dramatic pieces — aside from the laborious Vanity Fair. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of on-screen magic this pair can conjure up. Happy to see Christolph Waltz again,...

The second installment in the Ip Man series is, for want of a better word: refreshing. Picking up where the original left off, the sequel capitalizes upon the strengths of its predecessor. Wilson Yip’s return to the franchise feels strangely familiar, yet he succeeds in delivering another round of fantastic set pieces showcasing artful martial arts, complemented by rich supporting characters, served neatly with a slice of history. An impressive sequel to rival the original, evidently cut from the same cloth but all the stronger for it.
Ip Man 2 chronicles the grandmaster’s migration and initial struggles in Hong Kong during the early 1950s. Donnie Yen returns in the titular role, again striking a superb balance between a measured acting performance and breakneck Wing Chun artistry.
Much of the original cast has returned to reprise their roles. Lynn Hung continues her portrayal of Cheung Wing-Sing, Ip Man’s now pregnant wife.

This month has been one of the best that I can remember for trailers. All the studios were desperate for their trailer to get released before the Christmas holidays and we were inundated with posts. Since I love trailers so much, the inundation was most welcome. In what I am considering making a monthly post, here’s a roundup of all the trailers so far for December which I have embedded below for your viewing pleasure!
I’ve embedded them in the order in which they were released start December 1st to 31st and if I miss any, please let me know and I’ll update the post.
I really want this to be intereactive so make sure you tell us which trailers you liked the best and which you think will be great or terrible movies from what you’ve seen! So, let’s go!

[Our thanks to Liz Reed from MangaLife.com for this review, which has a slightly different perspective, since Liz hasn't seen the sequel's inspiration -- yet.]
Ip Man 2 is not about ass-kicking Sifu (Master) Ip Man showing Westerners who's boss. It's not even about proving oneself in the face of adversity. At the core, the film advocates spirit, self-cultivation, and foremost, respect among people of all races and backgrounds. But don't let that scare you away--while the message seems preachy, the visually stunning fight sequences, paired with witty characters and relatable relationships, will have you at the edge of your seat, believing every word and teaching Master Ip has to offer.
The film is a self-described "semi-autobiographical martial arts film" about legendary Master Ip Man (Donnie Yen), who taught Wing Chun martial arts to the infamous movie hero Bruce Lee. The sequel picks up where its predecessor left off: Ip's escape from Foshan and the Second Sino-Japanese War and move to Hong Kong, where he hopes to start his own Wing Chun school. Now settled with his pregnant wife and son,...

The ability to appreciate Donnie Yen punching people really, really fast in the face is what makes life worth living, if you ask me. Yen does just that in “Ip Man 2″, which co-stars Sammo Hung, who also acts as the film’s action choreographer. New shiny poster for the film due out later this month in Hong Kong below. A sequel to the successful “Ip Man” starring Donnie Yen, “Ip Man 2″ follows Ip Man (Yen) as he immigrates to Hong Kong in 1949 after the struggles against the Japanese in the first film. In Hong Kong, Ip Man attempts to propagate his discipline of Wing Chun martial arts to the world, but is hampered by jealous martial arts rivals and the oppressive British. Starring Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung Kam-Bo, Darren Shahlavi, Siu-Wong Fan, Lynn Hung, Ka Tung Lam, Xiaoming Huang, Kent Cheng, Yu-Hang To , Amber Chia, Stefan Morawietz, and directed by Wilson Yip.

Can’t get enough Donnie Yen punching people really, really fast in the face? You’re in luck. There are two behind-the-scenes “production diaries” on Yen’s upcoming “Ip Man 2″ (via Kung Fu Cinema) to dig your teeth into. The martial arts film will co-star Sammo Hung, who also does double duty as action choreographer. From the looks of these two diaries, they should probably give Hung a co-director’s credit, since he probably does just as much work directing the thing as credited director Wilson Yip. Starring Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung Kam-Bo, Darren Shahlavi, Siu-Wong Fan, Lynn Hung, Ka Tung Lam, Xiaoming Huang, Kent Cheng, Yu-Hang To , Amber Chia, Stefan Morawietz, and directed by Wilson Yip. Ip Man punches away in the Summer. Get more images and videos at our “Ip Man 2″ preview page.

Maggie Cheung alert!
She walked the Taiwanese red carpet today in this white number to your left. She was presenting Best Picture at the Golden Horse Awards. The Golden Horse is Taiwanese in origin but it's for Chinese language films regardless of country of origin so it's very competitive now. Warlords and Lust, Caution, which both had international releases, were recent winners of Best Picture.
This year, Maggie handed the trophy to No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti which, if we ever see it in the States, might be called I Can't Live Without You or Not Without You. That's Taiwan's submission for this year's Foreign Language Film Oscar race. The film is from actor/director Leon Dai and it's about a poor man who loses his daughter once the government learns of their illegal living conditions.

The very reverential and patriotic Ip Man, Wilson Yip’s biopic about the titular martial arts master best known for having Bruce Lee as his most famous disciple, is a pleasing throwback to classic kung-fu films which features an engaging lead performance by Donnie Yen as Ip Man. The first film in a projected trilogy on Ip Man’s life, Ip Man begins in 1935 in Foshan, a city in China’s Guangdong province renowned for its superior brand of martial arts. Ip, revered by all the masters of the martial arts schools in Foshan as the foremost practitioner of the Wing Chun fighting style, does not run a school or take on students. However, Ip’s spacious mansion has become a de facto university training course for those who want to test their skills against the master. One of these is Liao (Chen Zhihui), a local martial arts schoolmaster, who...
