Nicolas Cage just might be the most terrifying serial killer onscreen…if he really is the murderer.
Cage stars in and produces “Longlegs,” the latest horror film from writer/director Oz Perkins who previously helmed “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” (2015), “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House” (2016), and “Greta and Hansel” (2020).
Perkins, the son of “Psycho” star Anthony Perkins, is officially credited as Osgood Perkins for “Longlegs.” The film is produced by Cage’s Saturn Pictures, Range, Traffic, Oddfellows, and C2 Motion Picture Group. Actress
The feature centers on a series of occult murders that are connected to an FBI detective’s (Maika Monroe) past. A cold case is reawakened; Cage, Blair Underwood, and Alicia Witt co-star in the film.

The 2024 Sundance Film Festival kicked off this past weekend with a fresh batch of independent films with some new faces and names. A Real Pain however had a very familiar face, one who has been gracing the Sundance screens for nearly 20 years.
Jesse Eisenberg returns with his second feature, after his first, When You Finish Saving the World, also premiered at the Sundance Film Festival just a few years ago.
A Real Pain is an incredible improvement for the Social Network & The Squid and the Whale actor who’s more known for his stuttering, awkward demeanour than his writing and directing. That just might change, especially after the film was acquired for $10 million by Searchlight on Sunday.
A Real Pain is a hilarious buddy comedy about a very unfunny scenario. Eisenberg plays David Kaplan, who begins the film rushing to the airport while frantically calling his cousin hoping he won’t be late.

Sundance film festival: The pair play to expected types in an endearing yet often forced film about cousins visiting Poland to pay respects to their grandmother
Over a nearly two-decade acting career, Jesse Eisenberg has established an energy so distinct you could describe the characters and the movies around them by his name – wordy, wry, brimming with nerves and discomfort. He can deliver a scathing deadpan, as in The Social Network, or a rapid-fire spit of anxieties, most recently in Fleishman Is in Trouble. He’s a natural fit for a certain type of small-stakes, character-driven indie dramedy, as was his first feature as a writer-director, last year’s When You Finish Saving the World, about fractured, lonely, sardonic family of three; its humorous, wincing journey of social awkwardness, as the New Yorker bluntly put it, “very Jesse Eisenberg”.

‘A Real Pain’ Review: Kieran Culkin Is Superb In Jesse Eisenberg’s Funny & Moving Dramedy [Sundance]
Park City – There are multiple meanings to the title of Jesse Eisenberg’s latest directorial effort, “A Real Pain.” There is the pain that cousins Benji Kaplan (Eisenberg) and David Kaplan (Kieran Culkin) are experiencing over the passing of their beloved grandmother, and there is the pain Benji is feeling over a horrifying incident in his cousin’s life. The most pressing example, however, is in David’s soul.

With his debut feature “When You Finish Saving The World,” Jesse Eisenberg proved surprisingly deft in his handling of interpersonal drama between family members at odds. His follow-up, “A Real Pain,” sees him wearing multiple hats, as he directs himself in the role of the socially anxious but professionally put-together David Kaplan. On its surface, it’s hardly a departure from Eisenberg’s other roles. But through David’s relationship with his moody and energetic cousin Benjamin, or “Benji” (Kieran Culkin), the actor-writer-director unfurls a number of intricate personal and social dynamics that turn the lens not only on the deep insecurity underlying the average Eisenberg character, but Eisenberg’s own piercing guilt as an American Jew with European roots — who comes from a place of unimaginable trauma, but frets over the small things.

There’s nothing as sweet as discovering the inner cults behind modern America. Or so it seems to acclaimed cinematographer Sean Price Williams, who makes his directorial debut with twisted coming-of-age dramedy “The Sweet East” that stars a who’s who of millennial–Gen Z talent.
Written by Nick Pinkerton, “The Sweet East” follows a high school senior Lillian (Talia Ryder) who hails from South Carolina and gets her first glimpse of the wider world on a class trip to Washington, D.C. Separated from her schoolmates, she embarks on a fractured road trip in search of America. Along the way, she falls in with a variety of strange factions, each living out their own alternative realities in our present day.
Jacob Elordi, Jeremy O. Harris, Ayo Edebiri, Simon Rex, Early Cave, Rish Shah, and Gibby Haynes also star as the outrageous characters Lillian meets along the way home.

Ever get that feeling that something's creeping up right behind you? Eh, don't worry about it, I'm sure it's nothing. Nothing, that is, except the news that one of the freakiest horror movies ever made is about to get a long-awaited sequel.
Back in 2015, writer/director David Robert Mitchell unleashed the tense and quietly terrifying "It Follows" upon unsuspecting viewers. Critics hailed it as an instant classic while audiences ate it up and asked for seconds, helping the very responsibly-budgeted horror flick make more than 20 times its cost during its theatrical run. It was, by all reasonable metrics, an unmitigated success and the unofficial beginning of star Maika Monroe's ascension to genuine scream queen territory. Now, almost a decade later, indie-friendly studio Neon is throwing their distribution and production muscle behind a sequel, titled "They Follow."

David Robert Mitchell is finally making his long-awaited followup to horror hit It Follows. Mitchell is reteaming with star Maika Monroe on They Follow, with Tom Quinn’s Neon introducing the package to buyers at AFM this week.
They Follow will once again star Monroe as Jay Height, whom audiences met in the 2014 film as a young woman who, after having sex with her boyfriend for the first time, learns she will now be hunted by a mysterious entity. The only way to temporarily stave off death is to pass on the curse to someone else, who will become next on the list followed by the entity.
The film grossed $21.9 million globally on a budget of around $1 million. Over the years, talent behind It Follows has discussed a sequel, with Neon’s Quinn suggesting in 2015 it could involve people turning the tables on the entity and following it to its source.

Bleecker Street has nabbed North American rights to first-time feature director Andrew Cumming’s Stone Age-set horror thriller The Origin.
The film from Sony Pictures’ Stage 6 had its world premiere at the 2022 BFI London Film Festival and was nominated for five British Independent Film Awards, winning one in the best breakthrough performance category for Safia Oakley-Green (Sherwood, Extraordinary). The script was written by Ruth Greenberg (Run), with Escape Plan Productions’ Oliver Kassman (Saint Maud) producing.
Bleecker Street is planning a fall/winter theatrical release, it unveiled on Tuesday as the Cannes Film Festival market was set to open.
Set more than 45,000 years in the past, the movie tells the story of a gang of early humans who band together in search of a new land. “When they suspect a malevolent, mystical, being is hunting them down, the clan is forced to confront a horrifying danger they never imagined,” according to a plot description.

“Kicks,” an indie film directed by Justin Tipping about a teen who sets out to get back Air Jordans that were stolen from him, received positive reviews after premiering at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. The film currently has a 78 percent fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, but on IMDb it has a score of 4.7 out of 10, based on 1,143 votes.
A new Wired article, titled “IMDb Voters Are Tanking Indies Before They’re Even Released,” investigates why indie films such as “Kicks” have been receiving a slew of negative reviews days before their opening night.
“The bulk of these scores came from voters who provided the site with no biographical data, making them essentially anonymous—and, to the filmmakers, very suspect,” wrote Brian Raftery of Wired.
“Not to be conspiracy theorists,” added “Kicks” producer David Kaplan. “But when you see something like this, you want to know what’s going on.

"It Follows" isn't the highest-grossing horror film of the year. That would be "Insidious Chapter 3," which, with a studio-level budget of $10 million, has grossed nearly $121 million to date. But a quick peek at Rotten Tomatoes reveals the difference between the two. While "Insidious 3" is "certified rotten" with an average of 59% positive reviews, "It Follows" stands tall at 96%. Unlike "Insidious," which came and went as most horror films do, David Robert Mitchell's "It Follows" pierced the cultural conversation. It was different — smart, stylish, scary — and with a killer soundtrack. It got people talking, and the money followed. How did a small indie genre film break the horror franchise mold? At Ifp Film Week, the co-founders of Animal Kingdom, Joshua Astrachan and David Kaplan, sat down with former RADiUS-twc CEO Tom Quinn to tell the story. Indiewire's Eric Kohn moderated...

Nick Shumaker stated matter-of-factly in the American Producers panel at the American Pavilion in Cannes – “Any film between $3.5 million and $5 million is a dangerous region from an investment perspective.”
The acquisitions manager at Paris-based sales agency Memento Films referred to the difficulties investors face in trying to recoup costs with smaller overall production budgets.
“In the Us, the majority of films at $4-5 million dollars have a long shot at making money back. This is because of the way the domestic market is working these days – it’s also the way the international numbers are coming in. You need a Nicolas Cage or a Matthew McConaughey,” he continued.
New York-based David Kaplan of finance/ production company Animal Kingdom, agreed with Shumaker - but gave examples such as European co-productions and soft money structures that better allow these reduced budgets to work.
