"I think we're lucky to have him still with us..." 1091 Pics has debuted a new official trailer for an adventure sports documentary titled The Longest Wave, which originally premiered in 2019 at the Doc NYC Film Festival. And it also played at last year's Cinequest Film Festival. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Joe Berlinger travels the globe with legendary windsurfer and pioneering waterman Robby Naish as he figures out what to accomplish next in his life. The film also focuses on the usual adventure life challenges including getting older, injuries, family, and the risks of continuing to participate in considerably dangerous sports. The doc features Robby Naish, Kai Lenny, Laird Hamilton, and Gerry Lopez, among others. This seems like a nice companion to the other recent surfing doc Arc of Aleutia, or the classic The Endless Summer where they also seek the longest wave. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for ...

Jaden Smith swims and lazes on the beach in the new video for “Photograph.”
Shot in New Providence, Bahamas, and directed by Smith himself, the video features scenes of Smith staring at the pink sunset, closing his eyes on a float, swimming through the current, and lying facedown in the sand. He floats down to the ocean floor fully clothed, clutching a Polaroid. “Thought I might write a song,” he sings. “Hoped you might sing along.”
Last fall, Smith released “I’m Ready,” featured on the PlayStation video game Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

“The Endless Summer” movie filmmaker Bruce Brown, through his Bruce Brown Films, LLC, has sued Nike and Footlocker for trademark infringement after the sports company allegedly used the title in a promotional campaign.
In the lawsuit, obtained by TheWrap, Brown says he is the legal and beneficial owner of multiple federal trademark registrations for the brand name “Endless Summer” and “The Endless Summer,” as well as the Endless Summer design mark. As such, the brand has been authorized for various goods and services for 35 years where Brown has licensed the rights for the trademark title and film poster. “Consumers associate the Film Poster with the Endless Summer Brand and film,” the lawsuit read.
The lawsuit alleges that Champs and Nike infringed on the trademarked name when they launched a marketing campaign in May of 2019 using the words “Endless Summer” and “distinctive and recognizable elements of the Film Poster.” Footlocker sold...

For the next several weeks, John Legend’s favorite snack is likely to be a bag of Lay’s Potato Chips.
Viewers of NBC’s “The Voice” will see the famous musician in an assortment of videos telling them about a range of new flavors for the snack that range from cheddar jalapeno, sea salt and vinegar Poppable and “flamin’ hot” Kettle Cooked to the return of varieties such as fried green tomato for a limited run. “Some people think of me as serious all the time,” says Legend, in a brief interview, but they will see a different side of him in the videos. “A lot of our fans are young, and I think this will be fun and exciting to them.”
In a different era, a big brand like Lay’s might spray commercials all over TV to get the word out about a bevy of new tastes.

Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” has tied “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” with 10 Oscar nominations, the most ever for a non-English language contender. This comes on the heels of wins from the New York and Los Angeles critics’ groups, along with multiple guild nominations, and a best director Golden Globes award. What once looked like a streaming-service outlier is now a serious, if not leading, contender to win the industry’s top award.
In the nine-decade history of the Academy, no foreign-language film has ever won. Nine foreign-language films received five or more nominations among all categories (some — but not all — included Foreign Language Film). Of these, perhaps two — “Z” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” — had a legitimate shot at winning Best Picture.
The ascension of “Roma” isn’t certain. It’s receiving limited theatrical play, and is streaming worldwide on Netflix — although that’s something that didn’t dissuade the Academy in its nominations.

Damn! Rappers G-Eazy and Machine Gun Kelly are beefing right right now over pop star Halsey — and things just took a nasty turn. Earlier this week, Mgk went live on Hot 97 with Funkmaster Flex and performed a freestyle where he dissed G-Eazy and claimed that he hooked up with his girlfriend Halsey and just hours later, G-Eazy completely bodied Mgk with a diss track — and he even threatened Mgk. Mgk was the one to take the first jab, and he hit way below the belt with his verse about the "Bad at Love" singer. "Let's just keep it G / Only Eazy I f--k with is E / I see he dyed his hair and got a hanging earring / I f--ked his girl now he look like me / This s--t overbearing," Mgk rapped in his freestyle. What a night... let’s just keep it G. Soundcloud now.

“Breath” is a wistful and wounded coming-of-age story about surfing, surrender, and the sordid experience of losing your virginity to a married older woman who’s got a thing for erotic asphyxiation. The movie is able to ride a line right through so many of its genre’s worst clichés because it never stops negotiating between fear and desire, risk and reward. It’s an assured directorial debut from “The Mentalist” actor Simon Baker, who — after 12 long years — has finally done something more impressive than getting Anne Hathaway those “Harry Potter” manuscripts in “The Devil Wears Prada.”
“Breath” doesn’t spend that much time on the water, but it reckons with each wave — from ankle-busters to groundswells — and every single one of them dares these young protagonists to prove something to themselves. Without belaboring the point, or betraying the soft touch of the Tom Winton novel on which his film is based,...

For those of you not familiar with documentary filmmaker Bruce Brown, he is the man who brought us the legendary surfing film The Endless Summer (1966) and it's sequel The Endless Summer 2 (1994). He made a few other documentaries as well, like On Any Sunday (1971), which was nominated for an Oscar. I loved those movies and I'm sad to report that Bruce Brown passed away this past Sunday. He was 80-years-old. These are his best known films and just a small part of the legacy that he left behind. According to his official website he died of natural causes.

The general manager of Brown's film company Alex Mecl says Brown died Sunday in Santa Barbara, California, of natural causes.

Things around The A.V. Club’s TV show are heating up in all sorts of ways. We’re based in Chicago, land of unchanging cold. So when it gets warm here, people become nearly manic with joy. I am relieved that it’s cold-drink season because a couple of weeks ago, Neil DeGrasse Tyson was given my coffee mug as a going-away gift (something I am quite proud of), so even if I wanted hot drinks, I would have to drink them out of my bare hands.

The ’80s singer — who had smash hits such as “Should’ve Known Better,” “Endless Summer Nights” and “Right Here Waiting” — restrained a violent passenger on a Korean Air flight Tuesday when the man started attacking fellow passengers and crew members. “On our flight from Hanoi to Seoul a guy sitting in the next row from us got crazy & started attacking the flight attendants & passengers,” Marx’s wife, Daisy Fuentes, wrote on Twitter. Well, another year spent in the company of classic cinema curated by the TCM Classic Film Festival has come and gone, leaving me with several great experiences watching favorite films and ones I’d never before seen, some already cherished memories, and the usual weary bag of bones for a body in the aftermath. (I usually come down with something when I decompress post-festival and get back to the working week, and this year has been no exception.) There have now been seven TCMFFs since its inaugural run in 2010. I’ve been lucky enough to attend them all, and this time around I saw more movies than I ever have before—18 features zipping from auditorium to queue and back to auditorium like a gerbil in a tube maze. In order to make sure I got in to see everything I wanted to see, I had to make sure I was...

I live in Los Angeles, and my residency here means that a lot of great film programming-- revival screenings, advance looks at upcoming releases and vital, fascinating glimpses at unheralded, unexpected cinema from around the world—is available to me on a week-by-week basis. But I’ve never been to Cannes. Toronto, Tribeca, New York, Venice, Berlin, Sundance, SXSW, these festivals are all events that I have yet to be lucky enough to attend, and I can reasonably expect that it’s probably going to stay that way for the foreseeable future. I never attended a film festival of any kind until I made my way to the outskirts of the Mojave Desert for the Lone Pine Film Festival in 2006, which was its own kind of grand adventure, even if it wasn’t exactly one for bumping shoulders with critics, stars and fanatics on the French Riviera.
But since 2010 there...

"The Endless Summer" boasts one of the most iconic movie posters in cinematic history, which is why producers are so pissed off at a lipstick company they say flagrantly ripped them off. Producers are suing Lipstick Queen, claiming the company's "Endless Summer" lipstick line shamelessly copied off the colorful poster. There are lots of gripes. Producers are indignant the gloss bares the name of the movie, but if that's not enough the individual lipstick names...

Kendall Jenner got quite a compliment from Orlando Bloom on Thursday night. The 19-year-old Keeping Up With the Kardashians star and her mother, Kris Jenner, 59, met the 38-year-old actor at the Amazon Prime Endless Summer screening and party, hosted by David Foster's daughters, Erin Foster, 32, and Sara Foster, 34. The party took place at the Terrace at the Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood. Kendall, sporting a beige oversized sweater and denim shorts, and Kris, who wore a black crop top and matching jacket and pants, joined David, 65, at a table by the pool, E! News has learned exclusively. Bloom later arrived with an assistant and several other people and was also seen with a...

The pair mingled with Erin and Sara Foster – the daughters of Grammy-winning composer David Foster and former stepsisters of Brody Jenner, 31, (Caitlyn Jenner's son with actress Linda Thompson, 65).

Escobar: Paradise Lost is a fine thriller that cannot live up to its title’s pretensions. Both parts before and after the colon promise a dramatic heft the film does not quite achieve. It is neither a probing, complex character study of Colombia’s most notorious drug kingpin nor is it a rich drama of sordid themes that its Milton-alluding subtitle suggests. Instead, the debut from Italian actor Andrea Di Stefano is an exciting cat-and-mouse thriller between a monstrous villain and his niece’s aloof, Canadian husband, the man who gets caught up in a whirlwind of Colombian corruption.
The young man on the run is Nick Brady (Josh Hutcherson), a Canadian surfer who we first see with his older brother (Brady Corbet) on the idyllic Colombian coastline. Boarding and working at equal measure, Nick finds his deepest salvation in the form of Maria (Claudia Traisac), a beautiful native who quickly falls for him.

The mainstream drew me back in a little this year, though mostly by looking back several decades to the same things I love and incorporating them into music that doesn't especially sound like 2014.
1. Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra: Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light on Everything (Constellation)
I think of Silver Mt. Zion as the post-rock Pogues. They have the drunken singing and the scratchy fiddling and the punky energy, but in a sort of gritty yet sophisticated Godspeed! You Black Emperor musical context (and in fact founder/singer/guitarist Efrim Manuel Menuck used to be in Godspeed!). On their eighth album, the added intensity that appeared on their previous album is increased; this may be their best yet. My favorite track is "What We Loved Was Not Enough," where at first it seems like he's singing "The days come when we no longer fail," but then when...

Whether you want to immerse yourself in the world of birds, bees, baseball or backup singers, Netflix has a documentary for you. Missed "Man on Wire"? It's on there.
Here are films that changed the world, righted wrongs, pinpointed a moment in history, or simply shone a light on a previously unknown subset of society. (Availability subject to change. Films are unrated, except as noted.)
1. "20 Feet from Stardom" (2013) PG-13
This Oscar-winning doc shines a spotlight on the relatively unknown backup singers behind such superstars as Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Mick Jagger, and Stevie Wonder.
2. "The Act of Killing" (2012)
The director invited killers -- men who took part in the horrific purge that left more than 500,000 dead in Indonesia in the 1960s -- to reenact their crimes on film, resulting in a bizarre look inside the mind of men capable of mass murder.
3. "The Battered Bastards of Baseball" (2014)

Courtney Love and Lana Del Rey: a match made in heaven? The '90s grunge queen and somber alt-pop sensation will hit the road together beginning in May as part of Del Rey's "Endless Summer Tour," the singers announced Monday. Love will appear during the first half of the North American run, which kicks off May 7 in The Woodlands, Texas. Love previously teased a collaboration between the two on Twitter, stating: "See you in London in ten hours @LanaDelRey we are going to own that town xxc #excitingnews2come." It's an interesting collaboration, not least because Del Rey raised the ire of Frances Bean Cobain - Love's daughter with late grunge superstar Kurt Cobain - over comments she made in a recent Guardian interview that seemed to glorify early death. The rock progeny responded by tweeting (among other things): “@Lana Del Rey the death of young musicians isn’t something to romanticize…...

Five years after director Bruce Brown made the seminal surfing movie “The Endless Summer,” he made what many considered the definitive motorcycle movie “On Any Sunday” (1971), which included some of the world’s leading bike-race enthusiasts, including movie star Steve McQueen (whose jump over Nazi barbed wire in “The Great Escape” had been feeding adolescent fantasies since the Kennedy administration). Thirty-three years later, Dana Brown -- who helped his father turn out “Endless Summer II” in 1994 -- has directed “On Any Sunday: The Next Chapter” which includes some of the more hair-raising riders in the motocross world and some of their more spine-tingling stunts. (The film is currently in limited release.) “‘On Any Sunday’ was the film I saw when I was 11 or 12, and made me want to become a filmmaker,” Dana Brown said in New York this week. “I thought it was amazing. And then I had this apprenticeship...

On Any Sunday: The Next Chapter, a new motorcycle documentary, will be released by Red Bull Media House in association with Freeride Entertainment in theaters nationwide on Nov. 7. Directed by Dana Brown (Step Into Liquid), the film is a follow-up to the 1971 Academy Award-nominated documentary On Any Sunday, directed by his father, Bruce Brown, who also directed the classic surfing documentary The Endless Summer. The 90-minute documentary film features MotoGP riders Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa, action sports superstar Travis Pastrana, freestyle motocross pioneer Robbie Maddison, Pikes Peak International Hill Climb motorcycle champ Carlin Dunne,

It’s been a loooooonnnnng goodbye to summer.
I keep thinking of that iconic poster for “The Endless Summer” and boy, it sure does feel endless.
It’s the middle of September and we’re experiencing… no, we’re enduring, the hottest week of the year in Los Angeles. It was 107 degrees on Tuesday!!!!
I am ready to say goodbye to all my summer clothes -- the shorts, the tank tops, the dresses. I even thought I would be putting this summer’s favorite pair of Instagram-worthy sandals on hiatus by now. But no, I’ve worn them three times this week. ...

This week, Christie’s, the world’s largest fine arts auction house, is hosting an inaugural online-only sale of what are billed as Vintage Film Posters, though it is an eclectic collection of old and new. There are plenty of familiar faces, like Reynold Brown’s Attack of the 50Ft. Woman, Saul Bass’s The Man With the Golden Arm, Giorgio Olivetti’s La Dolce Vita, Bob Peak’s My Fair Lady, and Philip Castle’s Clockwork Orange, but what is interesting in terms of the auction market is the inclusion of a number of recent Mondo posters by Tyler Stout, Todd Slater and Laurent Durieux. The auction also includes La Boca’s already-classic, four-year-old set of silkscreen teasers for Black Swan.
The poster that really caught my eye, however, and one I’d never seen before, is this stunning Deco design by one Ram Richman for Jean Grémillon’s...

Long before live sports coverage and countless reality shows saturated every corner of the television market, Bruce Brown's pioneering motorcycle racing documentary On Any Sunday blazed a trail across movie screens back in 1971. Brown, who had made his name with the equally stunning surfing doc The Endless Summer, captured a wonderful variety of motorcycle racers and fans, including actor Steve McQueen, competing fiercely (and treated like every other rider) at the height of his stardom. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature. Now, 43 years later, Brown's son Dana Brown has made a follow-up documentary, On Any Sunday: The Next Chapter. As might be expected, the younger Brown follows in his father's footsteps by focusing on racing, but he...
