Irwin Winkler has been producing films for parts of six decades. His latest is “The Irishman,” which reunites him with frequent collaborators Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro as well as Al Pacino (“Revolution”). Ellen Pompeo is among the many celebrities standing with Gabrielle Union.
A recent report in Variety shed light on the America's Got Talent judge losing her post on the NBC competition series after speaking out against alleged racism on the show's set.
Pompeo took to Twitter to blast the network for the controversial decision.
"It's unfortunate that @nbc the same network that protected disgusting men like Matt Lauer and punished women for speaking out or not putting up with it... has not changed their practices or culture," the Grey's Anatomy lead tweeted, clearly referencing the Today host's firing for alleged sexual misconduct.
"I support @itsgabrielleu commitment to speaking up to injustice. It takes courage."

When it comes to Hollywood, there is a lot to give thanks for in 2019. From baby Yoda to Marvel and various aspects of “Succession,” here’s what the Variety staff is thankful for this year.
When it seems so hard to get an honest answer out of anyone in Hollywood, I’m thankful for Werner Herzog and his brutal candidness. It takes a lot for someone to admit they have never seen a Jon Favreau movie despite working with him, they watch “WrestleMania” to keep up with society, and they cried at the first sight of Baby Yoda. — Will Thorne, TV writer
I am thankful that “Succession” has given me a chance to ship and lust over Roman Roy and Gerri. — Meg Zukin, social media editor
There can never be enough said for how important it is to see one’s self represented on-screen and in the media in general.

“God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunya,” a satirical drama by Macedonian director Teona Strugar Mitevska, has won the inaugural Arab Critics’ Award for European Films. The film, which positions itself as “a feminist cry against a patriarchal Macedonia in the grips of bullying machismo and hidebound religion,” according to its review in Variety, was selected by 42 Arab film critics from 24 nominations submitted by national film institutions from across Europe.
European Film Promotion, an agency that boosts the global profile of European cinema, and the Arab Cinema Center revealed the winner on Saturday at the Cairo Intl. Film Festival.
The aim of the award is to promote European cinema in the Arab world, and raise the interest of Middle Eastern distributors and other industry players in European films, as well as putting a spotlight on the work of film critics from Arab countries in bridging cultural differences and introducing audiences to new forms of cinema.

The members of Depeche Mode take a backseat in Anton Corbijn’s new concert film, “Depeche Mode: Spirits in the Forest.” Instead, the director shifts the spotlight to six fans, whose personal stories are woven throughout footage from the final night of band’s Global Spirit Tour in Berlin. Originally, the Dutch director simply wanted to create a document of his stage design for the tour, but the band felt that there needed to be a more impactful reason for the film and took inspiration from Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker 1989 endeavor on the group, “101.”
“I don’t like to watch concert films, myself,” Corbijn tells Variety. “[This] was initially very narcissistic for me. But it ended up being a great way to do it.”
The six fans, who come from all over the world — including Los Angeles, Romania and Mongolia —were selected from a massive pool of possible subjects.

Frank Cicha, head of programming for Fox Television Stations, saw the future coming nearly a decade ago when Fox’s TV station group committed many millions to land syndication rights to “The Big Bang Theory” back in 2010.
Even then, it was clear that big hits on the scale of “Big Bang” were going to be few and far between. Cicha could sense that local TV stations would be outbid in a big way by cable networks for top primetime series. His theory was only reinforced a few years later when Netflix and other streaming platforms started vying for hot off-network properties.
On the latest episode of Variety podcast “Strictly Business,” Cicha outlines the strategy that Fox Television Stations has pursued in recent years to increase the volume of original daytime programming developed for the station group. “Parasite” is a global hit and an Oscar contender, which means many audiences will be seeing actor Song Kang Ho for the first time. But in fact, he’s had a terrific career in Korean films for more than 20 years.
Song was first mentioned in Variety on Nov. 23, 1998, in a review of the film “The Quiet Family.” Asked if he remembers the review, he says, “Of course I was aware of Variety at the time, because Variety is a famous magazine. I don’t remember the review, but it’s positive, so thank you!
“In the beginning, I read every single review. I was affected by each one, whether praise or criticism. As time has passed, I don’t think reviews are so important.”
Neon’s “Parasite” marks the actor’s fourth film with writer-director Bong Joon Ho. “When making it, I had the feeling it was special. The structure is unique,...

“What?! My god.”
This is Randy Newman’s reaction upon learning of the first time he ever appeared in the pages of Variety, back in May of 1965. That was three years before he released his first album as a singer-songwriter, at which point he began steadily accruing fans of his warped musical character sketches until he became a full-on cult sensation in the 1970s. And it was well before he really broke through as a film composer with 1981’s “Ragtime,” going on to rack up 20 Oscar nominations – and two wins – for both score and original song.
But in 1965, he was just another struggling L.A. musician – albeit one whose uncles, Alfred Newman and Lionel Newman, were Hollywood music royalty – writing songs and taking odd jobs composing music for TV. Epic Records liked his output of surf-rock instrumentals for the ABC soap “Peyton Place” – credited to the Randy Newman Orchestra – enough to release it on vinyl,...

Frequent collaborators David Wain and A.D. Miles are teaming up to develop a daily sitcom for WarnerMedia, Variety has learned.
The project, titled “Today’s Special,” has been given a pilot order plus a four episode commitment, given that the show will be shot and aired daily should it go to series. Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

In a March 6, 1973, review of Blood, Sweat & Tears at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, Variety briefly praised the opening act: Bruce Springsteen was “a young man with a hot guitar from Asbury Park, N.J.” If you substitute the word “ageless” for “young” — the Boss turned 70 on Sept. 23 — the description still fits.
Springsteen’s first mention in Variety occurred when reviewer Fred Kirby caught a 65-minute set at Kenny’s Castaways in New York and accurately predicted, “Bruce Springsteen, 22, appears ready to make his impact.” Just three years later, Variety noted that the singer-songwriter “hits it big with front covers this week on both Time and Newsweek. It’s the first time in recent memory that a pop artist has been doubly front-paged.” Springsteen’s documentary “Western Stars” debuted Sept. 12 at the Toronto Film Festival, and Warner Bros. opens it wide Oct. 25.

The rapper's forthcoming album Jesus Is King was supposed to drop on Friday, Sept. 27, however, Variety is now reporting that sources close to the situation say that's not looking very likely. The album was initially announced in late August of this year thanks to a tweet from the musician's doting wife, Kim Kardashian. Kim tweeted a pic of the album title, release date, track list, and captioned the pic with a simple praying hands emoji. If the album isn't happening, then Kim sure doesn't know it yet. Early on Wednesday the Keeping Up...

After six seasons and a historic Emmy win under its belt, “How To Get Away With Murder” will be signing off of ABC.
The Shondaland drama is one of only three left on the broadcaster, and one that has left an indelible mark not only on that network’s schedule but also on the landscape of television in general. Showrun by Pete Nowalk, the series often wrapped deep discussions on tough topics such as addiction, adoption, abuse, an HIV diagnosis and criminal justice reform with more salacious plots about murdered husbands, mysterious new students and complicated romantic relationships.
“I still believe, and I will say this until I go to my grave, that Annalise Keating [and] Olivia Pope are the greatest characters on TV,” series star Viola Davis, who became the first African American woman to win the lead drama actress Emmy for her performance as lawyer and professor Annalise Keating in 2015, tells Variety.

There’s a good reason why the upcoming movie “Hustlers” may remind audiences of a Martin Scorsese film.
The stripper crime drama, based on a true story and written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, stars Jennifer Lopez as Ramona, a New York City stripper who takes a newbie (Constance Wu) under her wing. But when business slows down during the financial crisis of the late 2000s, Ramona masterminds a scheme to scam Wall Street suits out of their money.
“When I first read it, I was like, ‘This is a lot like ‘Goodfellas,’ because those guys are doing things that are objectively bad, but for some reason you like them,” Wu, whose character Destiny turns to stripping to help support her grandmother, said during an appearance on this week’s episode of the Big Ticket, Variety and iHeart’s movie podcast.
She adds, “But I will say, there’s one big difference.

Even though we’ve got less than two years to go before The Batman storms cinemas, nobody can help pondering what lies beyond that. After all, we’re discussing a character that’s endured for eighty years in multiple forms of media and shows no signs of slowing down. And when it comes to the movie side of things, he’s been recast, sequelized and rebooted numerous times over since 1943, so it’s no wonder that followups are already being discussed.
As you’re no doubt aware, the latest actor given the honor of suiting up as the Dark Knight is that of Robert Pattinson. For now, we’re guaranteed at least one outing with him as the headliner, though I’m sure audiences and studio executives will clamor for more if director Matt Reeves’ epic proves to be the blockbuster we assume it will.

Even before “Joker” took its bow before the crowd at the Venice film festival on Saturday and earned an eight-minute standing ovation, Gold Derby-ites had already chosen its star Joaquin Phoenix as the most overdue lead actor who is likely to show up on the 2020 Oscar ballot in a poll.
Jack Nicholson cackled and leered his way through his role as the Caped Crusader’ arch-nemesis in Tim Burton’s 1989 “Batman” while Heath Ledger brought a quiet damaged-goods menace to the Joker in Chris Nolan’s 2008 “The Dark Knight” and won a posthumous supporting Oscar for his efforts. Both Jared Leto in 2016’s “Suicide Squad” and Cesar Romero on the campy ’60s TV series also gave the Clown Prince of Gotham City a spin.
But Phoenix and director Todd Phillips go the origins story route and get to the root of Arthur Fleck’s personality crisis that eventually builds up quite a body count.

Let the Oscar buzz begin. The first big breakout film premiering at the Venice International Film Festival, which started on Aug. 28, has arrived and the Oscar awards season has officially commenced. Reviews are full of glowing words for filmmaker Noah Baumbach‘s 10th feature, a divorce drama with hints of humor starring Scarlett Johansson as a TV actress who wants to move to L.A. and Adam Driver as a New York-based play director who does experimental theater engage in a bitter split and custody battle.
Yes, it is personal, but as Owen Gleiberman of “Variety” points out, it also focuses on the whole industry built the dissolution of marriages: “This is the first film set inside what might be called the divorce-industrial complex. It’s about two people coming to terms with a process that, however necessary, is more wounding at times than their heartbreak.” While he compares the...

Almost a decade ago Betty Gilpin and Natasha Lyonne were both performing in plays in the same theater in New York. To hear Lyonne tell it, she was in the black box, indie project that only had 20 seats to fill per show, while Gilpin was on the main stage. The East Coast performers were in each other’s orbits then, but now, their worlds are colliding much more, as they are both identify as “Jenji’s girls.”
They ended up shooting at the same studio in Astoria, Queens when Gilpin was on “Nurse Jackie” and Lyonne on “Orange is the New Black.” Now, both women also see Netflix as their homes: “Glow” just launched its third season on the platform on Aug. 9, while Lyonne co-created, writes, produces, directs and stars in “Russian Doll,” which was recently renewed for a second season.

Guillermo del Toro is still developing his film adaptation of Pinocchio. Pinocchio will be a stop-motion animated film, and The Jim Henson Company is helping him develop it. The project is set up at Netflix, and it has been a passion project for the filmmaker.
He previously shared that the film is not going to be a family friendly version of the story. Hell, I’m not even sure that the Disney version was family friendly! That movie was super dark! The filmmaker recently discussed his Pinocchio film with Variety and compared it to Frankenstein: and described it as a “brutalist fable.”
“To me, Pinocchio, very much like Frankenstein, is a blank canvas in which learning the curve of what the world is and what being human is are very attractive to do as a story. I’m very attracted to it because, thematically — and I don’t want...

Anyone who has followed Quentin Tarantino‘s film career as a writer-director know that he is as much about music selection as he is about searing profanity-laced monologues. Can anyone hear “Stuck in the Middle With You” by Stealers Wheel without thinking of Michael Madsen‘s Mr. Blonde as he cuts the ear off of a cop who’s tied up in a chair in “Resevoir Dogs”? Or who among us can’t help but to flashback to the sight of John Travolta‘s Vincent Vega and Uma Thurman‘s Mia Wallace dancing if they hear Chuck Berry’s “You Never Can Tell.”
As usual, Tarantino’s latest opus, the just-opened “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” has several memorable music-related scenes. Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, together for the first time ever on the big screen while acting as a kind of middle-age male dynamite, is an event to celebrate in and of itself.

Does Leonardo DiCaprio need to start rethinking the way he chooses his film projects? It’s a topic many moviegoers are discussing in the aftermath of a Hollywood Reporter article naming Leonardo DiCaprio the world’s “last movie star.” DiCaprio is one of few stars left in the industry whose name carries serious box office clout, but he hasn’t necessarily leveraged that star power to lift up women and minority directors. Guy Lodge, film critic for The Guardian and Variety, made a viral note on Twitter that DiCaprio has not worked with a female director since 1995.
“This is all well and good, and some fine work has come out of it, but I wouldn’t call his choices adventurous either: huge studio prestige productions with established male directors,” Lodge wrote in reaction to the THR story. “He hasn’t acted in a film with a female director since 1995, which...

Right at the end of Marvel’s announcement of their Phase 4 slate at Comic-Con yesterday, Kevin Feige slipped in the tease that “the mutants” were coming to the McU soon as well, reminding us all that Marvel Studios received the rights to the X-Men thanks to the Disney-Fox merger earlier this year.
It’s apparently too early to tell us anything specific about how the Children of the Atom will be folded into the franchise, but the Marvel Studios president did catch up with IGN following the panel and teased that fans can expect a different take on the characters from what we’ve seen before.

Directly after graduating from Juilliard in 1982, Lorraine Toussaint began rehearsals for her first paid acting gig, as Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare & Company’s production of “Macbeth.” After eight years of classical theater training, the Trinidad-born, New York-raised performer found herself among seasoned professionals like Kristin Linklater and Tim Saukiavicus, who mentored her as she entered the city’s Shakespearean heyday. At this past Sunday’s premiere of The Secret Life of Pets, Variety was able to chat with Harrison Ford on the red carpet about the upcoming Indiana Jones film that is currently in development. Military adviser Dale Dye may have done more to help Hollywood deliver an accurate portrayal of war than anyone else in the business. From “Platoon” and “Saving Private Ryan” to “The Thin Red Line” and his most recent work, 2019’s “The Last Full Measure,” his attention to detail — along with his boot camp methods for teaching actors to be soldiers — share a singular vision: realism.
A veteran of three tours in Vietnam, Dye was a Marine correspondent awarded the Bronze Star for heroism in action. He’s equal parts storyteller, military historian and psychologist, and his performance prep goes where others fail to tread: into actors’ heads.
Born in 1944, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., Dale tagged along with his father, a liquor salesman, as he stocked local bars. Hearing war tales from the clientele, the youngster became fascinated with the military. After the Naval Academy turned down his application, he enlisted at age 20 in the Marines,...

One of the most divisive topics to come out of Avengers: Endgame is the depiction of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, who takes a mighty step backwards in badassery, but a mighty step forward in belt size.
Following the heroes’ failure to stop Thanos from wiping out half of the universe in Infinity War, the God of Thunder retreats and goes into a deep, beer-filled slumber. By the time Rocket Raccoon and Hulk find him, Thor’s hair has at least quadrupled in length, and his belly has increased tenfold. The man who was once arguing with Star-Lord over who looked better now had the physical characteristics of the Dude.
In an interview with Variety, Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. weighed in on the controversial decision, praising Hemsworth’s performance.

Before Chris Hemsworth took Thor to new and unexpected directions, he showed off his comedic chops as a clueless receptionist in the 2016 “Ghostbusters” reboot, starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.
In this week’s issue of Variety, Hemsworth reveals that he almost quit the movie directed by Paul Feig. “The night before I was shooting, I almost pulled out,” Hemsworth says. “Three or four weeks prior, Paul said to me, ‘I’m going to write up the character. Don’t worry.’ And then I got the script and nothing had changed.”
His agent, Bryan Lourd, set up a last-minute meeting with Feig, who assured Hemsworth there would be a lot to do — through improvisation. “I was really scared walking onto that set,” Hemsworth says. “I had no real plan, so I was just feeding off of them, and I just felt ridiculous. So I used that.

If there’s one film we desperately want to know more about, it’s definitely The Batman. When it comes to the DC Extended Universe, Warner Bros. has made some missteps with the Caped Crusader in the past, but we’re keen to see where Matt Reeves (of Cloverfield and War for the Planet of the Apes fame) takes the franchise. Of course, while the film’s creative team has largely been reported on in the past, the cast is an entirely different can of worms.
Last week, independent articles from both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety indicated that Twilight star Robert Pattinson would be donning the cowl; a reveal which was shortly followed by a requisite “freak out” on social media, and a predictable petition to undo recent casting decisions. Aside from news regarding Pattinson though, plenty of other A-listers have thrown their hat into the ring when it...
