Everyone loves fun car films. With Fast X spawning a spin-off and sequel and Gran Tusimo (out on VOD Tuesday) doing decent business at the box office, the genre isn’t going anywhere. We thought now would be a good time to check out some less-known (or underrated) entries into the genre.
Taxi
We’re going to cheat right off the start by counting this whole series and one entry on this list. The films here are action-comedy classics for fans of French movies and those who love a good car stunt. The first established the characters, but the second is possibly the best of the bunch. Only die-hard fans will want to bother from the third to the fourth to the fifth. However, those first two are worth seeking out what the French do with a modified Peugeot 406, the vacation town of Nice, and a cast that most will recognize from other movies.

While it was certainly on the downturn in the late 1980s, it still seemingly had a new title released every week. In 1989 alone, the slasher world saw the releases of A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, Deadly Manor, I Madman, and a whole bunch more. It was a year for slasher sequels with a few originals peppered in. Slashers were big box office and direct-to-video draw in general and studios were churning them out. Clint Howard – son of Rance, brother of Ron, uncle of Bryce, etc. – has been acting since he was a child, and over the decades has racked up over 250 credits, from Star Trek and The Andy Griffith Show to The Wraith, Carnosaur, Ticks, Little Nicky, Apollo 13, a couple Silent Night, Deadly Night sequels, Rob Zombie’s Halloween, 3 from Hell, and Solo: A Star Wars Story. You’ve almost certainly seen him around. His most recent credit was in the Nicolas Cage film The Old Way… and one of his most popular roles came in the 1995 horror comedy Ice Cream Man (watch it Here). Ice Cream Man has developed a strong cult following in the years since its release, and Howard is aiming to bring the audience more killer ice cream man action. He took to Instagram to reveal that he recently got some collaborators together for a reading of the Ice Cream Man sequel script!

For his third feature, Jordan Peele ambitiously sets out to create a sci-fi spectacle, and he succeeds greatly with the magic he’s able to create in Nope. If there’s one thing I would say to readers out there before I get into the nuts and bolts of Peele’s latest (and just know that there will be no spoilers), it’s that if you think that you’re in for a traditional alien invasion story with Nope, you most definitely are not. For some out there, that might be an issue. But for this writer, that’s probably what I loved about it most. Don’t worry - there’s no bait and switch here. There are aliens. But what Nope really is about are powerful entities that are hellbent on consumption, with little regard for the lives they are affecting, and we see that play out in...

At what point does self-awareness turn inside out, to become the very thing it’s observing? “The Phantom of the Open” tries so hard to be a winking commentary on British heartwarmers about lovable outsiders. And its efforts are, as often as not, entertaining. But after a while, it becomes clear that what it wants more than anything is to be embraced as a crowd-pleasing comedy itself.
After noting that his film is based on a true story, director Craig Roberts begins at the end, with an aged Maurice Flitcroft (Mark Rylance) reminiscing about his rather extraordinary golfing career. Why was it so extraordinary? Because, we learn in flashback, it was the epitome of ordinary.
Back in 1976, Flitcroft is just an unassuming shipyard worker, raising three unassuming boys with his unassuming wife Jean (Sally Hawkins). His teen twins (Jonah and Christian Lees) want to be disco dancers, and his older...

This Young Justice: Phantoms review contains spoilers.
Young Justice: Phantoms Season 4 Episode 24
It’s not possible for the Young Justice: Phantoms team to be reading what’s published on this little ol’ site and responding to it in almost real time. The lead time on animation is usually massive: what we see on HBO Max was probably written a year or more ago. That said, it certainly feels like the writers were thinking the same thing I was after last week: holy cats there’s a lot left to do.
And this week they started crossing stuff off their list.
General Zod
By my count, we’ve got three episodes left, and three villains that the story is orbiting around. The first is General Zod, who along with a Phantom Zone-brainwashed Conner Kent, spends much of the episode kicking the asses of the original team minus M’gann.

Young Justice Season 4 Episode 23
I suppose after such a strong run of episodes, there was bound to be some reversion to mean for Young Justice: Phantoms. And while “Ego and Superego” isn’t necessarily a bad episode, it certainly is puzzling. It has me wondering what the game is when they introduce a brand new (to the season) storyline, three episodes from the finish.
By my count, we’ve got five unresolved plots that are all approximately converging.
The Phantom Zone
Conner remains trapped in the Phantom Zone this week. Phantom Girl, awakened at the end of the New Genesis arc, told her story to Conner this week – apparently, when she phases between the Team’s dimension and her home dimension of Bgztl, she passes through the Phantom Zone, the gooey stuff that keeps the dimension separate. She reached to save Conner as...

This year’s Oscars telecast incorporated reunions of cast members from classic movies such as “The Godfather,” “Pulp Fiction,” and “Juno.” Last year’s Tony Awards actually did something similar, bringing together cast members from different Broadway classics such as “Hairspray,” “Ragtime,” “Rent,” and “Wicked” for performances as the industry was fighting to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Since the Tonys will be presenting their landmark 75th annual ceremony this year, I think it would be even more fitting if they reunite more co-stars from Broadway classics of yesteryear to perform or even present awards. Here are some suggestions. Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know which you’d most like to see.

April is here and that means there’s a whole slew of new releases headed to Hulu to meet your streaming needs.
In the realm of original films, Hulu has the queer rom-com “Crush,” starring Rowan Blanchard and Auli’i Cravalho, which debuts April 29. Meanwhile, new library arrivals this month include the Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt sci-fi mind-bender “Looper,” both “Shrek” and “Shrek 2,” and all four films in “The Twilight Saga.”
April is also a big month for new TV shows on Hulu. Andrew Garfield’s hot streak continues with the FX drama “Under the Banner of Heaven,” which debuts exclusively on Hulu April 28. For reality TV fans, “The Kardashians” premieres on April 14. Hulu also has two franchise spinoff kids shows returning with Season 7 of “Madagascar: A Little Wild” on April 4 and Season 2 of “The Croods: Family Tree” on April 5.

Though the confusingly named initiative “FX on Hulu” is on its way out, FX is still bringing premium television to Hulu in the meantime.
Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by FX limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. This adaptation of the non-fiction book by John Krakauer stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon police detective whose faith is shaken when investigating a murder involving the church.
It’s not all just FX on the TV side of things for Hulu this month, however. The streamer is debuting second seasons of its series The Hardy Boys (April 6) and Woke (April 8). There isn’t much to report from Hulu’s original movies arm aside from true crime documentary Captive Audience on April 21. But that doc about one family’s 50-year journey for justice sounds like a must-watch.

Eighties movies have a certain charm, and while they can be hit or miss, even when they are classed as “bad” they can actually be quite good. The Wraith is one of those movies that some may call bad, but actually has all the charm to make it a hidden treasure of the 80s.
When a mysterious car takes to the roads of a small town in Arizona it appears that they are targeting a local gang of violent road-racing motor heads. Is this a victim from their past returned to get revenge, or have they just bitten off more than they can chew?
Just looking at the cast of The Wraith should catch interest for a lot of people, not only fans of the 80s, but fans of cult movies as a whole.

Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins’ death last Thursday on the set of Rust is the latest in a long list of camera crew members who have been killed on the job, making camera work far and away the most dangerous work in Hollywood, more deadly than even stunts.
In the last 10 years, four members of camera teams have been killed on the set in the US – twice the number of stunt fatalities.
Camera crews work directly in front of the action, with nothing but their cameras between them and a speeding car, train or bullet. They’ve been killed in airplane and helicopter crashes; washed overboard and drowned in the ocean; struck and killed by a runaway stunt car; and crushed to death in a camera truck rollover.

Back when we did our Class of 1986 series years ago, one of the films that I decided to champion was The Wraith from writer/director Mike Marvin, which I hadn’t really seen discussed a whole lot amongst genre fans. Hopefully, that will now change with the brand new Vestron Blu-ray that came out last week, because if there’s any justice in this world, this horror/action hybrid will finally end up on more folks’ radars with this new release. It may not be the most original genre movie to come out of the ‘80s, but considering its stellar cast, incredible soundtrack, and a handful of mind-blowingly great driving sequences, The Wraith is very much a movie that should earn a rediscovery phase now.
The Wraith tells the story of a teenager named Jamie who is murdered by a street-racing gang, led by the maniacal Packard (Nick Cassavetes). Soon after,...

Hello, everyone! I hope you have your wallets ready because we have a huge day of horror and sci-fi home media releases this week, and there are a ton of different titles fans are definitely going to want to add to their collections. If you’re anything like most gamers from a certain era, you probably grew up assuming that Zelda and Link were in love. After all, he is a hero, she is a princess, he was a boy, she was a girl…can we make it any more obvious?
However, the truth of the matter is that nothing is quite that obvious when it comes to Link and Zelda’s relationship. Much like your relationship status on Facebook whenever you felt like stirring up a little drama, the relationship between Link and Zelda over the years has been decidedly complicated.
That’s part of the reason why Skyward Sword has always been one of the most interesting Zelda games from a lore perspective. After years of ambiguity, complications, winks, half-answers, and lingering questions, Skyward Sword gave us a Link and Zelda relationship that couldn’t possibly be interpreted as anything but...

“The Wedding of the Century,” a documentary about the wedding of Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles, will bow on BBC and ITV’s streamer BritBox in July in time for the event’s 40th anniversary.
On July 29, 1981, a record 750 million people in 74 countries tuned in to see the couple exchange vows at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. British Movietone shot the ceremony on 35mm film, which has now been upgraded to 4K resolution. The restored footage is the centerpiece of the documentary from Touchdown Films, which also includes unheard anecdotes from the day and interviews with key insiders involved in planning the event.

Exclusive: Screenwriter Anthony McCarten and his Muse Of Fire Productions has teamed with Scooter Braun’s Sb Projects and producer/financier Compelling Pictures’ Denis O’Sullivan & Jeff Kalligheri for Phantom. That is the working title of a music-filled big scale contemporary psychological thriller film loosely inspired by the 1910 novel Le Fantome de L’Opera by Gaston Leroux.
Pic will be a psychological thriller in the vein of Black Swan and Misery, set in London’s contemporary music scene. Leroux’s depiction of a destructive relationship remains, as will a dark love story, but the movie intends to upend the romanticism associated with previous interpretations, and instead lean into the suspense and horror that was a big part of the book.
Scooter Braun and James Shin will produce for Sb Projects, McCarten for Muse of Fire and O’Sullivan and Kalligheri for Compelling Pictures, which will also finance. Sbp’s Scott Manson will be exec producer.

Makoto Tezuka's The Legend of the Stardust Brothers (1985) is playing exclusively on Mubi starting March 18, 2021 in many countries in the series Rediscovered. It’s ironic that Legend of the Stardust Brothers, a film about the meteoric rise, fall, and disappearance of two pop idols, nearly suffered the same fate as its protagonists. The anarchic musical was the first feature from up-and-comer Tezka, nee Makoto Tezuka, who at 22 had already garnered national attention for his creative shorts. ‘The Show Must Go On’ Documentary Chronicles Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Fight for Theater During Lockdown
Last year, after the Covid-19 pandemic shut down Broadway and the West End indefinitely, Andrew Lloyd Webber was desperate to find a way to safely reopen theaters. The composer of some of the world’s most iconic musicals hit on the idea of staging two of his most popular shows, “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Cats,” in South Korea, where strict testing and tracing protocols had helped the country better deal with the global health crisis. Lloyd Webber was hopeful that the productions could demonstrate to officials that with the right measures in place, live events could take place without outbreaks.
“We’ve got to get open again,” Lloyd Webber says. “And I don’t just mean Broadway or London. I mean regional theaters and nightclubs and live music.”
When Sammi Cannold, a theater director and filmmaker, learned from her friend Kristen Blodgette, a music supervisor on Lloyd Webber’s shows,...

¡Ai Caramba! It’s the best movie ever made about a killer Spanish Conquistador from beyond the grave. This is probably the most satisfying of Richard Cunha’s monster romps despite being rudimentary in all respects. The script is dire and the monster just a generic bogeyman, but the actors are pleasant and the locations attractive. The filmmakers had the last laugh anyway, as the plain-wrap show garnered a nationwide theatrical release. The Film Detective wisely brought on Tom Weaver to front the extras, as he had the picture fully documented years ago.
