1995 wasn’t a good year for Sylvester Stallone at the multiplex. His summer tentpole, Judge Dredd, flopped domestically, and it was quickly followed by Richard Donner’s Assassins, which only grossed $30 million at the domestic box office. While Sly’s career had seen a few slumps, his straightforward action movies typically performed, and the failure of those two films put his clout as one of the world’s biggest stars in jeopardy. In this episode of Sylvester Stallone Revisited, we’re going to talk about a movie that was supposed to be a big-budget, commercial change of pace for the actor but wound up being the last would-be blockbuster he’d star in for years. That’s right; we’re going to talk about Rob Cohen’s Daylight.

The Anaconda episode of The Black Sheep was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Ryan Cultrera, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
I’ll be the first to admit my mistakes. When I made that Alligator 2 defense, and no, doing that video is not the mistake I’m referring to, I mentioned that the giant monster movie had become somewhat of a lost art, particularly in the ’90s. Then I ended up rewatching Anaconda (watch it Here) and realized I had totally forgotten about it. That’s because it got lost in the likes of Deep Blue Sea and Lake Placid. Both those movies seem to have longer lasting impacts. Deep Blue Sea has that great surprise kill and Lake Placid has, well, it has Betty White. There are others, too. The Relic is a gory fun time, Bats isn...

1993 was a banner year for Sylvester Stallone. While he had started the nineties on shaky ground due to the failure of Rocky V and his two comedies, Oscar and Stop or My Mom Will Shoot, the back-to-back success of Cliffhanger and Demolition Man reestablished Sly as one of Hollywood’s biggest action heroes. For his follow-up, he would pick another action flick, albeit one that embraced elements of another genre quickly gaining popularity in Hollywood: The erotic thriller.
Flashback to 1992. The movie Basic Instinct was a worldwide smash and established Sharon Stone as the biggest sex symbol of the day. A veteran actress with a career going back a decade, her performance as the murderous but insanely alluring Catherine Trammel made her a cultural icon. Of all the actors to emerge in the 1970s, there are few, if any, as captivating, unpredictable and exciting as James Woods. He began the decade, and his on screen career for that matter, for legendary director Elia Kazan in The Visitors (1972), and in the next few years established himself as one of American film's most promising young performers. He turned up as villains in such classic TV shows as Kojak and Streets of San Francisco, but he also appeared in some major 70s movies too, such as 1973's The Way We Were, Arthur Penn's Night Movies (1975) and The Gambler (1975). But it was his performance in The Onion Field (1979) which really signalled his arrival, as the sociopathic cop killer Greg Powell. The film, based on Joseph Wambaugh's best-selling non-fiction book, was a critical smash and earned Woods his first wave of acclaim.

The CW is continuing its interest in international series. The youth-skewing network has acquired Professionals, a loose remake of the Christian Slater-fronted action movie Soldiers of Fortune for Scandinavian SVOD service Viaplay.
The series, which was first revealed by Deadline in 2019, stars Smallville’s Welling as Vincent Corbo, a top-tier security operative, who is paid to protect the interests of rich and powerful clients by any means necessary – legal or not.
After a next-gen medical satellite explodes on launch, Corbo is hired by the rocket’s designer – billionaire futurist Peter Swann, played by Fraser, who suspects sabotage. Complicating Corbo’s new gig is his former paramour and now Swann’s fiancée, medical visionary Dr. Grace Davila, played by Wonder Woman’s Elena Anaya, who is racing to help stave off a global catastrophe. Jack Nicholson has had a long career playing brooding rebels, crazed villains and sneering charmers on screen. Soon he’ll star opposite Kristen Wiig in a remake of “Toni Erdmann.” He’s a fixture of American cinema and the Lakers courtside seating. For his 80th birthday, we aimed to rank all of Jack’s major, already iconic roles, from worst to best.
“Man Trouble” (1992)
“Man Trouble” is a ridiculous screwball crime comedy in which Nicholson and Ellen Barkin get upstaged by horny dogs. It seems impossible the same guy who did “Five Easy Pieces” made this.
“A Safe Place” (1971)
This bizarre, formless ’70s relic based on a play stars Tuesday Weld and Orson Welles opposite Nicholson about a girl living a fantasy in which she never grows up.
“The Terror” (1963)
Nicholson gives a stiff performance in this Roger Corman picture opposite Boris Karloff, but he gets to kiss a woman who transforms into a corpse.

In Sergio Corbucci’s 1967 Italian Western, “The Hellbenders” (1967), now available on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber, embittered Colonel Jonas (Joseph Cotten) devises a plan to avenge the outcome of the Civil War. Where today’s cultural conservatives mostly express their nostalgia for the Old South by gathering to protest the removal of Confederate monuments, Jonas takes more extreme measures. He and his three sons -- the remnant of his old command, known as the Hellbenders -- ambush a military convoy transporting $1.5 million in greenbacks. Slaughtering the convoy’s cavalry escort, they transfer the stolen money to a makeshift coffin supposedly containing the remains of Jonas‘ “son-in-law” Ambrose Allen, another Confederate officer killed in action at the Battle of Nashville. In truth, an officer named Ambrose Allen died at Nashville, but he wasn’t Jonas’ son-in-law, and his corpse isn’t in the coffin. Jonas picked his name off...

Sylvester Stallone has reached a confidential settlement with Warner Bros. in a dispute over profits from four films, including the 1993 action film “Demolition Man.”
Stallone filed suit in April 2017, claiming he had not received any profit participation from “Demolition Man” for a period of 18 years. Under his contract, Stallone was entitled to at least 15% of gross profits from the film.
The suit alleged that Warner Bros. stopped paying his profit participation in 1997, and did not resume until after he complained in 2014. The studio’s initial response was that the film was $67 million in deficit. The studio later acknowledged that Stallone was entitled to additional profits, and sent him a check for $2.8 million.
Stallone filed suit, alleging that he still had not been sufficiently compensated. Warner Bros. attorneys countered in June 2017, arguing that the suit was a “transparent attempt to grab some headlines and wring more money out of Warner on...

There’s a certain kind of true-life thriller that benefits from being made in a rough-around-the-edges way. “Operation Finale” is one of those films. It’s a drama about how Israeli agents from the Mossad and Shin Bet, in 1960, learned where Adolf Eichmann, the infamous Nazi war criminal, had disappeared to — Argentina — and went on a hunt to capture him. They extracted him from a suburb of Buenos Aires, where he was hiding in plain sight, and brought him to Israel, where he stood trial for war crimes in the famous 1961 courtroom marathon that was more than just the trial of one man. In many ways, it dragged the full awareness of Nazi atrocities onto the world stage for the first time.

The summer of 1993 felt like a high stakes cinematic card trick. A full deck of superstars was roughly shuffled so that by summer’s end, some kings ended up as jokers and many a knave turned over a sweet ace. Bluffs were called, some royal flushes turned up out of nowhere, and in the end the whole table was kicked over by a T-Rex, sending all the chips flying.

When you think of Sylvester Stallone you think of two characters: Rocky and Rambo. And then when you think about him some more his run of action films in the 90s come to mind. Movies like Demolition Man or The Specialist or Assassins top my list. But there’s one movie that I’ll always consider to be one of his best and that’s the 1981 cops chasing terrorist film Nighthawks. The movie stars Stallone and Billy Dee Williams as police detectives who are trying to tack down a terrorist in New York City who is played by Rutger Hauer. It’s one

Sylvester Stallone has an extraordinary body of film work that has to be respected. His Rocky and Rambo franchises alone make him a legend in the film industry. However, Stallone did so much more than that. From serious roles like Copland to his amazing 90s run of action films like Demolition Man, The Specialist, Cliffhanger, The Assassins (need I go on?), the man just kept working and kept pumping out solid films. Even today movies like The Expendables are box office hits. But to know Sylvester Stallone is to marvel at all he did in the 80s. That was his

The 90s were a boom time for bad movie sex, and this is Hall of Fame level in that so much money, time and effort has gone...

During an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Cordon, Sharon Stone came right out and revealed that she’s going to appear in an upcoming Marvel movie.
I am going to do a Marvel movie. I’m just doing a wee part in a Marvel movie, upcoming, and I can’t tell, because you know, you have to sign confidentiality agreements. But I’m going to do a wee part in a Marvel movie now. That’s it.
That’s all she would say, but it was more than enough to send the fan community into a frenzy of speculation. Right now, the most popular theory seems to be a small role in the currently shooting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Reason being that director James Gunn is a big fan of all things ’80s, and – if the rumor holds weight – has already made room for Stone’s The Specialist co-star,...

Well, this is interesting. Sharon Stone was a guest on The late Late Show with James Corden, and during their chat the actress revealed that she's going to appear in an upcoming Marvel movie. Stone didn't get into specifics, and by her own admission it'll only be a small part, but one would imagine it'd still be more than just a brief cameo. Here's the quote in full: "I am going to do a Marvel movie. I’m just doing a wee part in a Marvel movie, upcoming, and I can’t tell, because you know, you have to sign confidentiality agreements. But I’m going to do a wee part in a Marvel movie now. That’s it." So, which movie is she talking about? There's a chance it could be the currently shooting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - which might also feature Stone's The Specialist co-star...

Worried your sex life isn't like it looks on TV or in the movies? Don't be. Sex involving food, a piano or gunfire is never as fun as it sounds
When you've been brought up with pop culture as your unofficial guardian, it's easy to assume that you've been lumbered with the world's dullest sex life. You're forever comparing your experiences with those you see on screen, and you beat yourself up when you inevitably fall short.
For instance, not one single person has ever attempted to stab me to death with a pickaxe mid-coitus, like Sharon Stone did to that poor chump at the start of Basic Instinct. No union of mine has ever ended with my partner shooting a baddie in the chest on a moving train at the point of orgasm, like Cindy Crawford did in Fair Game. Nor, to my eternal annoyance, have I ever been...

A superb character actor James Woods has turned in some remarkable performances. Here are a few of his underappreciated roles...
If you're looking for an actor who's far more interested in being a character than a hero, then surely James Woods is your man. He's built up a body of work over several decades that has rightly brought him a degree of acclaim - Videodrome, the brilliant Cop, Ghosts Of Mississippi, Contact, Salvador, and his growing collection of excellent TV roles - but in the 80s and 90s, he popped up in lots of films that are rarely talked about now.
There are so many seemingly lost great James Woods roles, that it seemed long overdue we try and right that particular wrong. So here's a collection of perhaps the lower profile, yet brilliant, performances from his career. And this is just a few of them.

Talking to Eric Roberts is a strange experience. He's been in 270 'IMDb titles (some of which he's actually seen), he can summon Sylvester Stallone and Christopher Nolan on speed-dial after appearing in their films, he's Oscar-nominated (More of which later), he's Julia Roberts brother for heaven's sake... he Should be sitting on a throne of Hollywood royalty.
Yet he speaks in the bemused tones of the eternal outsider, the little boy who shouted at the naked Emperor, who has refused to watch the Oscars since... well, let him explain.
Eric Roberts - a PR's nightmare, but a journalist's delight
"Here's the only way to it," he surmises in a seductive southern brawl, from his home in California. "It advertises the movie which makes money, which makes you look more valuable. It's all about status, money and luck."
But he's been Oscar-nominated himself. Surely that means a touch of fondness for...

Whether dressing up as vicar, or as Jennifer Lopez's cowboy boyfriend, Statham has rarely seemed so versatile
Watching this on a mobile device? Then click here
There are people who think that all Jason Statham films are identical. Those people are wrong. For example, The Transporter (where Jason Statham played a transporter) is completely different to The Mechanic (where Jason Statham played a mechanic). Then there's The Expendables (where Jason Statham played an expendable), which couldn't have been more different to The Bank Job (where Jason Statham played a bank job).
All of which means that Jason Statham's next film, Parker, could legitimately be about anything. Obviously there's a very good chance that he'll play a parker in it, but other than that it's wide open. Parker – which co-stars Jennifer Lopez – isn't out until early next year, but a trailer has just been released. Let's take a closer look,...

He may be expendable now but in 1994, Sylvester Stallone was a bomb expert helping Sharon Stone destroy the mafia that killed her family in The Specialist.
The movie came out when Stallone was at the peak of his career, just after his megahits Cliffhanger and Demolition Man and The Specialist went on to become his third hit in a row. The movie earned more than $170M internationally. But Stallone nearly missed starring in the movie. Steven Seagal was the studio's first choice, but they balked at his $9M salary and offered the role to Sly. David Fincher was also slated to direct but producers got cold feet after the poor performance of Aliens 3.

Democracy is a flawed concept. Here are 50 films that the IMDb voters would unfairly have you believe are worth no more than 5.9/10…
Six out of ten isn’t a very good score, really. It’s barely over half marks. 60 per cent. It’s alright, but it’s not great. You wouldn’t be proud of getting six out of ten on most kinds of tests, would you? So you might assume that any film that scores under six stars out of ten on the IMDb isn’t very good – possibly even terrible.
But that’s not always the case. Averages don’t tell the whole story; anything that’s potentially controversial or divisive will end up with a score that suggests most people weren’t that bothered about it, since high and low scores will be averaged – and IMDb users often exaggerate their scores anyway, giving a film one star...

The lives, careers and friendship of legendary Hungary-born cinematographers László Kovács and Vilmos Zsigmond are examined in the 2008 documentary No Subtitles Necessary: Laszlo & Vilmos,
László Kovács (r.) and Vilmos Zsigmond focus on their work in No Subtitles Necessary.
Both survivors of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, Kovács and Zsigmond immigrated in poverty to America in the late 1950s, helping each other up the ladder out of the underbelly of Hollywood all the while holding onto their dreams. After ten years of no-budget toil, Kovács’s camera broke Hollywood’s rules with Easy Rider, directed by Dennis Hopper. Suddenly in demand, he recommended Vilmos to both Peter Fonda and Robert Altman, where Zsigmond poured his “poetic realism” into Fonda’s 1971 The Hired Hand and Altman’s 1971 McCabe & Mrs. Miller. The two cinematographers quickly became the go-to camera guys of the New Hollywood, ultimately yielding some 140 credits between them,...

Sleep Little Lush
This follow-up to the previous soundtrack mix, Hyper Sleep, is very much the same animal: a chance gathering of mesmerizing music tracks, carefully arranged to focus on the interstitial character of film music—its ability to distill into hallucinatory moments, the most sensual or emotional qualities of a film’s nature, and amplify these sensations to increase their temporal impact. With this idea of music as intoxicant in mind, the passing this year of John Barry was a loss of one of the great “perfumers” of film composing (for more on music as perfume, see Daniel Kasman’s “Herrmann’s Perfume”). The beautiful themes that Barry scored for the world of 007 that open this collection set the spell for a kaleidoscopic (largely) 60s and 70s sample of some of the best film music written by Ennio Morricone,...

The classic 2000Ad character Judge Dredd was first adapted for the big screen in 1995, and the results were flawed, to say the least. Phil takes a look back…
First, let me put my cards on the table. For the best part of thirty years, I have been a huge fan of the character Judge Dredd, and the British comic 2000Ad in which he appears.
I state this at the outset just so that you can appreciate the effort it has taken for me not to revert to tedious and predictable whinging about Stallone removing the helmet, Rob Schneider being cast as Fergee, and Dredd exchanging a kiss with Judge Hershey at the film’s conclusion.
Not for me the polemic of the immovable fan-boy, but rather the dispassionate objectivity of a reasonable film critic, someone who can see that compromises have to be made, and that comic book movie franchises...

HighDefDiscNews got their hands on a trade ad today, that confirms an August 16th release date for some upcoming Sylvester Stallone action films from Warner Bros. on Blu-ray. The four films include: Demolition Man; Assassins; Cobra; and The Specialist.
As you can see from the ad, they have cover art already. Best yet, is that Demolition Man will include an audio commentary with Marco Brambilla and Cobra will include a making-of featurette, as well as an audio commentary with director George P. Cosmatos.
The source didn’t mention anything for Assassins or The Specialist, so it’s safe to assume a trailer at most. This is extremely exciting news for fans of Stallone, as well as of some action packed flashbacks.

Warner Home Video is delivering Sylvester Stallone movies Assassins, Cobra, Demolition Man and The Specialist in high-definition Blu-ray on Aug. 16. And good ole Sly is his usual bad ass self in each one.
The oldest of the films, 1986’s Cobra stars Stallone as a lock-and-load city cop on the trail of a serial killer. Stallone’s ex-wife Brigitte Nielsen (Beverly Hills Cop II) also is in the cast.
Stallone also plays a cop in 1993’s Demolition Man, albeit a cop in the future. Cryogenically frozen for a crime he didn’t commit (sentenced to become a popsicle was better than the death penalty in 1996, apparenlty), Stallone is thawed out in the future to take down his old enemy (Wesley Snipes, Game of Death). A convicted killer from the 1990s, Snipes also was frozen but is revived for parole and stars a murderous rampage in the future crime-free society. As they battle,...

'I hear you control your explosions,' Sharon Stone purrs to Sly Stallone in The Specialist. It makes you wish more film directors could control theirs
Towards the end of Tetsuya Nakashima's stunning revenge psychodrama Confessions, there's a bomb blast filmed in a way I can't recall having seen before. No mean feat, because explosions are now such an integral part of the film-maker's train set that it's hard to think of a modern action movie that doesn't feature at least one orgasmic detonation, followed by cool guys strolling away with nary a singed eyebrow, not even (as the song goes) bothering to look back.
It wasn't always thus. Explosions in movies used to be memorable. Their natural bailiwick was the war film, but they also cropped up in gangster movies ("Made it Ma! Top of the world!" from White Heat) and thrillers. Hitchcock, who famously blew up a...

I already got my obligatory sentimental Valentine's Day post out of the way, so now it's time to have some fun. To celebrate the heart-shaped box industry's favorite day of the year, Filmdrunk assembled a montage of the most disturbing kisses in movie history:
Certainly not Filmdrunk's most authoritative compilation, but a good start anyway. To which I strongly believe needs to be added:
-"Batman Returns," when Michelle Pfeiffer simultaneously French kisses Christopher Walken (euww!) and a taser (ouch!).
-"Kissed," Molly Parker as a necrophiliac mortician. Creepy. Unless you're into making out with corpses. Then this movie is totally hot.
-"The Specialist," naked Sylvester Stallone making out with Sharon Stone while grinding all over her. And they're wet too.
-"Dumb and Dumber," when it looks like Jim Carrey is trying to surgically remove Lauren Holly's lungs by sucking them out through her mouth.
-"Savage Grace,...

The movies have some valuable lessons to teach us about bedroom shenanigans. For here are 15 films that might just put you off sex altogether…
It might be the week where romance is supposed to be prevalent, but you’re playing hanky-panky roulette if you’re looking for the movies to get you in the mood.
Because whilst a good romance may lead to you settling down for an evening of memorable, passionate how’s-your-father, if you pop the wrong film in, you’re more likely to be reaching for a cardigan and a good book than a post-coital cigarette and a big grin.
Here, then, are 15 films you might want to avoid popping in your DVD player when it’s a night of nudge-nudge-wink-wink that you’re craving…
Note: We’re leaving the nasty films out of the list. To be included, every scene depicted had to be consensual.

Film composer John Barry, who died yesterday aged 77, remains an inspiration to many. We look at some of his finest work, from Beat Girl to Bond
Already a successful band leader, with the John Barry Seven, the movie world was introduced to the composer when he provided the music to Beat Girl, a movie starring his friend Adam Faith. The result was the first soundtrack album to warrant a UK release, the launch of a five times Oscar-winning film career for Barry, one of the first examples of rock music being incorporated into film scores and, best of all, a killer, world-class opening title sequence.
Barry won two Oscars for his astounding work on Born Free, one for the soundtrack and the other for his collaboration with lyricist Don Black for the classic Matt Monro title song. Amazingly, this signature tune, a chart topper even in cover versions by Roger Williams...

One of the true musical greats, composer John Barry, passed away over the weekend in New York City. He was 77.
At the start of the 1960's, Barry was brought on to re-arrange Monty Norman's theme for “Dr. No”, the first James Bond film. The resulting tune remains one of the most famous pieces of film music to have ever been produced, and Barry's signature and easily identifiable style became synonymous with the series.
Barry ultimately scored eleven of the twenty-two Bond films including "From Russia with Love," "Goldfinger," "Thunderball," "You Only Live Twice," "Diamonds are Forever," "The Man with the Golden Gun," "Moonraker," Octopussy," "A View to A Kill," "The Living Daylights" and arguably his most revered score - "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (which itself heavily inspired Michael Giacchino's "The Incredibles" score).
He also collaborated on many of the series' most famous theme songs including Tom Jones' "Thunderball,...

HollywoodNews.com: The Expendables which topped the weekend box-office marks the first time that cinematographer Jeff Kimball, Asc has shot a film with Sylvester Stallone directing and playing a leading role. Their only previous co-venture was 16 years ago when Kimball lensed The Specialist, which featured Stallone in a leading role. Kimball says they had an open, collaborative relationship beginning with the first day of planning. They quickly agreed that the story calls for a natural look in a wide screen film format that pulls the audience deep into the action-packed story.
It?s standard procedure for cinematographers to film tests with leading members of the cast during pre-production planning to see how their skin tones and eyes handle light and shadows. Nuances in how they look at different times are like non-verbal dialog. ?Sly told me that wasn?t necessary,? Kimball says. ?He said, I trust you.

He is one of the most recognized "movie stars" of the past 30 years. He has been nominated for an Academy Award both as an actor and as a screenwriter and approaching the age of 65 he could beat the living crap out of most men without so much as breaking a sweat.
He is Sylvester Stallone and once again he sits atop the box office mountain with his newest film "The Expendables", the high octane adventure that is essentially a love letter to fans of the great action films of the 80's.
But amidst the success of "The Expendables" a lingering question hangs in the air... what does (or can) Sylvester Stallone do next?
Let's rewind a little bit. 20 years ago Stallone was one of the most bankable and successful stars in Hollywood. He was so good that even though he had a couple of duds that would have killed other actors careers (yes,...

Who on earth decided that white cats should be the ultimate incarnation of evil? They nestle in the laps of Cardinal Richelieu and Blofeld
So you think women and ethnic minorities get a raw deal in the movies? That's nothing compared to the way cinema discriminates against cats. Dogs are waggy-tailed brown-nosers who save tots from drowning; cats are stuck-up, psychotic and about as trustworthy as a 1940s film noir femme fatale. Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore is only the latest example of Hollywood's insidious anti-feline agenda. It's a slight advance on the first Cats & Dogs film in that, this time, not all the cats are wicked. But the villain who wants to take over the world is a cat, and the psycho in Hannibal Lecter restraints is a cat. Film-makers love dogs, we all know that. But what have they got against cats?
