At Times Sick And Twisted, Cow And Chicken Is Still Great Fun
wchngliu25 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Similar on the lines to Ren and Stimpy when it comes to its gross out, often sick humour, Cow And Chicken, alongside Johnny Bravo, the Powerpuff Girls and Dexter's Lab represented the last of Cartoon Network/Hanna Barbera's talents. Clever, ingenious, quirky but also oh so ever twisted at the same time, this effort centering on a brother named Chicken and his younger sister named Cow, who live with a headless and bodiless mum and dad was just terrific.

The two couldn't be more different from each other: a teenage Chicken was often irritated with his life, as well as with Cow's antics and like with all of us, has a love/hate relationship with his sister. Child-like Cow is by and large, um large but comes across as naive at times but sweet and caring. Particularly when towards her brother, she is often overprotective of him.

The show has a strange fascination with butts- eating pork butts, Cow's large butt, the Red Devil's own large arse. Yes it can often come across as crude and nasty in places, but not to the extent to which it is anything like South Park, Beavis and Butthead or Family Guy, where the humour on those shows are very much adult- orientated. Cow and Chicken can be enjoyed by adults as well as kids but unlike say those cartoons, the characters do not swear or use profanities, in an attempt to generate audience laughs. The show was made up of say quick 10-15 minute sketches/situations involving both Cow and Chicken or either of them, as well as a little spin-off entitled: 'I am Weasel' featuring weasel and I. R Baboon which was okay but it was not as brilliant as the episodes featuring Cow and Chicken.

Cow and Chicken was very underrated and I would say under appreciated by many cartoon fans, especially those who are die-hard Hanna Barbera fans because they expected this cartoon to resemble something like the Flintstones, Hong Kong Fooey or those other classics. Yes the gross out humour can put certain people off, but if you can look beyond that and enjoy and laugh along with the silly antics and jokes, then you'll see for yourself what an interesting cartoon this really is.

Overall, this was and still is great fun to watch.

this was the most odd cartoon on cartoon network when cartoons were enjoyable
slimshady562323 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Cow and Chicken is an interestingly strange cartoon about a Cow and Chicken with 2 human parents, their heads are never shown, but it's quite obvoius they are just a pair of legs and the infamous Red Guy, who is a red devil like character who constantly follows Cow and Chicken and usually has a different name (usually a pun about him having no pants) in every episode, and wearing something different (with no pants of course).

The cartoon is completely odd and is full of really random episodes, the voices on the show are really over the top and crazy and the drawing style is completely over the top at times.

The humor is mostly butt jokes, or something hilariuosly stupid a bit like Ren and Stimpy.

If you like crazy, stupid and gross moments, you will like this show.

Mamma had a chicken Mamma had a cow. If I was Dad, I would care how!

Warning: Spoilers
Cow and Chicken is one of the sickest and most disturbing cartoons I have ever seen. No wonder I love it! It's almost up there with the Ren & Stimpy Show. I love the Red Guy, he's funny. I also like it's spin off, I Am Weasel. It's very creative and original. I wonder where David Feiss came up with this idea. This show is worth a look (if you can find it on Cartoon Network).

Sometimes goes too far but in my generation, it was okay.
rasheedthomas-6830611 March 2017
This is not a cartoon that most kids or adults would enjoy today because it could be offensive. But everything else about this cartoon was pretty darn good! It's like the jokes just never stop coming in each episode! It's as if that creator didn't care how far he could go to make a funny cartoon and still enjoyable today. At least to me! This is indeed worth the watch and I can only hope something in the future comes to past!

A very crappy version of Rocko's Modern Life
Jemarus3 September 2006
Why do people actually like this show? It's so stupid! It makes no sense at all, so because of that, I rarely found any of its antics funny at all. The characters all act like idiots, and they all do unbelievably stupid things that makes the show another turnoff. Plus, the animation is disgusting, which makes me loathe the show furthermore. I'll admit, some of the plots were interesting, but all in all, though I hate this show and am glad it got canceled. This show is just like other shows, like the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, which are causing children to get addicted to crap like this, and this is exactly why the quality of television is declining. Stupid shows like this mean nothing and are just corrupting good, quality TV. If you want to watch shows with characters who do stupid things, but yet its still of good quality and halfway decent, try Rocko's Modern Life and Beavis and Butthead. Both of those shows are MUCH better than Cow and Chicken and at least show some dignity in their production values. Do not watch Cow and Chicken, and do not petition it for a return! It is a dumb show that never should have aired. Strike that, maybe it was a good thing it aired, but only to serve as an example of what a bad cartoon is.

Cartoon Network had a Chicken, Cartoon Network had a Cow, I like this show I didn't care how!
SonicStuart23 May 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Cow and Chicken is a hilarious cartoon! The show is about a cow and a chicken who are brother and sister and they just do all these family life values! This show was hilarious because the jokes had a unique style of humor, at some points it be considered politically incorrect, but the jokes usually have a double-meaning that adults and kids will sure like. Another thing I like about this show is that the hilarious Charles Adler does the voice of both Cow and Chicken and The Red Guy who plays different roles in every episode and plus he started coming in the new I Am Weasel episodes when Weasel and Baboon were more together. From 1997-1999, Cow and Chicken showed two episodes of their show and then showed one episode of I Am Weasel, then in mid-1999, I Am Weasel and I. R. Baboon got their own show and both shows went from there on out. This show was one of the successful shows on Cartoon Network and one of the first three Cartoon Cartoons Shows along with Johnny Bravo and Dexter's Laboratory. The only one thing I had a question about this show is that why do they just show Cow and Chicken's Mom and Dad's legs? I really don't know why! Other than that very funny.

It's decent, but cartoon network has made better shows.
kumargopinath20 September 2013
I'll watch this show occasionally. It's not awful like the problem solverz but it's also not amazing like tom and jerry. It's just okay. Most of the characters are unpleasant to look at at(other than mom,dad and chicken) and the animation is nothing special either. Some of the time, the jokes are hilarious, but other times they are just disgusting and unfunny. The show is also kind of a rip off of ren and stimpy(like many other 90s cartoons). Most of the characters have no personalities, but my favorite character is the red guy(however,I am not a fan of him showing his butt all the time). So overall, this show is probably one of the worst cartoon cartoons, but it's still pretty decent.

Cow and Chicken
jboothmillard30 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
When it was on CITV and Cartoon Network, this was one of the funniest and one of my watchable cartoons. Two parents, who you never see the faces of have a cow for a daughter and a chicken for a son. Cow and Chicken have many weird and wonderful small adventure like episodes either to do with their lives or to change it. Most of the episodes are dominated sometimes by the really weird character called, The Red Guy, he looks like the devil with a big arse. That's one of the things I like about the cartoon, their use of the arse. The Red Guy, Cow, and even Pork Butts for dinner! Very funny and very entertaining animation, possibly from the makers of Ed, Ed 'n' Eddy. It was nominated for 2 Emmys, both for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming One Hour or Less). Very good!

the third cartoon network show is Cow and Chicken this is the first cartoon network show that i really hated, the reason is very simple; i don't like shows that try to be entertaining by using a combination of weird, random, and pointless, i also don't consider it funny,

I mean a COW AND A CHICKEN are siblings, you can only see the lower part of their parents bodies and their cousin is a boneless chicken,

There are lots of other weird, ugly characters but they don't appear that often, the animation of this show is really bad as well

The Thing i hate most about this show is that in many episodes cow and chicken can be seen eating PIG BUTTS that is just disgusting and really not funny

Cow is dumb as a stump, chicken is cynical, Flem and Earl are Fugly Mom and Dad are legs

The only like able character in this show is the red guy because he is funny and sarcastic also, what were the creators thinking when they wrote the episode "Buffalo Gals" how did this show get past the censors in the 1st place?!

Disturbing concept which has you in stitches..
Angelus28 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I loved this cartoon as a child, it was funny with some genuinely great characters and story lines. There were odd story lines such as 'Chicken' wondering if he is actually a female after supposedly laying an egg.

The show had some wonderful characters 'The Red Guy', 'Eal, Flem, Mom and Dad' as well as the 'Weasel and Baboon' who totally stole the show with their hilarious segment. Yes, the show has huge amounts of violence...But you know what...I grew up just fine...I loved Cow's alter-ego, 'Super Cow'....Today a show like this would probably never get a chance to air...but I loved this show and still remember it fondly.

One of the many spectacular cartoons of the great 90's.

Its just not funny anymore
japanman89136 August 2007
Cow and Chicken is one of the worst pieces of animation of its time. But later ones are much worse. The plot structure is abysmal, and the characters are annoying and just...I don't know, not so much weird, just unexplainably strange and obnoxious at the same time, in a non-good way. The episodes never really varied from the same gross out jokes and its a miracle this show lasted on cartoon network. I'm not a big fan of animation anymore, nor kids shows, because this is what they've become...Actually in that sense Cow and Chicken was actually alright, they did push limits, unlike the crap from today, but the show still lacked creativity, because the humor was all he same. And the red guy, you see him bouncing on his butt, and ten minutes later hes still bouncing on his butt, its just not funny anymore.

Warning: Spoilers
Cow and Chicken is one of the funniest cartoons of all time. Cow and Chicken is surrealistic and rude all at the same time, very much in the spirit of Ren and Stimpy. Like Ren and Stimpy, it is a show for all ages, not just kids or adults. All ages that are adventurous enough to watch it that is. Cow and Chicken are your normal everyday suburban family, with a few exceptions. Cow is a 600 lb cow, Chicken is a 4 lb chicken, Mom and Dad are a super intelligent pair of legs, and a big fat red guy keeps torturing them. The voice work by Charlie Adler, who does the voices of Cow, Chicken, and The Red Guy is just supurb, probably his best work ever. The stories are outragous, ranging from C&C creating perpetual energy from a kid's chemistry set, to discovering a strange and surrealistic "laughing puddle", to becoming plastic surgeons for their grade school. The show was created by David Feiss as part of Hanna-Barberra's attempt to recreate their cartoon heydays of the 60's. Unfortunately, the show stopped production in 1999 and no new episodes are being planned right now. But with Cartoon Network expanding gloabally, the popularity of the show is growing, and with that growth comes the possibility that new episodes will be produced. If you are a fan of the cartoon Ren and Stimpy or the show Monty Python, you will probably love Cow and Chicken. The show "I Am Weasel" was also created by David Feiss and is a nearly identical show to Cow and Chicken.

Not Safe for TV (Anymore...)
smetin16 March 2017
I loved cow and chicken as a child. When someone gave me the complete collection on DVD I had to re-live my childhood. Boy oh boy, this was a great idea. It brought back so many memories of me as a child watching cartoon network after I finished my school homework and on the weekend mornings!

As for the show itself, I am personally amazed I was allowed to watch this as a child. It's comedy rested with its vulgarity. When you look at the characters you can sense they don't wash very often and enjoy rolling in their own physical and verbal filth. It was funny for me, but I am sure many people would disagree.

Much of the comedy came from stupidity too. When your grandparents refer to the TV as the "idiot box", you will understand why they think this when you watch this cartoon. I am amazed this was allowed to air at the time. It would certainly not pass today's standards. However, I am glad it is a part of cartoon history. It comes from a time with fewer restrictions and more creative freedom than today. I thoroughly enjoyed watching these episodes again and I am sure others will agree. After all, "dad was proud...he didn't care how!"

How could I ever have forgotten this show?
TheLittleSongbird18 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I adore animation, and today I was trying to refresh my memory on any good cartoons I loved during my childhood that I had forgotten to this point. Suddenly, it hit me...Cow and Chicken. How could I ever have forgotten it? Revisiting it after such a long time, I remember exactly why I loved it so much, it was one of my favourite shows on Cartoon Network along with Dexter's Laboratory and Powerpuff Girls. It was sick and gross I give you that, but in a somewhat good way, for it is very original and funny as well. The animation is good, the theme tune is memorable, the stories are interesting, the voice acting is excellent and it is funny. Mix some interesting and even lovable characters, and you have a truly great and I think underrated show. Cow is adorable, Chicken makes a lot of mistakes but we love him anyway for it and the Red Guy is often hilarious. All in all, this is a great show. 9/10 Bethany Cox.

"Cow and Chicken" was a great show from my Childhood.
GravityLoudHouseLover19 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Hey Guys RegularShow1 here again and today I'm going to talk about one of Cartoon Network's original "Cartoon Cartoons" called "Cow and Chicken". The show was about Cow and her brother Chicken getting into mis adventures. The other characters include The Red Guy who was originally called "The Devil" who is always trying to harm or scam Cow and Chicken. Then there Flem and Earl who are Chicken's best friends and then there Cow and Chicken's parent who are Mom and Dad. The show originally ran on Cartoon Network from July 15,1997 to July 24,1999.The show was Created by David Feiss and featured the voices of Charlie Alder, Dee Bradley Baker, Candi Milo, Howard Morris and Dan Castellaneta. The show also had a spin-off show called "I Am Weasel" which ran on Cartoon Network from July 15,1997 to March 2,2000. BOTTTOM LINE Cow and Chicken was a great show from childhood. Anyway I'm giving "Cow and Chicken" a 10 out of 10 stars. Anyway I'm RegularShow1 and have a nice day. BYE :)

Never liked this cartoon
pollypocketfan-7391411 June 2021
Even when I was young I hated it. The animation is terrible and has some of the ugliest character designs ever. So much stuff about this show bothers me. The gross out humor wasn't funny here and it's trying to copy the success of Ren And Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life (which I do like Rocko and that's adult humor in a kids show done right). Every episode of this show makes me cringe in some ways and don't even get me started on the Buffalo Gals episode of this series. I even disliked this show even more when I saw that Seth MacFarlane worked on episodes of this (which I can't stand Seth MacFarlane's work).

Cow and Chicken was a great cartoon. It can be very gross at times, but that just adds to how funny the show is. All the characters are hilarious, especially the Red Guy. It's a shame it's over. It was pretty good. At least I got reruns.

If Mentally Retarded Aliens Made a Cartoon
monstermonkeyhead18 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is the most wonderfully demented cartoon I've had the great fortune to come across. One might say it is hiney obsessed, since many characters flaunt their naked butt cheeks shamelessly. The only way this cartoon could be more perverted would be if feces and sexual organs were involved. The suggestion is certainly there in the forms of sausages, Cow's spurting udders, and the gay-to-the-tenth-power Red Guy. Superhero of voice actors, Charles Adler, is an awe-inspiring nutjob here.

I can sorta see why this hasn't been released on DVD in the U. S. It's not exactly for kids. So, I'd recommend splurging on a multi-region DVD player solely for this series. It's totally worth it. Plus, you get I Am Weasel, which is also awesome.

I thank the cartoon gods for this show.

Disturbing concept which could have been so much more.
Animany9421 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I have heard many lukewarm attitudes towards Cow & Chicken, and it is primarily because of its short episodes due to being cut short by I. M. Weasel.

But personally I think Cow and Chicken was the better show, perhaps because I didn't get the I.M, Weasel show. Anyway, look at Cow & Chicken, it's freakin' bizarre! The titular characters are somehow siblings, who have humans as their parents, who turn out to be only a talking pair of legs! That is beyond strange!

More oddities are about to come, because they encounter more disturbing characters and expiriences throughout the series. Oh, did I mention that the cow is also a spanish speaking superhero and the chicken has a cousin without any bones in his entire body, yeah, that's what we're dealing with.

The pilot episode of the series seriously creeped me out! The Devil, aka The Red Guy, was originally a sadistic madman (satan) set to torture our main characters. I am not sure if I would have liked to see more of that Red Guy and that kind of content was, luckily I guess, toned down in the final series.

In conclusion, If Cow & Chicken was given its original dark and explicit content it would have made one heck of an unpleasant show and what we got was still twisted and disturbing, but in a funny way. If it had got its completely own show without sharing screen-time with another show, it could easily have been up there with Ren & Stimpy in terms of being twisted and entertaining.

Wildly uneven. When it was good, it was great...but often, it just fell flat.
planktonrules27 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
As a crazy adult who still loves to watch cartoons, "Cow and Chicken" is one of the most enigmatic of the new crop of toons. While I generally think cartoons in the 1990s and beyond are far better than they used to be in the 1960s-80s, I can't strongly embrace this show. Part of the problem is that the plots are wildly uneven. When funny, it's among the best cartoons but often the show just seems to ramble and seem, occasionally, a bit pointless. Plus, there were just limitations to the characters themselves. You can only take Cow's horrid and ear-splitting voice for so long and they needed to have some villain other than the ever-present Mr, Heinie. All in all, a show that just never seemed to hit its stride--even with its other cartoon characters such as I. M. Weasel and his friends. I really wanted to like this one...but I just couldn't after seeing many episodes.

¡Super Cow al rescate!

Warning: Spoilers
I love this cartoon. It's one of a number of delightful and ingenious cartoons I first discovered a couple years ago on the Cartoon Network. The humor is absolutely zany. There are a lot of wonderfully quirky things about the show, but I think one of my favorites is the incongruous endings. The episodes will often end immediately at the point of climax. The first few times this happened, I sat there for a second or two, confused and disturbed and caught by surprise, and then I laughed uncontrollably. The two episodes I remember most distinctly in which this happens are the one where Chicken has his neck stretched so he'll be tall enough to ride the rollercoaster, and the episode where Chicken eats too much "caffeine flakes(?)" cereal, and eventually ends up without any feathers and horrifically bloated after being shot full of Cow's milk to help him sleep.

I also recommend Dexter's Laboratory, and 2 Stupid Dogs/Secret Squirrel, both of which are cuter than Cow and Chicken (and all three of which I think are more humorous and clever than Johnny Bravo or the Powerpuff Girls, although the latter are in the same eye-pleasing visual style). The I. M. Weasel show is ok too, but I like the Cow and Chicken characters better. The "naked Red Guy" makes appearances on I. M. Weasel as well.

Over at the user reviews of 2 Stupid Dogs, many people were comparing it to Ren & Stimpy, but Cow and Chicken is much more similar to R&S in its visual style and gross-out-ness. And in my opinion it's a lot funnier. Cow and Chicken is probably the most irreverent of all the shows on the Cartoon Network, and I'd personally have reserves about letting my kids watch it if I had kids. And furthermore, I don't know if most can appreciate a lot of the satire and outright ridiculousness as much as older "kids" can.

'Shut yer pie hole' and see these shows!

This show was genius. Yes, there was a red guy who loved to walk on his butt cheeks. Every episode he had a new name that alluded to his pantlessness. I remember "Lackslacks" and "Rear Admiral Floyd". I think Charlie Adler is a vocal genius, and I was a huge fan of this show. Wish it still ran. Other characters included cousin boneless, who was, of course, a boneless chicken, and the parents, who didn't seem to possess upper bodies. Ah, and Cow's alter-ego "SuperCow", who spoke only Spanish. The strangest things were in that show, such as the red guy "waxing the dinghy". It almost seemed like an innuendo, but they wouldn't put that in a kid's show...Would they?
