Rumored to be in the mix for several festivals, Francis Ford Coppola’s expensive, long-gestating “Megalopolis” is expected to premier at the Cannes Film Festival this May. According to Deadline’s The Dish, Coppola’s film, which he funded himself to the tune of over 100 million, will play in competition on the Croisette on May 17.
A film Coppola had conceived of back in the 1970s, around the era of “Apocalypse Now,” the epic film started resurfacing in the late aughts but only became a reality in the last two years.

About half of the “Top Chef” contestants made variations of the same thing this week, “which is wild to me,” said Kristen Kish in the third episode of “The Dish with Kish,” which followed the “Top Chef” episode “Take it Cheesy” in which the cheftestants, naturally, made cheese dishes. But considering how many different ways there are to highlight cheese as an ingredient, it was surprising how many of them chose to make croquettes. So that’s what Kish did for her after show. Watch it above.

Exclusive: Following his stunning ouster from Verve, the agency he co-founded in 2010, where he’d most recently served as CEO, veteran agent Bill Weinstein looks to have found his next destination, as multiple sources tell Deadline that he’s in talks to join Paradigm.
Paradigm declined comment, and Weinstein couldn’t be reached, but we’ll update this story with his statement if and when it comes in.
As we were first to report, it had previously been speculated that Weinstein would be setting up his own shop named Novo, and bring the Verve trio of Devon Schiff, Matthew Doyle and Jake Dillman with him following their own departures from the agency. Whether any or all of them will be joining him at Paradigm isn’t yet clear.

Maybe not. The Dish hears that he is circling cast for a second season of the Netflix and A24 show, and he’s got some beefcake thesps circling.
We hear that the storyline this time will revolve around two feuding couples. May December revelation Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny, a revelation in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, are being courted to play one of the couples. Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway are the other names we hear. The latter meshed nicely in both the Ang Lee-directed Brokeback Mountain and the Ed Zwick-directed Love & Other Drugs.

The role was previously played by Pedro Pascal in the 2020 movie Wonder Woman 1984.
It’s not clear if Sean Gunn’s Maxwell Lord will make a cameo in brother Gunn’s Superman: Legacy which will go into production next year. The character, as I hear it, will be referenced in the background of Legacy but will appear in future DC projects. A similar motif will occur for other characters in the new DC Universe, the first phase which is named Gods and Monsters: Chapter One. Stay tuned.

Exclusive: After his World War I epic All Quiet on the Western Front took home the Oscar for Best International Feature Film and three others, director Edward Berger might have found his follow-up project with one of the biggest action heroes of this century. Sources tell Deadline that Universal Pictures is looking to get back in business with Jason Bourne as the studio has begun early development on a new installment in the Jason Bourne franchise and that Berger is in negotiations to oversee development and direct the pic.
Universal could not be reached for comment, and insiders close to the project say there is no script at this time and that it is still in early development. That said, Berger has been in high demand following All Quiet‘s big night at the Oscars, and his potential involvement with the project has all parties very excited about the future of Bourne.

Exclusive: Article updated at 2:54Pm Screenings are being set up this week for streamers Amazon Prime Video, Apple and Netflix to check out and potentially acquire Warner Bros’ axed Looney Tunes movie Coyote vs. Acme after the studio’s phone ran off the hook the entire weekend from angry filmmakers and talent reps over their third feature film kill after Batgirl and Scoob Holiday Haunt!
The more egregious Hollywood sin with Coyote vs. Acme is that it’s a finished film was intended for a theatrical release, while the other two movies were still in the works.
Of those kicking the tires, even though no deals have been drafted, I hear Amazon is a leading contender given the fact that Courtenay Valenti, the Head of Film, Streaming and Theatrical for Amazon Studios and MGM, was a big champion and linchpin for the movie while she was President of Production...

Sources tell us that Sundance is looking for another city to host future editions of the indie film festival and market. Already, Sundance has a contract with Park City city hall to remain in the ski town until at least 2026.

Exclusive: Clues point to Eddie Murphy following in Peter Sellers and Steve Martin’s formidable footsteps, circling the role of inept inspector Clouseau in a new Pink Panther movie in development at the Amazon-owned MGM, multiple sources confirm to Deadline.
The iconic comedy-mystery franchise created for MGM by Blake Edwards has so far spanned 11 films and numerous fiberglass insulation commercials.
Jeff Fowler (Sonic the Hedgehog) will direct the new film from a screenplay by Chris Bremner. Dan Lin, Julie Andrews, Larry Mirisch and Jonathan Eirich are aboard as producers. Murphy takes on the Clouseau role that Sellers originated in the ‘60s. A source close to Murphy described the project as a natural fit for the actor, who has long admired the comedic performances of Sellers.

Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon is weighing a potential Cannes 2023 world premiere, as previously tipped in Deadline’s The Dish in July of last year, we can confirm.
The notion of a Cannes bow for the Western crime drama, marking Scorsese’s latest of many collaborations with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, remains “highly speculative,” one source tells us. And it’s not clear whether the film would play in competition, should it touch down in the South of France. But this would mark Scorsese’s first Cannes debut in decades, on the heels of such iconic titles as After Hours and Taxi Driver, which respectively claimed the Best Director prize and the Palme d’Or.

As predicted, Roadshow’s The Dry has crossed the $20 million mark.
This means the Robert Connolly film, based on Jane Harper’s best selling novel, is now the 14th highest grossing Australian film of all time, surpassing titles such as The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Muriel’s Wedding and The Dish (not adjusting for inflation).
And the mystery drama is likely to still have life in it, with star and producer Eric Bana doing a set of Q&As screenings this week.
“The astounding success of The Dry confirms what Roadshow has always known, that there will always be an appetite for quality Australian productions which can without a doubt rival their Hollywood counterparts at the box office,” said Roadshow Films CEO Joel Pearlman.
“We will continue working with local industry and our partners in exhibition to deliver these crowd favourites to the big screen.”

In his incredible forty year career, legendary Northern Ireland and New Zealand raised actor Sam Neill has starred in a multitude of both mainstream movies and independent films, spanning continents, characters, genres and budget sizes. His latest film, Sweet Country, is an Australian frontier drama inspired by true events that embraces traits from the Western genre.
Australian native Warwick Thornton adapts Steven McGregor and David Tranter’s screenplay which tells the tale of Aboriginal farmhand Sam Kelly (Hamilton Morris), who accidentally kills an irate white bigot tormenting his family. Kelly goes on the run from law enforcement which takes the shape of the affable Sergeant Fletcher (Bryan Brown), accompanied by his Good Samaritan employer Fred Smith (Neill) who wishes to guide Kelly home to safety.

If satellite dish porn were a thing, this sentimental account of Australia’s role in broadcasting the Apollo 11 moon landing would be the genre’s pièce de résistance
Making the follow-up film to one of the most beloved Australian comedies of all time, 1997’s The Castle, was never going to be easy for director Rob Sitch and his team of writers: himself, Santo Cilauro, Tom Gleisner and Jane Kennedy. They are the backbone of production company Working Dog, who have made several hit TV shows (including Frontline and Utopia) and a third, far less impressive feel-good film, the 2012 romcom Any Questions for Ben?
The Dish, an unashamedly sentimental account of Australia’s role in producing signals necessary to broadcast the Apollo 11 moon landing, is a very different kettle of fish to The Castle, being both a rose-tinted celebration of the past and a picture book-style history lesson.

Any list of must-watch films is likely to be so arbitrary and subjective that it buys plenty of arguments, and so it proves with the Taste of Cinema website.s compilation on Australian cinema.
Its selection of 20 Essential Australian Films You Need To Watch overlooks many classics and more than a few stand-outs of the past 30 years.
Writer Liam Clark, a film/literature/music student in Sydney, acknowledges the first-ever feature length film was The Story Of The Kelly Gang in 1906. He then observes, .Since then, antipodean auteurs of the screen have been weaving their imagerial visions into challenging portraits of Outback Australia, racism, crime and hauntingly beautiful stories..
The list omits everything produced before 1971 and there are some questionable choices.
His Essential 20: Strictly Ballroom (1992), Sweetie (1989), Mad Max (1979), Gallipoli (1981), Muriel.s Wedding (1994), Lantana (2001), Snowtown (2011), The Dish (2000), Candy (2006), Dogs in Space (1986), Somersault (2004), Shine (1986), The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the...

Even More Movies You Never Heard Of! continues at Trailers from Hell with screenwriter Josh Olson introducing "The Dish," starring Sam Neill, Australia's top-grossing film of 2000.This Rob Sitch-directed, Bill Forsyth-influenced semi-fictionalized dramedy based on Nasa's use of a radio telescope in New South Wales to beam images from the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing around the world. Much of the electronic prop equipment on hand was actually used during the landing but was too heavy to ship back to the Us and ended up in the movie.

Actors who get lousy reviews usually ignore them or suffer in silence- but not Kevin Harrington.
The veteran actor was so incensed by a review by News Ltd..s Leigh Paatsch of the DVD of Cliffy, he vented on Facebook.
The ABC telemovie features Harrington as Cliff Young, who became an unlikely hero at the age of 61 when he won the 875km endurance race from Sydney to Melbourne..
In Saturday.s Daily Telegraph and Herald-Sun Paatsch dismissed it as a .dreadful telemovie that turns the ripping true story of the late ultra-marathon legend Cliff Young into a crap-tastic cartoon. How the ABC ever ponied up a commitment to this dim-witted affair beggars belief..
Paatsch advised readers who want the .real tale- much of which was ignored or changed by this TV calamity,. to read Julietta Jameson.s book Cliffy: The Cliff Young Story.
His verdict: .1 star, run the other way.

On this week's episode of popular game show Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation, host Shaun Micallef asked actor Josh Lawson how his latest film Any Questions for Ben? was performing.
"Tremendously well," said Lawson, who was dressed as Romeo as part of the episode's Shakespearean theme. "Yeah, no, it's doing very well."
"I should explain," said Micallef quickly to the viewers at home. "We did pre-record this at a point before the film had opened. Can we do the alternative just in case?"
"Of course," Lawson agreed.
"Josh, how is the film doing?"
"People hate it," said Lawson promptly. "And they seem to specifically hate me in it."
The reality seems to lie somewhere in between these two extremes for the latest comedy from Working Dog. Audiences aren't united in their hatred of Any Questions for Ben?, but then again, not many of them have seen it.

When your script calls for "a burly Patrick Warburton type", who better to cast than, er, Patrick Warburton? Clearly the answer is "nobody", and lo and behold, Warburton has just joined the cast of Seth McFarlane's Ted. We're calling shenanigans on this film.Warburton is no stranger to McFarlane, having worked with him on Family Guy for years, where he plays the Grinch-vanquishing Joe Swanson. As an on-screen presence, he's still probably most recognisable as Elaine's idiot semi-regular on/off boyfriend David Puddey in Seinfeld, but readers may also recognise him as The Tick or from his role as a Nasa bod in The Dish.In Ted, he'll be playing the "sexually confused co-worker" of Mark Wahlberg's John, at their place of business, Enterprise Car Rentals. John has his own problems, in the form of the titular Ted, his beloved toy bear from childhood who came to life when John's wish was granted.

With a reputation for taking chances on relatively unknown filmmakers, the SXSW panel of judges carefully picked 130 films from 1,792 feature-length film submissions, (1,323 U.S. and 469 international). The program consists of 60 World Premieres, 12 North American Premieres and 16 U.S. Premieres.
The main competition categories return with eight Narrative Features, and eight Documentary Features, both competing for their respective Grand Jury Prize. New for films in competition this year, are awards for screenplay, editing, cinematography, music, and acting.
(The Midnighters and SXFantastic feature sections, along with the short film program, will be announced next week.)
Here are a few of the Features to be screened, among many others.

If you're American or British you're probably reading this and it's not technically Australia Day yet (26 of January), but that's my reward for Living In The Future! Time zones be damned! America celebrates the day that British people came to their land with Turkey and family get togethers and being thankful for good health. Australia celebrates by having a bbq and sitting in lawn chairs and wading pools. We're classy like that!

There are some titles on there that you non-Aussies will recognise like Samson & Delilah, Wolf Creek, Mary and Max and Australia, but there's also plenty you have probably never heard a single word about. No matter whether...
