Making a pizza in outer space looks like it would be a rather difficult task. For one thing you’d have to make certain that your ingredients don’t go floating around, and then you’d have to make sure that they adhere to the dough in order to keep them from flying around the module. Then it seems like they might not get to cook them since fire or too much heat inside this space seems like it wouldn’t be a good idea. After that realization is the fact that everything on the pizza would need to be glued down by sauce

Aliens. UFOs. Many theories abound as to what they are and where they come from. Outer space? Time travelers? Alternate dimensions? Satanic entities undermining Christian faith by deceiving people into believing there might actually be life on other planets? Landing in that category of “oh my god, is this still on?”, ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” continues to plug along, five seasons in despite tepid reviews throughout and dwindling viewers. Still, the hardcore Marvel fans remain, happy to press on through the slog of the upcoming season for the simple payoff of being able to exist in that universe.
As has been the case with many of Marvel’s television shows, the quality of ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ has very rarely (if, honestly, ever) lived up to the quality of the films.

It's unclear right now whether director J. Gary Gray will continue directing the Fast And Furious franchise, but I hope he does after hearing what he had to say about a potential sequel in space (via Slashfilm):
“Outer space? Listen, I wouldn’t rule anything with this franchise. When I read submarine I’m like ‘Ok, anything’s possible’. [Laughs] You never know. I haven’t read “Dom on Mars” yet but again, you just never know.”
It sounds crazy, then again it probably would've sounded crazy that this film franchise would still be relevant in 2017 if you had told someone shortly after the first screening of Tokyo Drift, so I'm holding out hope. Maybe they can do some weird mashup of Pitch Black and Fast And Furious? I'm just spitballing here, how do you feel about a space sequel to the franchise?...

It’s crazy to look back on those early Fast & Furious films and see how far things have come. The series originally started off as an underground streetracing one with an extra dose of crime strewn about, and four films later ventured into the more spy espionage genre before going full-blown superhero movie on us.
Given how much things have escalated in the 15 or so years since the first film, it’s easy to joke about the franchise eventually heading into space. After all, what’s the most silly and ridiculous ways to escalate things even more? While we joke about it, we also have a tendency to pass it off without Seriously looking into it.
When asked about this potential direction, Fate of the Furious director F. Gary Gray didn’t really rule it out as a possibility.

Not unlike James Wan before him, Straight Outta Compton filmmaker F. Gary Gray faced a monumental task upon taking the reins on The Fate of the Furious.
The sequel formerly known as Fast 8 shouldered a particular weight of expectation prior to release because of Paul Walker’s tragic, untimely death – even if Universal considered incorporating a CG Brian O’Connor a la Peter Cushing in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – and it’s a testimony to Gray and his crew that The Fate of the Furious managed to carve out a new chapter in Universal’s petrolhead franchise, all the while scooping up $1.16 billion at the worldwide box office.
It’s the beginning of an all-new and seemingly final trilogy of Fast and Furious movies at the studio – barring those standalone spinoffs, of course – what with plans in place for the as-yet-untitled Fast 9 and Furious 10 across 2019 and 2021, respectively.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, and to paraphrase those renowned seventies scholars the Brady Bunch, “When it’s time to change then it’s time to change.”
While I’ve tried my hardest to slowly sneak those changes in, it’s gotten to the point where we’ll need to do something more drastic if the few of you reading the Weekend Warrior on a weekly basis actually want it to remain coming to you on a weekly basis. Because of that, we’re going to try something different by not throwing in as much independent limited releases for those checking the column out, and making the column a little more focused at least for the time being. When you’re a director like Ridley Scott, you can pretty much get any actor you want for your movies, and for his last three or four movies, he’s assemble some amazing ensembles. That was definitely true for Prometheus and The Martian, and just as much for his Prometheus sequel, Alien: Covenant.
Of course, Michael Fassbender is back as the synthetic android David (and as a second synthetic named Walter), and actress Katherine Waterston (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) takes on the strong female role of Daniels. Could Fast & Furious 9 be heading to space? "You never know," teases director F. Gary Gray...
The plots of the Fast & Furious films have become so outlandish that the idea of Dom and his fambly setting off for a space adventure (where no one can hear you scream "I live my life a quarter mile at a time!") has gone from 'lol' to 'maybe'.
“Outer space? Listen, I wouldn’t rule out anything with this franchise," admitted Fast 8 director F. Gary Gray in an interview with Screen Rant. "When I read submarine I’m like ‘Ok, anything’s possible’. [Laughs] You never know. I haven’t read 'Dom on Mars' yet but again, you just never know.”
Writer Chris Morgan also refused to rule out the possibility of Vin and The Rock taking out some bad guys in Zero-g, if the circumstances were right.
“Look, I get all versions of that question.

This summer, Luc Besson returns to blockbuster sci-fi with “Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets.” The film brings with it a pretty impressive cast with Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Rihanna, Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, and more, but many might be asking how the director could possibly top the wonderfully, over-the-top delight of “The Fifth Element.” Well, according to DeHaan, ‘Valerian’ takes Besson’s aesthetic to the next level.

Daniel Clowes’ Wilson is now playing in theaters across the country and hopefully, those who’ve had a chance to see it still have some questions about how the filmmakers and cast captured the tone of Clowes’ graphic novel so well. (It didn’t hurt that Clowes adapted it into a movie himself.)
It is director Craig Johnson’s third film, following 2009’s True Adolescents and 2014’s The Skeleton Twins, starring Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, which won a screenplay at Sundance that year.
In the movie, Woody Harrelson plays the title character, a cantankerous and unfiltered loner who tries hard to be social but ends up putting those he interacts with off. When he tries to reconnect with his ex-wife Pippy (Laura Dern), he finds out that he had a baby daughter she gave up for adoption. The two of them go look for their now teen daughter Claire...

It might not be surprising that Jessica Chastaine’s upcoming Holocaust drama The Zookeeper’s Wife was directed by a woman as much as it was directed by New Zealand filmmaker Niki Caro, who once again proves herself capable of working with an international cast on a scale that’s far bigger than her earlier films, including Whale Rider.
Adapted from the novel by Diane Ackerman, it stars Chastaine as Antonina Zabinska, wife of the zoologist and owner of the biggest zoo in Warsaw, Poland, which is devastated when the Nazis invade in 1939. Trying to make lemonade out of the lemons delivered to them by the Nazis liquidating their zoo, Antonina and her husband Jan (Johan Heldenbergh) come up with a plan to save the Jews from Warsaw who are being herded into ghettos, and being treated horribly. David Ellison first created Skydance Productions for his own 2005 directorial debut When All Else Fails, but Skydance Media really started making waves in 2010 when it teamed up with Paramount Pictures for the Coen Brothers Western True Grit.
It went on to become the highest grossing Western ever and cemented the relationship between Skydance Media with Paramount who teamed-up for World War Z, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and other franchises like Star Trek and 2014’s Terminator: Genisys. (Obviously, some of those movies did better than others.)
For his new science fiction movie Life, based on an idea that Ellison came up with, he’s teamed with Sony Pictures, bringing together a cast that includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson as part of the crew of the International Space Station who must examine a sample of life that’s been brought back from Mars.

Hollywood writing duos are a long-standing tradition that’s continued through the years and there have been even more recently, but Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have created a particularly creative knack for tackling genre and franchise.
I personally met the duo on the set of their 2009 movie Zombieland many years ago, and watched them taking on other big genre movies including G.I. Joe: Retaliation, before working with Ryan Reynolds to develop a Deadpool movie that was hugely popular with superhero fans.
Their new movie Life is an outer space thriller also starring their Deadpool collaborator Ryan Reynolds, along with Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson as half the crew of the International Space Station, who have recovered a sample of life from the surface of Mars. It’s a single cell organism that’s been frozen, but when they try to revive it, it starts growing, becoming stronger and more violent towards its would-be captors.

For nearly thirty years, Daniel Clowes has been at the forefront of San Francisco’s second wave of underground cartoonists, first making waves with his anthology comic, Eightball, which ran for fifteen years. One of the many serialized comic stories in that comic was Ghost World, which was turned into a popular indie movie in 2001, directed by Terry Zwigoff and starring a very, very young Scarlett Johansson.
Five years later, Zwigoff and Clowes reteamed for the comedy Art School Confidential, also based on an Eightball story, and around the same time, Clowes shifted away from Eightball to writing and drawing stand-alone graphic novels.
One of those graphic novels was 2010’s Wilson, which Clowes has now adapted into a movie starring Woody Harrelson as its cantankerous title character, who goes on a quest to reconnect with his ex-wife Pippy (Laura Dern), and find their now-teen daughter Claire (Isabella Amara). It’s...

“In space, no one can hear you scream.” The often-quoted but terrifyingly true tagline for 1979’s Alien pretty much sums up how scary space is. Space isn’t just vast, it’s also completely hostile to human existence. While our best technology can get us into space, we’ve seen countless films explore what happens when that technology fails. For almost twenty years, Judy Greer has been one of the busiest actresses in every medium, whether it’s appearing in popular comedies like 13 Going on 30, Oscar fare like Alexander Payne’s The Descendants, or even unrecognizable as the ape Cornelia in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and its upcoming sequel. Maybe Greer’s largest pop came when she was cast to play Will Arnett’s cross-eyed secretary Kitty Sanchez in Mitch Hurwitz’s popular show Arrested Development, and for the past few years, she’s also provided the voices for a couple characters on the popular animated show Archer.
Either way, it’s unlikely you haven’t seen Greer in hundreds of movies or TV shows over the years, as she keeps very, very busy, and yet somehow, despite that busy schedule, Greer has found time to put together a book and make her directorial debut with a comedy starring Common.

Swedish director Daniel Espinosa might have been another foreign filmmaker working in obscurity until his film Snabba Cash (Easy Money) caught the attention of Hollywood, and he was hired to helm Safe House, an action-thriller starring Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington that became a huge hit over here. (Espinosa’s next movie, the psychological thriller Child 44, failed to find much of an audience, more due to poor marketing than anything else.)
Now, Espinosa is back with Life, an outer space thriller starring Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and more, which looks at what it might be like if life was discovered on Mars, and what might happen if that life turns out to be hostile. With the upcoming Power Rangers and Ghost in the Shell movies coming out over the next few weeks, one might want to take a look back to the '70s and '80s as a time when Asian productions were frequently brought to American shores.
One of the originators of that tradition was the cartoon Star Blazers, based on the Japanese anime Space Battleship Yamato.
The Star Blazers animated show only had three seasons that ran from 1979 to 1984, but it created an avid fanbase with the related toys, comic books and other iterations, all of which followed the adventures of the crew of the Argo, an old battleship turned into a starship that is used to fight against the forces of Gamilon, a distant planet that attacks earth sometime in the future.

While Marvel Studios and Warners/Dceu were busy fighting over which of their superhero battle movies was better, the comic book movie that really had the biggest impact of 2016 was probably 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds, which went from an R-rated action-comedy that no one wanted to make to the global smash of a movie that grossed nearly $800 million worldwide.
A lot of that had to do with Ryan Reynolds' dedication to the character and his screenwriting collaborators Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland), who continued to grind away at writing the best script possible for Marvel’s snarkiest superhero.
After Deadpool became such a hugely popular hit, putting Reynolds back in the spandex was a given, and in the past few months, we’ve started to hear what is planned for Deadpool 2 with John Wick’s David Leitch directing, Drew Goddard (The Martian) helping...

Did Republic’s serial-makers lose their marbles? This is an endurance test of a thriller, with 12 chapters that refuse to advance a story beyond the same repetitive ambushes and fistfights. It’s got monsters in the form of giant crawfish bred to… well, bred for almost no reason at all. With Phyllis Coates and Myron Healey. I tell you, watching this feels like watching an endless loop. But hey, it’s quite handsomely filmed!

It’s just a few weeks until this year’s Oscars, which means the Hollywood machine is running out of steam to provide “new angles” on various awards season campaigns and Oscar bloggers are trying to squeeze traffic out of last-minute prediction shifts. It’s fitting, then, that around this time every year we get a rather substantial update of one of the most comprehensive polls on the greatest films of all-time, not simply the November/December releases with the biggest marketing budget come Academy Awards time.

No one knows more about the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- both what's come already and what's still to come through 2019 and beyond -- than Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Last April, Et traveled to Atlanta, Georgia's Pinewood Studios, which had been transformed into a galaxy far, far away to film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and although Feige couldn't chaperone the entire set visit (both he and Pinewood were pulling double duty that day for Spider-Man: Homecoming), the McU's secret keeper sat down with reporters in their concept-art adorned "war room" for an hour-long conversation about all things Guardians.
As Feige's word is gospel in the Marvel fan community, we present the entire Q&A -- often illuminating, more than occasionally calculatedly coy -- in full. The discussion, as all talk of GotG2 would, should, and will, began with Baby Groot.

Why hasn't Groot gotten bigger? What's the story behind that?

A look-back at the previous attempts to bring Archie to TV before they got it right with Riverdale...
When Riverdale premieres on the CW on January 26th, it will mark a milestone for Archie Comics - the first time in the company's 75-year history that its characters will truly shine on television. A mix of gleefully ridiculous kitsch with standout performances and some truly smart writing, the series is poised to be 2017's breakout TV hit.
See related Shane Black: a career retrospective Zack Snyder interview: Batman V Superman
That said, it took a while for Archie to get to this point. There have been many attempts to bring Archie and his friends to TV before, but these all suffered for either being shoddily animated (the various 1960s cartoons), misguided (1990's Archie: To Riverdale and Back Again), or just plain, um, weird (the X-Files cash-in Archie's Weird Mysteries...

Alan Menken (Buena Vista Pictures/Courtesy of Everett Collection)
By: Carson Blackwelder

Alan Menken is far from being a newcomer at the Oscars, but this year the composer could be nominated or even win for a venture into the new territory of R-rated films. Having usually created award-worthy songs for Disney, Menken connected himself with a more mature project with Sausage Party and stands to win an Oscar for a song in a movie about weenies and buns.
This year Sausage Party’s “The Great Beyond” (which would be shared with Chris Lennertz for the animated venture written by and starring Seth Rogen) is considered a major threat in the best original song race, according to this site’s namesake Scott Feinberg. In the past, Menken has been nominated a grand total of 19 times with eight of those being wins. Let’s take a look back at what...

Need to catch up? Check out last week’s This Is Us recap here.
When the family air conditioner breaks this week during This Is Us‘ flashback storyline, Jack innocently suggests that the family head to the public pool for a little relief from the heat.
Meanwhile, I suggest that Rebecca check the cooler to make sure Jack is sticking to his promise not to drink. Because I have to believe that no one in his or her right, sober mind would think that a day-long trip to a community swimming hole with three kids is a good — much less relaxing — idea.

This week in the Dancing With the Stars ballroom, the competitors performed some seriously sexy Latin routines â. and host Erin Andrews followed suit on the sidelines, wearing a daring Alamour The Label gown with (two!) thigh-high slits and a deep V neckline.
Andrews told PeopleStyle that the burgundy number was “so comfortable to run around in” despite all the fashion tape used to keep the plunging halter in place. “Having two long slits on both sides of the legs, it was so easy to move in,” she added.

Not speaking. Walter and Paige? Kept apart by Paige’s new beau, Tim. Sylvester? Loyal only to Super Fun Guy.

I fell in love with Frank Oz’s Little Shop of Horrors before I even saw a single frame of the film in December 1986. My mom’s boyfriend at the time worked for the Warner Bros. distribution center in Illinois, and sometime in the fall, he brought home an advanced copy of the soundtrack to Oz’s adaptation of the popular off-Broadway show, which of course was originally based on Roger Corman’s 1960 horror movie that featured performances from the likes of Dick Miller and Jack Nicholson.
And as I spent countless hours laying on my bedroom floor, humming along to the different songs (and singing the swear words whenever I thought I could get away with it), Little Shop of Horrors transported me to a place where underdogs could overcome the odds, alien plants could sing and craved human blood, and Steve Martin was a demented motorcycle-riding dentist addicted...

I want to have my fun too, not just watch women." This is advice from one experimental filmmaker to another, but also a request from one spouse to another (the two are married). The Exquisite Corpus premiered at the 2015 Quinzaine des réalisateurs, but the film's raw materials come from disreputable, disposable skin flicks and stag films. While Tscherkassky continues his working method he calls "manufracture" (named after his 1985 film) that pulverizes and reconfigures just about every assumption of cinematic...
