I didn't think I could get too much of Potter until...
=G=5 November 2002
"I'm With Lucy", with Potter (Lucy) in every scene as an available NYC single who's dating five guys, goes round and round showing Potter in select situations with each of her suitors until - drum roll, please - she finally picks one...taa-daa! Rambling on and on sans story with a tad too much of the beautiful, wide-eyed, ever innocent and always tentative Potter, "....Lucy" begins to wear itself out for lack of a real story and real depth of character. A cute flick which gets a little too fluffy and sappy, "....Lucy" should make an okay watch for incurable romantics and Potter fans. (C)

a sweet story
guppyjaja14 September 2002
It looks like any other American romantic movies like those of Julia Roberts (Notting Hill) or Meg Ryan (you've got mail) but the story is a little bit original and we don't get lost at all! We expect the end but seeing this movie remains a time well-spent. Monica Potter deserves to be more famous. 7/10

chopped up rom-com
SnoopyStyle24 February 2020
Self-doubting Lucy (Monica Potter) gets dumped by her 'perfect' boyfriend. She becomes depressed and her sister Jo (Julianne Nicholson) pushes her to date. Barry (Henry Thomas), Luke (David Boreanaz), Bobby (Anthony LaPaglia), Doug (John Hannah), and Gabriel (Gael García Bernal) are five of those men.

The structure of this film is interesting, inventive, and ultimately a failure. By chopping up the five relationships into a random roulette sequence, the tension is never allowed to build up. It doesn't help that Lucy is so different with each man and the effect becomes disjointing. That does lead to the second problem. Monica Potter is gorgeous and she's not this neurotic character. There could have some self doubt but this character's interior monologue is trying to be Woody Allen. Not to mention that her character changes from one date to the next. She's playing five or more characters. It's interesting to see her stretch her acting chops but it's still a problem. Overall, this has some fun and some intrigue. Mostly, it's disjointed and flat.

Interesting Concept, Bad Execution
beatrice5139815 July 2003
I loved Monica Potter in 'The Very Thought of You,' and was excited to see this 2002 romantic comedy starring the actress. Like 'The Very Thought of You,' 'I'm With Lucy' has a wacky premise: show the audience five different guys' dates with one girl, and hint that she'll marry one of them before the movie's over. It almost sounds like a concept for a reality show, and maybe it would have made a better tv show than a movie.

The storytelling mechanism (a little snippet of each of the five dates, then the cycle begins again) is gutsy, and I was intrigued by the idea. However, somewhere during all those dates, we lose track of who Lucy really is... She's drunk in one, and in all the others, seems strangely affected by the man she's with. She's a bit too chameleon-like for me to relate to, I guess.

The guys are all interesting... I especially liked John Hannah as Doug, though I may be biased since I adored him in Sliding Doors. The others are good, nothing horrible about their performances.

I think the main problem was the script. I kept cringing at the lines, which made the actors appear as if they were trying so hard to make this movie work that they didn't have any fun. But, as I was reminded by someone the other day, good actors can't save a movie -- they can only elevate it. I think Monica Potter and the other's elevated 'I'm With Lucy', but alas, they couldn't save it.

I do look forward to Monica's next foray into the genre. She can be fun to watch if given the right script and support.

My personal opinion
patriciatobin484 April 2005
I bought this DVD because I am a huge fan of David Boreanaz and found it quite entertaining and a pleasant surprise. Monica Potter is a good actress but I didn't feel she was powerful enough for this film. The male actors were all very good and the idea behind the film was good but it lacked cohesion. David was, as always, excellent but as with the other actors, their potential characters were not explored enough. However it was a pleasant light-hearted little film which did not discredit any of the actors. However, unfortunately this is a film which will be seen by a limited audience. I think it would be a good made-for-TV movie rather than the cinema. As a David Boreanaz fan I would prefer him to have meatier roles than these pretty-boy roles he seems to have been offered. The man is an accomplished actor who can do action, romantic and tragic roles and I'd like to see him in more productive parts. Anthony LaPaglia as always was a joy to watch.

Likable redo of an OLD Ginger Rogers film
jaybob3 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Yes Dear Readers, we have seen a film like this before, probably many times before,

The one it reminds me the most of was TOM,DICK & HARRY staring Ginger Rogers & a few leading men of the time.

The Ginger Rogers film was made in 1938 or so & had censors to think of, I'm With Lucy is thankfully more adult.

The men in her life are some of todays leading men, including

Gael Garcia Bernal, Henry Thomas, Anthonmy LaPaglia & a few others.

Monica Potter is Lucy &is very pleasant to look at, Just like Ginger Rogers was.

In fact all the cast is pleasant,

This is not a great film by any means, BUT I know I enjoyed it for what it was & so will you.

Rating *** (out of 4)--84 POINTS (OUT OF 100)--IMDb 7 9out of 10)

Why would anyone want to be with Lucy?
smokingjas26 April 2005
Lucy is quite unsympathetic, messed up and a total nag. She has her moments, but I didn't understand nor did I believe that any of the men could be bothered dating here more than once except maybe for the sex. The script is ultra thin, making it one of those pictures that stands or falls with the performance of the lead. Lucy is played by Monica Potter, who couldn't make me care one iota about Lucy. She reminded me of all the spoiled, obnoxious girls you avoided like the plague in college. So what's left? Fine performances, well, more like cameos really, by LaPaglia, Hannah and Thomas and Julie Christie does a strange turn as a Jewish mother. Yes, that's right. Garcia Bernal and Boreanaz are wasted, especially Garcia Bernal. Pass on this one.

See Lucy dating
runawaygoat8 October 2005
We all know that "I'm with Lucy" is not "Citizen Kane" among the movies, but being a fan of cinema masterpieces from all over the world I was really surprised how good and enjoyable this one was. Usually when I see a romantic comedy I skip the channel, but not this time. I decided to follow the story thanks to Monica Potter who is great for that kind of movies and deserves to be more famous. She reminds me of Meg Ryan's roles in "You've got mail", "Sleepless in Seattle" and etc. The movie? Not a single dull moment. Believe me I was expecting something much worse than what I was able to see. Variety of actors works fine, turn of the events is quite surprising. If you'll have a chance watch it. It won't waste your time as it gives everything you could expect from romantic comedy. Few laughs and entertainment. Enjoy!

Bernal can't save banal chick-flick
BetterThanKerouac22 April 2006
There are some fairly atrocious films we can just about suffer through; while others at least have one or two redeeming elements to them. Unfortunately, there are also those pieces of cinematic garbage we can't believe we actually wasted our time watching. I'm With Lucy sits firmly in the latter category. In fact, it's safe to say this dumb-ass, straight-to-DVD chick-flick is among the most tedious, tiresome efforts ever committed to celluloid. The plot, such as it is, is a simple though not entirely bad one. Well, if the likes of Sex and the City are your idea of an evening's entertainment, that is. It concerns Lucy, a 30-something native New Yorker who is about to get married. Her best friends want to know what exactly led up to that moment so Lucy explains that she had five blind dates in the previous year and decided to marry one of them - but which one? The film then proceeds to show us snippets of Lucy's dates with the aforementioned guys, who include Luke (David Boreanaz of Buffy The Vampire Slayer fame); Doug (John Hannah, Sliding Doors et al); Gabriel (Mexican heartthrob Gael Garcia Bernal - Y Tu Mama Tambien, Motorcycle Diaries); Bobby (Anthony LaPaglia - Murder One, Analyze That) and Barry (Henry Thomas - ET, Suicide Kings). Each date has their own individual traits and pluses and minuses, and the point of the film, it seems, is to guess which one Lucy finally fell for. Problem is... the film is so dull, the characters are so one-dimensional and the dialogue is so flat that, odds are, half-way into this film you won't give a monkeys who the dumb blonde finally picks to walk down the aisle with her. Which is a pity in some ways, for, as chick-flicks go, a reasonably good concept was wasted here. Not to mention the criminal waste of genuine acting talent such as the excellent Garcia Bernal. In a nutshell, do yourself a favour and avoid this film as you would hope to avoid bird flu.

Pleasantly Surprised
aaronfilmvideo1 December 2002
I was pleasantly surprised by this little film, way surprised. Without giving away more than promo information, I'll say that Lucy (Monica Potter) is a woman who is none too happy or trusting after a broken romantic relationship. Through the encouragement of families and friends, she enters the dating world with mixed and sometimes funny results.

Why did I like this movie? First up, fun performances by Anthony LaPaglia, Harold Ramis, Gael Garcia Bernal, Henry Thomas and Julie Christie. Second, it has one of the most romantic scenes in my many years of movie watching. Third, aside from their performances, the actors mentioned above are pretty darned sexy in this movie.

The low points? One of the "dates" segments is more boring than the rest and, though, it's necessary to explain Lucy's transformation, the pacing and the writing in those sections dragged the film down a bit.

In spite of its unevenness, I do recommend this to those who are fans of romantic comedy. The lessons Lucy learns are truly part of the sometimes yucky, sometimes romantic dating scene.

Not worth the rental fee
Red-1259 January 2004
I'm with Lucy (2002) is a dumb movie with nothing to recommend it. The star, Monica Potter, has been called "the poor man's Julia Roberts," but Julia Roberts can act, and Monica can't. (Maybe she can, but she doesn't demonstrate any acting ability in this film.)

Will Lucy marry the arrogant orthopedic surgeon? Will she find true love with someone humbler? Do I care? Does anybody care?

If you want to watch Julia Roberts, watch the real thing. "Accept no substitutes."

Extremely Underrated Romantic Comedy
juanita8 July 2008
My low expectations were surprisingly rewarded with what turned out to be a jewel of film that I had never heard of. There are very few modern romances that appeal to me in this day and age. At the beginning of I'm With Lucy my skepticism seemed to be on target. A highly unlikely setup with our heroine, played by Monica Potter, being dismissively dumped by a creep of a boyfriend, Craig Bierko, in a public elevator and eventually setting out on five blind dates in search of the right, if not perfect man. But slowly as each scenario played out and I got to know not only each of the men she dates (John Hannah, Gael Garcia Bernal, Anthony La Paglia, Henry Thomas and David Boreanaz) as well as Lucy, I was totally won over. By the time that Lucy married one her blind dates at the end of the film, I'd found something that I've missed during the usual attempts at melding comedy and romance in today's movie market, a real warmth in the story that was told, and an appreciation for most, if not all the characters in the film. We actually experienced Lucy's growth in awareness and self knowledge. The cast was wonderful, and I'm not just thinking of the five male dates and Monica Potter, Julie Christie and Harold Ramis as Lucy's embarrassingly informative parents were spot on. If for some reason you haven't seen this film yet, please give it a try. It truly deserves real consideration given the fact that it had little or no theatrical release and a very skimpy and unannounced DVD release here in the US, although the British release does include cast interviews which are not found on the US release.

Just The Wrong Choice !
elshikh429 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I thought that she shouldn't choose the one who looked like her; in past, marks, circumstances.. etc. Because this may be a mutual narcissism. You're just looking for the one who is relatively differing from you, having whatever attracts you; so the positive attracts the negative in physics. In brief, we fall in love - forever this time - with whoever completes us, and maybe all of that applies to the character of the intellectual very patient first date, regarding that he tolerated (Lucy) in her worst states ever, didn't take advantage of her, and - above all - he has virtues that she doesn't have as he learns from her too!

The script avoided him as the winner of (Lucy)'s heart, whether because she didn't fall in love with him, or to make sure that this was a character that turned into a better person because of her, unlike her relationships with all the rest of the men / dates, hence she was the one who was influenced by them.

The movie itself was super fun as a fine new plot, with an engaging performance from everybody, especially (Monica Potter) who's so lovely and sensitive. Strange that a lot of people say that she is the young copy of (Julia Roberts), or that she is doing the kind of roles that (Meg Ryan) done. Well, they're all mistaken, and all of that talk is pure nonsense. (Potter) is on her own, like no other, but unfortunately has bad luck all over her career, which had TV shows and independent movies more than any mainstream movies.

Anyway, although I believe that there is no rules in love, but I always thought that this lead didn't make the right choice, like she selected herself but in a manly copy. And believe me, on the long run, that's not a good thing to do. Certainly, I "wasn't" with (Lucy) in this!

PS: If you're thinking like me that (Lucy) made the wrong choice, please E-mail me.

Real waste of time
sener21215 March 2004
There is no purpose in this movie. Maybe it's just shot for entertainment but i cannot say they succeeded in doing that.

This movie just addresses some teen girls who search for the famous "Right Guy".

"While I was watching the movie life just stopped for me, I completely forgot my identity and I felt like I was Lucy instead. I felt I am not capable of choosing any of those five men and i felt I gotta get away. So I turned my player off and I returned to my real life. So tragic, isn't it?.."

cute story
kclynne1830 March 2003
I just went out and saw "I'm with Lucy" and to be honest it was more than I expected it to be. I was thinking it was just going to be another typical chick flick, but this one was different.

It follows Lucy, who has just been dumped by her boyfriend in an elevator (with other people around), and is trying to move on with her life. So, she goes out on 5 blind dates over the course of so long. A year I think.

Date 1: Doug, an antamologist. Lucy doesn't want to go on a blind date so she locks herself in her bathroom drunk until her sister boots her out.

Date 2: Gabriel, a play write. There is such a physical attraction between the two that they start to kiss.

Date 3: Bobby, a baseball player for the Mets. He comes on too agressive that Lucy doesn't like.

Date 4: Barry, a Software Co. owner who is a major geek. But in a charming way.

Date 5: Luke, a doctor/ physical therapist, who is smart, handsome, and seems flawless.

Over the course of the movie, it follows Lucy's first date with each of these guys and at the end she marries one of them. Can you guess which?

Originally I only rented this movie becasue I am a HUGE David Boreanaz fan and I was pleasently surprised with his character and his portrayal of Luke. I was also very pleasently surprised with the movie itself. Monica Potter and the rest of the cast did an amazing job! Go rent this if you need a up lifting self movie! It lifted my spirits for the night!

I originally wanted to see this movie because I am a Boreanaz fan, but I was actually pleasantly surprised by this little flick. The story was cute, Lucy was likeable and no Mary Sue, and her suitors were all decent yet human. This movie won't win any awards, but is a fun popcorn night in with the buds kinda film. Enjoyable.

Monica Potter is an unexpected treasure
janet-558 February 2006
I had never seen Monica Potter before. She is adorable in this film, somewhere between Julia Roberts (as I think other folks have suggested) and Juliette Lewis. As a woman though I watched this Rom-Com (remember such films are not deep and shouldn't be deep, and are really only intended as a 'lech-fest')rather more for the fellas. And on the whole they're an extremely nice looking bunch. The idea of the film is that the dumped Lucy is set up on five blind dates by her helpful sister, and in intriguing snippets we watch how these dates work out. Perhaps the only real problem with the film is that it's obvious from the moment he comes on to the screen who the ultimate lucky guy who gets to marry her is going to be. That said I must give Henry Thomas and Anthony LaPaglia special mention for being so entertaining throughout. This is a nice little film for a wet Sunday afternoon: just right to raise your spirits.

David Boreanaz- why why why
jacquelineds12 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
The movie was good not brilliant, I've seen Monica Potter in other films and yet this one just did not sit well with me. I love romantics but this film i got bored quickly. Maybe because I was hoping to see more of David Boreanaz (the only reason I watched the movie). I was very disappointed with David Boreanaz's character, looking forward to seeing him in this film but he did nothing for me and just thought he could have had a better character. He looked hot as ever no doubt, but i was not happy especially at the end I thought no why did he not play the one she ends up with?, that to me would suit him more. I love David he is my favorite actor at the moment and i will always wanna see more of him. I know the movie is more focused on Monica being the main character and all, but when you watch a movie because of an actor that you enjoy watching, and they don't end up as you like the movie can sometimes be a disappointment. I do recommend the movie to people who enjoy Monica she played well and I enjoyed her character. This is a good romantic!!!

gael garcia bernal
marilynscaggs8 June 2005
I saw this movie a couple of years ago and liked it immediately. Its funny, sad, sweet and has a terrific ending. The cast is very likable, with a lot of familiar faces you will recognize. I really like the lead actress. She is one of my new favorite actresses. Monica Potter is a blond Julia Roberts. She even sounds like her.

But Gael Garcia Bernal is definitely the reason I rewatched it! He's is so scrumptious to look at and I thought he was very good in the movie. It is good all the way through and I would definitely recommend it. In fact, I would like to see it again. I will probably buy it for my own collection.

Psychological Study
tomteboda10 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
The strength of this film is not in its wit, acting, or scenery. This film shines by giving insight into the quirkiness of dating and the psychology of people who don't really understand themselves when they get with other people.

Lucy is a stiff-mannered ragdoll. She's constrained by good manners to not put people down, but she can't own up to her own feelings even when they hit her in the face. She fails repeatedly to draw firm lines with men, despite (as another reviewer noted) their obnoxious bad behavior (and in one case returns the favor to another date). Being an uplifting comedy, the movie ends with Lucy finally finding "Mr. Right", who accepts her as-is, and who she can accept for who he is.

The charm of Lucy's character rests in her willingness to see the best in other people. Although one date seems brash and self-absorbed, she sticks it out far enough with him to establish a friendship. On the other hand, this trait leads to her entanglement with exactly the wrong sort of man, despite his blatant disregard for her on multiple occasions.

Lucy is a complex woman, and her dates are complex men. For a short film, this story managed to convey a depth of character rarely seen in the genre. I recommend it to the introspective and people-watchers, but not to folks looking for a pat-story.

I'm With Lucy - one of my favorites
kathycfg2 March 2007
This is just a gem of a movie. I think I fell in love the film, its characters and its writer when Lucy is serenaded by one of her potential suitors. The song, True by Spandau Ballet.

There are a couple versions of this film out there. I believe the one which is aired on cable television is superior to that which is included on the DVD. The layout affects how you are able to process the five suitor's relationship to our main character, Lucy (Potter).

Some genuinely "easy-to-hate" performances are turned in by the actors, others are more endearing. Admittedly, this is a chick flick in every sense, but a little part of me rejoices every time I see it. This movie is for everyone who's been in that awkward place of hopeful, fearful, dating, committed, separated, broken-up, testing the waters, and settled, all at once.

I'm With Lucy proves we're all just a little neurotic when it comes to love.

I love Lucy! It's intelligent and romantic, Potter is a delight
inkblot1110 July 2007
Lucy (Monica Potter) has just been dumped in an ELEVATOR...in front of a group of people! Only moments before, she told a friend that she thought this guy was the one. Men stink, don't they? Well, not all, read on. After an appropriate mourning period, she goes out with five men. One is a blind date (John Hannah) and Lucy is so nervous, she is tipsy by the time he arrives. Sparks don't fly. Another pal sets her up with Bobby (Anthony LaPaglia), a full-of-himself ballplayer who wants her to cook him dinner, not take him to a Vivaldi concert. Other dates include a hot Latin gardener, a handsome doctor, and a shy businessman (Henry Thomas). Will Lucy fall for any of these guys? This is one of those romantic comedies that sports the whole package. It has good looking stars, an intelligent and funny script, great costumes, nice settings and more. Julie Christie and Harold Ramis make a nice appearance as Lucy's parents, too. Best of all, the movie has a very imaginative format, alternating and interspersing clips of Lucy's five encounters until, finally, the film comes to a happy ending. In short, its romcom heaven time for all of the genre's fans....and even for those who aren't. Few people will be able to resist Lucy's charms so order up a copy today.

Wonderfully Surprising
steph081925 May 2003
I was expecting a run of the mill romantic comedy with flat characters and cliches..but I was pleasantly surprised to see the opposite. The story follows Lucy who goes on 5 dates over the course of the year after being dumped by her 'perfect' boyfriend. I was impressed by how the story was presented with all 5 dates simulataneously, and yet it was not confusing or choppy. Each scene transitioned well into the next and I felt it helped to make better judgements of each character with them all being fresh in your mind.

I was originally drawn to this film because of John Hannah and Anthony LaPaglia, and both indeed gave excellent performances, but I went away being struck by Henry Thomas. His portrayal of Barry was refreshingly sweet and witty. Monica Potter may resemble Julia Roberts in voice and appearance, but I find her to be much more interesting and entertaining to watch. (I recommend another of her films, The Very Thought of You)

Overall, the movie is funny and touching, and more original than most romantic comedies out there. Slightly predictable, but I was very happy with Lucy's decision in the end...I wanted that ending from the moment of the greetings of each of date.

Good Cast, well directed.
tom-17113 October 2002
A great little ensemble of actors. Funny appearances by Anthony Lapaglia, and Harold Ramis and its always great to see the lovely Julie Christie. However, the real prize here is Monica Potter. This talented actress shows her strength may lie in comedy roles. Her comedic timing and great acting make this role of Lucy a winner......I loved her performance. Excellent job by director Jon Sherman, and a good looking film as well.
