Resurrecting Sci-fi Legend: Pavich Taps Alejandro
Frank Herbert’s epic novel Dune has been a sci-fi benchmark since it’s original release back in 1965, and since, there have been several attempts at a worthy film adaptation. No one guessed that psychedelic surrealist Alejandro Jodorowsky, who rose to fame for his midnight oddities El Topo and The Holy Mountain, would be the man to stake his claim for the task. After a friend suggested he check out the book, Jodorowsky (without initially reading it first) decided it to be the follow up to his 1973 sleeper hit. His goal was to use the interstellar opera to expand the consciousness of youth the world over, reproducing the mind-bending effects of LCD without taking the drug itself. Fancying himself a movie-making martyr with a metaphysical mission, Jodorowsky remarkably amassed a past and future A-list cast and crew of ‘spiritual warriors’ (as he called...

This dose of car porn starring Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul is short on new ideas, but sadly rather long on running time
Multiplex-friendly car porn has become quite the rage since the fuel-injected money shots of the Fast & Furious franchise proved that a B-movie formula could still turn an A-list buck. But once you've seen rampant muscle cars thrusting in and out of bulbous airplanes it's hard to know where to take the spectacle next, so Need for Speed throws in an Apache helicopter to spice up the car-on-car action, with grunting engines and orgasmic gear-grinding groans accompanying each 3D climax.
As you'd expect from a video game spinoff, the plot is perfunctory tosh; a rivalry between two butch ciphers (one of whom favours black attire) involving an old girlfriend, a dead brother, and a series of high velocity road races with air support and police pursuit aplenty. Hundreds...

Books and films have been joined at the hip ever since the earliest days of cinema, and adaptations of novels have regularly provided audiences with the classier end of the film spectrum. Here, the Guardian and Observer's critics pick the 10 best
• Top 10 family movies
• Top 10 war movies
• Top 10 teen movies
• Top 10 superhero movies
• Top 10 westerns
• Top 10 documentaries
• More Guardian and Observer critics' top 10s
10. Planet of the Apes
Although the source novel, La Planète des Singes, was written by Frenchman Pierre Boule and originally reached its futureshock climax in Paris, this enduring sci-fi fantasy is profoundly American, putting Charlton Heston's steel-jawed patriotism to incredible use. It also holds up surprisingly well as a jarring allegory for the population's fears over escalating cold war tensions.
Beginning with a spaceship crash-landing on an unknown planet after years of cryogenic sleep, Franklin J Schaffner's film soon gets into gear as Heston's upstanding...

Prince William and Kate were nowhere in sight, but British high society still managed to snag itself a royal and a Middleton Saturday night. Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton were on hand to attend the splashy Boodles Boxing Ball at London's Grosvenor House Hotel. The annual charity gala, which is now in its fourth year, benefits a foundation for terminally ill children and a trust for injured soldiers.Prince George's 29-year-old uncle looked sleek and chic in a tuxedo as he made his way inside the gala. Meanwhile, Middleton, 30, who arrived separately with beau Nico Jackson, stunned in a pleated...

An early favorite for worst movie of 2013? Try "Movie 43," which is apparently so bad that it makes "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" seem good less terrible by comparison.
The star-studded comedy, which wasn't screened in advance for critics, owns a 5 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many reviewers hammering the film for its across-the-board failures. It's probably not a coincidence the "Movie 43" stars -- Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Emma Stone, Richard Gere, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Jason Sudeikis, Chloe Moretz, Anna Faris, Terrence Howard and even Seth MacFarlane -- weren't made available for press interviews; as The New York Post posited, the comedy is one "that Hollywood’s A-list wants to forget."
Not you, though -- especially if you're a connoisseur of bad reviews. Ahead, the 11 nastiest critical burns written about "Movie 43."

Fans of classic movies know that "Woman of the Year" marks the beginning of the 25-year partnership, on- and off-screen, between one of film's most beloved and enduring couples: Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Released 70 years ago today (on January 19, 1942), "Woman of the Year" came to define combustible romantic chemistry, thanks to the two fiery, evenly-matched leads. It launched a partnership that lasted until Tracy's death in 1967, a quarter-century union that resulted in nine films and an extramarital affair that was Hollywood's worst kept secret. What fans may not know is how the partnership came to be, who the real-life inspirations were for Hepburn's high-minded columnist and Tracy's earthy sportswriter, or the forgotten screen pairing of the two stars that came four years earlier. Read on for the untold story of "Woman of the Year" and its long afterlife in the realms of Broadway, TV, and magazines. 1. "Woman of the Year...

Besides kicking off the summer-movie season – fun fact time -- May is also Asian-American and Pacific-Islander Heritage Month in the United States.
Asians have traditionally been the least-represented ethnic group in Hollywood, whether on television or films. But we've come a long way since David Carradine squinted through "Kung Fu," or the embarrassing stereotypes of houseboys, geishas, and Long Duk Dong (damn you, black eye on "Sixteen Candles"). Today, Asians on primetime and multiplexes are sexy, funny, and taking on leading roles.
We're celebrating the month by profiling 10 young and talented Asian (which we expanded to include a couple of South Asian performers) rising stars.
Brenda Song
A child model of Hmong heritage, Song landed a lucrative Disney contract at age 14. The Mouse House cast her in supporting roles in its made-for-tv movies and as the air-headish hotel heiress in the popular tween series "The Suite Life" and its spinoff "The Suite Deck,...

London, Nov 14 – The newest fashion apparel, a zip dress designed by Victoria Beckham, is the current favourite among A-list stars, who just cannot seem to get enough of it.
The body-con classic has an edgy new look with an exposed zip detail running all down the back of the frock, and could cost up to 2,095 pounds, which is worth paying as it enables women to flaunt their hourglass figure.
British media personality Carol Vorderman, 49, singer Jennifer Lopez, 41, telly’s Amanda Holden, 39, Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger, 32, and opera singer Katherine Jenkins, 30, have all been spotted wearing the new dress.
The frocks are also hitting the High Street, with Topshop, New Look and All Saints all copying.

I have a confession to make: the Antoine Dodson business of the past few weeks has made me retch in a way that few “internet sensations” have this year or any other year.
In case you somehow missed the story, Dodson (pictured right) is the Huntsville, Alabama man who saved his sister from being raped when a man broke into her bedroom during the middle of the night.
But it wasn't Dodson's bravery that has made him a sensation. It was an interview he gave to a local news station showing an emotional Dodson recounting what nearly happened to his sister.
Call me solemn, but I simply couldn’t muster up enough smugness to laugh at a poor, black, widely assumed to be gay man...

Plus celebrating PS22, World Cup kissing, CBS de-gays, and why is Dustin Lance Black writing a screenplay about that guy?
Happy 37th birthday to out singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright. Below you can see "Zebulon" from his latest album All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu. I have to admit that my Spanish is a bit sketchy (I took two years in high school, and the only phrase I've retained is "su salchicha es masiva,") but from what I gather from this clip, Spanish TV reporter Raúl Gómez had a wish to kiss one of the players from Spain's World Cup winning team, and Cesc Fábregas obliged. It's very cute, and I love the Hanna-Barbera effects.
Below you can see Rep. Aaron Schock (who is in no way, shape, or form a gay icon, so people need to quit calling him that) inexplicably appears on next week's Top Chef to present some kind of toothpick challenge.

If there's one thing that Quentin Tarantino can do better than anyone else, it's resuscitate flatlining actors. But even he may have his work cut out with Lindsay Lohan
A few years ago, it was fun to peg Lindsay Lohan as the girl from the film about the magical winking car. The assumption was that an actress as hotly tipped as her would go on to win massive acclaim and awards, and reminding her of her days as the star of Herbie: Fully Loaded would be a terrific wheeze.
Things haven't exactly panned out that way, though. Professionally, Lindsay Lohan has lurched from bad to worse, picking up a stroppy letter from a producer here, playing a pair of amnesiac stripper twins there. The few films she's hired for go straight to DVD, and her work is overshadowed by the slow-motion demolition job that is her personal life. The end...

In his short film career, Jay Gillespie has already had the distinct privilege of working with two horror icons—Tony Todd ("Candyman") and Robert Englund ("Nightmare on Elm Street"). And it was through Back Stage that Gillespie booked the lead in "One by One: Death's Door" featuring Todd and Oscar nominee Sally Kirkland. "We exchanged emails and everything like that. He's ginormous in real life," Gillespie says of Todd. "He has this very deep, throaty voice and he would say, 'Just keep doing it,' [of acting]. He wanted me to be in 'Hatchet 2.' He was like, 'You'd be perfect for it, buddy.' And I was like, 'I think it's cast already.' And he said, 'So what? Talk to your manager.'" Chicago – “The Hunger” is one of the more unusual entries in the history of the TV anthology series, a personal favorite sub-genre of this writer raised on “The Twilight Zone,” “The Outer Limits,” “Tales From the Crypt,” and “Amazing Stories”. It has amazing star power, a loose relation to a great ’80s horror movie, and enough thrills to entertain, but has been largely forgotten by TV history.
DVD Rating: 3.0/5.0 “The Hunger” aired in syndicated form from 1997-2000. It is not directly based on the film of the same name but does feature some loose relations - horror theme, David Bowie hosted season two, and the Scott brothers (Ridley and Tony, who directed the film “The Hunger”) produced.

- It's been a very interesting week in Tarantino land. The notoriously snail-paced auteur has not only delivered the script for his long discussed WW2 men on a mission flick Inglorious Bastards (or Inglourious Basterds according to Qt's hand scribbled cover page), but he's also made constant promises to deliver the epic to next year's Cannes – a suicide mission in and of itself. He has gone out of his way in recent months to talk about how he took a drastically different approach in writing the film by not writing the characters with specific actors in mind, instead letting his imagination run wild and then finding a cast that could deliver. So we knew there would be some serious casting change-ups this time around, but who would have guessed that he would be eyeing the likes of Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio? That’s right, Tarantino looks to be hitting
