In the mid to late 2000s, Timberlake took a slight break from his successful music career to focus on his filmography. He made a few notable projects like Alpha Dog and Black Snake Moan that garnered some praise from his contemporaries in the film industry. But it wasn’t until his performance in The Social Network that he found his acting getting serious recognition.
He won the role as young tech millionaire Sean Parker in the 2010 Oscar-nominated feature. He even beat out Jonah Hill for the role. Hill might have gotten the part if Fincher didn’t insist on Timberlake.

Christina Ricci has been working in Hollywood since she was 10 years old, and after decades onscreen, the “Yellowjackets” star devised a unique tactic to de-stigmatizing female nudity onscreen: Just stay naked off-screen.
During Variety’s Actors on Actors roundtable, Ricci revealed to “Euphoria” actress Sydney Sweeney that she was most uncomfortable when other people were uncomfortable, so Ricci made her nudity a bit of a joke.

We're celebrating each of the upcoming Honorary Oscar winners with a few pieces on their careers.
by Cláudio Alves
Previously in the "Honoraries" miniseries, Ben Miller and Lynn Lee looked at Samuel L. Jackson's work in two provocative indies, exploring the actor's innate intensity. Craig Brewer's Black Snake Moan reveals Jackson as a bluesman inflamed by spiritual purpose, while Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction saw him play a hitman and resulted in the actor's only Oscar nomination. It should have also resulted in a victory, but that's a matter for another day, another article. This time, I shall investigate the complexities of his turn in Kasi Lemmons's Eve's Bayou. The director's debut feature was a passion project for many people involved, including Jackson, who also produced.
Such investment, such devotion, may be at the heart of his achievement. Not only is Eve's Bayou a masterpiece of 1990s American cinema,...

Craig Brewer’s Black Snake Moan is a hard sell on paper and an even harder sell in execution. Jackson’s Lazarus finds half-naked and half-dead sex addict Rae (Christina Ricci) on the side of the road. He takes her back to his house to nurse her back to health. In order to cure her sex addiction, Lazarus chains Rae to his radiator. Luckily for Brewer and the film, Jackson fully invests in the provocative material, delivering a fiery performance of angry righteousness, and one of the best star turns of his career...

Exclusive: Christina Ricci has signed on to play a supporting role in The Dresden Sun, a cyberpunk indie from writer-director Michael Ryan, which also stars Samantha Win.
The film observes as a heist goes south when a brilliant, principled mercenary with a traumatic past works with an insider to steal a valued asset from Peredor Corporation called “the sphere.” The C & Earth corporation, vying for global dominance, seeks to find a solution to an otherworldly technology via a scientist’s project. Meanwhile, a financial analyst, who despises his job at the powerful investment firm Mutual One, finds himself caught between deadly corporate rivals, financial fraud, and technological espionage, and is ultimately forced to run from a psychopathic military contractor.
Ricci will play Dr. Dresden Corliss, an inventor of a cosmic technology, who grieves over the death of a loved one.

Filmmaker Craig Brewer is a man to whom music is the key that unlocks most things. In his breakthrough film Hustle & Flow, it was the biographic, confessional (and Oscar-winning) rapping of his lead character that propelled the movie forward. In Black Snake Moan, it was swampy blues music; and in Footloose, it was pretty […]

Craig Brewer burst on the scene in 2005 with the hip-hop classic Hustle & Flow, winner of Best Original Song Oscar for Three 6 Mafia’s “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp.” Following his take on a Blaxploitation flick, the sweaty Black Snake Moan starring Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci, and a remake of Footloose, it would be some time before he returned to the director’s chair.
Flash forward to 2019, when Brewer teamed with Eddie Murphy to make the hilarious Dolemite Is My Name, a movie about Rudy Ray Moore’s pimp persona and successful indie film career making Blaxploitation movies. Brewer and Murphy have now reteamed for Coming 2 America, a sequel to the John Landis comedy classic that is now streaming on Amazon Prime.

Oscar producers Lynette Howell Taylor and Stephanie Allain are promising that the 92nd Oscars will have plenty of diversity on display on Sunday.
“Lynette and I have always embraced diversity and inclusion in our work and we already had plans before the nominations were announced to celebrate that, so I think you’ll see that in the presenters and performers,” Allain said at a 25-minute news conference Wednesday at the Hollywood and Highland site of the show.
The diversity issue has been highlighted by Cynthia Erivo, who played Harriet Tubman in the film “Harriet” being the only one person of color among the 20 actors nominated for Academy Awards and no female director being nominated in the directing category.
Howell Taylor said the ceremonies will be staged with inclusion in mind with a more open presentation area. “It will be less of a proscenium,” she added.
Allain said Kobe Bryant, who died in a Jan.

It’s October, which means a season of horror awaits, but aside from a few compelling genre options this month, one might be best served to queue some classics. The best films coming to U.S. theaters over the next few weeks hail mainly from festivals from earlier this year beyond, with one clear-cut top selection. Check out our monthly picks below.
15. Sweetheart (J.D. Dillard; Oct. 22)
The first two films on this month’s round-up were late additions to the October slate. First up, J.D. Dillard’s creature feature is an inventive little delight. I said in my Sundance review, “When Tom Hanks was stranded on an island alone in Cast Away, he got the better end of the deal than what Kiersey Clemons faces in Sweetheart. Not only must she try to survive with limited resources on a deserted island, but her character Jen must also fight for her life against a cruel,...

As its title character might put it, “Dolemite Is My Name” is a total motherf—kin’ blast. It tells the story — all true, all outrageous — of one of the most successful blaxploitation films of the ’70s, the insanely over-the-top and borderline inept “Dolemite” (1975), and of how that movie came to be. And it turns the story into a celebration of the effrontery of African-American showbiz. One definition of soul, given the history of racism in this country, is that it’s about the art of making more out of less. Soul food grew out of the fact that slaves were given the lowliest cuts of meat; they took those leftover slabs and turned them into America’s greatest homegrown cuisine. Rudy Ray Moore, played by Eddie Murphy with a motormouth brashness that won’t quit (and a twinkle of sweetness behind it), is dealing with his own version of slim...

Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock alum Tracy Morgan has joined Eddie Murphy in Paramount Pictures’ Coming To America 2. He will also star alongside Arsenio Hall, Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Kiki Layne, James Earl Jones, Rick Ross, and Paul Bates.
According to Deadline, “Jones will portray the son’s mother, who had a one-night stand with Akeem. Morgan’s character is Reem, a hustler who is Jones’ brother.” I’m a fan of Morgan ,and it’s great to see that he got cast in this film. He’s definitely going to make a great addition to the cast and deliver some fun comedy.
The original 1988 comedy followed Murphy as Prince Akeem, “a spoiled prince from the fictional African nation of Zamunda, who arrives in Queens, New York, and in undercover fashion gets a job at a McDonald’s knockoff while trying to find a wife.”
The sequel will focus on Akeem,...

Netflix has dropped the first trailer for Eddie Murphy’s new film, Dolemite is My Name, which is a biopic that will tell the story of the life of Rudy Ray Moore, “a comedy and rap pioneer who proved naysayers wrong when his hilarious, obscene, kung-fu fighting alter ego, Dolemite, became a 1970s Blaxploitation phenomenon.”
The movie looks fantastic, and it’s awesome to see Eddie Murphy in a great movie role again! It looks like he’s going to give a hell of a performance! He’s in the zone! I missed this Eddie Murphy!
The movie comes from director Craig Brewer, and it has an impressive supporting cast that includes Wesley Snipes, Keegan-Michael Key, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Chris Rock, Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess, Mike Epps, T.I., and Chelsea Gilson.

Eddie Murphy and Keegan-Michael Key's blaxploitation biopic, Dolemite is My Name!, gets its first trailer form Netflix.
Film producer Rudy Ray Moore was one of a kind. Known as the "Godfather of Rap," Moore had a career that spanned decades, varying musical genres, nightclub routines, and even a stint as a church preacher. But he is of course likely best known for his Blaxploitation cult classic, Dolemite. The making of that last film is also the subject of a new affectionate-looking documentary coming from Netflix and the director of Hustle & Flow: Dolemite is My Name! And with Eddie Murphy playing him no less...
If you don't know who Dolemite is, well he was marketed as "the ultimate ghetto hero," one badass pimp renowned for his Kung fu prowess, and his clique of employed ladies who'd help him keep the community safe. This was the crux of the 1975 B-thriller produced by Moore,...

"It's filthy! You've got a product here that you can't sell, or promote." Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for an amusing new indie film titled Dolemite is My Name, the latest feature made by acclaimed American filmmaker Craig Brewer. When Hollywood shuts him out, multi-talented Rudy Ray Moore strikes out on his own to make the 1975 blaxploitation film titled Dolemite. Comics and rappers have praised Moore as a pioneering influence over the past few decades, and Dolemite is My Name is a hilarious celebration of a singular talent who made his own legend. Eddie Murphy stars as Rudy Ray Moore, including a fantastic supporting cast with Wesley Snipes, Keegan-Michael Key, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Chris Rock, Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess, Mike Epps, T.I., and Chelsea Gilson.
