A Below Average Grade for Graduating Class
samgslp1 September 2011
Miss Siddons is the new European history teacher at an all-girl college, and she is a bit shy at first. However, she quickly sorts out who the slackers are and who the model students are, and forms a particularly close bond to one girl named Gloria. Her perception of Gloria is altered when she witnesses her accompanying an older man into a night club and struggles to maintain an appropriate relationship with both Gloria and next door neighbor Ben Prowdy.

This episode is very awkward, and much of that awkwardness comes from the way in which the story is presented. Too much time is spent setting up the premise and some of the events which promise mystery and intrigue are quickly resolved and revealed as misunderstandings. The lessons revealed through the story of Miss Siddons - "don't judge a book by its cover" and "choose your friends wisely" - are taught haphazardly and result in a muddled story that is sometimes quite boring and ultimately a little bit confusing and unbelievable.

It takes an awful lot of time to tell this story which is actually pretty simple, and although the lessons to be taught are fine ones, this is really not one of the better episodes of season five.

Hiller, All Wendy Hiller
richard.fuller122 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
In watching many of these Hitchcocks, they run the usual route to the point of absolutely predictable, making even quirky comic book stories seem more compelling.

In this instance, it was all the prim and properness of Hiller and how even she can make a mistake trying to look out for one of her students.

Had she verbally confronted Gloria with her suspicions early on, instead of relying on a letter, she could have explained she saw Gloria while at the book store, where she was buying a book for Gloria.

It's a peculiar commentary on a woman not being allowed about by herself; she must be escorted.

The involvement of Ben was a bit overwhelming, but it delivered the shocked behavior of Hiller at the end. I suppose it also opened up how she couldn't even trust Gloria as well.

Best worth noting was a reference to Gloria as 'p.c.' standing for 'privileged character' and what it means for us today.

A very poor episode.

It's a strange episode that meanders and it's never totally clear what the stakes are. When any complications in the story are resolved they are to little narrative effect. Maybe the episode played better in '59, but I doubt it. This is a very poorly structured episode.

She Is a Clueless Victim As Well
Hitchcoc28 April 2023
This is perhaps the worst of all the episodes of this series, and I've seen most of them. We take a fragile teacher who has come from a horrible life in Europe. She is an English teacher and has rather strict rules. Gloria is her star pupil. She also has her issues. The problem for her is the guy across the hall whom she befriends and who turns on her. Usually in a Hitchcock story, someone who is sneaky, underhanded, or evil gets what's coming to them. Here she makes a mistake, getting too close to a student and trying to guide her. It's a big mistake, but her heart is in the right place. Putting things in writing when you are only speculating is bad news.

What a STUPID twist!

Briarstone. Wendy hiller--miss siddons gigi perreau--gloria.

Twist comes from out of left field.

"Graduating Class" is a terrible episode of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents". The twist is stupid, it comes from out of left field and really makes little sense. I am surprised...because it really is THAT bad and seems to offer no lesson and really frustrated me.

Miss Siddons (Wendy Hiller) is a new literature teacher at some fancy girls school. One of her students, Gloria (Gigi Perreau), is really motivated and seems like a great student. And, when the show takes a very dark turn, it really doesn't seem to fit the story at all. Disappointing in every way about what happens next when Siddons spots the girl coming out of a strip club.

"The brain requires discipline. Discipline and patience."

Warning: Spoilers
I felt bad for teacher Laura Siddons (Wendy Hiller) at the end of this story, because for once, a Hitchcock character did nothing to deserve their 'punishment'. Wouldn't it have been better if the denouement involved a wicked turn for that creep Ben Prowdy (Robert H. Harris) instead of the unsuspecting woman. I guess it wasn't unreasonable for Gloria (Gigi Perreau) to suspect Laura for the outrageous blackmail demand foisted by Prowdy, but why have her bear the brunt of his phony friendship? Ms. Siddon's mistake was for ever getting involved with her slimy neighbor across the hall, and in Gloria's case, proving that no good deed goes unpunished.

Mighty weak tea...

Alfred Hitchcock made and/or lent his name to quite a bit of material, and most of it was pretty good. The 'Alfred Hitchcock presents' shows were almost always much-better at 30 minutes than the 'Alfred Hitchcock hour' shows were. Many of the hour-long shows were simply too-long for the story being told. The hour-long shows were often chock-full of obvious filler material,time-wasting foolishness,dead-ends and other tiresome nonsense.

But this show here is the 30 minute show, the Alfred Hitchcock presents show. As a rule, these 30 minute shows were almost always much-tighter and much-better than the hour-long shows ever were.

These facts make the very-few bad 30 minute episodes stick out like a sore-thumb.

Such as this episode. This has to be the dullest, lamest, worst 'Alfred Hitchcock presents' episode that I've seen yet. The story here is very weak,it is downright silly in fact. It is not believable, because it simply doesn't ring true in any way. I didn't like it at all. Skip it.
