There are ghosts that haunt the houses of New York’s Hudson Valley, we’re told early on in Things Heard & Seen (now screening on Netflix) — the spirits of former owners who may have unfinished business in this realm, or who may be protecting new occupants from possible danger, or who may be right evil bastards waiting to inspire the living to embrace their own inner darkness. The residents of the region, at least in the early 1980s, seem to accept this as a fact of life; some even view it as a perk.

Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini’s no-thrills, no-chills, ultimately shrug-worthy adaptation of Elizabeth Brundage’s 2016 well-regarded, literary novel, Things Heard & Seen, works hard to turn tired, overused tropes into a compelling, engaging, and otherwise enthralling two-hour film starring recent Oscar nominee Amanda Seyfried. Spoiler alert: Despite a promising beginning that attempts to split the difference between Spoiler alert: Despite a promising beginning that attempts to split the difference between supernatural horror and domestic drama, the by-now obligatory pre-Internet 20th-century setting (1980), and an overabundance of intriguing, weighty ideas about art, spirituality, and the afterlife, Things Heard & Seen stumbles on practically every level, including as the equivalent of a sizzle reel...

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about filmmakers! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today, Conor and I have an incredibly interesting and wide-ranging conversation with directing duo Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini. We chat about their new movie Things Heard & Seen (now available on Netflix), then dive back into their eclectic, accomplished career. From the serendipitous way they came to make the doc Off the Menu: The Last Days of Chasen’s to the unintentional development of the underrated The Extra Man, starring Kevin Kline and Paul Dano. Their HBO film Cinema Verite is briefly mentioned, a wonderful telling of the making of the groundbreaking PBS documentary An American Family from 1973.
Other topics include a failed reimagining of Bride of Frankenstein, the nightmarish post-production process on The Nanny Diaries thanks to Harvey Weinstein,...

We haven’t seen Katie Holmes in too many quality films in the last decade. Woman in Gold, Miss Meadows, The Giver, Jack and Jill, The Extra Man, Mad Money, and others misfires haven’t exactly lived up to her work in Go, Pieces of April or the absolutely wonderful Wonder Boys. Jonathan Ames was a quintessential New York novelist. In books such as “The Extra Man” and “Wake Up, Sir!” he portrayed what it was like to be young, artistically inclined and maybe crazy in the world’s cultural capital. With the HBO series “Bored to Death,” Ames transitioned from writing prose to writing for television, but kept his New York State of mind–capturing a Brooklyn overrun by able-bodied and idle-handed creative types. But Ames is now a West Coaster, having abandoned New York for Los Angeles, the setting of his new series “Blunt Talk,” which stars Patrick Stewart as a cable.

New York I Love You: Berman & Pulcini’s Schmaltz Soaked Latest
Nostalgia, especially in large doses, tends to hobble the authenticity of a text, whether in the literary or cinematic realm. On a superficial level, serving as a love letter to a bygone era of 1980s New York, Eleanor Hendricks’ novel Ten Thousand Saints falls under the quirky spigot of directing duo Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, the team behind the Oscar nominated American Splendor from 2003. In the decade since that critically championed title, they’ve continued with a particular strain of fluffy cornball items. Following a brief assay into studio filmmaking with The Nanny Diaries (2007), they were responsible for a pair of sickly sweet titles headlined by prized performers like Kevin Kline in The Extra Man (2010) and Kristen Wiig in Girl Most Likely (2012). Though their latest venture is slightly more sobering, at least in a notable absence of...

A first sampling of Sundance offerings reveals illuminating documentaries and compelling, if not perfect, narratives
A bit of friendly advice to the producers of “Ten Thousand Saints”: Please, please, please get rid of the opening narration in which the protagonist observes that life is like a river. It’s the worst line of dialogue in the whole movie, and it starts the proceedings off with a cringe.
Luckily, the script (by directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, adapting the novel by Eleanor Henderson) gets better from there. After the death of his best friend Teddy (Avan Jogia, also...

Who can forget 2003 when filmmaker-duo Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini landed at Sundance with a highly inventive biopic, a seminal film really in the indie film cannon. Featuring the debatably unlikeable Clevelander Harvey Pekar, American Splendor moved put the pair on a pedestal, and while they’ve been back to Sundance for The Extra Man (’10), they’ve pretty much stuck to commercial indie items in The Nanny Diaries (07), Cinema Verite – HBO ’11, and Girl Most Likely (aka Imogene) ’12. Starring Asa Butterfield, Ethan Hawke, Hailee Steinfeld, Emile Hirsch, Emily Mortimer and Julianne Nicholson, production began way back at the end of January on Ten Thousand Saints, which comes with a built-in fanbase due to the novel on which it is based on. Should be a high value sales item if included.

It's all in the dysfunctional family for Kevin Kline, Joan Allen (ctr.) and Christina Ricci in The Ice Storm.
The 1997 film drama The Ice Storm is director Ang Lee’s (Life of Pi) adaptation of Rick Moody’s acclaimed 1994 novel of upper-middle-class American malaise.
Suburban Connecticut, 1973: While Richard Nixon’s “I am not a crook” speech drones from the TV, the Hood and Carver families try to navigate a Thanksgiving break simmering with unspoken resentment, sexual tension, and cultural confusion.
With a remarkable sense of clarity, subtlety and, surprisingly, humor, Lee’s renders the novel as a trenchant, tragic cinematic portrait of lost souls.
The film features a fine cast of established actors, including Kevin Kline (The Extra man), Joan Allen (Pleasantville), Sigourney Weaver (Paul), and rising stars Tobey Maguire (The Cider House Rules), Christina Ricci (Bel Ami), Elijah Wood (The...

Ever since breaking out as a troubled teen in "L.I.E.," Paul Dano has proved himself to be one of the best actors of his generation by going toe-to-toe with acting titans like Daniel Day-Lewis (in "There Will Be Blood"), Kevin Kline (in "The Extra Man") Robert De Niro (in "Being Flynn") and Harrison Ford (in "Cowboys & Aliens"), while still managing to leave a lasting impression. In So Yong Kim's bleak character study "For Ellen" (out this Friday in select theaters and on VOD), the Brooklynite goes solo as a troubled rocker, and comes out with a performance that rivals some of the best from the actors he's worked alongside over the course of his eclectic career. Donning a black leather jacket, eye liner and tight jeans, Dano plays Joby Taylor, a divorced rocker, who at the outset of Kim's drama agrees to sign divorce papers for his estranged wife...

Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, the directors of "American Splendor," HBO's 2011 drama "Cinema Verite" and the underrated 2010 indie "The Extra Man," return to the world of dark comedy this year with a break-out SNL star as their lead in "Imogene." Kristen Wiig, Annette Bening and Matt Dillon headline this hilarious comedy about a washed-up playwright who, after faking her own suicide as a ploy to get her ex-boyfriend's attention, winds up remanded to the custody of her wackily dysfunctional family. Darren Criss also stars. Michelle Morgan, a SNL pal of Wiig's, wrote the screenplay, and as an exec-producer, the "Bridesmaids" star has been trying to get Morgan's film off the ground for several years now. The success of "Bridesmaids" certainly helped seal the deal for "Imogene." No release date or stateside distributor yet for the film, but we presume "Imogene" will...

New York -- If you want to get a good idea of Katie Holmes, actress – as opposed to tabloid star – you can't do any better than "Pieces of April," a gem from 2003 in which she plays a ponytailed and tattooed New Yorker desperately trying to prove herself to her visiting suburban family with an improvised, downtown Thanksgiving dinner.
This was back when Holmes was transitioning out of "Dawson's Creek," that teenage soap of a fictional New England coastal town childhood. But Holmes had already amassed an early filmography that any young actress would envy, including "The Ice Storm," "Go" and "Wonder Boys."
The budget for "Pieces of April" started at $6 million, but dwindled to $300,000 and was shot over just 16 days. Writer-director Peter Hedges recalls shooting in "condemnable" buildings with paint dropping off the walls of Holmes' makeshift dressing room.

Nicole Holofcener ("Walking and Talking," "Friends With Money," and most recently "Please Give") and Shari Springer Berman ("American Splendor," "The Nanny Diaries," "The Extra Man") might make very different kinds of films, but they have at least one thing in common -- they both hate being in front of the camera. "If I wanted to be in front of the camera ..." Springer Berman started as Holofcener finished her thought for her, "you'd be Lena Dunham." "I didn't even want to take photos at my wedding," Springer Berman confessed. "I hate being photographed."
"I'm happy to take a million ugly pictures with my family and doing silly poses, but I'm never happy with staged, posed photographs, which feel fake," Holofcener. "Although my toes were in 'Please Give.' You don't even have to look hard to find them -- it's a close-up."

The Extra Man Is Too Whimsical For Its Own Good
Gives me hope of one day being a gigolo myself.
Forced to quit his prep school job after a humiliating incident, would-be dramatist Louis Ives (Paul Dano) heads to New York City, where he rents a room from has-been playwright Henry Harrison (Kevin Kline)–who earns a living escorting rich dowagers about town. Despite their huge age difference, the two develop a bond as Henry takes Louis under his wing and leads him on a series of wild adventures.
The Extra Man is a very silly film that actually works if you like a lot of those quirky situations, with a lot of quirky characters, as well. I had a couple of chuckles here and there with this film, and although it doesn’t fully make you have belly laughs, you still smile.

Craig from Dark Eye Socket here with Take Three. Today: Paul Dano
Take One: The King (2006)
Disgruntled discharged Navy man Gael García Bernal rules the roost in James Marsh’s dark religion-themed indie The King. But Dano, as the dutiful square peg brother/son in the family Bernal infiltrates, does attempt a one-man, god-fuelled backyard coup, much to his own expense. The film is partly a hothouse take on Cain & Able and partly a nod to bad-couple movies like Badlands (brooding Bernal and Sissy Spacek-a-like Pell James doing bad things in cars). Dano’s Paul Sandlow, a pastor's son, sings and plays guitar in a Jesus-heavy, quality-light church rock band. That’s when he’s not pressuring the school heads into accepting his curriculum on Intelligent Design over Evolution. Paul’s doe-eyed sappiness appears to hide a certain cleverness yet, oddly, he’s one of the most sympathetic personalities in the film.

While some questioned the star power of Kristen Wiig to carry a female-driven comedy, those doubts were quashed when Bridesmaids was deemed the sixth highest grossing romantic comedy of all time, so far.... Pretty impressive. The actress and comedian has now used her newfound star power to get the dark indie film Imogene off the ground, with Variety reporting that the movie will commence shooting on August 8. Based on a script by Michelle Morgan and to be directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini (the team behind American Splendor and, um, The Nanny Diaries and The Extra Man), Wiig will star as the title character, a New York playwright who fakes her own suicide in an attempt to win back her ex-boyfriend, only to end up back in the custody of her gambling-addicted mother.

Kristen Wiig, star of Bridesmaids, (which is now the sixth highest grossing R rated comedy of all time) is now ready to do a passion project that she has been wanting to do for over two years. It is a dark comedy titled Imogene, about a girl who pretends to kill herself in order to get her recently ex-boyfriend's attention. She ends up having to go live with her mother, who she has not seen in years and the overall story is about her homecoming and how difficult it is to find herself all over again. I love Kristen Wiig -- especially in Bridesmaids among other films. This seems like a slight departure for her, but it is nice to see an actress playing ballsy characters like the one she did in Bridesmaids. I am so used to seeing actresses like Jennifer Aniston or Katherine Heigl who have done nothing...

According to Variety, co-directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, who last directed The Extra Man, signed on to direct Michelle Morgan’s script about a New York playwright (Wiig) who fakes a suicide in order to win back her ex-boyfriend and ends up in the custody of her mother. Alix Madigan of Anonymous Content came aboard to co-produce with Celine Rattray and Trudie Styler of the new production house Maven Pictures.

Directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini are no strangers to tackling everyday characters and people who are caught within somewhat unreal circumstances. There was Harvey Pekar in "American Splendor" whose own eccentricity made him a star; Kevin Kline's Henry Harrison in "The Extra Man" who as an escort for wealthy widows was an eye-opener for Paul Dano's Louis Ives and even Annie Braddock in "The Nanny Diaries" finds herself in the strange world of the well-heeled in New York City. Thus, with "Cinema Verite," the directors find themselves firmly--if somewhat a little too comfortably--in their wheelhouse. The film goes…...

Jonathan Ames is curious. Not in the sense that he's strange - though he surmises he may have some sort of personality disorder - but rather, his unending study of human nature, a study into which he often injects himself as the subject. His unending itch has helped him build a resume that reads boxer, evening companion to the elderly, cab driver, award winning author, and now, acclaimed television show creator.
That curiosity is also why, right in the middle of giving a thoughtful answer during our interview, Ames suddenly stops, intrigued by a front page photo in the New York Times that sits on a table between us.
"I keep looking at this - it looks like a painting, from my angle. But it's a... photo," he says, voice trailing off as he moves his nose closer to the ink.

Romantic comedy No Strings Attached, starring Academy Award winner Natalie Portman (Black Swan) and Ashton Kutcher (Killers), will be on DVD and Blu-ray on May 10 from Paramount Home Entertainment.
In the R-rated romance, Portman and Kutcher play friends with benefits, but things start to get complicated when they begin to wonder if there could be more to their relationship. The movie has good comedy pedigree, directed by Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters) and starring Kevin Kline (The Extra Man), Cary Elwes (Robin Hood: Men in Tights), Lake Bell (It’s Complicated) and Mindy Kaling (TV’s The Office).
The film grossed a nice $70 million in theaters even though it got mixed reviews from ciritcs. Richard Roeper said it’s, “one of the better romantic comedies in the last couple of years,” but New York Post’s Lou Lumenick said, “The movie quickly sinks into a terminal case of the cutes and extreme predictability.

We know you were losing sleep over it, so we're happy to be the first to tell you that Furry Vengeance and Yogi Bear are both eligible to be nominated for Best Screenplay Oscars on January 25. Also that Marmaduke score that has been wearing out your iPod? It's eligible too. However, the inclusion of these 2010 masterpieces really isn't that big a surprise. With final nominations just over a month away the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that 241 screenplays - 134 original and 107 adapted - are eligible for a Best Screenplay nomination and that music from 77 films is eligible for Best Original Score (not including Black Swan, The Fighter or The Kids Are All Right [1]). Add those to the 248 films eligible [2] for Best Picture and Oscar voters have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks. Kind of. See the full lists, the favorites and read the rules after the jump.

The AMPAS have named 241 scripts eligible for the Academy Awards — 134 original, 107 adapted. Unlike the WGA, Winter’s Bone, King’s Speech, Toy Story 3, Never Let Me Go, and How to Train Your Dragon will be considered.
The AMPAS have also released the list of nominees for best score. The list was narrowed down to 77 scores, which makes Best Original Score the 2011 Oscar the category with the least number of films under consideration. The scores for Black Swan, True Grit, The Kids Are Alright and The Fighter will not be eligible to compete this year. Clint Mansell‘s Black Swan score and Carter Burwell‘s True Grit score were disqualified attributed to a designation within Rule 16 of the Academy’s Special Rules for Music Awards (5d under “Eligibility”), which excludes “scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other pre-existing music.” Meanwhile, the scores for The Kids Are All Right,...

Hollywoodnews.com: The Writers Guild of America revealed the films that will be eligible for this year’s Writers Guild Awards, and the lists – both Original and Adapted – are noteworthy for the titles that are not in the running.
“Toy Story 3” and “How to Train Your Dragon,” for instance, were declared ineligible. Other titles left out of the running include “Blue Valentine,” “Biutiful,” “Another Year,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” “Never Let Me Go” and “The Ghost Writer.”
But the screenplay for “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” made the cut. Thank God.
