Not bad

An overall decent episode. Nothing special, though the story was interesting. It's getting ridiculous that the writers of this show either haven't seen the older episodes, or they just pretend that they haven't. Kent Brockman already won $130 million in the lottery in season 3.

Do the writers not look at previous episodes?
HUPextreme30 April 2022
The fact that bleeding gums was previously portraid as having no family with Lisa being the only one attending his funeral and for some reason now all of a sudden having a child he very much loved and cared for?

The fact that Doctor Hibbert is also his long long brother mentioned in a previous episode was not brought up despite the interaction between the two in this episode.

It's a shame that the writers can't recall historic plots at all for the legacy fanbase maybe that's what the missing element is.

Simpson's CODA
bear177611 April 2022
After the Oscars the Simpsons creates their own deaf episode with Lisa finding the son of Bleeding Gums who happens to be deaf. With a thrown in Will Smith joke as well it's a weak attempt of the Simpsons making fun of pop culture.

The Sound of Bleeding Gums

Warning: Spoilers
I think if you cling on to the original canon then you'll only end up bitter and disappointed. The show at this point was thirty three years old (yes, you did read that right - 33) and in order to keep it fresh the show had to make this change to the timeline.

Do they abuse it? Oh gosh yes. Here we see many fine examples of that.

However, taken on its own merit there's a lot to like, and I certainly don't see this episode as being in the same league of ones to bring the show into disrepute as those that littered the period after the so-called golden age.

There's some nice moments, there's a sense of heart - canon aside this was fine.

This sucks.

Warning: Spoilers
Here's why: Lisa acts like pretentious and smug like a narcissist, they forgot Kent won the lottery many many episodes ago, the sliding timeline that makes the logic about Lisa being Bleeding Gums' "fan" at 8 incoherent, suddenly there are immediately many songs made after Bleeding Gums's "own son," 'Sax on the Beach' used to be the only album he ever released in this episode yet they made it sound like he had more, the repetitive jokes about repetiton become less funny after the first time they repeat, Bleeding Gums' family life is somehow both separate and not separate from his performer life, they forgot that Hibbert and Bleeding Gums are relatives, Round Springfield specifies that he never had a family despite the laywer somehow knows he had a son, and it's presented on Smartline as if everyone knew he had a son except Lisa, his son is able to afford a nice house despite being unable to afford a cochlear implant, the emotional moments are genuine but they happen so instantaneous that it doesn't even matter-- they lack the gradual buildup that Moaning Lisa and Lisa's Substitute have-- and the plot never gets anywhere with Lisa's adventure. It takes her 4 minutes to get to the record place and oh suddenly she's apologizing to Monk the next minute then the episode's over after one sweet sequence.

The only funny humor in the whole episode was the Disney+ joke where they literally outright mock Disney+ as if they want to be canceled, and that joke where the guy slips on the floor-- especially when all of the fluid animation was wasted on that.

I will acknowledge that it's heartwarming and creative creative that the conflict of the episode was about how Bleeding Gums's song was used without permission and his son would have never been able to tell because he's deaf and despite being able to read lips, he still can't tell because the song is being played in the background and the words are different. But it's executed so badly that it doesn't even touch the viewer's heart for most of the time.

No wonder this got below a million viewers.

Solid episode
jjchiofalo19 May 2022
While not a funny episode, it was overall solid with a strong storyline. Sure, it doesn't work continuity perfectly, but it's ridiculous to be such a massive fanatic that you'll hate an episode for that. Don't read comics if that's how you feel.

Not possible

Unless you move away from the canon, Bleeding Gums had a funeral which NO ONE but Lisa attended, so how could he have a family? As far as the character went he was more than alone, his pal was his saxophone. Simpsons has really declined, time to stop methinks.

A great return of a classic character
j-libran11 April 2022
Bleeding Gums never had a great quantity of episodes, but the few he did have were of truly exceptional quality. This episode is no different. It was great getting some more backstory on this classic character. The songs were a lot of fun and I very much enjoyed that the show made use of actual deaf voice actors for the first time.

Zero comedy here
captaintetanus26 April 2022
Not funny. Just a boring story. The Simpson s isn't intended to be a drama but more episodes each season are basically drama. Did they fire all the comedy writers??

This is not the show I used to know and love

Warning: Spoilers
Yet another shoehorned character to satisfy the woke crowd. I haven't watched the show in two years or more and I tuned into this one just to see where they were. Too bad. I wish I hadn't. I'll go back to watching season 1 through 15 now thanks. It's time to end this mess. It was time when they switched character voices. Or maybe 10 years ago when they had a talking rag in the cockamamie episode.

But enough is enough. It's not funny, it doesn't make sense, it pays no attention to the history of the show and it's just plain boring.

This show has become a steppingstone for Hollywood writers trying to get a foothold. It used to be a destination, now it's a start. Hopefully the show has finally become unprofitable and will soon be canceled.

Heartbreaking what has happened to this once glorious and beloved franchise.
