Dakota Johnson has talked about the experience of filming superhero spin-off Madame Web – in particular acting against a blue screen for its effects sequences.
In a relatively quiet year for superhero movies, Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off, Madame Web, is the first of 2024’s offerings to emerge – it’s out in February in the UK.
Dakota Johnson stars as Cassandra Web, the titular heroine whose psychic powers give her the ability to see into the future. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Johnson describes the film as more “human and grounded” than most superhero fare, though that doesn’t mean it isn’t without its action set-pieces.
In fact, Johnson hints that she was quite perturbed by the CGI-heavy sections of the film in which she was asked to perform in front of a blue screen as people off-camera yelled stage directions.

The theft of a valuable Native American artifact triggers a cascading series of violent crimes in Americana, a revisionist Western set in present-day South Dakota. Writer-director Tony Tost brings his years of experience on similarly themed episodic series like Damnation and Longmire to his directing debut, an ensemble feature with multiple overlapping storylines. The plot premise for Americana concerns a Lakota nation “ghost shirt,” a garment fashioned from animal skin that was thought to be instilled with special powers for adherents of the ghost dance, a late 19th century Native American religious movement.
Although stylistically and thematically a Western, the borderline comedic tone of Tost’s script, along with frequent gratuitous violence, rapid-fire dialogue and a non-linear narrative structure, suggest Americana is more of a hybrid crime drama in the Tarantino mold. The film’s appeal for genre enthusiasts should also be enhanced by the appearance of multi-platinum singer-songwriter Halsey in her first dramatic role,...

Krapopolis could spawn Fox’s next iconic animated figure to sit alongside Homer Simpson, Bob Belcher and Peter Griffin, according to the network’s President of Scripted Programming Michael Thorn.
Dan Harmon’s show has been handed an unprecedented season three renewal prior to airing a single episode and been pushed back to the 2023-24 season, news revealed yesterday afternoon by Deadline. Fox is in London this week shopping the title to international buyers.
Speaking to Deadline prior to a Krapopolis screening, Michael Thorn said his team had “found the voice of the characters, concept and comedy exceptionally quickly.”

Helena Bonham Carter has been gracing our screens for almost 40 years now.
Her often-wild, curly hair, thick eyebrows and loud cackle have become synonymous with a slightly off-the-wall character performance.
She was, however, first typecast as a virginal “English rose” in films such as A Room With a View (1985), helping to reinforce the Hollywood stereotype of the English as tea-sipping, bonnet-wearing toffs.
In fairness to the casting agents, though, arisocrat is a role Bonham Carter was born into. Her great-grandfather is H H Asquith, prime minister of the United Kingdom during the first half of World War One. Her uncle, Mark Bonham Carter, once dated Princess Margaret – a figure she would later play in The Crown.
Nevertheless, the quaint Victorian heroine shtick was never going to last.

MultiVersus really puts the “multi” in “multiplayer.” After all, most of the platform fighter’s chaotic matches consist of two players using every power, strategy, and combo available to them to take down another team of two trying to do the same. Since teamwork is at the forefront of the MultiVersus experience, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it wants everyone to play (relatively) nice. As such, the game offers a novel, if strange, way of letting players say “Gg.”
Throughout the myriad of instructional pages in MultiVersus, players will find references to something called “Toast.” An icon for that same item greets gamers who visit the Collection tab, and, after each match, players are even offered the option to give their opponents and allies a piece of the collectible carb.
That’s nice and all, but it seems that many MultiVersus players still have a lot of questions about that strange item.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s lost 2001 LP Toast is finally arriving July 8, and you can check out the track “Standing In The Light of Love” right now.
Young started Toast at Toast Studios in San Francisco in early 2001 shortly before he headed down to South America with Crazy Horse for a tour. “The back door opened onto an alley,” Young wrote last year on the Neil Young Archives. “It was so stuffy in there that we left the door open until one day we saw rats coming in and out.

Her joyous 2018 smash “Toast” earned her spots on two of Barack Obama’s coveted playlists, and in 2019 she became the first woman to win the Grammy for Best Reggae Album. British broadcasting heavyweight Michael Grade has predicted another UK channel will pick up Neighbours, which Channel 5 said it will stop funding over the weekend.
The much-loved 37-year-old Australian soap will stop airing in six months if producer Fremantle fails to find another UK co-commissioner. Australia’s Network Ten part funds the show for its 10 Peach channel but will not pay the full amount.
Grade, a former BBC One Controller, ITV Executive Chair and Channel 4 CEO, who has been linked with buying Channel 4 if it were to be privatized, predicted Fremantle will comfortably find a buyer.
“It’s got a readymade audience,” he added, speaking to this morning’s Today program on BBC Radio 4.
“It may not have the audience size that Channel 5 needs to keep the advertisers happy but someone will pick it up. It’s a big brand and will get a lot of publicity.”

What We Do In the Shadows actor Matt Berry will revive his cult character, Steven Toast, after six years — and the comedy has been swooped up by the BBC after it originally aired on Channel 4.
BBC One and iPlayer have commissioned Objective Fiction to make six-part Toast Of Tinseltown (working title), which will spotlight eccentric and arrogant actor Toast as he attempts to become a movie star in Hollywood.
It follows three seasons of the show broadcasting on Channel 4 under the Toast Of London title. Berry, who co-writes the series with Arthur Mathews, won a BAFTA for his performance as Toast in 2015.
Berry said Toast would “very much approve” of the comedy’s move to the BBC, while Mathews added: “Hollywood is a brave new world for Toast. There will be triumphs and tribulations (but mostly tribulations – and indeed humiliations).”

A fan recently reached out to Neil Young about his 76-year-old Uncle Eddie, expressing concern that Eddie won’t live long enough to hear all of Young’s archival releases. “That really bums me out,” Young wrote on his archives site, then outlined a potential plan to release an enormous cache of unreleased material to paid subscribers of the Archives long before it’s made available to the general public.

In September 2018, Spotify announced a new “Global Cultures Initiative,” hoping to increase intercontinental musical exchange, and, ideally, transform more local non-Western hits into global phenomena. “We have launched numerous high-profile playlists and programs in the recent past,” Rocio Guerrero, then Head of Global Cultures at Spotify, said in September 2018. “But Global Cultures is poised to become one of the most important things we are doing as a leader in the field of streaming audio.”

I've never been one to listen to melancholic pop songs on repeat, but Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Claud gave me a taste of this unique happy-sad feeling, and now I'm hooked.
After recently listening to their soothing lo-fi poppy song "Miss You," I felt like I was a teenager trapped in an '80s movie full of new-wave club nights, high-school drama, and awkward crushes. When I recently hopped on the phone with Claud, I was determined to figure out their process. According to the 20-year-old singer, it all began with meeting their best friend, Josh Mehling, on the first day at Syracuse University in the Fall of 2017.
"We started just making music together," they recalled. "He taught me how to communicate with music and through songs." The friendship between Claud and Mehling has since lead to many collaborations, and eventually Claud's first Ep, Toast, was released in August 2018. "Collaboration became a...

As the demand for premium TV drama amps up the competition for top talent, independent producers have been battling with deep-pocketed global groups for access to the best actors, writers and directors. But it is often the strength of the creative relationships that matters more than commercial affiliations.
One example is Fable Pictures’ “Saint Mazie,” which creative directors Faye Ward and Hannah Farrell are developing alongside Helena Bonham Carter. Ward got to know the actress, who will star in and be a producer on the limited series, on the films “Toast” and “Suffragette” while Ward was at Ruby Films. Fable is working with two other actors in a similar vein, developing characters they’d like to portray and stories they’d love to tell.
“To have such passion entrenched in a story or a character from early on is hugely beneficial,” Farrell says.

Sony Pictures Television has invested in drama indie Fable Pictures – the fledgling indie run by The Crown [pictured] producer Faye Ward.
Fable Pictures was established earlier this year by former Ruby Film & Television exec Ward and Rastamouse producer Eugenio Perez.
Sony has taken a minority stake in the business, marking the Hollywood studio’s first UK drama move since it acquired Left Bank Pictures in 2012.
Last year Wayne Garvie, Sony’s chief creative officer, international production, told Screen’s sister publication Broadcast: “I feel we’re a bit underrepresented in scripted,” Garvie says. “I’d like us to do something else there.”

Renowned British filmmaker Mike Leigh and the Cannes Film Festival have history. His films have always been well-received there, and his 1996 adoption drama, Secrets And Lies, won the Palme d’Or at that year’s festivities. He served on the festival jury himself in 1997, where he famously butted heads with then Jury President, Isabelle Adjani, and now, he has returned with his latest project, Mr. Turner, which is screening in competition.
Mr. Turner sees regular Leigh collaborator Timothy Spall (The King’s Speech) play the famous British painter, J.M.W. Turner, in a period drama exploring the last 25 years of his life, which ended in 1851. The synopsis of the film, as presented at Cannes, gives a more in-depth view:
“Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits sexually, [Turner] forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom...

In "Toast," a film adaption of famed cook Nigel Slater's memoir, Nigel -- played by Freddie Highmore -- has been bewitched with food since childhood. After losing his rather cooking-challenged mother, his father hires a house keeper, Mrs. Potter, (Helena Bonham Carter), and she quickly takes her place in the home -- and his father's heart.
As Nigel ages, his love of cooking emerges from under the covers and it's a full-fledged war between step-son and step-mother. However, Highmore himself has grown tremendously since his 2005 debut in Tim Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."
Hollywood has the reputation of ruining its child stars, yet the 19-year-old British star has managed to avoid that dangerous path, and he's remained relatively unfazed by celebrity culture.
In an interview with The Huffington Post, Highmore talks becoming Nigel Slater for "Toast," having his first on screen gay kiss and growing up Hollywood.

David Lynch, London & Edinburgh
Has Lynch really retired? Maybe not, but you get the feeling he has done all he can and he's created a body of work that only gets stronger with age. Gillian Anderson, best known for playing Agent Scully in The X Files, has been unveiled as the new face of Charles Dickens' tormented Miss Havisham, in the BBC's festive adaptation of Great Expectations.
The American actress looks every bit the jilted bride imagined in the Victorian classic, but her performance is sure to be measured against that of Helena Bonham Carter, who is playing the same character in a production to be released next year to coincide with Dickens' 200th anniversary.
The 43-year-old may be best known for her dealings with the supernatural, but she's also previously proven she can do period drama, having been nominated for BAFTA, Emmy and Golden Globe awards for her role as Lady Dedlock in the BBC adaptation of Bleak House in 2005.
The production also stars Ray Winstone as the dastardly Abel Magwitch, David Suchet as Miss Havisham's lawyer, Mr Jaggers, and Douglas Booth...
