Sad, cute, violent, and deep.
Amthermandes21 May 2022
Yeah, it's a good story. Maybe with too "fairy tale" of an ending, but maybe that's because it's not only an allegory of the evils and horrors of war, but also a display of hope, that war can not only come to an end, but arrive at a conclusion that is met with mutual admiration and newfound respect.

It's extremely violent for a light-hearted message, and with such cute rats too. But a solid story.

Make whiskey, not war.

Cute and gory in equal part, and a surprise moral to the story. This is basically a fairy tale for grown men, and I mean that in the best way possible.

The Ratpocolypse
This episode was awesome. The animation was well done, the gore was effective, and the overall tone was brilliant. The right balance of humor and action. Kill Team Kill episode could learn a lot from this one, as it's obvious these episodes were made by entirely different teams.

Welcome to the Ratpocalypse.

Warning: Spoilers
Mason's Rats is a clever episode, an allegory for war and how bloody awful it can be regardless of which side of the conflict you lie. The whole idea of war going on without actually looking, kept behind closed doors, is such a clever way of interpreting conflicts across the world.

That ending, with Mason seeing all the rats brutally slaughtered and killed, is eye-opening and very revealing when you stop to think about how this parallels drone warfare and armies using high-tech machines to take out enemy forces.

The turn-around at the end is a nice way of closing the chapter on a positive note, with the two sides eventually reconciling their differences and realizing that war is hell and not worth the price paid to see things through to the end.

loved it.
Funny, bloody, and violent. The horror fanatic in me loved the blood and gore. Its kind of like a NC-17 version of the wile e coyote and roadrunner cartoons I grew up with. Instead of wile e coyote, you have a Scottish farmer buying technology to get rid of his rat problem. Instead of ACME Company, you have a salesman selling the farmer all kinds of devices and draining his wallet. The Rats are the Road Runner. It makes for a hilarious adult targeted cartoon.

In the end, the story theme has a good point about working together instead of working against each other. A good message we need today.

Loved the ending!

Another fun episode that was surprisingly unpredictable. I assumed the rats would just keep killing the machine, and mason would have to keep getting a new upgrade. Instead what we got was an epic battle between the rats and the machine. I did not expect mason to destroy his machine and join the rats. Because of the twist ending and the battle scene, I'll give this episode a 7/10.

One of my favourite episodes!

Love, Death + Robots: Mason's Rats (2022) follows a farmer who finds he has a pest problem when the rats on his farm start fighting back. This episode had a fun and silly concept, and I was impressed! I had a lot of fun with it, and found it funny! It's definitely one of the strongest episodes of this season.

The animation was really good but it wasn't as unique as other animation showcased in the series as it was a bit too goofy however I did like the attention to detail! The setting was really beautiful too, and it was quite visually gruesome without being too overbearing!

The sound design was pretty good, and added to the fast and action packed nature of the episode. Also, I really liked the bagpipes used in the score, it was super fun to listen to!

I really liked the voice action for this one, and I found the main character to be funny and likeable! The humour in this episode made me chuckle quite a lot, which I was pleased with as I don't usually like the humour in this show. Also, I appreciated how the writers managed to give a weird sense of humanity to the rats and made the audience really sympathise with them!

The episode was very fast paced and action packed, there was never a dull moment! I thought it was the perfect length too, it told a very simple story quickly but effectively and was super engaging. I also really liked the wholesome and sweet ending!

Far-fetched ending
FilmManRetaliates21 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I was expecting something better. The co-existence shown at the end, right after the fight, was forced, too quick (you just become friends with your enemy who has been killing your friends and family just that quick, huh?) and out of place.

Great to hear Craig Farguson's voice though!

again the formula: violence + gore vs smart story
Shadowboy_25cm30 May 2022
This episode is well done technically, starts with an interesting premisse, but the further story falls apart and loses itself in gore and action and finalizes with an unmotivated moral in the end that misses the satirical concept of this show.

The rats are well-done, the characters are efficient. This episode is just a fun ride, not more, nor less.

A one-time forgetable watch.

He changed his mind!
MovieMattic25 May 2022
I really enjoyed watching this one because the farmer ends up having a change of mind. The tech was cool, the rats were awesome. There were some really bloody scenes which were fun to watch. What more can you ask for?

Pretty Good

Warning: Spoilers
I remember the short story and this is a decent short version of that short story. There were some bits missing because this version ends at the truce between the farmer and the rats. Wheteas the text has them team up against a different enemy.

That aside there was real humour and pathos. The salesman was terrific. The auto pest control was just so over the top. Very well done.

Why don't the rats just leave?
AluminumWolf4 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
First warning: If you find furry animals to be cute, be prepared to see them get massacred.

So if these guys have evolved to a point of making tools, weaponry, and beverages; couldn't they do some critical thinking? If star wars like artillery is being deployed and literally pulverizing your kind to a pulp, just go. What's the huge incentive for staying at this barn anyways? Find one that's less patrolled.

Better yet the rats can build their own civilization away from humans if they have this kind of intellect. Considering that they are trespassing, the farm owner has a just cause for trying to get them out of his barn. Set up a town down in the middle of a field somewhere and now you should be fine. Land developers come? Start shooting, that'll probably get them to leave.

Also why the hell did there need to be this much gore? And the pet cat dying wouldn't lead me to asking for a discount. I'd be filing a lawsuit.

Giving this a 4 because the animation, art style and voice acting was good. It also kept me entertained throughout the whole 10 minutes with all the pew-pew stuff going on.

Weird, but it works
detlic23 May 2022
This episode is totally unexpected and awkward, but for some reason, it works and is surprisingly enjoyable to watch.

Goofy, crazy and entertaining with a decent "moral" in the end.

Rats Vs Robots
holy_big_sandwich6 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Mason (Craig Ferguson) of "Mason's Rats" is a foul mouthed Scottish farmer who has a problem every farmer must contend with at some point, rats. But these aren't just any rats, they're organized rats. Set in the near future with some hand waiving pseudo-biology, the rats have advanced to an early technological age. Their society resembling that of the 11th century Scottish clan's themselves, with rudimentary swords and bows for warfare. So Mason calls an exterminator to handle these vermin, but this is sci-fi after all. The exterminator is a cheesy salesmen peddling auto pest killing lasers and most terrifying of all a pint sized chrome murderbot.

Where the fun lies in this brisk 10 minute short is watching the tug-of-war between the farmer and the early rat civilization. Its easy to empathize with Mason's grouchy charm and pest problem. But quickly the viewer begins rooting for the rats. As the 80's caricature of a used car salesmen deploys more hi-tech modes of dealing with the rats, the rats outsmart their exterminator. This leads to a veritable arms race where we no longer feel threatened by the tiny creatures but instead join their cause.

After some absolutely gruesome rat genocide by the latest murderbot, we find our hearts (and Mason's) completely won over by their tiny last stand. To see such cold calculated death rain down on a minuscule species carving out their own place in a human dominated world, transforms them from pests to people.

Its in the last moments when Mason has had enough with the bloodshed and ends the war, that a possible harmony between rat and man glimmers. Could such an accord be reached or would a "rise of the planet of the apes" be the only outcome? One things for sure, "Mason's Rats" is a bloody, glorious and charming short that treats its 4 legged mammals as hero's of their own tale.

Mason Deathon Line
southdavid11 August 2022
Netflix's "Love, Death and Robots" series returns for a Third run. Overall, I enjoyed the first two seasons and wrote short individual reviews for each episode and I think I'll take the same approach here.

Fearing an influx of Rats on his largely roboticised farm, Mason (Craig Ferguson) engages an extermination firm and Nigel (Dan Stevens) sells him a top of the line laser defence. His rats though, have been at the genetically modified seeds and are smarter than anticipated. When they knock out the system, Mason upgrades to a lethal vindictive variant - but even he comes to wonder if it's overkill.

Really liked the look of this one, it's CGI characters, with an basis of realism but with some stylised exaggerations to them. The robot scorpion was sleek and terrifying, relative to the mundane robotics that are in use on the rest of the farm. The vocal performances were good, though admittedly most of Craig Ferguson's were muttering.

It was a decent short story though and a complete one, rather than one that felt like just the opening of one. Neal Asher also wrote "Bad Travelling" this season, which again was a tight but complete story.

Doesn't outstay it's welcome and is a fun time whilst it's on.

Fantastic episode from top to bottom.
dangubicmilos7 June 2022
It's a rare occasion where you can say that every single second of the episode was great. Mason's Rats definitely has that quality.

Storytelling, plot twist, animation, sound... you name it.

I would love to see a sequel down the road, for sure.

Impressive story, setting and animations. I enjoyed this succinct story, quick and effective. The rats who are so much more evolved put up a decent fight. Quite a nice ending to the episode.

Is this an anti-retribution piece?
jarelivory11 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The animation is super solid, so is the voice acting, but it feels like an allegory for forgiving those who have killed your people and overall wronged you.

It like there telling us to forgive the rich for starving the poor, because the rich decide not to totally kill all of us.

Not for me
thia12347 June 2022
If you're an animal person skip this one. I know we aren't supposed to care about rats but it just made me sad. Little creatures squealing for their lives and pets dying doesn't entertain me. I feel like I watched a different episode.

garabedian12323 May 2022
So its another All humans should clearly die episode...where instead of something happening at the end...nothing happens and they make up....

Cause I definitely want to make up to the person that just killed thousands of my brothers and sisters

This episode made me sick and I was only finishing it cause i thought the rats were going to rise and wipe out humanity.

Oh, rats!
Pjtaylor-96-13804426 May 2022
'Mason's Rats (2022)' is kind of the epitome of 'Love, Death & Robots (2019- )': pretty, bloody, irreverent but ultimately hollow. That's not to imply that the show doesn't have its highlights, but by and large it's a very middling experience. This short film, part of the show's third season, has a distinct aesthetic and enjoyable animation. In general, it looks great. Its story lacks depth, though, and it ultimately feels a little fruitless. It gets a bit repetitive despite its short length and its payoff isn't powerful enough to make it set-up feel fully worth it. Still, it's entertaining enough to pass the time. It's fine.

One of my least favourite episode
ladyliliroche20 May 2022
The animation is beautiful, the concept is intriguing but the gore was too much for me. I know it is just an animation, I know it is a rat, but in the end it was too much and went overboard with it.
