Cinematographer Jannicke Mikkelsen is used to working with non-traditional filmmaking techniques, methods and in unique environments. In fact, it’s kind of her thing. Over the last decade, the Norwegian film director and cinematographer has solved innovative tech challenges with and for David Attenborough, the rock band Queen, Apollo11’s 50th-anniversary installation for NASA and was a mission specialist — their videographer and data manager — aboard the 2019 World Record flight polar circumnavigating Earth.
Most recently, she was the VFX cinematographer for “Stowaway,” a Netflix release starring Anna Kendrick, Toni Collette, Shamier Anderson and Daniel Dae Kim about a perilous journey to Mars that is compromised when an extra passenger shows up.
“Usually,” says Mikkelsen, “visual effects are kept separate from film production, which has never made sense to me, especially if you’re like you’re shooting a sci-fi, a VFX-heavy movie or a 3D movie. With ‘Stowaway,’ the lines did blur more,...

In case you somehow haven’t already heard, Resident Evil 8 is officially happening.
Capcom’s long-rumored sequel made its debut yesterday as part of Sony’s pre-recorded PlayStation 5 showcase, confirming a ton of leaks in the process. Ethan Winters, the unwitting hero of 2017’s Resident Evil 7, will indeed find himself embroiled in another nightmare in next year’s installment, which will also star fan favourite Chris Redfield, though not as you know him. The only brief glimpse we caught of the former S.T.A.R.S. member depicted him killing what appears to be an unarmed civilian in cold blood in front of Ethan, though we believe it likely that the situation is far more complex than the trailer is letting on.
We’ll no doubt be privy to more story teasers in August when Capcom previews more of the series’ eighth mainline entry, but the developer doesn’t...

If this year has one good thing going for it, it’s the fact that so many great RPGs have been remade for modern platforms. The new versions of both Final Fantasy VII and Trials of Mana are just two that have been released so far, and joining in on the remake trend, Nintendo has released a remastered version of a classic Wii RPG for the Switch. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition takes the great elements from the original release and gives them a nice solid polish into the modern era.
As you’d expect, all the beloved moments of the journey remain intact, but now the game looks different, sounds different, and even plays a little faster. There’s also an additional story chapter called “Future Connected,” which serves as a sizable epilogue that adds even more to an already lengthy title. Thankfully, “Future Connected” can be played at any time from the main menu,...

Ruggero Deodato’s 1980 film Cannibal Holocaust is a horror classic. It pioneered what would become known as the found footage genre, which eventually spawned classics like The Blair Witch Project, Rec and the Paranormal Activity movies. It tells the tale of an American film crew becoming lost and brutally murdered in the Amazon rainforest, with the footage being discovered later.
Cannibal Holocaust is notoriously violent, with the gore being so realistic that authorities assumed that Deodato made a real snuff film. He was even charged with the murder of cast members. His defense wasn’t helped by the fact that the cast had agreed to lay low for a year so the director could make audiences believe in the movie’s fiction. Fortunately, he managed to get in touch with them before he was convicted and got them to confirm that they hadn’t actually been fed to cannibals.

Three-time Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor Rob Legato has translated virtual production into a live-action methodology that serves as recognizable filmmaking tools for such directors as James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, and Jon Favreau. That’s because Legato, who’s also a cinematographer, has emphasized photographic realism in VFX.
After successfully morphing live-action footage with VFX on “Titanic,” Legato tackled virtual production more forcefully on Scorsese’s Howard Hughes biopic, “The Aviator.” He had to photograph a plane crash for the first time, so he ingeniously used animation software and a hand-operated pan-and-tilt wheel to photograph a plane crash live in real-time.
Then Legato took a bold step with his “director-centric” workflow for “Avatar,” which enabled Cameron to make his revolutionary sci-fi hybrid. With a customized hand-held virtual camera, Legato gave Cameron a powerful tool for camera layout on a motion capture stage.
Legato refined the virtual production process further with Scorsese on “Hugo.

“You wouldn’t know it, but it’s a feel-good musical,” quipped juror Dan Mirvish, co-founder of Slamdance, who presented the award.
Mexican short films also beat out other contenders from the region with Toronto-based multihyphenate-juror Nicole Brooks – who showed off her prodigious dancing skills to kick off the event – giving out the best short prizes.

Neill Blompkamp's Oats Studios has released the third episode of a CG animated sci-fi series called Adam, which Blomkamp created and directed. The series is developed using the real-time rendering engine called Unity, which is also used for the creation of video games. As you'll see, it offers some pretty cool visuals.
The series is set in the distant future, and the story revolves around a robot named Adam who confusingly wakes up to find he’s being released into a world with other robots just him. You can see that he’s a felon with a digital screen on his chest that reads, “Adam M. Thomas - Felony Code 227900". After they are released, they are confronted with two mysterious bounty hunter-type characters who remove the felony code and free them.

Director Neill Blomkamp breaks some different ground with his latest Oats Studio short film, Adam: The Mirror. It's the first of this series of shorts not done in live action, for one thing, with the entire short animated and rendered in the Unity video game engine. And it's also the first of these that clearly is not intended as a stand alone project, instead working as a prologue and entry point into a much larger world and much larger story. Blomkamp mines some familiar post apocalyptic elements here but puts a fresh spin on them ... don't want to say too much about the story here but check it out below!...

“Rick and Morty” is one of the best-looking animated series on TV. As high-concept as these travels through technicolor dreamlands and psychedelic wormholes can get, “Rick and Morty” wouldn’t be what it is without some talented performers bringing the show’s characters to life.
In Season 3, series co-creator Justin Roiland did more of the heavy lifting than ever before (including anchoring an entire episode by his lonesome). But, as usual, this now-finished season also drew on some incredible voice talent for some one-off delights. Some of these guest stars were such a natural fit for the show that it’s surprising it took this long for the show to utilize their talents. (How did two whole seasons go by before a pair of “Community” folks showed up?)

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Rick and Morty” Season 3, Episode 4, “Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender.”]
At its best, “Rick and Morty” is a show that’s been able to take the basic, ordinary parts of human life and spin them into grand, misshapen sci-fi horrors. Dogs taking over the world, parasites taking over happy memories, and a school dance becoming the platform for an army of Cronenbergs all came from a simple premise warped so fully that the result was twisted, unrecognizable bliss.
“Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender” is an episode as deceptive as its title. What starts as a means for a “Guardians of the Galaxy”-style adventure against a looming foe gets the “Rick and Morty” treatment by putting that formula in reverse. It’s no surprise that this show would take a premise with unlimited possibilities and trap this supersquad in a simplistic “Saw”-bstacle course. Even if some of it feels a little familiar, at least it’s sending things in a different direction.

2016 marks a very peculiar year for Assassin’s Creed fans in the sense that, for the first time since 2009, Ubisoft has decided to order its clandestine juggernaut on a one-year hiatus. The reasoning behind that absence is two-fold: firstly, off the back of Syndicate and in particular Unity‘s technical flaws, Ubi deemed that AC‘s annualized nature was actually beginning to impede on the quality of the end product.
On the other hand, and perhaps more importantly for moviegoers, Ubisoft’s decision lends some breathing space to the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie. Pegged for a late December release, the live-action historical actioner heralds a Macbeth reunion thanks to the inclusion of director Justin Kurzel, Marion Cotillard and Michael Fassbender, who was instrumental in getting the video game movie off the ground early on in development.

There's always time to fit some sci-fi into your day. This short film is actually a demo of a new live rendering engine for video games, but it's pretty damn cool and worth watching anyway. The short is called Adam, directed by Veselin Efremov, and is set in the distant future. The plot seems to involve a robot (named Adam) waking up and discovering he is being released with many others just like him but is considered to be a criminal - the screen on his chest reads "Adam M. Thomas - Felony Code 227900". Upon release, they encounter two mysterious bounty hunter-like characters that remove the felony code and let them be free. I like the visual storytelling in this, and it seems like there's much more to this world worth exploring. Enjoy. Thanks to Nothing Cooler for the tip. Description from YouTube: "The Adam demo is a real-time-rendered short...

In accordance with previous reports, Ubisoft has announced plans to place Assassin’s Creed on a one-year hiatus, with the core dev team now “stepping back and re-examining the franchise” to prepare for a 2017 release.
As a result, for the first time in seven years 2016 will not herald a new entry in the tentpole franchise, despite that fact that Ubisoft Motion Pictures’ live-action feature film – one starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard – is still poised to take flight in December.
Per Ubisoft:
“We’ve also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a premier open-world franchise,” the company stated. “We’re taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin’s Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone’s playground.”

So Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 finally came out, and lo and behold, it’s a total trainwreck. Not even in an old-school “Oh, if you hit this jump just right, you can get 5x more air'” kind of way, but more in a “Just how in the name of a jet ski-riding Jesus did it get out the door?!”-type deal.
Coming in a year that – until this point – was far stronger overall than 2014’s disastrously buggy output (Assassin’s Creed: Unity’s faceless Arno being a particular highlight), Thps 5 was meant to be one glorious trip back to your childhood memories, a game that would embellish and reinforce a series that for a time, actually became a total cultural revolution.
A perfected control scheme that just felt instantly rewarding, the legendary soundtrack – you could even unlock everyone from a secret Matt Hoffman bike level to Spider-Man in the sequel.

Dead Drop #1
Writer – Ales Kot
Artist – Adam Gorham
Colourist – Michael Spicer
Letterer – Dave Sharpe
Publisher – Valiant Entertainment
Valiant has been putting the pedal to the metal in 2015 through their multiple mini series’ alone. The Valiant brought upon an epic tale that felt like a historically twisted fairy tale in which some major players in the Valiant universe played a key role, and Divinity revealed a new and very powerful individual whose abilities from the far reaches of the cosmos have been brought to Earth. With a wide array of absolute top-notch creative teams on these books alone, the trifecta, the triumvirate, the third eye, if you will, is now found within the team behind Dead Drop.
It doesn’t take very long for the action to take hold and grab you. The opening page shows a graceful Aric Dacia, better known as X-o Manowar, flying rapidly down overtop Times Square in New York City.

A few weeks ago, while working on my review of the “Parks and Recreation” episode “Save Jj’s,” I asked people on Twitter for the name of one of the show’s weirder recurring characters, the creepy, heavily-tattooed owner of Pawnee’s pawn shop. My followers identified him as Herman Lerpiss — and, better, pointed out that there have been a lot of characters named Lerpiss in Pawnee over the years, often with far more elaborate biographies than has ever been suggested on the show itself. This made me realize that, while I have interviewed “Parks” co-creator Mike Schur many times over the years about major developments for Leslie, Ron, April, Andy, and the rest of the show’s main characters (you can read some of those interviews here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here , here and here), I’d barely scratched the surface of all the crazy background characters...

Alien: Isolation features heavily in the nominees for this year's BAFTA Games Awards. Here's the full list...
In March, BAFTA turns its gaze on the videogames industry for its annual Games Awards. Among the nominees, some of the biggest games of last year feature heavily - including Far Cry 4 and Middle Earth: Shadow Of Mordor - but what's most interesting about the list is its sheer variety.
Big-budget games like Alien: Isolation dominates with six nominations - and deservedly so, in the case of its sound and game design - but it's joined by a range of less hyped titles, including Lumino City, Valiant Hearts and Monument Valley. It's particularly pleasing to see the beautifully-wrought platformer Never Alone get some deserved attention.
The BAFTA Games Awards ceremony will take place on the 11th March with Rufus Hound doing the introductions. While we wouldn't be surprised if some of the big...

The 42nd Annual Annie Awards were handed out on a busy Saturday night in the awards world and "How To Train Your Dragon 2" was the big winner. The DreamWorks Animation blockbuster (it's true) took home six Annies including Best Animated Feature and Directing (Dean DeBlois). While the entire Academy votes on the Best Animated Feature category, this endorsement from the animation community can't hurt in a very competitive year. Other big winners included "The Simpsons," Amazon's "Tumble Leaf" and Oscar frontrunner "Feast" for the Best Animated Short Subject honor. "The Boxtrolls'" Sir Ben Kingsley took home the award for Voice Acting in an Animated Feature Production and Phil Lord and Christoper Miller won for Writing in an Animated Feature for "The Lego Movie." A complete list of this year's honorees is as follows: Best Animated Feature "How to Train Your Dragon 2," DreamWorks Animation Directing in an Animated Feature Production Dean DeBlois,...

It’s the most wonderful time of the year (again), and as usual it’s getting to those last few weeks before the big day when creative ideas and planning make way for frantic grabs at whatever is left on the shelves after the Black Friday zombie hordes have cleared everything out.
But fear not: because the best of Christmas is watching movies, re-watching old TV specials and trying hard to forget that George Lucas ever decided that anyone wanted a Star Wars Christmas show, there’ll always be a helping hand round these parts for those who want it.
So if you’re buying for a difficult brother, a picky sister or just for the film, gaming or TV fan in your life, what follows is a compendium of the finest gift ideas for this year’s festivities, as usual there are massive opportunities to win most of what has been included…...

The good ol’ horror-loving folks at Scream! Factory recently gave us a double dose of hospital-themed terror in high definition with their Bad Dreams/Visiting Hours Blu-ray, which features the two cult classics as well as a handful of new bonus features. Par for the course, Scream’s presentation of the material is yet another home run, making it a must-own for fans or even the uninitiated.
First up on the hospital horror double feature is Bad Dreams, which follows a young woman named Cynthia (Jennifer Rubin) who awakens from a 13-year coma the sole survivor of a religious cult that burned together in a suicide pact orchestrated by an enigmatic leader named Harris (Richard Lynch). Harris believed true spiritual unity awaited his followers if they all died together, but of course with Cynthia surviving, that leaves her leader with some unfinished business. "Parks and Recreation" just concluded its sixth season in memorable fashion (here's my review), with the Pawnee/Eagleton unity concert, a trip to San Francisco, big cameos and then a very crazy idea at the very end of the finale which could give us a very different show in season 7. As usual when "Parks" wraps up a season, I emailed co-creator Mike Schur some questions about what went down, and why. It goes without saying that big big spoilers are coming, immediately. When, how and why did you come up with the idea for this three-year time jump? Mike Schur: We were breaking the final batch of episodes and had begun discussing the finale story. Some of it was sort of pre-destined, because we had the Unity Concert, which was going to put the merger storyline to rest, by showing that the town en masse would speak louder than the naysayers.

Parks and Recreation character Andy Dwyer may need to reconnect with his MouseRat bandmates, because another legendary Pawnee band might be reuniting. Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy will appear on the show, according to Entertainment Weekly, in a music-themed episode about a band that may or may not reunite set to air this spring.

A regionally famous rock band may reunite in Pawnee, and its singer will be portrayed by… Jeff Tweedy.
The Wilco frontman has filmed a guest spot in an upcoming episode of Parks and Recreation that has a theme of, shall we say, harmony. “He plays the former lead singer of a band called ‘Land Ho!’ — complete with exclamation point; Tweedy’s pitch — that was very popular in Indiana a while back,” Parks executive producer Michael Schur tells EW. “Leslie (Amy Poehler) and Andy (Chris Pratt) are trying to convince him to reunite for the big Unity Concert they are organizing...

Making the most of the mild winter weather, January Jones took her son Xander to a local park in Los Angeles for some active quality time yesterday (January 22).
The “Mad Men” starlet treated her youngster to a ride on a swing and plenty of romping around the grounds while fellow park-goers and shutterbugs looked on.
In career news, January will contribute her voice to a forthcoming four-part enlightenment documentary called “Unity.”
Slated to release on March 1st, the project also includes big names like Jennifer Aniston, Susan Sarandon and Joaquin Phoenix.
