I don't mind filler when it's good filler.

I didn't expect to like this episode. I usually loathe c3po but i found him quite comedic, especially when cmdr Wolf is on screen. Felt like a minor star trek episode, only shorter and faster. Also i didn't expect to see a rendition of the Allegory of the cave in the clone wars.

The Wizard of Odd

This follows a run of 5 previous episodes from the start of Season 4 which were basically lightweight fillers and this makes it 6 in a row. It is really not a problem to put some lighthearted episodes in amongst the superb more serious stuff but 6 in a row is a bit of a shame and became a drag for me making me impatient and grumpy in my reaction.

Also, sadly, I think this is one of the weakest of the 6 episodes that gave an underwhelming beginning to what turned out to be an otherwise great Season 4.

This is simply not Star Wars at all for most of the adventure. It is pure children's fantasy adventure copying aspects of The Wizard of Oz and Gulliver's Travels as well as pirate adventures.

I find it a bit strange that they feel the need to create fillers in the series by going off at such odd tangents and taking us out of the Star Wars world so carefully created in the majority of the franchise. Yes Star Wars is fantasy and this is just a bit of fun but I just think there is no need for such jarring comedy-fantasy diversions. It is not what I would do to entertain child viewers, I would just give them fun space battles and lightsaber and gun fights.

However, although this is irrelevant to the Star Wars universe and rather silly, it is quite charming in parts and has a few plus points.

The start and end are good as we see Grievous and his separatist forces clashing with Jedi and republic forces in a normal Clone Wars way. So those start and end scenes are a definite plus for me.

In between is a pure fantasy, comedic adventure that is pretty bizarre but certainly not awful. It is very much for young kids and is just a bit of fun. C3PO and R2D2 are charming characters so they carry the strange story and stop it being terrible.

The animation is nice and it is a harmless, well meaning, light hearted homage to adventures which influenced George Lucas.

This is absolutely not what I want from Clone Wars which is usually quite serious, high quality addition to the Star Wars saga. I wish Lucasfilm had made a separate show purely for kids - like the 80s cartoon Droids - and kept Clone Wars for the more serious storytelling but instead they mix occasional child oriented, comedy fillers in with the more dramatic Clone Wars stuff. I have to accept that as it is a family show and a bit of variety of story type is reasonable.

It is not great at all but not bad for kids and thank goodness the next episode marks a return to the great, serious Clone Wars storytelling I love.

My rating: 5/10.

Why does this episode exist...?

The fourth season of Clone Wars was absolutely fantastic... save for this anomaly. It is one of the weakest episodes of the series and definitely the strangest.

To sum it up: this episode is an homage to the Wizard of Oz and Gulliver's Travels. As if that wasn't strange enough, it focuses entirely on C-3PO and R2-D2, one of which does not talk, meaning the majority of this episode consists of 3PO either talking to R2 or translating what R2 is saying. It just feels out of place, especially this late into the game. I will give it credit that it's visually interesting, but aside from that, not much to this one.

Hidden Gem!

Warning: Spoilers
This was unexpectedly fun!

I had very much enjoyed season 3's droid episode, but didn't really warm-up to the previous one, so I had mild expectations about this one. And it was a delight! It felt super-creative and fun - it seemed as if the writers took a lot of liberty in writing the story, and turning it into a fun one, breaking it into these little segments (I gave a good laugh at the political jokes :)). In a series that gets progressively darker, it's good to have this change of pace.

Plus - it's a privilege to hear the voice of Anthony Daniels anytime :) This episode reminded me why C3PO and R2D2 are part of the soul of Star Wars :) A plus also on the way they made the action sequences - they're done in a way that feels as if they're secundary to what's happening to the droids, but the sequences look great and I very much enjoyed them!

I forgot I was even watching this episode. Would rather watch Carrie Fisher fly through space for 20 minutes than this story...

An absolute joy!

A strong episode with an alternative playing field! The writing is very creative. Shifting the focus on the adventures of C-3PO and R2-D2 always results in absolute gems.

Would be better in a different show
alexjacknife21 June 2022
It is a perfectly fine episode on its own but it doesn't belong... the idea of R2 and 3PO visiting different planets and discovering new civilizations was done in the past much worse and cheesier than this. 5/10.

Hilarious!

Granted, this episode doesn't fit with any major plotlines of the show. But, it's a slice-of-life for the two droids that started us on the adventure back in the 70s, and it fits perfectly with that!

There were a couple of parts of this story that made me unexpectedly burst out laughing. There was one part that had me a little teary. It was all clever twists on familiar stories, and it was well-done in that regard.

Not at minimum characters yet... It was good to hear Anthony Daniel's getting an entire episode to do what he does best: give life and personality to the equally annoying and endearing 3PO. And hearing R2 giggle was the bonus I didn't know I needed!
