This Won't End Well
rxckne15 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was the most tension filled episode of the season putting aside episode 3, and it's safe to say without Logan things are going to be spiraling to an unpleasant climax. This might be weird to say but Logan's presence was felt heavily in this episode despite him not even being present. You could feel the in-experience of the kids and how they were so far apart in this episode without having someone to make the calls that was in that position before. So without their father the kids had to take things into their own hands and they were juggling throughout the entire episode, something Logan would've never done to this degree.

And maybe I'm wrong and Logan would've called it similar to how it went but I can't help but agree with Shiv when she mentioned what her father might've done. Roman felt so much more aggressive in his approach and didn't seem as stable as Logan in high tension situations. So when Roman was pulling strings for Mencken it felt so ruthless and while you can make the argument that he has a killer mentality that Logan would've wanted, I can't help but feel that it doesn't feel deserved.

We saw the sprinkles of Rome's nature when he went on his power trip with Gerri and some of the other employees, but I never would've expected him to make this much of an impact in such a short time. Especially considering the place he and Kendall left off in the last episode. Roman's problem is actually very similar to Kendall's in a way. When both are fixated on something they're willing to pull any punches to make it go through, and that's what Roman was doing in this episode. And the momentum that's driving towards one character or the other is going all over the place. At the end of last episode I was thinking Ken is about to takeover, but now all of a sudden I don't know what to think regarding him. And now that his family is in jeopardy it's not looking good for him, which in return doesn't look good for the company since that might mean Roman could be in the drivers seat as he was in this instance.

I know they've all been through many hurdles already, but I think we officially saw the breaking point between Shiv and her brothers. Huge props to the direction of having Kendall outside of the room when making the revelation about Shiv and Mattson. It was so chilling and added to the tension of the scene. Then he slowly goes and talks to Greg, comes back in the room and reveals the information to Roman, giving Kendall the motivation to make the push for Mencken along with his brother. And phenomenal performance from Sarah Snook AGAIN. The way she was stuttering and seemed so flustered was perfect acting from her part.

But now that we're in the endgame, I think this episode laid the foundation for what's to come. It's hard to say that confidently knowing things can change so quickly in this show, but with the way Roman's handling the ship right now I think a crash is inevitable. And I think one of Shiv's last lines, "Things do happen, Rome" will be a clear indicator of what's to come. And that's consequences and a reality check for Roman who's been on a power trip.

The next episode will likely be the funeral for Logan Roy, and I am NOT prepared for what's to come. Considering Roman already wanted to do a eulogy and the state he's currently in, It's safe to say it won't be the most pleasant funeral. But what really goes pleasant with this family anyway?

My god the INTENSITY!!
and_mikkelsen15 May 2023
This episode was chaotic! It was a certain intense build-up towards that insane climax!! Its been a while since I have felt like this! My body feels uneased and I am sweating! My heart is beating faster and my breath is effected! I guess thats how anxiety feels like! What an absolute insane episode!

Very few episodes can manage to do intensity so well! To create a feeling of absolut uncertainty but you know something is gonna go down is just a matter of HOW! It reminded me of "Decloration of war" from Attack on Titan!

The episode is riddled with powerfull performances! Sarah Snook was incredible as Shiv who perfectly captures someone who finde everything crumbling around her! Amazing scene yet again with her and Tom!

Now there are just 2 episodes left of this masterpiece! Honestly one of the best seasons of show i have seen in a long time!

One of the best episodes of the series
UniqueParticle15 May 2023
For once in awhile I had incredible sleep and I can vibe so well with how masterfully this all is! Adam Godley is great, I always think of him as Elliott Schwartz from Breaking Bad that was magnificent. America Decides is focused on an election and a few silly shenanigans which is all hilarious and brilliant. This is like a more fun version of American politics, maybe it's my autism or just cause I crave the cast I'd totally vote for anyone involved in Succession. Shiv, Tom, Kendall and Roman Shine very well they all deserve an Emmy. Enthralling all around, I want my reviews to be more known by thousands I hope my thoughts are appreciated!

One of the best...

Warning: Spoilers
This is not only one of my favorite episodes of this show, but my favorite in television history.

To see the tables turn on so many ways in which we thought this season may end, in addition to the sheer tension of the plot of this episode, makes me feel such intense enjoyment. This is why I watch TV shows, this is why I love Succession. What an incredible script, coupled with phenomenal performances. In one episode there can be such great suspensful scenes, balanced out only so perfectly by such comedic scenes as that which involved "wasabi."

And to cap it all off, and only further prove the pure perfection of THIS show; a sort of fourth wall break from Roman, at the end: "we just made a night of good TV... nothing happens."

I am in utter awe.

It all comes together now
stanfcplandsoen16 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Masterful episode. Storylines, character arcs and personal traits all come together in a fast-pasted edge-of-your-seat rollercoaster. We see how Shiv thinks she's smarter then she is (just like Logan said), Ken is undecisive in pivotal moments and Roman is literally out of touch with reality. But also Connors running interferes with the story, Gregs position, the deal with Matsson, Shiv and Toms relationship, ATNs rightward lean, Logan gone, Kendall being an absent father and so on.

This is what we've been building up to, this is Logans legacy: three kids who've been learning how to scheme, lie, manipulate and in the end try to come out up top.

Terrifying and Hilarious
ossie8515 May 2023
Brilliabt episode proved to be a rollercoaster ride of emotions, with equal parts of terror and hilarity. The election, which has been puttering along in the background for a while, is finally happening. And ATN holds all the power. Roman on the dark side, Shiv on the light, Kendall in the middle, and Connor on his own side (elections are more interesting when you're in it!).

The writing of the episode is outstanding, with sharp and biting dialogue that captures the complex personalities of the characters. The tension and drama between the Roy family members make for compelling television, with unexpected twists and turns that keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

The ensemble acting performance in "America Decides" is also phenomenal, with each actor delivering nuanced and layered portrayals of their respective characters.

However, the real standout of the episode is the hilarious moments sprinkled throughout the heavy drama. Greg and Tom scenes are brilliant as always.

"America Decides" continues the streak of brilliant episodes in Succession's last season. The writing is sharp, the acting is superb, and the mix of drama and humor is just right. It's a testament to the show's ability to make its audience simultaneously root for and despise its characters.

America Decided
sman0115 May 2023
The Roy family's toxic dynamics and unending hunger for power are brilliantly portrayed. The narrative mirrors the chaos and unpredictability of real-world elections, offering sharp political commentary alongside its character drama.

Shiv, Kendall, and Roman, the Roy siblings, drive the narrative with their complex character arcs. Shiv's hypocrisy is as stark as ever, adding layers to her already complex character. Kendall's indecisiveness is frustrating yet relatable, highlighting his continuing struggle with his place in the family and the business. Roman's unabashed ambition for power is a thrilling watch and provides some of the episode's most tension-filled moments.

The episode is imbued with the dark humor that has become a hallmark of Succession, offering moments of levity amidst the chaos. The writing is sharp and the performances are exceptional, especially Jeremy Strong's nuanced portrayal of Kendall.

Overall, 'America Decides' exemplifies what makes Succession a standout series - compelling characters, smart writing, and a willingness to delve into the messy intersection of family and power. This episode is a must-watch, delivering an engaging narrative that both entertains and provokes thought.

Pandemonium!!
joshbernardy1315 May 2023
Wild. Crazy. Disjointed. Cruel. Gutless. Embittered. Embattled. Uncertain. Tumultuous..

These are just a few of the words that come to mind after watching yet another masterful episode of succession!

As we're nearing the end of this series, one thing has become clear: that that we're really no where closer to knowing who the 'real successor' is than we were at the very beginning. Just when you think you might have it figured out, another domino falls and thwarts our expectations!

It's just insane how we keep getting treated to one spectacular episode after another. This season has been nothing short of perfection!

With two more episodes to go, I'm here for every last second!

Can this season get any better? Warning: Spoilers
No words for this episode.

Shiv telling Tom about her pregnancy is a brilliant scene and Tom asking her about the truth in that statement really shows how broken their relationship is now.

Unbelievable acting from both Sarah Snook and Matthew Macfayden.

Roman is undoubtedly going insane and Kieran needs to pick up that emmy.

Greg is as always climbing his way up that ladder and Shiv is going to do something really hasty and hazardous to foil the Ken and Rome and really looking forward to Matsson and Shiv's alliance strengthening.

Next episode's going to be an emotional and chaotic one ///

Politics aside, this was a great episode
85122211 January 2024
Greetings from Lithuania.

Politics aside, i enjoyed this episode for superb writing, acting and directing. I'm not really into whole politics and election of USA president thing because i live at other side of the world, but it was very interesting to see this process going from a side one usually does not see. I would like if i say that totally understood whole aspects of this process, yet this episode was superb in its depiction of event and i liked the acting especially here. All of the main actors were superb.

Overall, with only two episodes left i have no clue were this is going, but i have no doubt they will stick the landing.

Political Thriller
tristan_1915 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
America is about to elect the new President. ATN is on high alert, and the Roy siblings are overseeing the narrative.

This episode was superbly presented and interwoven together. Roman has an affiliation with Mencken. An incident occurs, leading into a loss of ballots, and decisions have to be made quickly.

Shiv and Greg have a meeting and some threats are thrown. That doesn't sit with Greg, and we get my favorite scene of the episode, with Kendall learning her sister has been on Matsson's side all this time.

Once again, it was great. Now, I really don't know what is going to happen or how the showrunners are going to book end every loose end before the end. I have faith in the writers, but maybe it is the point. There will always be some fighting and conflicts happening, and there will never be a real clear cut ending to the skirmishes. And so, the CEO role will always be hanging in the balance.

Fox News' Coverage From the Left's Perspective
qbrtmgy2 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode viewed as if they took the 2020 election, threw all the malfeasance into a blender and regurgitated it to fit the Democrat's narrative. The series has been fantastic, albeit, the OBVIOUS political leanings required be Hollywood. This episode was just... cheap. The writers needed to make some small-p***$ exec happy before the show's finale. Shiv telling Tom she was pregnant at a very illogical moment didn't ring true to her cold and measured character. Additionally , she has never interacted with Greg, but suddenly she has the need to? It all just felt like they were trying to wrap up story lines.

A bit disappointing
Criticalstaff15 May 2023
For all it's attention to detail, Succession has never really fleshed out it's own universe. It only ever offered a mirror of our own. A certain amount of distortion was always granted. The Roys are the Murdochs, but not quite. ATN is Fox News, but not quite. As such the show doesn't really show us reality as it is shows a version of it. Not quite the truth but the perception of the truth . It's not Fox News, but it is the image we have of Fox News. And that is where the show loses some of its potency. There is the text, context and there is the subtext and metatext. However, here I found the context lacking; you can only go so far purely with text. Until now, Succession would always push reality to the background, so it could focus drama on family. Yes, they were the Murdochs, a wealthy family controlling a right-wing media empire, but that was just window dressing for depicting Logan as a tyrant, Kendall as insecure and so on...

It's election night in the world of Succession, and the race is between a left-wing Latino democrat and a republican populist everybody says is a fascist. ATN, is using its might as the premier news channel to influence the perception of the US election to change its outcome. The motivations for it are very clear and straightforward, in short every character does so because they think it will strengthen their own personal private position in the family chess-game. That is all fine for a fictional drama. The problem is that it leans on what happened in reality. Yet it also mischaracterises it. Suddenly the family drama at the core does not feel pregnant. Reality was more absurd and chaotic and more consequential that what Succession offers. It felt more significant.

We are presented with a very clean, very elegant trade-off: the Roys end up supporting the in-universe alt-right candidate because it helps them renege on a business deal. But that feels off with respect to reality. The show presents it driven by opportunity, in reality it seems it might have been driven by fear. I doubt there was a debate of opposing views at Fox's HQ before deciding to support either candidate. I would say that's not how anything works or has worked. Succession presents it like a debate of ideas, or even as a clash of opposing interests. And there is something verisimilar in the billionaires giving in to fascism thinking they will be able to control it or be insulated from the consequences (and slowly discovering they won't). But again, that is not quite in line with what happened in 2020, where more than anything it was the tail wagging the dog.

The problem is that the in-universe has never been fleshed out, yet the show attempts to build on that to deliver some dramatic arc. When you realise the framing is fake, it makes the drama seem artificial too.

Frantic
Hitchcoc16 May 2023
My reviews tend to be a bit alike. We take any setting in the big time world that is Succession, and we throw in some of the most jaded, complex figures in cinema history. Then we let them work their magic. This is election night. It is going to be very close, but it appears that their liberal candidate is going to lose the election. What they do is try to figure out how to take advantage of things no matter what the outcome. They are still trying to swing the mega-deal. Most of the episode revolves around whether to call the state of Wisconsin and scoop the other networks, but there are numerous ballots out there and Shiv is hanging on. As is usually the case she is looking out for number one, but doesn't have total power. There we have it: Kendall all depressed, Roman a nut case, Shiv taking everything personally, hyped up and furious, and Tom Running around like decapitated poultry. It is magnificent and captivating every second. The writing is fabulous with the quick interactions among the characters. Oh, this is going to end in a couple weeks. What will we do?

TV gold

Warning: Spoilers
I rank this as one of the best episodes of TV I have ever watched, comparable to episode 10 of season 5 in GOT when John Snow is betrayed. This time the siblings all take a swing at each other and ultimately end democracy in the process. It's amazing how you literally can't support any one of the kids because at their core they're selfish and power hungry and will do anything to advance their own individual interests. This episode had me move from my couch to sitting on my table because it was that captivating. Brilliant show which I think should have had a season 5 because this episode has opened a whole new dimension to the show.

America "tries to" Decide
Adam-0926515 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Another great episode. From start to finish it's been one chaotic defusal with different coloured wires and each pull creates tension for a certain party.

Tom and the touch screen problem exploding fear throughout ATM creating agany for Kendall. Roman having his own game with Mencken, leaving the podium open, Ken wanting to be the one leader is no longer a straight arrow. Shiv having her own problems but she's been digging a deeper hole ever since she decided to team up with Lukas. Lukas doesn't care for her, only himself and using Shiv as a way into the Roy party like a spy is evidently killing her out of the family. Shiv threatening Gregg as a power play backfired straight away, it's more than just being part of a rich family. Shiv just doesn't know how to play people.

Two episodes left, Roman has a chance to go higher than Kendall, Shiv is most likely completely against her family now and Kendall is like a worried puppy. Directions are turning fast.

Great Episode!
ajvzkvkgs15 May 2023
The episode provides a riveting and powerful depiction of America's political scene. It follows the Roy family as they negotiate the presidential race, with each member battling for their own interests and ambitions.

The writing is snappy and amusing, with great dialogue that keeps you interested throughout. The tension builds slowly throughout the show, culminating in a surprising conclusion that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

What makes this episode so interesting is its relevance to current events. It addresses issues such as media manipulation, political corruption, and family interactions in a way that feels all too true. It's a timely warning of how power can corrupt even the most well-meaning people.

Overall, "America Decides" is a great episode that highlights the show's skills in writing, acting, and storyline. It's a must-see for aficionados of political dramas and anyone interested in delving into the darker side of power relations.

'Succession' existed for this moment
TaylorYee9412 September 2023
Yes, high-level black comedy, corporate power move, schemes and dynamics, & chemistry between the whole cast. There are many things to praise about this show. However, this episode is the essence of what the director is trying to tell. Paradoxical title 'America decides' is the cherry on top. It shows clearly and vividly that voting, the very act of democracy and the symbol of democracy, can be controlled by the media and a few. I especially love the sequence where the camera shows the faces of actors after the announcer called it for Mencken. Their faces.. All of them, even Roman, have doubtful, guilty, disappointing, and empty expressions which are the same expressions that the audience has. That pause and the silence at that moment is super powerful, followed by intense arguments and stress of hectic decision making a moment before. Work of art.

Warning: Spoilers
Like many people have said - one of the best if not the best episodes of the entire series. Absolutely LOVED it. What a rollicking ride!! Viscerally impactful!!! We were sweating, laughing (OUT LOUD) , horrified, amused. It was not just a beautiful Succession episode it was the best thing I can recall ever seeing on TV. The scenes with Tom and Greg were comedy gold. The pace, the chaos! The horror of how incredibly flimsy our world is! How flimsy morals are, how flimsy public opinion is. The horror of the shallowness of human being in particular those who 'lead' who we elect to lead and those who govern through their wealth. UNBELIEVABLY EXCELLENT TV.

Uhmmm, I don't think that's how "calling a state" works
etmanahmed16 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
One of the things I love about this show is that despite having big elements of comedy and goofiness, it still manages to seem realistic. Everything that happens in this show could happen in real life. Well, not for this episode. While maintaining the entertainment and excitement level I am by now used to and expect from this show, as well as the excellent acting, directing and camera work, the reality feel was underdelivered for me. Calling a state and therefore the election is taken very seriously by mainstream media for one obvious reason: You don't want to get this wrong. First there are other competing networks who are also reporting on this, and second, the states announce who win, eventually, and you don't want your projection calling to be wrong. No matter how biased the news outlet is, and no matter how extreme its analytical content gets, when it comes to this, they all try to get it right, even if it's the other side who's winning. Yes, sometimes a wrong call is made, but it's usually due to statistical ambiguity, and is later corrected when proven wrong.

A CEO giving orders to the newsroom to call a state and the election seems to me very unrealistic for a network with the size of ATN, which is supposed to be equal to FOX and CNN. These networks do their best to manipulate their viewers in any way the can, but when it comes to calling states, they stick to the actual numbers and statistics. In the last part of this episode, it seems as if no other network was also projecting the results, or as if no actual results will come out by the state itself later. It was written as if ATN called it, then Mencken is POTUS, done! That's not how it works.

Writers focus more on propaganda than writing
AmarHamadi15 May 2023
The writers made an entire episode demonizing the right wing voters using real world examples and creating nothing but straw man arguments. The whole thing is very annoying to watch knowing that it is entirely made to make one side look bad while the other side look good. They have been doing it for many episodes now but this is just way too far and on the nose. Usually it is more in the background or just one scene but the entire episode is dedicated to making one side seem like pure evil and the other side being democracy. It is very one sided and a college hack writer must have done it. Please do better in the future.

Republicans bad democrats gooood eye roll eye roll eye roll
eaglesdonovanmcnabb13 June 2023
We get it Hollywood you're democrat. Can you imagine the outrage if they made this the other way around and painted the liberals to be corrupt? Would never happen, too virtuous. Of course it's very lifelike that only one side is and all their supporters are evil.

Love the show and this episode had some good character moments between the siblings so not a total one in my book, kind of cool to see the inside operation of a news room just would have preferred it not to have shoved their political agenda down our throats.

No idea how this will end. Or if the point of the show is to show us the kids run this into the ground without Logan every time you start to root for someone they take a step back. Still excited to see how it finishes.

One of the series' worst episodes
kilgoretrout-2382716 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
While I agree with all the messages about democracy and media corruption, I wasn't happy with this episode.

First, I don't feel the emotional stakes were properly communicated. While the climax rested on the relationship between the siblings and Shiv's issues with Tom, this wasn't effectively foreshadowed. Also the Darwin guy needed to be seen as more incorruptible and vital to integrity so that his eventual diminishment really hits.

The episode had issues with timing, with line readings, and with writing. I also felt that the comedy was taken for granted, such as the Wassabi scene. It didn't feel earned and the Le Croix thing was ridiculous. Like, Greg is not that stupid. It should have compounded from something inherent in the situation, like perhaps it could've been mentioned in the beginning that they didn't get any water bottles delivered like normal, and then someone says that Le Croix is good for you and Greg takes that to heart.

Worst episode of any series.
Top_Dawg_Critic7 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Oh surprise surprise, yet another episode where the big reveal is that one of the siblings backstabbed the other siblings. But let's also throw in some lame and boring politics to fill in yet another long, dragged out and boring hour of nonsense and lazy writing, with dialogue that would barely be acceptable in the janitors room, let alone the upper level of corporate empire dynamics. This show should've just ended with Logan's death, and the reading of an actual will to his estate and named successor(s) to finally answer the four-season long awaited question, but HBO in typical fashion just keeps milking a dry cow in what I feel is the most overrated show in TV/streaming history. Thankfully the punishing pain will be over for good in a few more episodes.

Succession Is Going Out With A Whimper, Not A Bang
Art_Of_Film_3P15 May 2023
As we approach the final two episodes of the critically acclaimed HBO powerhouse, Succession appears to be falling off a cliff in slow motion. The much anticipated, long-hyped 'election night' episode where all the politics that's bubbled beneath the surface of the show since the beginning culminates in a battle of ideology vs family dynamics, with the societal stakes never being higher.

Unfortunately, this ended up being another overwritten yet undercooked episode of this show, and politically biased to the point of total delusion and insincerity. The characters all feel underdeveloped somehow, with the audience never once being able to properly understand the actual politics going on, only provided second-hand throw away snarky comments as a disguise for actual diplomatic intrigue.

Some great performances as always, but the writing and direction this show has gone in is a total mess, and will horribly date in a few years (if not already, this feels three years too late). Between the total fizzle of the entire Connor storyline, the grating Shiv/Tom relationship, and the obnoxious late-stage Kendall and his non-biological child plot-line (which has never been explained in four seasons), it'll be for the best when Succession can finally be put to rest.
