Worst Episode Ever (?)
ericstevenson20 September 2023
Well, this wasn't good at all. I agree with most people that I just basically gasped at what was going on. It's basically three short stories, but this time there was a frame up. It was Leela falling in love with the prince of space (movie reference?) and then these random stories appearing with the characters as toys. I mean, it was just too random a way to tell stories. Leela just seems to randomly dump Fry, but it does say she was under a science spell.

That's pretty lame. I was wondering how long these stories would go on. It just seemed like one pointless story after another. I guess the car one was the best. I guess reincarnation was the theme? What did that have to do with the frame up? *1/2.

Absolutely pointless and unengaging.
larsstian18 September 2023
The first episode of this new season of Futurama seemed promising to me, although it seemed to have promised more than it could deliver. I think many of the new episodes have been somewhat dull, but I nonetheless had no problems watching them until the end. There was still the occasional joke that made me smile, and the heart of the show seemed still to be there.

This episode, however, feels like a complete waste of time, it's merely trite filler without any merit whatsoever. The backdrop-plot is Fry, Leela, and Bender deliver a package to some space king, where Leela falls in love with the prince there, although she's engaged to Fry - and in the last second of the episode, it's said she was under a "science spell", without any further explanation. The real episode is about the three shorts about the crew being different types of toys. There is no link between the backdrop and the shorts, so what on earth was the point? It wasn't funny, it wasn't interesting, it added nothing.

Unto the shorts themselves. They were mainly just dull. The jokes didn't land for me, and the set-up just didn't pay off. They were mostly fairly predictable. I always thought that the shorts were more prone to becoming unengaging filler, but episodes like "Tales of interest" were really good, whereas this is bad even for an episode made up of shorts.

I don't have much more to say than that this episode was hard to finish. It felt way too long, and just didn't lead anywhere. In the end, it felt completely pointless. As already mentioned, I thought the first episode of the new season was promising, but I honestly thought the quality hasn't been as high as it should have been, although I have not felt the need to write a review about it until now. This episode was so trite and boring that I'm honestly surprised they made it and nobody had any objection to this episode, since it really hit a low point for Futurama in my view. Not because it's offensive or shocking, but because it's the most boring episode of Futurama to date.

All over the place
duoversity18 September 2023
So far the new season has been rather average with a few hits and misses here and there, but this episode specifically was just bad.

It's not out of the norm for Futurama to create a mix of stories and pull them into one episode, e.g. Anthology of Interest, but in this episode specifically they tried to awkwardly gel concepts together in a strange multiverse approach, it almost felt like they were trying to do what Rick and Morty do, but in the worst possible way.

Overall this episode is structurally disappointing, but it also lacks any real laughs to at-least make it entertaining. It's a Farcry from the excellence of the Anthology of Interest episodes of this he past.

I really hope the next episode course corrects.

What was that?!
Balnyetnikoff20 September 2023
I am sorry- I am a long time fan of futurama, but this was one was just terrible.

Not funny at all. Each "toy" vignette was annoying, irrelevant, predictable, and generally stupid. I found myself looking forward to the ending and not caring at all about the main plot.

Although the characters have been fairly one dimensional for a while now, they are now just caricatures of themselves whittled down to just a few dumb catchphrases.

It was a struggle to finish and in general makes me very worried for the future of the show. If they are this out of ideas, why bother to bring it back in the first place?

Written by A.I.???
haleighsdean20 September 2023
Honestly, if this episode ended with text saying "Written by A. I", I'd give it way more stars. That would have been a clever nod to supporting the current writers' strike and a great illustration on why good writers are so essential.

In fact, they could have made a whole funny wrap-up segment of an A. I/robot printing the final page of the episode's script and calling it their masterpiece. Would have fit really well with the universe, their show's comedic style, and the current climate around A. I. in media.

But this episode didn't do any of that. So I can only assume humans wrote it. Which easily makes it the worst episode in the entire series, hands down.

The worst.
patrick-41320 September 2023
I don't have to go back to check... This is the worst episode of the entire series, absolutely, without a doubt.

IMDB is making me write a full 600 characters about this garbage, but it doesn't even deserve 10.

I'm truly perplexed as to how the creators of such a formerly great show could spew out such awful, rank, garbage. Have they grown to hate their loyal audience? The "A" plot - maybe? - was stupid, sexist, predictable, and absolutely not funny. The many "B" plots were all entirely bereft of humor, cleverness, or any charm whatsoever.

This could not have been a greater misfire. I'm sad.

I see what they were going for...
topherburton-2902119 September 2023
They missed, Big Time!

I loved both the Saturday Morning Fun Pit and Reincarnation episodes, as well as the Anthology of Interest I and Anthology of Interest II, but this was bad!.

The obscure non-canonical episodes have been some of my favorites, but this one didn't hold a candle.

Even if they scrapped the pointless King of Space sub-plot, it would have blown, but that plotline, as well as the so-called twist and shoddy ending were so beneath even the worst Futurama episode. I think they were going for an Amazon Women on the Moon non-sequitur style of cohesion, but it was bad.

Even the toy subplots were poorly written. The car one had a couple of laughs, but the robot and rubber duck/weeble wobble bits felt like they were written by a first-year intern.

This season has been hit or miss, which I can deal with. It's my fourth time on this ride, but this is my least favorite Futurama episode, ever and I've never had one before today.

A sneering parody of itself
nfwtyt18 September 2023
This is one of the most bafflingly terrible episodes of television I've ever seen. I genuinely have serious trouble even beginning to understand the motivations behind its creation; neither A-plot not B-plot makes particular sense nor relates in any significant way to the other, instead relying on a complete failure of a wacky anthology to tack pathos onto the A-plot much like a negligent landlord slaps fresh paint over black mould.

I have never written an IMDB review. I never felt the need to, before now. But this season has been astoundingly bad and this episode is arguably the lowest point of the entire show. Given how poorly some early episodes have aged, that is quite the achievement.

And the thing is... I love Futurama. What happened? How did the creatives in charge of this season fail so comprehensively to recapture what made the show special in the first place? It's a shame to see. There desperately needs to be some sort of major staffing shakeup for future seasons.

Not great, certainly not that bad
Ar_Pharazon_the_golden23 September 2023
Futurama has done these anthology stories before, better. But the episode is not nearly as bad as some rabid reviews claim. It's...ok, like most of the season. The framing story is lazy and unnecessary despite a couple of decent jokes. From the mini stories, the last one is the best, though the problem with all three is not the lack of good lines as the plot being sort of meh.

In general the issue with this season is in my opinion that after so long an absence, the show thought it had to do a reintroduction of sorts - so we get episodes centering on this and that character as if it's season 1, except we are already acquainted with them so it seems unnecessary.

Still, both the season and this arguably mediocre episode deserve better than this constant whining.

Disrespectful to the source, absolute garbage
samadams-1824921 September 2023
This is by far the worst episode of Futurama so far. It was incoherent, disjointed, failed to provide a reference for the framing device (the delivery to the King of Space) and had all of the characters behaving completely out of character just for the sake of a lame story. The worst part was the handwave at the end with the professor saying it was a "science spell" in the last seconds.

They are now treating their fans like idiots, who have become used to tightly-written scripts with well thought-out plots and clever dialogue, but Hulu got their mitts on it and gave us this.

Like most here, I've been a day-one fan and watched most episodes episodes multiple times because they are so well crafted, they deserve re-watching. This season? Absolute garbage. Lazily written with no regard to the fans who kept up with it for two decades.

This is a shameful way for this series to go out on. This is Matt Groening's property and still has considerable clout to make sure that this could have been the best season to go out on, but he decided to say f--- it all, I got paid, and I can't be bothered any longer.

Hilariously dark
vlydianoctum22 September 2023
Was this episode written by someone who was very high? Probably. Nonetheless the entire episode, as disjointed as it was, was connected in theme. It seemed almost like Futurama's answer to the Treehouse of Horror episodes, and I found it thoroughly enjoyable, with some of the funniest jokes of the season so far. I do wonder if the entire episode was some sort of in-joke - perhaps Hulu demanded some sort of product placement? The tone of the show has somewhat shifted from previous seasons, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, as long as it finds its own footing. I have felt that most of the episodes of this reboot have been a bit lackluster, and it's good to see the writers starting to get their groove back. It gives me great hopes for future episodes.

What were they thinking
yordaa_18 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode caught my attention for all the wrong reasons. There were so many out of place moments, non-sensical gibberish and a poor execution of "story telling" (if you can even call it that) that just made my blood boil.

I mean, in a mere second Leela falls in love with her "one true love" a space prince whom we know nothing about and thus abandons Fry like a discarded crusty old tissue. What makes even less sense is that Fry is made to look like a chump, immediately succumbing to this bizarre reality. It's just so out of character for him. Towards the end of the episode, things go back to the way they were with Leela and the professor explaining Leela was controlled by a "space spell"... I mean come on, really.

Secondly, what even were those mini stories? Are the writers trying to appease viewers that watch Cocomelon? I honestly could not tell you... I literally could not follow the pacing, nor understand what was going on at any one time.

Writers, please re-visit your older work to remind yourselves what made Futurama so great. I miss the originality, creativity and love you once had for the show.

A very disjointed anthology episode
ddempseylewis18 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The prince and the product is an episode that just does everything wrong with the anthology format. Sure there are other episodes on this show anthology themed but this is by far the worst of them and even worse than rage against the vaccine. First off Leela suddenly cheats on Fry with a prince and the initial plot segments just have fry contend for Leela's heart. The rest of the episode are just toy commercials that have absolutely nothing to do with the main segment and they are all extremely mean spirited. The car segment is the worst of these segments as it displays Family Guy and American Dad of cruelty and tries to paint Zoidberg as a Roger Smith clone, which just does not work and is totally out of character for Zoidberg. He is not a sociopath. Even the main segment had an ending that just does not make any sense with Bender suddenly becoming the crew's ship and crashing into earth for no reason. There is basically no plot in this episode because of these segments are just duking each other out for screentime and all of them are unrelated to each other and disjointed. Futurama really needs to change and stop trying to be relevant on current topics and to stop being so mean spirited.

Why?
c39424f18 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Didn't think they could get worse than the COVID episode but wow, this is just terrible.

I don't even really understand what they were going for, it feels like part of the script is missing which explains why we keep seeing 'adverts' for toys (they're not even adverts, they're like Saturday morning cartoon pastiches) interrupting a plot that has nothing to do with toys.

Referencing stuff like hot wheels in 2023 feels so weird. I kept expecting the whole Leela-falling-in-love-with-a-Prince thing to be a dream but no, she was cursed or something. Fundamentally bad and lazy storytelling, I just don't know what they were thinking.

The worst crime is how seriously unfunny this one is. No joke lands, on the occasion they actually try and tell one, it feels very much like a generic modern adult cartoon in that sense.

I don't know why you'd waste an episode of a Futurama revival on total, total dross like this. The only reason it's not a 1/10 is that the ducks were kind of cute.

Why the hell
URHAMSTERMOTHER18 September 2023
So glad we ended Disenchanted abruptly so we could watch high quality episodes of futurama. Are we testing to see how much Hulu will spend on trash and just make unsupervised terrible quality. Why even revive the show if this is what you're going to make? You're telling me THIS is what you waited 10 years to make, this was the episode that you've been clinging to since the end of the series? What am I even watching? Are all the toy characters just collectable in an app game what is even happening? I imagine the entire studio were all high on expired shrooms or they made an AI write the script. Maybe they ran out of ideas and just picked this one out of the garbage.

Why?
maelstrom-1513222 September 2023
I've been counting the seconds for this episode to end. How could I describe this episode? Empty. Inconsistent. A waste of time and effort. It added absolutely nothing to Futurama's universe.

Hopefully it will wrap everything at the end? Nope. No conclusion. No metaphor. My suspension of disbelief has been... suspended. I hope you're glad you made me create an account to write a review about this. I could taste the desperation the actors had when making it. I hope they got it better on the next episode.

Ari John Kaplan, you added Futurama to your Curriculum Vitae. Congratulations on that, buddy. You made it.

Another terrible episode
telenikros19 September 2023
Another parody episode of small clips which isn't catching at all, they did a similar episode to this is the previous series which has a scooby doo based episode which was just as bad as this one.

The have such a high fan base from 23 years ago so they are engaging fans that are in their late 30's early 40's with a good character base and the make such terrible episodes like this. That has no link to the other episodes.

The car parody has wasn't fun, the rubber ducks wasn't fun, they make these episodes to get a new very young audience but it is driving the audience that they already have away.

Souless
joshuacarlbrucks20 September 2023
I get that this is a non canon anthology, but these types of episodes should be FUN. Every character is a husk, and the stories are about as interesting as a log. I like the commentary on losing things, but there are already futurama episodes that tell this but much better. There are also reused jokes, which are not nearly as funny. Another thing I noticed in all the recent episodes is the declining voice acting quality, character writing, and editing. It was tolerable in some of the better episodes like the Canceled episode and the Swamp bog episode, but this one and the covid one don't have any of the humor, timelessness, or love that can make such things less noticeable.

Wonderful Parody of Consumerism Muscling Out Art
PorkyLePew20 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As with any artistic discourse, and any other review you see anywhere, this is just my opinion. If you feel differently that is a perfectly valid thing, and that's one of the many things that makes art so wonderful.

At first, I found myself thinking that the episode was disjointed and super rushed and outside the reality the rest of the show establishes.

But when the second advertisement (the cars) started, I was finally struck with the point: They are intentionally interrupting the "main plot" with advertisements taking the king's share of the allotted time for the episode, and interrupting in key moments that make for a sudden, deeply unsatisfied feeling, to satirize commercial breaks and the emphasis media companies put on commerce over art. And hilariously, the ad segments themselves even are interrupted by Hulu'a adds! Every time!

The return to form here of incisively mocking the distributors is so wonderful. And Futurama really uses the mundane functions of Hulu to further enhance this piece. Easily, this is my favorite episode of the season, and is probably in my top 20 overall!

And the fact that after the ads, they didn't even have time to resolve the "main plot" to make any sense was hilarious. "A science spell!" "Ohhhhh." Fin

Great job to the cast and crew, and thank you for putting in the effort to make something special, even after all these years on this show!

A Tragic Season Unexpected
ahmetesen20 September 2023
I have watched all episodes of Futurama 4-5 times but seriously this season is disgrace to all 10 seasons. Please don't make this series worse i was so excited when i heard Futurama will air again but i wasn't expecting this nonse. This series is not just a way to gain money to platform like Hulu stop this nonsence make a few good episodes and end it. Futurama was in top series of most of people and with this cheap writings you are dishonoring the legacy that all Futurama fans have in their hearts. I hope they can fix this because i love Futurama and it will always have a great memory in my mind dont make a shty finale .

Worst episode of the season, and a contender for worst episode of the show.
bhartman3626 September 2023
The most positive thing I can say about this episode is that the voice acting was done well, which is just to say it was a Futurama episode.

It's nonsensical, doesn't respect Fry and Leela's relationship, and the anthology segments are all unrelated to the framing device.

I really don't understand what happened with this episode. There's just no excuse for putting out garbage like this. None of the jokes really land, and the ending is incredibly lazy. I would make one suggestion to the writers: Whatever drugs you were taking when you wrote this, stop taking them.

Skip over this one. The season finale is much better.

Who actually likes these
guerrio19 September 2023
You won't be missing out if you skip this episode.

The original seasons didn't really have these types of episodes, save anthology of interest 1 and 2. But those episodes were bangers so I was fine with them. The revival seasons brought in Naturama which was also a banger episode, although others like the Holiday Special and Reincarnation were absolutely the worst episodes. This episode can join those other two, now making (objectively) the worst trio of episodes of this series.

This new season had a couple decent episodes that I will definitely rewatch, but most were also amongst the worst this show has to offer. The other revival seasons weren't overly great either but they at least had some incredible episodes amongst them to make them worthwhile. So far this revival hasn't offered anything close to the Late Philip J Fry.

Unexplainably Bad
eblrobinson22 September 2023
One of the cleverest shows on tv delivers its stupidest episode. My genuine reaction to watching this was "what the hell is going on".

It's as though it were written as just one stream of consciousness with no thought beyond "whatever happens next is good enough".

They may well have been trying to parody an older format of television broadcast wherein an interstitial program is essentially the bait for some toy commercials- but this is a stretch if correct.

There is very little humour and even less cohesion.

Overall its an aggravating disappointment in a season so long anticipated. Truly deserving of the ire it's received.

the prince and the mediocrity
talllwoood1313 October 2023
You have to TRY to make an episode this bad and forgetful. This reminds me of when Tommy Wiseau got famous for directing and starring in the movie "The Room" from 2003. The second he was in on the joke and people just expected goofiness it lost any charm or humor in the later work he did.

Who is green lighting these scripts? Maybe 2 of these 9 I've seen so far are watchable. The bad episodes in a good season are far superior if that makes any sense and this is far from the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia. The animation is done perfectly fine. I keep bringing that up. However.. the writing is so bad like a few others have mentioned I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't AI who came up with these stupid ideas to put this episodes together. I maybe chuckled once. It just seems like a culmination of badly put together kids show pilots or rehashed ideas that weren't good enough for The Simpsons. Similar to the one they did the episode "Saturday Morning Fun Pit" from season 10 episode 6. That obnoxiously stupid episode is a million times better than this trash. I'm seriously giving up on this show. Please FOX or Comedy Central get the rights back to this show!

Aimless, lazy and tragically boring
thebenjaminnunn18 September 2023
Having rewatched every episode of Futurama multiple times I'm disappointed to admit they've finally made one worth skipping.

A rare Futurama episode that just doesn't know what it wants to be. A combination of a classic story and a few shorts themed around different toys. Some of it is fairly imaginative and could have been the basis of some amusing stories but combined the episode felt aimless, underdeveloped and, worst of all, boring.

The final scene of the episode acknowledges that the whole thing has been pointless with the kind of gag that Futurama has successfully pulled off in the past. Unfortunately in this case the writing just isn't there. Potentially the only truly bad episode of the entire series.
