Underdog vs mean corporations
Jackbv12327 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
When I realized what plot device they were using, I almost gave up on this film. Poor Christine is about to lose her dance studio, that's been in her family, to the big corporation that is tearing everything down, and the guy she meets, Jack, is head of the project, but she doesn't know it. Add to that Jack's existing girlfriend is the powerful boss' daughter. And in the beginning, Jack is a real money-grubbing, dishonest jerk.

The other well-used plot device is that of showing Jack doesn't belong in this world of snobs. But before he can learn that, he needs will learn how to dance so he can show his society-bred girlfriend that he can. So he randomly goes to Christine's studio.

You can probably figure out how most of this is going to work out, but there is one fun thing thrown in - his mother shows up. She is funny. At first you think she is the stereotype meddler, but she turns out to be much better than that.

While most of the dance instruction takes place without music, there are a couple of nice displays of the waltz. Not overly glitzy, but romantic. The only downside is that the same waltz music runs on the soundtrack constantly, even sometimes when no one is dancing.

The acting is good enough. I thought that Jack's change from jerk to nice-guy was too quick and unbelievable. Christine trusts this guy who literally walked in off the street and pours out her troubles to him almost immediately.

***SPOILERS*** Kudos to this movie for an ending that doesn't solve every problem. There's a little twist to save the studio, but many will see it coming.

Addendum after watching again 3 years after first viewing. I remembered one key plot development, but didn't remember the entire movie that well. Between the first time and this time, I watched 4 seasons of Saving Hope in about 2 months. Michelle Norton is quite memorable as something of a hard a** in that series and Christine has many subtle similarities as you might expect being the same actor. In my second viewing, I never saw Christine as quite as soft as I'm sure I did the first time. Even with that, and Jack starting out as such a money grubbing jerk, Norton and McCarthy do develop chemistry.

More Suitable For Valentines Day
Christmas-Reviewer1 January 2017
BEWARE OF BOGUS REVIEWS. SOME REVIEWERS HAVE ONLY ONE REVIEW. WHEN ITS A POSITIVE REVIEW THAT TELLS ME THEY WERE INVOLVED WITH THE PRODUCTION. IF ITS A NEGATIVE REVIEW THEN THEY MIGHT HAVE A GRUDGE AGAINST THAT PRODUCTION. NOW I HAVE REVIEWED OVER 200 Christmas MOVIES. I HAVE NO AGENDA. I AM FARE ABOUT THESE FILMS.

This film is a winner. This gets played during Christmas time on the Hallmark Channel because it takes place during Christmas however the setting might worked better if it took place on Valentines Day. Regardless the film is a HUGEbJOY. Its very romantic with a nice pace. On top of that it has a story that pulls on your heartstrings with a message of "Love May Not Conquer All" but when you are in love life means more.

In this film Jack (Andrew McCarthy) is an executive in a financial brokerage firm trying to impress the firm's president, Drew Clayton (Chris Gillett), in hopes of a promotion. However, Jack is dating the fabulously rich and elegant Demi Clayton (Stephanie Mills), who happens to be Drew's daughter. Although Demi's mother Clarisse (Jane Moffat) doesn't necessarily approve of Jack and would prefer her daughter to date a man within their social circle, Jack still plans on proposing. Trying to create the perfect proposal, Jack signs up for dance lessons in preparation for his proposal to Demi at her father's lavish annual Christmas Dance. But when sparks start to fly between Jack and his dance instructor, Christine (Michelle Nolden), Jack will have to make some important decisions before it is too late.

"Come Dance With Me" again is not a typical Christmas movie. Its not about "Orphans" or "Santa". Its about a man deciding on what he truly wants in life.

I will watch it again. I am still smiling thinking about the film!

Dance theme, pleasant Hallmark movie with Andrew McCarthy.
TxMike3 November 2022
Andrew McCarthy, about 49 when this was filmed, is Jack. He is a financial guy working for a firm in the city and dating the big bosses daughter. Jack is a pretty traditional guy from Kansas originally, the daughter is quite different. She has no job and enjoys the fancy, some might say trivial, life with emphasis on friends and social media. It is hard to see them as a couple for the long haul.

However marrying the daughter would pretty well set him financially for life. The boss even tells him that in so many words. Jack needs to learn to dance so as not to embarrass himself at the yearly family Christmas dance so happens upon a small dance studio run by an attractive lady. We sense that, this being a Hallmark movie, in the long run she might be a more suitable love interest.

The lady has a big issue come up, a firm wants her out and Jack is the financial point man for the deal. But she doesn't want to give up her little studio, maybe Jack can help her?

While the story has a relatively predictable story arc it is fun to see how they get there. Some of the best scenes are the two of them dancing together. My wife and I enjoyed it at home on DVD from our public library.

Tolerable
anchoress7211 December 2019
Tolerable Christmas movie, with a very repetitive musical track. I'm not sure why several other reviewers were freaking out about McCarthy's age-he's only 10 years older than Nolden.

nice romantic film
asinyne11 December 2012
I enjoyed this movie very much and so did my wife. Its very romantic. The leading lady is very beautiful and moved gracefully. Perhaps the plot is nothing new but it worked for me. I also thought the lighting was very well done, especially in the dance studio scenes which certainly set the tone for the film. Andrew McCarthy is a fine actor and the movie suited his talents. There were times when things developed in a clumsy fashion but for the most part it sailed along in fine style. I'm not totally sure the chemistry between the two leads was dead on but the chemistry between me and Christine was awesome! This is a classy movie with a good cast and I give it a solid edge over most similar holiday fare...try it out!

The usual from Hallmark
caseybones1 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This is typical Hallmark and fits into their usual formula...the lead's girlfriend/boyfriend is a ditz/evil, the lead finds his soulmate totally innocently, the lead works for an evil empire attempting to take over the soulmate's business/building/town/resort. There is always snow and lots of Christmas lights. If you've seen more than two Hallmark movies, you'll know the ending in the first 10 minutes.

There are a couple of redeeming features, one being the nice dance sequences. Michelle Nolden is an exquisite and extremely graceful dancer and the camera follows her beautifully. I don't know if she studied dance or is a really well-coached actress but I did enjoy watching her. McCarthy isn't bad, either.

A little variation on the music would have been nice. That same song, repeated umpteen times in the movie, becomes brain lint.

The Feet Follow the Heart
boblipton8 December 2012
Andrew McCarthy wants to marry the boss' daughter and secure his place in business. Her family has a tradition of ballroom dancing at Christmas. To impress her father and gain his approval, Andrew takes dancing lessons and falls in love with his instructor, Mary Long, in this superior Hallmark Christmas TV-movie.

Although the story sags occasionally from the minutiae of romantic comedy plotting, the heart of the movie, the self-realization that McCarthy comes to while learning how to dance and the growing relationship between him and his dancing partner is beautifully staged and performed, with a graceful camera caressing them as they move.

Howard Hawks was once asked how to make a great picture. He said "Three good scenes and no bad ones." This movie has those good scenes and more.

Andrew McCarthy is way to old for his part.
northpaw777722 December 2012
Another corny movie from the HM Channel. I love watching a good Christmas movie, but the ones that I usually find on this Channel are a little over the top. I really like Andrew McCarthy, but what were the people who cast his part thinking? They needed an actor at least 15 years younger for this role. The lady that they picked for his mother could have passed for his wife. The story line was nothing new. It was just totally unbelievable. Sorry, this movie didn't do anything to help his career. It just made him look stupid. He was much better in the part that he played in the 2009 "National Tree" Christmas movie. At least that one had a good story and was better suited to his age.

I DO remember being TOTALLY disappointed!
adoptshelterpetstoday22 December 2014
The previews for this movie were exquisite! I could hardly wait to see...what I though was going to be...a wonderfully enchanted, romantic Christmas movie with talented players! But not so...not at all...

I greatly enjoyed Andrew McCarthy with his talent and humor in both "Bernie" movies...but after seeing his portrayal in this movie, his talent must have died since then...OR obviously this was not the right part for him. And the scenes with his pretended English accent and expressions were so awkward.

All I can say "good" about this movie is that it's good for those who have short memories since:

the majority of scenes were the dance studio scenes,

with the same song,

with very similar lengths and outcomes...

...played over and over ad nauseum.

If you don't have a short memory, watching it more than once only increases the dull effect...boredom.

Best-Come Dance With Me ****
edwagreen22 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Andrew McCarthy, though finally looking a little older, has never been better as far as this wonderful, endearing film goes.

He is the hot-shot in a business firm, successful and just about ready to marry the daughter of the boss. To impress them at their holiday dance, he takes dancing lessons and that's where the fun begins.

The more complications that come into the plot, the story just seems to get better and better. When the dance studio is threatened with eviction, McCarthy soon learns that his business is leading the way for this. He can't bring himself to tell the owner, his dance instructor, and besides the two beginning having a fond attachment for each other. You just wonder when she will find out who he really is. We know that has to happen since life follows a natural order. Yet, you don't care because the story between choosing love over wealth is forever endearing.

This is the kind of movie to watch on a slow afternoon, preferably a rainy afternoon.
jfarms19563 December 2013
Come Dance With Me is best enjoyed by those who are 21 years and up who are romantic at heart. Romance and music mixed with non-malice betrayal are the themes of this movie. This is the kind of movie to watch on a slow afternoon, preferably a rainy afternoon. You might best enjoy this movie with a glass of wine rather than a bowl of popcorn. The alternate title "Christmas Dance" has little to do with Christmas Magic, rather the magic of music and the heart. The actors/actresses do a decent job in the movie. The movie is easily forgotten by the next day -- yet it is a pleasant movie to watch with someone you love or even a best friend (if you are a woman). Let's face it, it is a chick flick. Guys may not enjoy it much, except with their girlfriend or significant other. A pleasant way to spend the afternoon.

Lovely Christmas movie
katgildez25 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I loved this movie. The haunting melody danced to throughout the movie is charming. The theme of choosing relationship over money was heartwarming. The mom who comes to visit and helps the son realize he needs to make a healthier choice than choosing the boss's daughter was the perfect touch. I watch this show every Christmas without fail.

Truly horrid
hilary_mae-912-8056124 July 2021
The protagonist had one little xmas play mishap when she was 8 and she's scarred for life? Ridiculous. She's grown and she has the maturity of a child.

Calling her brother Sherman Jr every sentence; ridiculous.

Had a nice dinner in a fancyish restaurant and hasn't got the class to take off her toque. Ghastly.

Boss, ridiculous character.

Almost everyone in the movie, ridiculous. Unrealistic, soppy people.

The men are passive aggressive and guilt the women for having jobs. Appalling, domineering, patriarchal nonsense.

I couldn't make it through this absurd film; I was feeling bilious.

Christians really need to stop making movies.

A Hallmark classic.
rightisright10 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The writing and acting in this movie are light years ahead of what Hallmark passes off as a Christmas movie these days. Andrew McCarthy is solid in the lead, while Michelle Nolden adds grace, class and timeless beauty.

What an enjoyable movie. The characters were real, the story interesting and the chemistry between the two main characters was evident. I enjoyed the writing and the sets.

Feel the music with your heart
MysteryGirl11 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Andrew McCarthy has steadily been an actor whose movies take you into the moment, where you magically lose yourself, and once the credits roll, you're still there.

"Come Dance With Me" doesn't grab you immediately, but slowly pulls you in. Although there are a few scenes that just don't mesh, McCarthy pulls it off. His brooding, ruggedly handsome demeanor is seductive, and it undoubtedly crosses the movie to viewer barrier.

Casting for this movie was mostly on target, except for the bosses daughter. There's absolutely no chemistry in what seems to be a composite airhead overacted and stereotypical blonde type. As a viewer/audience, you just wish she'd go away, but at the same type it gives you the chance for a few giggles at her expense.

Since the movie title does contain "Dancing" you're in for a pleasant surprise. McCarthy pulls off a beautiful waltz, and for me - he can fill my dance card for the entire event.

Although I rated this movie an 8, it's certainly not in the same caliber of Rogers and Astaire, but with more than a few wonderful scenes, where the magic of the movies comes alive .... we can blissfully dance the night away.

One of my favorites!
beyoutful13 November 2018
I loved this movie. I felt Andrew McCarthy and Michelle Nolden had such chemistry. The music drew me in! I don't understand the reviews saying it was boring. Yes, Andrew McCarthy is much older than Michelle, but he's a classic and I don't notice the age difference. I wish Hallmark would play this movie again at Christmas but they don't so I bought the movie so I can watch anytime I want, which if I do!!

"Shall We Dance" Christmas version
HotToastyRag22 December 2020
If you liked Shall We Dance, and you want to see what it would look like if it had a Christmastime setting, check out the Hallmark special Christmas Dance. Richard Gere isn't the only one who can take secret dance lessons and practice during work. Andrew McCarthy can do it too!

Teamed with dancer Michelle Nolden, there's an extra element to the story that makes for a sweet romance with a heart-wrenching conflict. While Andrew takes private dance lessons to impress his girlfriend, the boss's superficial daughter, he's drawn to the serious, calm, and steady Michelle. She's about to get evicted from her dance studio, curtesy of Andrew's company, but she doesn't know he's involved. Of course, he lies to her about his identity because he doesn't want to hurt her feelings - and because he's falling in love.

The one fly in the ointment? Mary Long's character, Andrew's mother. Nothing against Mary, especially since I enjoy seeing her in other movies, but she's far too involved with her grown-up son's love life for my taste. Besides that, this is a really sweet Hallmark movie. Believe it or not, it has more dance sequences than A Nutcracker Christmas, and they're very fun to watch.

DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. During some of the waltz scenes, the camera swirls. Also, there are strobelights in the dance club in the beginning that will make you sick. In other words, "Don't Look, Mom!"
