Jeff Cutter and Dan Trachtenberg are no strangers to taking residence within larger franchises. The director of photography and director, respectively, have collaborated on feature films set in both the worlds of “Predator” and “Cloverfield” — and delivered best-of entrants along the way.
And both offered unique challenges, too: For Hulu’s “Prey,” the trim, exciting “Predator” prequel from 2022, the duo took advantage of the great outdoors in a massive scope. While their 2016 film “10 Cloverfield Lane” relied on a virtually all-interior pressure cooker set in a John Goodman-run bunker.

“We were probably 95% location,” Cutter said of shooting “Prey,” noting that they “only had three or four stage days where we used stages for campfire scenes.“ He and Trachtenberg shot the prequel with anamorphic lenses over nearly 60 days in Calgary, drumming up the latest project featuring the time-traveling Predator (played here...

On the face of it, “The Pope’s Exorcist” would have you believe that it’s rooted in the real-life experiences of the late Father Gabriele Amorth, the Catholic priest who served for 30 years as the head exorcist of the Diocese of Rome. Its screenwriting credits proclaim as much, for starters, while a surfeit of onscreen dates and locations in the early going lend proceedings the faintest of docudrama veneers; moreover, the film is backed by the non-profit production arm of the Jesuit research university Loyola Marymount, with Loyola rector Father Edward J. Siebert among its executive producers.
Even Catholics in high places, it turns out, have a sense of humor: You needn’t wait for the “work of fiction” disclaimer in the closing credits to discern that “The Pope’s Exorcist” is ripely fantastical trash, inspired by Amorth’s work in much the same way that SunnyD is inspired by Florida oranges,...

Home to films like “Lady Bird,” “Eighth Grade” and “Mid90s,” A24 is synonymous with a certain brand of indie, auteur-driven coming-of-age story. The company’s latest is “Funny Pages,” the debut feature film from writer-director Owen Kline (who you might recognize as Frank from “The Squid and the Whale”). Set in the suburbs of New Jersey, “Funny Pages” follows Robert (Daniel Zolghadri), a talented high schooler determined to make his way as a cartoonist. When his beloved teacher suddenly passes away, he rebels against his upper-middle class upbringing and abandons future plans to attend art school.
Robert’s decision to drop out of school, rent sketchy (i.e. illegal) lodgings in a boiler room and take a low-paying assistant job bring him into the path of Wallace (Matthew Maher), a former employee at one of the comic magazines Robert idolizes. With the singular goal of getting Wallace to mentor him,...

And just like that, winter has come again. HBO Max’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by the return of the king. Or more accurately: the return of the queen … of the Seven Kingdoms.
Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, just over three years after Game of Thrones concluded in controversial fashion with “The Iron Throne.” This new series is a prequel, depicting the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons from George R.R. Martin’s lore. When dragon fights dragon, the realm will be torn asunder. But the viewer will certainly delight in all the Targaryen action.

An impressive slate of A24 films are coming to HBO Max next month, including Oscar-winners like 2015’s “Room” and Alex Garland’s directorial debut “Ex Machina.”
A total of 28 A24 films will arrive on the streamer on Aug. 1, timed to the studio’s tenth anniversary and marking the largest collection of A24 films made available to stream on the platform. Much of the lineup consists of films released prior to 2016, when A24 was still a distribution house and not yet the full-fledged studio it is today.
Some buzzy titles such as “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Eighth Grade,” “Mid90s” and dozens more are not on this list because of prior deals the studio set up with other streamers. Most A24 films can be found on Apple TV+ and Showtime, who set up deals to serve as the home for a number of their digital releases in 2018 and 2019, respectively. But as those deals near a close,...

Okay, okay… I know what you’re thinking – at age 76, just how badass could Sylvester Stallone possibly be? Well, in the trailer for his latest film, Samaritan, he’s about to show you. After nearly 5 decades – Decades! – as one of the biggest action heroes on the planet, one would think he’d be ready to hang up the can of whoop-ass, but you’d be wrong.
Thirteen-year-old Sam Cleary (Javon “Wanna” Walton) suspects that his mysterious and reclusive neighbor Mr. Smith (Sylvester Stallone) is actually a legend hiding in plain sight. Twenty-five years ago, Granite City’s super-powered vigilante, Samaritan, was reported dead after a fiery warehouse battle with his rival, Nemesis.
Most believe Samaritan perished in the fire, but some in the city, like Sam, have hope that he is still alive. With crime on the rise and the city on the brink of chaos, Sam makes it his...

Netflix excited Quentin Tarantino fans when it announced in March that an extended version of the director’s “The Hateful Eight” would be available to stream this month. The extended edition landed April 25 on Netflix as planned, albeit with one massive surprise: The movie has been uploaded as a miniseries with four episodes each running approximately 50 minutes. If you’re looking for an extremely fun horror action-thriller filled with all kinds of gratuitous blood and gore, Overlord is the film for you!
I enjoyed everything that I’ve seen from the film in the trailers that have been released, but they don’t even scratch the surface of how much of an insane wild ride that this movie is! Overlord is an absolute blast and I know horror fans are going to enjoy the hell out of it.
The story is set during World War II and follows members of the 101st Airborn Division dropping into Germany to take down a radio tower located in a church. The movie starts out with one of the most intense sequences that I’ve seen in any WWII movie as the paratroopers are flying into Germany.

“Overlord” is one of the best video game movies ever made, and it’s not even based on a video game.
Filmmakers have been struggling for decades to adapt an actual video game story into a great movie, but many films have already successfully adapted the storytelling style of video games to the big screen. Take a look at the checkpoint gameplay mechanics of “Run Lola Run,” and the point-and-click problem solving of “Cop Car.” Consider the daredevil side scrolling of “District B13,” and the destructive fighting-game avatars of “Colossal.”
And now, check out “Overlord,” the ultimate Nazi zombie movie. The genre goes back at least as far as Ken Wiederhorn’s “Shock Waves,” which starred Peter Cushing as a mad scientist building an undead reich on an uncharted island, but it really came to life (pun intended) in video games. By the time the “Wolfenstein” games introduced Mecha-Hitler as a level boss,...

‘Fess up: You wanna see some Nazis get good and fucked up, don’t you?
No, we’re not talking about the current plague of willfully ignorant racists and dangerously unstable, wild-card chuckleheads, though we’d be all too happy to see that collective pox on society fall off the face of the earth. We mean the old kind, the rat bastards who tore through Europe decades ago and still have a hold on the popular imagination as the definition of villainy. There’s no “on both sides” bullshit with these soldiers and S.

This is the opening scene of the film and if features an army of World War II paratroopers who have to jump into hellish battle. They’ve been trained for war, but they have no idea what nightmarish horrors await them once they’re in Germany. This is actually an incredibly intense scene!
The supernatural horror film is set on the eve of D-day when an army of Us paratroopers drop in behind enemy lines, to infiltrate a small village. The last decade has seen a surge of “Nazi horror” movies that struck enough of a chord to kick-start a subgenre. Most are risible and bypassed big screens to debut on DVD, prior to perishing in pound store video bins, but there are a few gems amongst the twaddle. Dead Snow 2: Red Vs Dead is a subgenre standout and one of a small fistful to feature the Nazi undead. Along with the lesser likes of War of the Dead, Frankenstein’s Army and Outpost, these utilised our fear/hatred of Nazism to shape a new supernatural antagonist.
Overlord is the latest Nazi horror and one of very few to make it into cinemas. Following his impressive, criminally under-seen debut Son of a Gun, director Julius Avery, with screenwriters Billy Ray, Mark L Smith and producer Jj Abrams give Nazi horror a bigger budget/ creative bolstering with enthralling results; for Overlord is a frenzied,...

Fox has hired “Overlord” director Julius Avery to write and direct a “Flash Gordon” movie.
The studio had been in negotiations in 2015 with “Kingsman” director Matthew Vaughn to helm “Flash Gordon.” Vaughn will now produce with John Davis and Hearst Entertainment & Syndication Group.
Fox senior vice president Matt Reilly is overseeing “Flash Gordon” for the studio. C.J. Kettler is overseeing for Hearst.
Flash Gordon originated in 1934 as a science-fiction comic strip created by and originally drawn by Alex Raymond to compete with the Buck Rogers strip. The story opened with Earth threatened by a collision with the planet Mongo and Flash’s friend Dr. Zarkov inventing a rocket ship in an attempt to stop the disaster. The comic strip led to a serial starring Buster Crabbe and multiple movies and television series.

20th Century Fox is moving forward with their Flash Gordon movie and they hired Overlord director Julius Avery to helm it! Obviously the studio likes what he did with Overlord, which has yet to be released in theaters, but it looks bat-shit crazy!
At one point Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn was looking to direct the Flash Gordon movie, but it looks like he’s just going to produce it now. With all of the Kingsman films that he’s got in development, I guess he just doesn’t have the time.
Flash Gordon was created in 1934 by iconic artist Alex Raymond, and the story follows Dale Arden and the mad scientist Hans Zasrkov, as they end up on the planet Mongo fighting a tyrannical ruler named Ming the Merciless.

Play this movie as loud as you can. Turn the volume all the way up, strap in, and prepare for an extremely intense cinematic experience. I am a sucker for World War II movies, pretty much any/all of them, so I will happily admit I probably enjoyed this a bit more than most will, unless you're also a fan of WWII movies. With that said, it's an awesome movie anyway. Overlord is a WWII horror movie from Australian director Julius Avery, making his first big studio movie after Son of a Gun in 2014. This time he collaborated with Bad Robot and producer J.J. Abrams to deliver an intense, extra loud, uber violent, enrapturing WWII action movie spiced up with some gnarly horror. It hits real hard, right from the start, but never drags. You have to go see this movie in theaters - the big screen, big sound experience really,...

And, the clip shows several of the characters bringing one of their own back from the dead; the results are chaotic. As well, Overlord was directed by Julius Avery (Son of a Gun). And, this title will be in theatres this November 9th. The official synopsis talks of a French guide and a mysterious church. After premiering at last month’s Fantastic Fest, loopy-looking horror-thriller Overlord has garnered a strong critical response that this latest trailer makes full use of, proudly displaying the film’s 93% Rotten Tomatoes score amidst a series of encouraging quotes.
Aside from such plaudits, the trailer offers much of the same WWII madness that you saw in the first promo, though with a little more emphasis on the film’s horror leanings. While the last trailer saw the undead action unfold over a rocking AC/DC soundtrack that made fighting off the undead feel like a fun night out, this one seems more keen to convey the claustrophobic panic of the characters and the twisted nature of the Nazi experiments they’re investigating. Of course, with a premise this off-the-wall, it’s best assumed that Overlord has no intention of taking itself too seriously.

"A thousand year army..." Paramount has dropped the first official trailer for a movie called Overlord, a secret project from Bad Robot made by Australian filmmaker Julius Avery (Son of a Gun). Most films are not Cloverfield movies, but when it comes to Paramount and Bad Robot productions from J.J. Abrams, the speculation runs rampant. That was certainly the case with Overlord, a new World War II supernatural thriller that had a quiet production and virtually nothing else revealed until the trailer, which has now arrived today ahead of a November release.
Back at CinemaCon, Abrams emphatically confirmed it was not a Cloverfield film, but rather a standalone feature from Julius Avery (Son of a Gun). Scripted by Billy Ray and Mark L. Smith (The Revenant), the cast includes Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, Pilou Asbæk, John Magaro, and Mathilde Ollivier. The first trailer sells a fun-looking, schlocky Medal of Honor-meets-Wolfenstein (or Saving Private Ryan-meets-The Thing, if we’re talking films) hybrid of WWII thrills and supernatural horror.
Check it out below.
Overlord opens on November 9, 2018.

Paramount Pictures is finally pulling back the curtain on “Overlord,” the mysterious supernatural horror film produced by J.J. Abrams. The first trailer is a World War II bloodbath and a revisionist history lesson, which no doubt makes “Overlord” seem like a genre spin on both “Saving Private Ryan” and “Inglourious Basterds.”
“Overlord” stars “Fences” and “The Leftovers” breakout Jovan Adepo as member of a U.S. paratroopers squad who drop behind enemy lines on the eve of D-Day and uncover the Nazis are experimenting with supernatural forces to win WWII. The supporting cast includes Jacob Anderson, Wyatt Russell, Bokeem Woodbine, and “Game of Thrones” actor Pilou Asbæk.

Producer J.J. Abrams makes films with aliens and monsters, time travel and death-defying stunts. Yet in 17 years, his Bad Robot Productions has never released R-rated content — until now. Paramount Pictures’ CinemaCon presentation delivered the first footage from “Overlord,” out this fall from sophomore feature director Julius Avery (“Son of a Gun”).
“This movie is batshit crazy” and “super fun,” said Abrams via videotaped introduction, addressing the 4,300 seat Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, Jacob Anderson, Pilou Asbæk, Dominic Applewhite, Iain de Caestecker, John Magaro, Mathilde Ollivier, and Bokeem Woodbine form the ensemble cast.
The footage opens in June 1944, the night before Allied marines invade Normandy on D-Day. Enemy fire attacks a plane full of World War II soldiers, and several parachute into the ocean. Survivors trek through the forest, and one spots an abandoned Nazi compound and peers through a hole in the wall. A bloody eye leaps into frame.

J.J. Abrams seems to be enjoying his Cloverfield franchise and the mystery that surrounds it. The Cloverfield Paradox made a surprising debut on Netflix after the Super Bowl. The movie was met with a lot of mixed reviews. Some people downright hated it. A lot of people wondered what the fate of the fourth Cloverfield film would be after Paradox was released.
That film is tentatively titled Overlord and it's already done shooting. As of right now, the plan is to release it on the big screen. Abrams recently spoke with Digital Spy about the project, but first explains that it was fun to release The Cloverfield Paradox without anyone knowing:
"It didn't really feel like it was any fun to release [The Cloverfield Paradox] with everybody knowing that it was coming. Could we possibly do this and keep it a secret and release the thing in the way we did?...

Capping off a breathless fortnight for the super-secret Cloverfield series, J.J. Abrams has told Digital Spy that Overlord is a “crazy movie.”
The WWII-set thriller, which places a group of American paratroopers on a collision course with Nazis and supernatural forces, is now known as Cloverfield 4, and will presumably see a release in October of this year. Julius Avery (Son of a Gun) is the director behind the clandestine project, while we understand Wyatt Russell (Black Mirror) and Jovan Adepo have been tapped to lead the charge against a crumbling Third Reich.
But trouble is afoot, as the Nazis have been conducting experiments of the supernatural kind. It’s this revisionist loophole that will allow J.J. Abrams and Co. to embed Overlord in the wider Cloverfield universe, and though he refused to be drawn on story details, he did promise a “crazy” expansion of Bad Robot’s anthology series.

Julius Avery (Son of a Gun) is the director behind the clandestine project, while we understand Wyatt Russell (Black Mirror) and Jovan Adepo have been tapped to lead the charge against a crumbling Third Reich.

Update: Read our review of The Cloverfield Paradox.
Two years ago, Dan Trachtenberg’s directorial debut 10 Cloverfield Lane arrived, bringing new life to the sci-fi franchise initially launched in 2008. Following the success of the film, it was revealed that J.J. Abrams would continue developing more entries and the newest will arrive with God Particle aka The Cloverfield Paradox, and it’s coming very, very soon.
Directed by another newcomer, Julius Onah, it stars Daniel Brühl, Elizabeth Debicki, Aksel Hennie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris O’Dowd, John Ortiz, David Oyelowo, and Zhang Ziyi and follows a group of astronauts in orbit when the Earth disappears. In a special, unprecedented surprise, the first trailer has landed and Netflix has announced it is coming out after the Super Bowl concludes.
We’ll also be getting another entry in the franchise soon as /Film recently reported that the upcoming WWII-set thriller Overlord is actually a Cloverfield film.
