A love story with a psychological twist
otsuji12 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Part love story, part psychological thriller, Pali Road is an unusual and memorable film. The strong multicultural cast, the Hawaiian setting, and mix of Asian and Polynesian cultural themes make this a unique film that deserves a wider audience. The plot is tight and quick paced, so the story never lags. Performances by the actors and actresses are strong and convincing. The ending will strike some as abrupt and perhaps a tad unsatisfying, but this minor flaw does not diminish the overall quality of the film and may even enrich the element of mystery. The cinematography is gorgeous and gives the movie a strong sense of place. Strongly recommended.

Little gem !!!
peradetlicpera2 May 2016
If you are tired of the Hollywood blockbusters, this movie will be a perfect one for you! It has a little bit of everything: mystery, suspense, romance and an ending that will leave you scratching your head. Story is believable and very well put together, directing is superb and there are some scenes in the movie that take breath away. Actors were relatively unknown to me but they did an amazing job portraying their characters. Michelle Chen was especially convincing in her role of Lily, but not only she is a great actress but very hot too XD I warmly recommend this cute and unique romance to everyone with a heart. I give it an 8 star rating!

Original Romantic thriller
albertxjonas22 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I thought the movie Pali Road was an original romantic thriller. The characters felt real and authentic. The acting was excellent- all around, with no weak spots which is unusual for even great movies. The story kept me engaged and curious throughout. My only negative comment would be that the ending was a bit too abrupt. It felt too unfinished. Overall, though an excellent film that I highly recommend. A modern day East meets West Romeo & Juliet with a twist. It was such a nice experience for me, as a viewer. Such a different story and beautiful cinematography. Some of the shots were truly amazing. They must have shot it in Hawaii or some place similar. The film is beautiful to watch but has a great story too.

This is such a gem of a movie
novoselac11 March 2016
Pali Road is an exceptional romantic psycho thriller, that will hold your attention through to the end, but also leaving you scratching your head. It is about a woman who wakes up in a completely different life, after a car accident, and no one around her (not even her parents) remembers the details about her "original" life, nor her real boyfriend. Lilly will have to question her sanity and her feelings in order to reveal the truth. These actors were relatively unknown to me but I was amazed by Michelle Chen's performance. She did a great job in portraying Lilly and the rest of the crew did a decent job too. The script is cleverly written and the story is easy to follow. I highly enjoyed watching this movie and I give it a high recommendation.

Suspense Thriller
bpnakamoto8 December 2015
I really enjoyed Pali Road. It had everything a you could ask for. There was suspense, romance, drama and beautiful back ground scenery. I loved the story line it was mysterious and suspenseful. I was on the edge of my seat and a couple of times some scenes made me jump because it surprised me. The actors and actress did an excellent job. The casting was perfect. I was not expecting much due to a locally filmed movie but I was pleasantly surprised on how well the movie was made. I didn't like the ending it ended abruptly. I would have liked to have had some closure. It made me feel something was missing. It made you have to think about what happened around the mystery. I would go see it again and this time I would follow it a lot closer now that I have an idea what to look for.

An Intense Psycho Thriller
geraldyelverton13 December 2015
Recently, I had the pleasure of screening the film "Pali Road". The film is about a woman who dates a young doctor, but after a car accident wakes up to find she is married to his professional rival and has a son. No one in her life, not even her parents remember the original love of her life, causing her to question her thoughts as well.

Pali Road, written by Doc Pedrolie and Victoria Arch is an intense psycho analysis of the human mind and shows the true power of the heart. The script and storyline are complex without being difficult to follow. A true intelligently written story.

Jonathan Hua Lang Lim directs a beautifully told story with sweeping shots and a serviceable pace. The story moves at a rate that causes the viewer to want to stay with it. He also does wonders in the direction of his actors.

The young woman is played by actress, Michelle Chen (Badges of Fury) who I was unfamiliar with before viewing this title. She serves as a great central character who is going through this psycho analysis. Her acting is top notch as she really conveys the beats and levels of love, fear and doubt as the plot unfolds. Pali Road will be a key vehicle in familiarizing this talented audience with a mass audience. Film fans will recognize the two leading male characters as Jackson Rathbone (Twilight) and Sung Kang (Fast and Furious). Rathbone, who plays the former love interest before the accident does well as the romantic lead. Kang, who plays the new husband and father really reaches a depth that was not seen in the uber popular action franchise he is known for. This movie proves as beneficial for the actors to showcase their talents as they prove beneficial for the film.

I highly recommend any film fans, or fans of its star actors to take the time to view this title. At 92 minutes it is not a marathon to watch as the plot moves swiftly. A really well put together film.

suspenful creative plot with local culture portrayed
walcyk10 December 2015
The plot is suspenseful and the characters are intriguing. It is creative and the "what will happen next" keeps viewers riveted to the film. I love the winding of local culture and the beauty of the islands was well interweaved. The photography/cinematography was beautiful, it takes a real artist to catch some of the scenes. I was surprised by the outcome of the film and like that I did not expect it. The female roles were well cast and I kept watching the faces of the female characters. The cinematography was expert in coloring the background scenes of the islands to show viewers the inner beauty of Hawaii. It was interesting to see the interaction of the in laws and parents and I think they were portrayed as many of the old time parents thought, those of the "fifties". In addition, the film showed a suspense, a girls plight, riveting portrayal of family roles and local cultural roles, scenery, changes in life, choices in life and how those affect ones' outcome, responsibilities in life. After seeing the film you go out to think about our own lives and the movies makes one think of how our own choices affect where and whom we are.

Surprisingly great !!!
bondza23 April 2016
This is a great and suspenseful romance with a very original script that will touch your heart. The movie tells a story about love which is always stronger than lies and deception. The main character, Lilly Zhang goes through a mental torture when she awakes from a car accident and finds out that her world has turned upside down. She is married to a man she barely knows, while no one remembers her true love, her boyfriend Neil (portrayed by Jackson Rathbone). Lilly goes through emotions of doubt and fear, as the story unfolds, but also getting closer and closer to the truth. Michelle Chan did an outstanding performance portraying Lilly and I will definitely search for some more of her movies here on IMDb. That also counts for the director too. Watch it, you won't regret it!

Suspenseful and yet Exciting
ZeldaM22 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
We were truly impressed by Pali Road, and hope you will show it in our local theaters soon. Upon knowing that our friend, Elevila Giles, had a part in the film - we were excited to see it. We were not disappointed. The movie had an exciting beginning, and a very intriguing story. We were not expecting such a twist of events, and it kept us in suspense. Very well done and wonderful casting. Acting was great in all parts. We are looking forward to Pali Road 2! So we can see what happens with the doctor. Wonderful production. A must see. If you like stories that keep you guessing and suspenseful, than this one is great. I am so proud of our friend and all who were involved with production.

Bad acting, waste of time, do not fool by high IMDb rating
gencersancar1 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This is the first review I write for a movie just to warn you so do not waste your time/money.My wife and I just came out from the movie. We chose this movie because it was in a nearby theater, its story line seemed intriguing and it had high IMDb score. However, it was a total bust. We both find the movie dull and acting was so horrible. There is no way that you believe any part of the so called romance that the movie supposed to have. We rather have chosen the movie for its potential mystical story line. However, even the "OK" suspense you feel during the movie is not good enough to watch this movie. I believe its IMDb rating will decrease very soon.

One of Hawaii International Film Festival 2015 must-see film
tyfferzy23 November 2015
With Pali Road, Jonathan Lim delivers a love mystery that leaves you walking away still thinking of the film and the story. Pali Road stars Michelle Chen, Jackson Rathbone, Sung Kang, and Henry Ian Cusick with breathtaking scenery of Hawaii taking you on an emotional-charged journey of the heart and mind. Originally scheduled for two showings at the 2015 Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF), Pali Road and HIFF opened a third showing by popular response from the Honolulu community. Pali Road should be a sure thing in its nominations for the Halekulani Golden Orchid Award for Best Narrative as well as for its cinematography and performances. It's a definite must-see when it becomes available in theaters and online.

It was pretty decent
kairoskop10 February 2024
..... It was a pretty decent movie. Normally I'd give it a 6,5 but it'll get the other 0,5 for the general effort and kind hearted moral of the story.

The truth is some scenes dragged a little and it could have been shorter, also there were some oddities such as why she didn't call the boyfriend while researching her past, but overall it wasn't disappointing and it didn't feel like a waste of time in the end, which for me is the ultimate criterion as to if a movie was good or not.

It also has sort of a moral in the story which is subtle and down to earth.

It's a good movie for a lazy night..

Terrible acting and writing
pinnacle5525 May 2018
I don't know how this movie got such high rated reviews, maybe we watched different films, but in ny opinion it failed in several different ways. The writing is cheesy and the acting is awful. The only person whose acting was believable was the Neil character, everyone else around him was just reading a script. Even her pretending to be a doctor was cringeworthy to watch.

Beautiful And Suspenseful
sportsbros80828 February 2016
The "waking up and not remembering your life" meme has been played out in many film and TV shows in the past. However, "Pali Road" takes it to a new level.

Lily (Michelle Chen) wakes up after a car accident and it thrust into a life she has no memory of. The memories that she does have are those of being with her boyfriend, Neil (Jackson Rathbone) and not of her current husband and child.

Her family and friends insist that this current life is the only reality there is. Lily begins to question her sanity and the film takes a darker, more suspenseful turn.

The acting is excellent with Chen and Rathbone delivering moving performances. The cinematography adds so much to the film that it almost feels like an additional character. Scenes go from bright, warm and lush to dark and brooding as the film progresses. Director Jonathan Hua Lang Lim keeps the story moving and delivers some spectacular camera shots.

Ultimately this film is about the power of love to overcome all obstacles. The love that Lily feels is stronger than the "reality" that is telling her something different. Watching this film will make many people question their own reality and the choices and compromises they have made in their lives.

I think really good movies will leave you thinking and questioning and "Pali Road" is no exception. If you get a chance to see this film I highly recommend that you do.

Love can not be ignored
borakvaka20 April 2016
Lily is a young girl who survives a car accident and wakes up confused, married for a man she doesn't love and having a son she can't remember. Although her husband is not completely unknown to her, according to her memories, she has a boyfriend Neil, who is a doctor, and her current husband was actually his rival. But what complicates the situation is that even her parents are saying that her memories are not real, and a consequence of trauma after the car accident. Everyone around are trying to convince her, that Neil is a product of her imagination. The movie was an exciting ride, a clever and unpredictable romance with some elements of thriller, where it was hard to know the truth until the end. The acting was spot on, the story believable and I got very emotional at the end. I give this movie a strong 9!!

Excellent !!!
littlespacefish23 April 2016
Beside Hollywood production I love watching Korean and Japanese movies, but I am not really familiar with the Chinese cinematography. Jonathan Hua Lang Lim, who was completely unknown to me before, did a great job with this movie. There is some amazing background scenery, that is combined with a top-notch direction, so I will surely be paying attention to this director's future work. Acting is good and the story is very well put together. I didn't find any plot holes in the script, everything made sense and I loved the ending. I highly recommend the movie to all the romance lovers, even though it has some elements of thriller so I am sure the audience of many different genres will like it.

I mean wow what a film
jannicka-378656 May 2016
I love a good movie. You might find that many of the cast members are familiar from the blockbuster films twilight and fast and the furious, so you know it will be good.

This film really blew my mind. My friends and I, the whole theatre really, were enraptured by the astounding acting, enchanting dialogue, and really intricate plot. What would you do if you woke up in satin pjs in the wrong bed? The cultural motifs, (Hawaiian myth, Chinese girl with American boy, Korean doctor to the rescue) really struck a chord with us.

Anyways, get a crew, bring those you are looking to impress, and be sure to schedule time afterwards to deconstruct this beauty of a film.

Pali Road = Awesome!
donkapelo27 April 2016
I watched Pali Road in a cinema with a friend, and we both liked it very much. The movie is different than most of the romance-thrillers, because there are no clichés like you would find in every other romance, and its story is unconventional. The script is brilliant, and even though I know romances are rarely blockbusters, I truly hope it will get more audience in cinemas. The girl who plays Lily is sooo cute and talented, I will definitely be watching more of her work in the future. The director also did a great job, there were many beautiful scenes in the movie and which kept my attention to the very end. Overall, it was a pleasant experience, and I recommend it to anyone!

The only people rating this movie highly
rpn3134 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
... are clearly the white guys out there with an Asian fetish or the Chinese girls out there with a white fetish. I mean c'mon. The lead character is a chinese doctor (so presumably has a decent head on her shoulders) who is dating a grade school teacher with cheesy come on-lines earning minimum wage (and has to live in her house since he can't pay the rent in the pricey Oahu real estate market). Sooo in love is she with this dude that she shoots him down hard when he proposes, and breaks his heart saying marriage is "more than just love, it's about families coming together, kids", etc. Ok I hear you sister. Makes sense, a little harsh on the white dude but makes sense. The boyfriend is so distraught about being dumped that he loses attention of the road and crashes head on to a cement structure. Love hurts!

Strangely she wakes up no worse for wear, in satin sheets and undies in a gorgeous house with an outdoor heated pool, a Mercedes and a Bentley in the garage, and finds that she is actually married to a successful Korean doctor and has a cute little boy to boot. Hmmm don't wake me up from this coma! By all accounts the husband is tall and handsome, extremely caring, loving, generous, and gives her all the space she needs, and even treats her parents like his own.

But no.... this girl is apparently sooo in love with the white boyfriend that she rejects this new found reality, rejects even her child, and instead is rummaging through the forest at the site of the crash and a dilapidated house where she thought she lived, in order to find the boyfriend (hmmm the same guy who she refused to accept marriage to in the alternate reality she came from)? That makes zero sense. She searches for any record of this boyfriend but in this reality it seems he just doesn't exist. But everything else is the same. I guess when you have an Asian girl with a white fetish, this "nightmare" of a reality is just too much for her to handle. "I don't love you and I will never love you!" she exclaims to her "bizarro" world devoted husband in one of the final climatic moments. Wow. Really? Girl, you clearly suffered major brain damage. I won't spoil the rather mundane ending plot twist but that's basically the story line. A real face-palm through most of the movie.

The other things this movie doesn't have going for it: Michelle Chen's acting which is cringeworthy. I'm sorry, she sort of cute, but she gives off an air of snottiness that is seen in every character she plays. I don't know if that's the roles she gets or that's how she is in real life that comes through her acting. The acting from every other cast member is actually decent, and you can tell who's seasoned and who isn't. Michelle Chen looks like a newcomer but she's actually 36 years old so gotta get it together sister.

Also the movie just moved at a glacial pace. I kept looking at the clock wondering how this is a 90 minute movie, it felt like a 4-hour marathon of this girl crying on cue. The only time this movie had any excitement was when the husband and her parents had finally had enough and held her down to tell her she's crazy, stop obsessing over some imaginary white boy!

I'm giving it a 4 mostly for the acting of the other cast members, the high def images of the beautiful Hawaii landscape, and a little bit of suspense that was created at the start of the film.

One of the best movies lately
usafighter26 April 2016
I loved that this was not just a typical romance shot on the beautiful coasts of Hawaii, but a very unique and original movie. I really hope it will get to more audience, because it has all: suspension, mystery, romance, twists, GREAT ending!!! I liked the characters, they were convincing and their acting looked natural. Michelle Chen rocks, completely unknown to me, she is both gorgeous and extremely talented actress. I would love to see more of her work. The Director also did an outstanding job, some of the scenes are breathtaking, and the story is developed smoothly, making a viewer wonder what is the truth. I recommend Pali Road to everybody!

Fake reviews
Call-Me-Mr-Smith9 October 2019
Don't bother with this one, it's a poor knockout of Hallmark type of movies, with wooden acting, annoying music and stale script. Unless, of course, you are a student majoring in marketing or something similar, in which case you would be able to use it as a study subject for your thesis. Obviously, the thousands of fake upvoting, carefully avoiding to rate the movie at 10, choosing somewhat lower rates, and many positive reviews coming from contributors who reviewed only this title tell the sad story of a marketing hoax. Don't fall for it, run, don't turn back, avoid this movie like you would avoid a van with tinted windows, or a strange man in an alley wearing only a trench-coat.

Very good romantic drama
kcolsn2 May 2016
This is a romantic drama that will keep you guessing until the end. Michelle Chen plays a successful doctor dating an elementary school teacher Neil (Jackson Rathbone). Chen wakes up from a car accident married to her boss (Sung Kang) and no one in her life remembers Neil. All of the actors do a good job. Henry Ian Cusick as a therapist that tries to convince Chen that her life with Neil is not real is especially good. As the movie continues on you too begin to question which reality is correct. The director does an excellent job of building suspense throughout. The cinematography is top notch and makes Hawaii look both beautiful and a little dangerous. The composer's music is good at adding to the atmosphere. I would really recommend people to seek this movie out.

Thought provoking and Spiritual
Jade111822 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I was lucky enough to snag tickets for Pali Road at CAAMFest. The film kept me guessing from start to finish. The ending was really thought provoking and left me thinking about it. It is a soul-searching film. And I appreciated the spiritual themes that were at work as well. Even woke up the morning after still thinking about it... and that ending! I hope the film gets a wider release! I think more people need to see this. I hope it gets a bigger audience that it deserves! Really impressed by this story and had to write about it because I'm still thinking about it. Really good. That's all I say. Good performances. Good direction for the most part. I am so happy I lucked up and saw this film at the fest.

Bad
ijdavidson6 June 2022
I intended to go through all the reasons why this film is REALLY BAD, but that's been done well by other reviewers, so I'll just say a few things. This film is shapeless, lifeless, and largely incomprehensible. There are a lot of quick transitions between the two alternate lives that don't build toward anything. Michelle Chen has absolutely no screen luster whatever. This looks like some kind of vanity production or a Chinese-backed attempt to make money in the American market. Films like this depend on the impression that the main character looks crazy to the people around her because he or she is trying to make sense of an irrational universe; but Lily, the main character, really does make completely illogical decisions. You think that some nefarious plot to drive this woman crazy is going on because the Henry Ian Cusick character acts evil and ominous, but in fact that's just a red herring, even though there's absolutely no reason for him to act that way. Well, I could go on, but I'll finish up with two medical things that others may have missed: There is a scene where Lily is in a scanner, either CT or MRI, and one doctor says, "This should tell us what we need to know." That is completely wrong. There are all kinds of brain disorders in which the brain anatomy looks completely normal. Second, they talk about deep brain stimulation as a treatment. DBS has been tried only in severe schizophrenia, which Lily clearly does not have. DBS is used for the most part to treat people with movement disorders, like Parkinson's disease or essential tremor, not psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia. Conclusion: This limp rag of a film is strictly desperation time for insomniacs.
