Different good, unpleasant bad.
thisseatofmars9 November 2016
I liked much of Cat Sick Blues because it's twisted and different. Its opening is very strong (killer music, man) and parts of it are enjoyably visceral, like the scene where Ted remembers his cat exploding.

Other parts of Cat Sick Blues are unpleasant, and bad unpleasant, even for horror. Case in point: the rape scenes. The argument against pornography is that it objectifies women: it turns them into sexual objects. Very obviously, that goes for rape and murder, and women seem to exist only in this movie to become brutalized. Additionally, the barbed, phallic prosthetic that Ted wears is nothing short of disgusting.

These major shortcomings aside, much of Cat Sick Blue can be enjoyed: its tone, editing, colour, and sound are all well done. There are some great images, like Ted running down the canal, scaring away the seagulls, as well as the opening credits. I especially like the music and the screwed up mood Cat Sick Blues shoots for. Additionally, our leads, played by Shian Denovan and Matthew C. Vaughan, both bring a lot to the film. Shian especially, a beautiful and talented young actress. (Go Scotland!)

...But I can't condone the rape scenes. I know horror is meant to appeal to the senses, but those scenes are gratuitous. And the less said about Ted's prosthetic the better.

Life is not all funny cat videos
nogodnomasters11 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Ted (Matthew C. Vaughan) puts on a cat costume and appears to be randomly killing people, for reasons that are revealed later, or sooner if you read Amazon's description. Claire (Shian Denovan) is raped and her Internet sensation cat is killed by her rapist. She needs support for the lost of her cat. Here is where she meets Ted.

The film is strangely different. The sound track is off-beat and at times is annoying as in during the dorm killings. Perhaps the theme of the film is that the lost of a pet is a reason for not having one. This film is not for everyone and is on the "concept" side of filming, but not really an art film, just bizarre. Winner of 2015 Best Australian feature, director and actress at A Night of Horror International Film Festival. The film had a few good scenes, some that didn't work, and others that were downright bizarre like the dorm killings and that whole long sequence near the end.

Guide: F-word, sex, rape,, nudity (Danae Swinburne, Shian Denovan)

Didn't love it nor hate it
warriorcat-3212220 November 2021
Disappointed with how awful Megan is Missing was, I decided to give this movie a shot in early 2021. I went into this movie completely blind and needless to say, I was stunned once the credits came on screen. With how grotesque and odd this movie was, I was left speechless. For it being produced with such a low budget, the gore was nicely done along with most of the acting. The sight of actual cats playing in the movie gave a kind of comfort for the few seconds they appeared. It had such a unique story and characters, although there were aspects of the film I could have done without such as the cat pen*s Ted wears along with the random episodes he has throughout. I'm not a huge horror fan so I may just be being picky. The reason I rated this movie so low on the chart is because this is the first movie that made me physically ill, giving me a massive migraine. F it hadn't made me sick however, I would give it a 6 or 7 out of 10. I definitely recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for a bizarre storyline and some gore.

Emphasis on sick
kosmasp4 December 2021
Now there seem to be a couple of short movies - which I have not watched, so can't say or tell you what to make of them. But they all seem to have the main role (baddie) in common. I reckon the theme is similar in them too. You have someone who lost his cat and is ... well "mourning" in a way that is not really good for others. And that is putting it mildly.

There is a lot of sick stuff here, some can be seen other things only heard. Like the sexual attack our main heroine has to endure. Right after something horrible happens to her cat. One of the major issues being that the acting talent is not enough to convince us of much here.

On the other hand, it is not like the script is super tight or the direction would remind one of any great horror movie legend either. Now not everyone can be the best in what they do - or it may also be the lack of money the movie had (or didn't have). There are some interesting concepts and ideas ... but the production values are not helping.

This feels a bit like amateur hour, but it has some bright (violent) spots. Overall disgusting and appalling - which you can see as a badge of honor or as something you are not going to watch for sure. That will be up to you. But it never goes as extreme as other movies have gone (there is one scene in particular where our main bad guy is rewatching a video tape and it seems like was going to do something horrible in the video ... but we cut away or rather he rewinds to a different place/timecode, to watch a different kind of sick moment instead)

If cats have nine lives, this movie just ran out of lives...
paul_haakonsen25 December 2016
From what I read on the synopsis and some of the reviews here on IMDb, then I decided to sit down to watch "Cat Sick Blues", because it did seem like it might actually be odd enough to actually be good.

However, I was wrong. "Cat Sick Blues" fell far outside of what I consider to be a properly entertaining movie, and it was just way too bizarre and slow paced for my liking. And I can't claim to have found any interest in the storyline or the characters portrayed in the movie.

The movie is about a deranged man's urge to kill people and transform himself into a cat in an attempt to bring back his dead cat.

Weird! And it wasn't even enjoyable weird, not in any way. There just wasn't anything worthwhile in watching a nerd in a red shirt and a cat mask wearing an oversized strap-on dildo while killing people. It was just a sad excuse of a movie.

I made it through just about halfway before I just lost the will to go on. And it was either watch something else or start using my mobile phone, so I opted for watching something else, because not even the dialogue in "Cat Sick Blues" proved to be fun or entertaining.

As for the acting in the movie, well I am sure that people were doing adequate jobs, but it just didn't take a hold with me, and I wasn't impressed with what I saw.

With no intention of returning to finish "Cat Sick Blues", then I am rating it a mere two out of ten stars, given the fact that it did have some fair enough production value to it.

If you aren't a huge Horror fan, I don't recommend
sofiavancheri2 March 2021
Personally, I found this movie to be really good. It's not really a horror movie it's more a torture-porn. The acting was cheesy at some points I must admit but the amount of gore and torture was perfect. The only thing I would have to complain about is the acting(of course) but also the ending. When I watched this I thought it was Horror-Fiction not Horror-Fantasy so the ending was quite confusing. Overall, great gore, great torture scenes, bad acting and a very VERY confusing storyline and ending.

One of the worst movies I have ever seen
joevanolo12 September 2020
There is nothing good about this movie, bad acting, terrible script, and so on. Is the type of movie that will left nothing to remember other than the waste of time. Why I watched this movie? Because I met a girl that is the typical "I hate hollywood movies I am special I watch movies that most ppl dont like". I am both those kind of ppl, I love big hollywood movies and I love B movies, but this movie only fits in one place, the bin. Dont waste your time this movie sucks.

An odd little gem
Pawn1211 November 2015
I was one of 142 backers on Kickstarter that helped Dave Jackson and Andrew Gallagher raise $14,500 to make their debut feature film Cat Sick Blues. Every cent of that money is visible on screen.

It's a confident first film. It is well shot and sometimes very creative, experimenting with black-and-white, slow motion, reversed footage, etc. The acting is better than any other low-budget horror film that I have seen in a long time – Matthew Vaughn is very creepy as the 'Catman', and Shian Denovan is solid as the other lead. It should also be mentioned that the music is diverse and incredibly effective. Really, there's was a lot to love about this film.

Admittedly, some of the dialogue felt a little clumsy, and it jumped around a lot tonally. These were just minor quibbles though.

The special effects were really impressive. It's a pretty violent, gory film – lots of severed heads and big barbed cat dildos. This lead to a lot of memorable images – A black-and-white scene featuring a trunk and bizarre catman will stay with me for a while, as well as the excellent hostel massacre.

I also wanted to mention the ending. The plot takes an unnecessary detour in the last 15 minutes, stumbling after a strong run. The idea itself is sound and could have been effective if shortened, but is too overlong to feel worthwhile. Despite this, in its final minutes the film is able to recover and ends on a sad, satisfying note.

I really hope they are able to find a distribution deal for this little gem. If you are able to see it at some point in the future at a festival or after its eventual release, I highly recommend that you do so. You won't regret it. Hell, even if you do regret it, I'm sure you'd agree that Jackson and Gallagher are filmmakers that will be worth keeping an eye on.

Horrible, but suprisingly, I watched until it ended
manuelasaez23 October 2021
This is quite possibly the worst film I've watched in all of 2021. Seriously, this movie is just terrible, but I watched it and I was curious as to how it would end, and when I got to the end I decided that it was even worse than I thought it would be, so let me break it down for you in the easiest way I know how.

Direction- Abysmal. Student film level camera angles, poor composition, terrible transitions and a complete lack of talent in how to frame a convincing scene. It's so bad, I just don't understand how this person is allowed to direct a wedding video, let alone a feature film.

Acting- The lowest point of the film, every single person in this movie was terrible. The lead female was a travesty of the greatest magnitude, but every single person in this movie was untalented, struggled to emote properly while others struggled to remember their lines, and the actual death scenes where rife with the most overacted and hilariously bad performances this side of Sharknado. I am embarrassed for these people. It was a disgrace.

Special effects- I just don't know how anyone could have thought that red paint and water/food coloring makes for convincing blood. It doesn't! No SFX used in this movie looked convincing, and the few that were almost passable were still poorly done. It was like a neighborhood haunted house levels of lame.

Cinematography- The absolute worst part of this steaming pile of garbage. The cinematographer has to be the worst one I have seen in a movie in quite a while. It's like this person had no idea what he/she was doing, and it yielded an ugly movie with bad angles, poor framing, and a sore eye of a film. It was literally and figuratively hideous to watch.

Ultimately, I'm just embarrassed for anyone who thought it was a good idea to attach their names to this. It was horrible, and not in a "so bad it's good" type of way. It was truly, utterly abhorrent in every possible way, and you are better off ignoring it exists. I am not exaggerating in any way. This movie is absolute trash.

People, I know you have friends and family that make these movies and you want to support them, I get that. But telling them that stuff like this is good is not doing a service to them or to the people who ultimately have to watch it. Stop lying to these people and let them know that their work just isn't good. Trust me, it's better for them, and it's really good for the audience as we are spared any more of this sophomoric bile.

Oh, I gave it 3 stars for the music. Some of it reminded me of Silent Hill's soundtrack.

Better than most modern Hollywood Horror Films
BloodyPredator230 October 2021
Cat Sick Blues has a really Interesting and unique Storyline. It shows what a mental trauma can do to humans. Even It is considered as a Horror/Slasher it has also some Drama Elements and some really violent scenes. Overall Cat Sick Blues is a fine Independent Horror Film and in terms of something new and clever its definitely better than most mainstream Hollywood Horror Films. If you have a sense for Horror and Extreme Cinema I can recommend It.

Not for those with a weak stomach
plato-4211930 October 2016
If you are like me and can separate make believe carnage from real life carnage, this movie is a real treat. The protagonist is a lovely female who posts popular cat videos on the internet. She gets in a bit of pickle when she finds love from an unexpected male consort.

Absurdly demented and thoroughly gut wrenching--you have to keep telling yourself it's only ketchup it's only ketchup it's only ketchup.

Both a novel concept and horrendously dark, I give 10 out of 10 dismembered cats on this one. Only for the horror aficionado and those into dark soul-crushing irony.

Bravo, blood-splattered champion, bravo.

Claw blimey!
BA_Harrison7 November 2016
Thanks to social media, I've probably seen almost as many comical cat videos as I have horror films. With Cat Sick Blues, director Dave Jackson merges the funny feline phenomenon with the extreme horror genre to deliver a very gory and uniquely disturbing experience to surprise, disgust and delight fans of truly twisted cinema.

Jackson opens his film with two girls passing time getting high while watching performing pussycat Imelda, the star of their favourite online video channel. Their fun is interrupted, however, by a psycho killer in a rubber cat mask, who decapitates his victims and collects their blood in jars.

The action then moves to the apartment of Claire (Shian Denovan), owner of internet sensation Imelda, who answers her door to a fan; this proves to be a big mistake when the visitor accidentally kills Claire's kitty and then proceeds to rape the distraught woman.

Unable to get over the incident, Claire visits a group for grieving pet owners (as opposed to a rape crisis centre), where she befriends Ted (Matthew C. Vaughan), unaware that he is the cat-mask wearing killer (now with taloned gloves and a foot long prosthetic cat penis as part of his ensemble) who has been hacking off the heads of local women in the belief that their blood will somehow revive the corpse of his beloved moggie Patrick.

With a totally unique killer (in addition to his creepy cat costume, Ted also mewls like a cat to add to the unsettling effect), lots of gore (severed heads, a smashed face and slashed throats that spurt gallons of blood), some sly commentary about all that is wrong with social media, and a general sense of the macabre, Cat Sick Blues is one of those films that has to be seen to be believed and which is hard to forget.

A Real (Kitty) Treat
amirkhaw5 July 2023
First and foremost, Cat Sick Blues is not for everyone and will be far too off-kilter for most casual movie fans. On the flip side, this type of movie is exactly why I, as an avid horror fan, watch hundreds of hours of crap just to find a gem like this one. I hadn't heard of Cat Sick Blues before seeing it and was absolutely blown away by its sheer audacity.

There are literally so many WTF moments, that it's hard to keep up. Best of all, it's quite funny (hitting a similar tone as 2019's Benny Loves You), making it another little demented guilty pleasure. This one is really targeted soley at horror fans, who have already been groomed by this type of creative and bloody mayhem.

There is an underlying social commentary about the pitfalls of social media, for those who like that sort of thing. Ted is also very creepy, as a person and also in his cat suit.

Winner of numerous awards at the A Night of Horror International Film Festival, this partially crowdfunded film may be fairly low budget, but it's also one of the best horror features I have seen of late.

One of my top favorite films from year 2016!!!
drahulrajjsd4 October 2017
It's the 4th of October, and tonight's feature is Cat Sick Blues, which is one of my top favorite films from year 2016. It's a psycho killer cat drama, filled with disturbing, bizarre and splatter scenes, with dark, funny, slow motion and nightmarish sequences, plus an amazing soundtrack that makes you feel very 80s, and really goes very well with flow of this extreme feature. If any one of you who are fans of disturbing and extreme horror have not seen this movie, I highly recommend it to you.

How far would you go to resurrect your deceased fur child?
jythrash15 January 2023
Taking the theme of grief to an extremely twisted black humoresque level, Cat Sick Blues is definitely one of the best indie horror films I've seen.

The kills were satisfying, gore was great, make up and special effects were also fantastic. The shots and cinematography were very well composed and is accompanied by the clever usage and choice of music for all the scenes alongside the neat bass synth driven score. A good example would be the slow-motion hostel room scene (reminded me of that slow-mo scene in Clockwork Orange) with that chill laid back song and the frenetic song used in the opening credits scene - I already know that this is gonna be a very crazy fun ride!

The performers did a great job, our main guy Matthew C. Vaughan who plays Ted is an excellent choice for this role as his tall stature gave him a bogeyman, or shall I say bogey 'cat' man vibe. His portrayal of a person suffering from a mental breakdown was pretty convincing, sometimes it may leave the viewers wondering if he's just a maniacal pervert or is he just a victim of his circumstances. Nonetheless, as a cat dad myself I can't help but empathise with him towards the end of the film. There were some pretty over the top and at times hilarious moments, it's not for everyone but it just added to the fun for me.

I could definitely tell that a lot of effort was put into this film and all the little details were extremely well scrutinised by the crew. Even though it's an indie film, it surpassed some of the bigger studio modern horror films out there in terms of quality and heart and I am truly glad to have finally seen it!
