Prey

No typo there, both works in a way. This is run of the mill sort of. There are obstacles and drama, but you know where this is going and I wouldn't fault the actors too much, not because I think they are great, but just because the core material does not give them much to play around with. Again the story is very simple and easy to follow.

You may like that or you may be annoyed by it. Whatever the case, this is not rough around the edges even if it gets violent from time to time and a bit "dangerous". So a TV movie of the week and it knows what it is. Also there have been worse movies than this particular one. Also nice to see some of the actors like Jane Seymour. Other than that, just don't expect much

Often Spins Into Ridiculous Plot Elements
larrys318 July 2017
Set in Central Valley, California, this film often plays like a Made- for-TV or B-movie. Annabelle Stephenson stars here, as Emma, a NYC writer for a fashion magazine, who is returning to her hometown of Bella Canejo, Ca., for her father's funeral.

Soon however, she'll be switching hats from fashion reporter to investigative sleuth, as she tries to get to the bottom of a large conspiracy involving the cutting off of desperately needed water to the local farmers by those who want to force them out and buy their land for pennies on the dollar.

Some of the decisions by the intrepid Emma had me shaking my head in disbelief as they became more and more ridiculous as the movie progressed. There was enough here though to keep me interested and want to know how it would all turn out, and it does have some twists near the end and a poignant finale.

Reading the review of critic Roger Moore, on Rotten Tomatoes outlining where the production of this film was coming from raised a lot of red flags for me, so buyer beware.

Back to the roots is all this is about with a slightly disappointing environmental plot

Warning: Spoilers
"Pray for Rain" is an American 90-minute movie that is still very new and fresh as it is a release from this year (2017). the director is French filmmaker Alex Ranarivelo, while the script is by prolific actress Christina Moore, her second writing credit according to IMDb. If you take a look at the film's poster, you may think that this film focuses on Jane Seymour, a former Bond girl and in my opinion actually the most attractive Bond girl of all times, and even in her mid-60s today she still looks really stunning. And she is also first credit here, but in the center of it all is the character played by Annabelle Stephenson, a young lawyer who returns to her home town and finds out about the consequences that lack of water in that area has caused for humans and also greedy corporations. And with the character's legal background that adds a completely new dimension to it. Death and violence also are a consequence to an extent eventually where you wonder if this is really something that could happen in today's America. The answer you will need to find for yourself. I personally would say that yes it is a bit generic in terms of the exact drama and the plot with the investigative actions by the central character in terms of finding out about corruption and what is really happening to the water is a bit shoddy and the parallel between farmers who need the money and a specific fish colony who does is mediocre to say the least. But the film is solid in terms of guessing what may happen next and I found myself actually fairly curious about that. The biggest strength of the movie is probably the "back to the roots" aspect because the way the protagonist takes a journey into her own past again was nicely done in my opinion. Plus Stephenson is not just incredibly easy on the eye, but also gives a performance that would not only have deserved first credit, but also her being included on the poster, even if she may not have a big name like Seymour. And that comes from a Jane Seymout fan as you can see from my comments early on. As a whole, it's not a groundbreaking film or anything you'd consider top5 of the year, but a pretty decent way to spend 1.5 hours. I recommend checking it out.

Insulting
Imdb_rok16 June 2018
I think it's rather insulting for movie lovers and Netflix subscribers to release this and call it a "movie". The acting was so bad. The actors we're trying to act like acting. So bad it almost made me laugh. Oh and those awful terrible plastic soundeffects, man. It just left me wandering how this is possible to be released. Skipped it through and then turned it off.

Couldn't watch it all

I'm sorry but this is drivel. It is worse than a high school production of the Lone Ranger - make that Middle School production. Characters are unbelievable and the story line beggars belief.

Who wastes money making these things when there are much better uses for it?

The Movie that Killed John Heard
d.rust6 October 2017
After running after Kevin McCallister for decades, John Heard died shortly after this movie opened. Cause of death was extreme shame. Rest in Peace, John.

As for the "star" of this movie, it ain't Jane Seymour. Word is that she needed some cash for her luxury one-bedroom, one-bathroom condo in East L.A. so the producers fronted her the money. She repaid them with a dead-eyed performance as a throw-away mother that sits around berating her successful daughter.

Yeah, the daughter. She starts out the movie at a red carpet event in Hollyweird where she is obligated by the script to answer a phonecall from "Mom" with a "WHAT!?" as though she has some kind of "loving" arrangement with her crack-whore mother. And then, the boo-hoo moment: she says "wha-a-at?" (WHAT DIALOGUE!). Turns out that her commie daddy, struggling during Californica's worst drought to cultivate apples that are killing the population by sucking all the water out of the ground, is dead. He's been stung by a sentient tractor and had his brains sucked out. Actually not, but you're kind of hoping for a good plot twist.

So it turns out the Jets and Sharks are going around raping women and stealing water. The sheriff has had to arrest people who are going to jail for having drunk water in public. Or something like that. Sounds like a deal! You go to jail and you won't die from thirst.

More plot complications throw Emma (the daughter) on a dirt bike ("WEAR A HELMET!"-- "screw you, 'Mom'!") Yeah, she eventually has to wear a full helmet so they can use a stunt person. She judo-chops a guy, steals his car, steals his ID. Cripes what a total #LUSER he is.

Yeah, a couple of plot twists later, Kevin's dad gets his just desserts (and it Ain't apple pie). The aliens turn out to be disguised as SMELTS. And the whole movie crumbles from there on. 0 out of 10, IMDb doesn't allow a nil vote.

Oh, truth be told, the only aliens in this movie are the illegal kind. But they're the *nice* illegal kind, all Asian-y and products of war in far-off lands. Christ on a Mr Christie's cracker, this is a CHEESY piece of crap.

What a ridiculous premise
williamrmckern5 January 2019
An implausible plot financed by the Lucas Oil family to needlessly slag environmentalists and government officials. We're supposed to believe that California's water crisis isn't caused by fossil-fuel enabled climate change, over development, or poor planning and strategy with respect to water consumption. Nope, it's caused by evil environmentalists and lazy public employees.

On the plus side, Jane Seymour still looks good and she gives a credible performance. Much of the rest of the cast also does good work. But that doesn't take away from the fact that this film is pure disinformation.

Worth the watch
asobocinski-958-28452020 August 2022
This is not a Denzel Washington movie. It is an engaging drama. The beginning was a little flat and familiar, but I enjoyed the plot twists. I did not see it as having any political message, but I can see how people with that predisposition may think it does.

Warning: Spoilers
I can not remember a film when I was so aware of the actors acting everything was so stilted, I say acting I have wooden furniture which can show a greater range of emotions than the leading actress. Netflix must be hoovering up content because this is a made for afternoon TV. There are more plot holes than Swiss cheese at one point when she enters the environmentalists office a woman thanks her for saving her, I will be honest it hardly kept my full attention but I could not recall the scene, I take it, it ended up on the editors floor where the rest of this film should have ended up. There was so much to dislike in the film but what was going on with the colour? watching it you discover what being colour blind feels like, everything seems dulled down. So it was funded by a corporation which wanted to present plucky chiselled chinned farmers against evil environmentalists. So gangs of blokes are allowed to burn, kill, threaten rape, use intimidation to force money or sell up and the local sheriff never thinks I need help to the lightbulb moment and he calls the FBI. At the end the reporter working in a vibrant job in New York gives up to live in a dust bowl. Dross is being kind and so is 1 star.

Dreadful.
paulmurphy-2523110 January 2024
It's a propaganda piece funded by a group that works to weaken animal welfare legislation around the US.

It's an appalling objective in my view and I suspect the views of many.

Also, the views of many I suspect is that this is a piece of crap.

Poor Jane Seymour.

Sure things are tough Jane but surely they aren't as tough as needing money so bad as to appear in this stinker.

I do hope none of your friend and family see it - or anyone in the industry thinking of hiring you.

It won't land well.

The movie is straight out propanganda and it shows - wooden acting, bad melodrama.

Drivel, rubbish - avoid at all costs.

Undervalued solid movie
KathleenK2226 August 2017
Jane Seymour is worth a few stars for a start. I loved seeing the beautiful Jane Seymour as an older lady, still beautiful and a wonderful actor. The main star is an Aussie although born in England she migrated to Australia as an infant. She is also a solid actor. The male star is also a decent actor. He plays the local sheriff who seems to have no backup but does he? A credible performance from him as well! Was the script original or riveting? Maybe not but it told a story and was not predictable at every stage. I did not want to turn it off or walk away so some reviews are lacking credibility. The themes are timeless but still need to be shown again and again, Relationships and misunderstandings happen all the time but in this case they are fixable. Values such as the land and people's livelihoods and lives are worth preserving. Intimidating the little people has consequences as food must be grown and people must be fed. It could be an afternoon movie to while away the time which may surprise those who take a chance and watch this underrated movie.

Propaganda
wunsam30 August 2017
I am supposed to believe that the Californian water crisis has nothing to do with those farmers growing water guzzling alien crops such as cotton, alfalfa or almonds in a dry hot climate. Nope, it is the fault of the environmentalists. Looks like those tough, hard working, common sense farmers are as detached from the land as the City dwellers. After 10 minutes I had to stop watching this nonsense.

Dishonest context on the Delta Smelt and drought causes
AJ4F4 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Hollywood is often accused of being too "pro environment" but this film took the opposite turn, telling major lies about the root causes of drought in overpopulated California, including a scene where someone claims the Delta Smelt is more plentiful (it's actually facing extinction) and they only want a small percentage of the water held back for it.

The bigger picture is that the Smelt is an indicator species for overall delta water health. not just "some fish," and California has long been a semi-desert where crops should not be grown in many places. As the human population gets bigger, things just worsen (basic math). Framing environmental protection for fish as an evil cover for developers is a mindless plot device.

The decent looking lead actress is the main thing worth watching here.

Horror not horror, drama not drama

Things in the story just lame. It's not scary or strong story line, as well as the acting of those actors... none bring up my interest.

Perfect Example
ronmcreynolds25 August 2022
This is a perfect example of how low the standard of movie making have become and how high the insults to movie viewers have risen. This is not only a boring and predictable plot, but the acting is too. Then there's the writing skill or lack of it. No need for cgi or green screens. All you need to see are empty brown fields that show the bias present in this OC movie.

Skip this one star waste using a past has-been actress or future wannabees. Go watch a real movie even if you have to rent it. I suggest it be the opposite and be rich in content and quality. A good example would be Ben Hur with Charleston Heston, Logan's Run, or In Harm's Way with John Wayne.

Really good, worth your time.
erik_didden17 June 2017
This movie touched me and this is what has to happen with a drama movie.

Strong characters, well played, i have no idea what movie the guy above me watched but this was absolutely a good movie.

It was even so good that i had to make a account here just to leave this review to tell you all to watch it when you have the chance.

You wont regret it, the score is definitely to low.

Action movie with intrigue and interest.
mybeck-9090811 January 2022
This movie remined me very much of the Pelican Brief and I found it compelling and entertaining. I was cheering for the heroine the entire time hoping and praying she would discover the truth and that others would believe her and that the evil forces would be overcome. Some actions she took were very gutsy and I wouldn't do them, but the results led to the positive outcomes. Even though there was some violence that could have gotten much worse, I am glad it didn't -- extra points for being family friendly!
