Chinese director Wei Shujun has just premiered his third film, neo-noir thriller Only The River Flows, in Cannes Un Certain Regard to positive reviews.
While he’s now had three features selected for the festival, this is the first time he’s been able to walk the red carpet in person, at least with a full-length film.
His debut, semi-autobiographical drama Striding Into The Wind, was selected in 2020, the year that Cannes didn’t take place but still presented an Official Selection. His sophomore work, Ripples Of Life, premiered in Directors Fortnight in 2021, but he was unable to fly to Cannes due to Covid travel restrictions.
However, he’s been to Cannes in person before, with his 2018 short film On the Border, which won a Special Jury Award. He says that watching the Dardenne Brothers’ Palme d’Or winner Rosetta in 2016 (a few decades after it was made in 1999) was...

Los Angeles’ turbulent year of mass Covid-19 closures, racial unrest and exacerbated homelessness has led to a somewhat predictable stream of media coverage tied to the notion that the California dream is ending.
If you lived for any length of time in the city, you’ve heard the pessimistic outlook all before, only to see the city recover.
That’s why Ron Brownstein’s new book Rock Me on the Water is a bit of a refresher that the City of Angels has had its very, very good moments, in particular the year 1974 — a time when Los Angeles’ creative energies in TV, music, movies and politics were all their high points. Those sectors of the culture certainly went through periods of renaissance before and since then, but this was a year when all was happening at once. New York, by contrast, was in a state of crisis, not that there...

Relaxed yet armed with a steely ambition, up-and-coming Chinese helmer Wei Shujun is thrilled to be back at Cannes this year in the First Feature section with his road trip film “Striding Into the Wind,” after his short “On the Border” won the Special Jury Distinction award in 2018.
“Cannes has been my school, my teacher,” he told Variety, saying that he’s carefully watched and studied the festival’s selections from the past four years..
“I wouldn’t make a film just for a festival’s recognition, but this year it feels like I’m submitting my work to my teacher and asking, ‘Ok, take a look, did I answer it correctly or not? Is this heading in the right direction?’ ” he laughs.
The film, whose international rights have already been nabbed by Films Boutique, is about 30% based on his own experiences from a period in his early 20s when...

Films Boutique has acquired international rights to Chinese filmmaker Wei Shujun’s “Striding Into the Wind,” which is part of Cannes’ 2020 Official Selection. The film marks the first arthouse feature completely funded by Chinese conglomerate Alibaba Pictures.
“Striding Into the Wind” is the feature debut of Wei Shujun, an up-and-coming Chinese filmmaker who received the Special Jury award at Cannes with his short film “On the Border” in 2018.
“Striding Into the Wind” tells the story of Kun, a young man who seems to be messing up pretty much everything: his senior year at film school, his work on his friend’s graduation film and his relationship with his girlfriend. This drama blends road-movie elements set against the backdrop of China’s diverse landscapes, as well as comedy.
“‘Striding Into the Wind’ is clearly the discovery of a very promising filmmaker dealing with a tone and topics that we have not...

For cinematographer Lawrence Sher, the focus has always been on the director. That philosophy has carried Sher’s imagery to millions of filmgoers, including his latest work set to hit screens this year: “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” directed by Michael Dougherty, and “Joker,” directed by Todd Phillips, who has also collaborated with Sher on all three “Hangover” films. “Whatever success I’ve achieved comes from the fact that I care as deeply about the movie as the director does,” says Sher. “My No. 1 job is to take some of the burden and stress off of their shoulders, and I do that with thorough preparation.”
Sher took an unusual route. An economics major at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, he bypassed film school, moved to Los Angeles and started out as a camera assistant on commercials and music videos. He took any opportunity to shoot, took thousands of stills using motion picture stocks,...
