Mean Girls (2024)
3/10
This version should stick to Broadway only!
3 April 2024
The only reason I gave this a 3 was purely for the acting talent of Renee Rapp, Auli'i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, Angourie Rice and Bebe Wood. The movie missed the mark with the musical numbers and there was no character development whatsoever. I almost switched the movie off after 10 minutes but persevered because I paid $5.95 for it. It's hard to believe that Tina Fey wrote this version of "Mean Girls" because it was so terrible. The original movie was thought provoking, funny and each performance was fantastic. The worst character was Karen Shetty; the original Karen was actually funny but this version was otp. Avantika did her best with the crap writing she was given to work with. I hope she gets a better movie to further showcase her talent. The romance between Cady and Aaron wasn't believable because they didn't get enough screen time. Who was robbed of screen time was Jaquel Spivey as Damian! I couldn't care less about Janis because her character was written terribly. Lizzy Caplan's version was the best because she had humour and heart. I think Renee and Angourie are so talented and hope we see more of them in the future.

If you're curious about this version of movie; I recommend watching it once because then you'll appreciate the original 2004 version more!!

Barbie (I) (2023)

Fun and not overly complicated
22 July 2023
I know there's been concern that the movie will be overly feminist because it was written by Greta Grewig. This movie manages to capture the right amount of feminism without taking itself so seriously. The standout performance is Ryan Gosling as Ken; I think he carried his role with the perfect amount of Kenergy. Margot Robbie is delightful as Barbie and gives her much heart.

I think the movie would've worked better as a tv series to allow the writers to flesh out the characters a bit more. It would've been better if we understood more of what created the distance between Gloria and her daughter (See? I can't even remember her name). When did Barbie first start feeling that she wanted more than the same existence everyday. Why weren't the Barbies and Kens capable of understanding more than their world? Didn't their characters encompass their human counterparts?

Anyway....the movie was fun, lighthearted and something for everyone to enjoy.

Neither good or evil
20 October 2022
I didn't know much about the movie prior to seeing it but I thought it must be good given some of it's core cast - Kerry Washington, Charlize Theron, Michelle Yeoh and Laurence Fishburne. The premise for this movie isn't anything new but it had potential to be more than what ended up being the finishing product. Sophia Anne Caruso does a great job as Sophie and was convincing as both good and evil. Unfortunately Sofia Wylie was miscast as Agatha and it was hard to get behind the character when her emotional range was nonexistent. Charlize, Michelle and Laurence's characters were completely underused and Kerry's character was just annoying. There was something lacking in the story given it's long running time; I was waiting for something more to happen and then it ended. I think watching this once was enough for me...

its watchable....
29 January 2005
When I heard they were making a sequel to Ocean's 11, I was a bit skeptical and after watching the movie last night, I had every reason to be! While the first movie was all about class and had plenty of twists, this movie was very jumbled and the overall result makes you wonder why they bothered doing the movie at all.

In the first movie, i enjoyed the focus being on the plot and only occasionally did they indulge into the characters' backgrounds. However in this movie you just learned too much about them and nothing about the heist. One person I found really annoying in this movie was Catherine Zeta-Jones, her character was annoying and i didn't see any chemistry between herself and Brad Pitt (Rusty).

There's not much to say other than its probably something to watch on DVD if even that...

An insult to Austen and intelligence!
16 January 2005
After watching and enjoying "Bend It Like Beckham", I was really looking forward to Gurinder Chadha's new film "Bride and Prejudice". However ten minutes into the movie I just could not believe that the same woman actually helped create this terrible, terrible movie!! It attempts to re-tell "Pride and Prejudice" with a Bollywood twist, however I think all Jane Austen and Bollywood movie fans would just be insulted by this garbage.

Aishwarya Rai plays Lalitha Bhakshi(the equivalent to Elizabeth Bennett) and she proved to me that she can't act in 2 different languages. The character was lame and did not develop at all. Martin Henderson plays Will Darcy (the equivalent to Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy) he does a good job, its just a shame he had to act opposite to Rai. The only other 2 actors I liked were Anupam Kher (Mr Bhakshi/Mr Bennett) and Alexis Bledel (Georgie/Georgianna) who weren't used as much as they should have been.

The songs were ridiculous and the voice over for Aishwarya Rai throughout her songs was terrible, I really hope Gurinder re-thinks making a movie like this ever again or for that matter casting Rai.

1/10 (the one is giving credit to Martin Henderson, Anupam Kher and Alexis Bledel)

a simply lovely sequel
4 December 2004
Warning: Spoilers
*possible spoilers of movie and book*

For anyone who's read the book, you realize that they've either cut some of the story lines or changed them. However I was happy with the overall result of the movie, Renee Zellweger does a fantastic job reprising herself as 30 something Bridget Jones. Except this time we see Bridget with the man of her dreams Mark Darcy (played to perfection by Colin Firth) and not really sure what to do with her happy ending. We watch the Bridget's journey in figuring out what to do about her own insecurities about life and love, there are some recycled material from the 1st movie but nonetheless I thought it was just great to watch.

I do wish they had included the storyline of Jude getting married because I thought that was really funny or Uncle Geoffrey's secret life. Even though Rebecca turned out to be a lesbian in the movie, it would have been great if her character had remained true to the book because it really showed the strength of Mark's love for Bridget. It would have also been great if the storyline involving Gary was in there as well, he would have been a great laugh.

Anyway I give the movie 7/10 it was v.v.good

good but not great
18 November 2004
Warning: Spoilers
possible spoilers...

I was looking forward to seeing this movie based on the reviews I had heard about it but also from the trailer. However upon watching it I have to say its a good movie but the not the best Tom Cruise movie I've seen. Cruise plays Vincent, a professional killer who picks Max (Jamie Foxx) to drive him to each of his targets unwillingly. Its an interesting storyline to say the least which ties up neatly in the end however I found that it just didn't do what Cruise's "Minority Report" did in terms of mystery. I felt sorry for Mark Ruffalo who had a useless role as an undercover cop who is trying to figure out the deal with Vincent himself, his character didn't develop enough and was taken away pretty fast. Jada Pinkett-Smith did a good job in the movie, its good to see her stray away from the tough female roles that she usually plays. I thought it was wrong to shoot this movie using digital camera-work because it looked really bad and made the camera work look really amateur.

I gave this movie a 6/10, again its good but not great.

sweet, romantic and funny
9 September 2004
I know that this is a female version of "Big" but I'm still glad it was done because this movie had a more romantic feel to it. Christa B. Allen plays a 13 yr old Jenna Rink who wishes that she could be a sassy 30 year old. After a mean prank is played on her at her 13th birthday party, her wish comes true and then enters Jennifer Garner, a beautiful/grown up Jenna Rink. Jenna enjoys the glitz and glamour her future self but slowly realises that there's a downside to it all. Mark Ruffalo plays her grown up best friend Matt Flamahaff who Jenna deserted in high school for the more popular group. He finds himself struggling to believe her about a teenager trapped in a older body and rekindling his feelings for her.

This movie is lovely for all the romantics out there, I give it a 7/10

i loved it!
17 August 2004
I initially saw a little clip of this movie on an Australian talk show and thought the special effects looked really lame so I thought I'd give it a miss. Luckily this was the only movie running at the only time I had to see one, and overall I really loved it!! Will Smith plays Detective Spooner, a guy who's past affects his judgement about the present and the future, in particular robots. When a scientist appears to have committed suicide, he begins to uncover something more serious going on with the robots and the ppl around him. Bridget Moynahan plays Dr Susan Calvin, a psychiatrist who hides behind big words and robots to prevent her emotions being let out. Once Susan meets Det Spooner, she's not intrigued by him but the mystery in general. I loved the robot Sonny, if only we could really only someone like him :)

I give this movie an 8/10 and recommend this to any sci-fi fans out there

something interesting to watch
10 August 2004
All I ever have read about this movie are bad reviews but after viewing it today I completely disagree with those reviews. This movie tells the story about the stereotypes that both men and women fall under and whether or not we can or really want to escape from them. Nicole Kidman does a fantastic job as Joanna Eberhart, a high strung business woman who gets fired from her job and suffers from a nervous breakdown. Matthew Broderick plays Walter Kresby, her supportive yet worn out husband who yearns to get away from the big smoke. Along with their two kids they move to Stepford, a perfect town that becomes a bit too creepy from the first moment they move in. Bette Midler and Roger Bart are hilarious as Bobbie Markovitz & Roger Bannister. If I ever moved into a creepy town like that, they would be the two characters I would love to have as friends.

This movie is fun to watch and I give it a 7/10!

(Although I think Nicole Kidman could do with a bit more food!)

fantastic sequel!
12 July 2004
There's always one thing I fear when it comes to movies and that is sequels! I knew there was a lot of hype surrounding this movie so I tried to ignore it and go into the movies with no expectations. This movie actually blew me away by its content, it didn't focus on some "I hate everyone, I'm evil and I want to kill the world" storyline. Instead it focused on how heroes are within us all (as Aunt May said), how technology has consumed us and how its important to sustain love no matter how difficult the circumstances.

Peter Parker (Maguire) is still fighting crime but he's also trying to fight his guilt over his Uncle Ben's death, his true feelings for Mary Jane (Dunst) and the truth about his identity to Harry (James Franco).

I think its a movie people would really enjoy, I have it an 8/10

Miss Match (2003)
cute and funny!
9 July 2004
I cannot believe that the ABC cancelled this show because I think its fantastic, the whole cast give such a great performance and I love the concept of the lawyer/match maker. Who could not fall in love with the story of Kate and Michael?! I was really surprised when I heard that the show was put on hiatus after 11 episodes because seriously there are some U.S shows which should have been put on permanent hiatus a long, long time ago (hint..charmed). If the ABC had any kind of entertainment sense and value they would re-instate the show.

Alicia Silverstone does a really good job in this show ans I love the chemistry she had with David Conrad

surprisingly good
9 July 2004
I came on the IMDB to see what people had given this movie and I must say it seemed to have got a lukewarm review. However, I decided to give the movie a go and I actually was surprised by how nice it was. I mean yeah its all been done before but I think its one of the few teen movies that I can tolerate these days.

Mandy Moore does a great job as Anna Foster, the president's daughter, who yearns for a normal life and freedom that she hasn't been able to have. On a trip to Prague she realises that her father has broken his promise to relieve her of the heavy security entourage that follows her every where she goes. From there she embarks on a journey with a stranger called Ben Calder who has a secret of his own but yet finds himself compelled to go along with Anna.

I thought this movie worked well and I'm glad to see that Mandy Moore is spreading her wings in the entertainment industry and that she's completely respectable in contrast to Britney Spears!

interesting yet uninteresting
9 July 2004
I heard a lot of good reviews about this movie and off course I didn't expect it to be a perky sort of movie but after watching it, it wasn't something that I'd rave on and on about. This movie is about Tracey Freeland, a 13 year old who's problems are bottled up inside of her and come out through drugs, sex and violence. Its a sad story about a mother and daughter's downfall and their struggle to live life 'normally'. I was impressed by Evan Rachel Wood and Holly Hunter's performances, you really believed that they were a family.

The only problem I have with this movie is that although its trying to make a realistic point of view, I don't know whether it would work on actual teenagers. Because I know that if I watched that movie at 13, it really wouldn't impact on me at all and I would think it was another movie that just portrayed teenagers as a problem.

Its probably a movie that you could watch once but that's about it.

I'd give it a 6 out of 10

makes you think...
3 July 2004
This movie takes you back to your own high school experience where you can actually remember what group you were in and whether or not you had "the plastics" in your grade. I can say for sure, I had them in my grade!

This story revolves around the experience of Cady who has just moved back to America after living in Africa with her parents for most of her life. When she does enter high school, she is faced with numerous choices, whether to fit in or to remain true to herself. So you can just imagine the road that she's going to take but rather than this being a typical teen movie, it actually makes you feel for a lot of the characters. Also it makes you wonder about the choices you made or are making as a teenager.

I say ppl should take a look at this movie and see what they think for themselves

When Mary Donaldson and Prince Friedrick got married, I think everyone started to believe in fairytales not too mention it really made people want to watch this movie. The movie introduces Julia Stiles who plays Paige and Luke Mably who is Prince Edvard and the different lives that they lead. However when they do intersect it creates a beautiful romance that you can't help but be involved in.

I think the only flaw that the movie has is that it seemed that the writers didn't really know how to end it so it kind of feels abrupt. However I don't think it's too much of a problem that would effect the beauty of this movie.

not that bad...
3 July 2004
After reading a lot of the reviews on this board, I thought this movie was going to be really bad however I found that this movie isn't really as terrible as some people have made it out to be. Jessica Alba plays Honey Danies, a hip-hop dance teacher hoping to make it as a choreographer, for someone who didn't have any previous dance experience, she sure does a fantastic job! Mekhi Pfifer is good in his supporting role as the barber with a lot of heart.

This movie is something that has been done many times before so you can't expect an oscar nominated screenplay etc etc. However, its something you can enjoy and if you are into the music or dancing, then this is definitely something for you

fantastic!
3 July 2004
I was surely NOT disappointed when I saw this movie, I thought that the change of director was the best thing that happened to this series. He didn't rely on too many special effects to create such a wonderful adaptation of J.K Rowling's third novel. It's great to see Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson & Rupert Grint have really grown into their roles and I think we can expect even more greater things as each novel is made in the future.

The only flaws that I can note is some of the important details from the book that they left out in the movie, I think they could have made it even more fantastic than it already is.

Other than that, I'm looking forward to the next installment and the sixth novel!

moving
3 July 2004
Ever since I heard about the plot of this movie, I really wanted to see it and it did not disappoint. "Beyond Borders" is about the extent of passion that can lead you to take the most incredible chances with life for the good and the bad. Angelina Jolie and Clive Owen do a brilliant job in their roles as Sarah and Nick, they make you believe that they are those characters for real!

I think what makes it more moving is the fact that Angelina Jolie really is a ambassador and actually makes the attempt to help out the many people in need.

I don't understand why this movie was slammed so much but in my opinion I don't even think they were really watching it.

Please watch this movie!

Warning: Spoilers
*possible spoilers ahead*

The moment I finished watching volume one I couldn't wait to see what the next installment was and I was pleasantly surprised with the result. If anyone expects the pace and gore of the first installment, they are very much mistaken! This movie focuses on the bride's revenge against Sidewinder, California Mountain Snake and finally Bill. Uma Thurman proves her range as an actress by showing the struggle of her character's emotional stability. You finally understand why the Deadly Viper Squad were out to destroy the Bride and funnily enough you actually find the character of Bill likeable. My only question is what happened to O-Ren Ishii's friend?

Other than that the movie is really great, this is by far Tarantino's best work

12 April 2004
There's not terribly much to say about the movie other than we've seen this kind of formula before. However Kate Bosworth, Topher Grace and Ginnifer Goodwin do a great job playing Rosalee, Pete and Cathy, the guy who played Tad was ok but I found his lacklustre acting a let down for the movie.

I don't understand why critics are giving Robert Luketic a hard time for directing this movie, what can he do other than set the direction and convey to the best of his ability a storyline that SOMEONE else wrote? They also keep comparing the movie to "Legally Blonde" which I don't understand why because the only concept that they share is that Reese Witherspoon and Kate Bosworth are blonde

Any I thought it was a nice movie 6/10

Adorable!
26 March 2004
The moment I heard that Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler were teaming up again for another romantic comedy, I knew that I wanted to see it. "50 First Dates" did live up to my expectations with everyone doing a great acting job in it. Barrymore and Sander still exhibit the same on-screen chemistry as they did in "The Wedding Singer". I also love seeing the familiar faces from most of Sandler's previous movies appear in this film, someone who stands out to me is Sean Astin, what a turn around from playing Samwise Gamgee!

It's a definite must see for all the romantics out there, I give the movie a 7/10!

Mona Lisa Frown
23 February 2004
Warning: Spoilers
*possible spoilers ahead*

This movie looked so promising from the theatrical trailer but after seeing it I must say the trailer was better than the movie altogether! What could have been a movie about women escaping the rules of society put upon them, it turned out to be well about absolutely nothing. Julia Roberts plays Katherine Watson, a woman who's suppose to be an inspiration to the other Wellesey girls but instead ends up sulking the entire time without gaining any kind of wisdom from her year at Wellesey College. Then you've got Kirsten Dunst who plays Betty Warren, a girl brought up believing that women should uphold the traditions that have been placed upon them for years and years. She spends the entire movie treating the others like garbage but off course you know how her character is going to end up in the end. Julia Stiles plays Joan Brandwyn, who probably ended up being one of the only characters besides Ginnifer Goodwin who played Connie Baker that ended up being happy and not so annoying. Maggie Gyllenhaal plays Giselle Levy who's pretty much a lost soul and still pretty much remains that way in the end.

I can't even go on about this movie it's just bad bad bad!

a good effort though a little lost
18 February 2004
I must say that I hadn't heard of this movie before the golden globe awards so I thought I would go and see it and see what the buzz was all about. Firstly I must say this was a really good effort by Sophia Coppola considering her pitiful performance in the last godfather movie (I'm sorry folks that is still unforgivable). The movie has a good cast with Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson giving stellar performances with the city of Tokyo epitomising the crisis that both characters are facing. Though they do touch on a romantic sort of bond but more than romantic its a connection of two souls that know that this one week together can perhaps change the course of their lives forever or they weather out the problems that they have for good. I guess it's the ending that brings the rating to 6/10, I guess because it confused me, hopefully I'll get it one day but I still think its a good movie.

how did cruise not get an ocscar nomination!
18 February 2004
This movie exceeded my expectations, I don't understand why this movie was overlooked by the academy awards panel, were they not watching? Tom Cruise plays Nathan Algren, a man who's torn between the past and what lies ahead in the future. At first he doesn't understand the ways of the samurai but when he is held "captive" he begins to understand a new way of life and honour. Ken Watanbe plays Katsumoro, a powerful samurai intrigued by the conflict that Nathan has and perhaps the warrior connection between them.

This is a movie not to be missed!!
