disappointment from the great coens
7 August 2003
i just want to quickly say that i rate movies fairly, no matter when they are made, who directed them or who's acting in them, but purely weather i was interested or not. even if bogart himself would've played the lead in this one, i would've given it the same little below average rating. there's no magic. when your movie is missing the magic, especially a film of this particular genre, it's worthless. biggest upsets of the film were that there's no good music or good camerawork with the lighting and the narrator is not witty, but infact just like the title says, uninteresting.

great cast - one boring movie
5 August 2003
as a johnny depp fan i check out all his films. this one also featured other interesting actors. johnny depp though was sadly as badly out of it as he was in jack the ripper. you can always tell from his acting when a movie's not really sparking what he excpected inside him. john turturro does the best work in his role. infact, the parts with turturro are the only (mediocry) interesting parts in this film. the man who cried is a sleeping pill that works better than any pharmaseutical equivalent. much is already said about the plot, or the lack of it so i'll spare my hands and leave it at that. this movie is just, simply put, a complete failure.

it's interesting that many choose to ignore the absolutely horrifying acting
25 July 2003
i don't have time to go deeper into this movie now, i was just amazed how only a few reviewers seemed to pay attention to the lousy acting. even clint himself is guilty to it.

a good movie, but the acting really took some of it away for me.

The Jack Bull (1999 TV Movie)
5/10
i can see it's a good story, but the melodramatic cliche-filled execution drops this down to The Average Street
22 July 2003
when you can see the actors participating as producers it usually means they wanted to make a movie no-one else did. after viewing this film i can conclude 'the jack bull' makes no exception to the rule. john badham is not a miracle maker, more a box-office director. this kind of a story would have needed something more, as this was obviously supposed to be a serious, credible film.

the problem is simply direction. i know i shouldn't land it all on one guy, but just look at it! the goody good boy, the amazing wife, ordinary man, justified revenge...blah blah. the air shots from the ride to cheyenne with the cheesy music and background dialogue, the endless verbal attacks on billy but not on ollie shows the pathetic situation of american 'political correctness' a.k.a. neo-racism, and it's all filled with dramatic death scenes, at some points it's just a tiresome watch.

so, every other scene is pretty much crap, but every other scene is not. regardless of the movies problems i did enjoy it, john cusack looks like a new yorker to me, but he is a good actor and he can somewhat pull it off anyway. the supporting cast is good all-around. i like the way the cities are portrayed as cold, dark and primitive places unlike in most westerns. the ending is good, although again too melodramatic. john goodman's character is useless, i didn't need to see mister righteous there to make me feel a little better. i just felt sick as i saw another cliche-bomb walking the streets of rawlins.

it's worth a watch, no, infact it's okay, if you can just ignore the things i loathed. but it's not even close to the best westerns of the 1990's. plusses for acting and camera-work.

there's a difference in ripping off and paying homage
22 July 2003
young poisoner's handbook clearly shows where it's stylish inspiration came from, i find it hilarious that certain reviewers can be so daft they are bashing this movie as a clockwork orange rip-off, the director wants us to know his inspirations, get it?

furthermore, this is not a bad movie at all. the witty and funny yet insane atmosphere creates an enjoyable adult's fairytale. HOWEVER, remember this is not a fairytale. as far as info about young tells me he was a sick sick man who was fascinated with nazi's chemical methods and also used them.

the world is full of evil murderers who have hands that are smooth as a baby's bottom.

Brother (I) (2000)
3/10
no real content, no deeper meaning
27 June 2003
unlike the great hana-bi where kitano managed to keep his gun in his pants for a while and concentrated on the story instead, brother once again falls back to the mediocre violence often seen in his movies. the yakuza blasts away everything that moves. yeah, yeah. zzzzz...

the actors are quite bad, both japanese and american. omar epps is okay, and terajima as kato does a nice little role.

in short, it is just violence, blood and guts, there is no deeper meaning to it, it's not genius for pete's sake! c'mon people. steven seagal makes movies like this, it doesn't automatically make it great if it comes from japan!

is this what they call subjective journalism then?

shame on bashir and shaw for being completely one-sided and prejudicing michael jackson before they ever even started shooting. it's clear they had only one idea; to make jackson look as bad as possible. i felt like i was sort of watching a sun tabloid. bashir is no better than any of the paparazzi's following. but michael wanted to be honest well there you go then.

i don't have an opinion about jackson in the issues raised on this document, since i can assure you I DON'T THINK I REALLY KNOW michael jackson after seeing this document. sure he seems strange and guilty of lying at points but no matter how hard you look you can't tell anything for certain about him, can you? please remember that when you start bashing him. meanwhile bashir catches every little mistake or a sign of "notnormaladultbehaviour", that jackson makes. "omfg he went on the stage early. holy **** he's climbing trees!" use your own brain, people and don't let bashir lead you.

"Propaganda is ... the deliberate attempt by some individual or group to form, control, or alter the attitudes of other groups by the use of instruments of communication, with the intention that in any given situation the reaction of those so influenced will be that desired by the propagandist."

oh, and btw ask yourself who is the craziest; weird michael, paranoid bashir, insane crying screaming dancing fans, or me for watching this document in the first place?

a movie wins a couple of prizes and kazaam it's a masterpiece.

oh yeah, let's just forget that the plot is completely unoriginal and seen many many times in the movie history. sure, the dialogue is witty and filled with dry humour as it always is in aki's movies. however this is only to distract from the fact that the movie is not really going anywhere. there's nothing interesting happening and as i said, the plot is just not good.

may seem exotic for someone who's not from finland, but it's nowhere near aki's best works. why did this one win the prizes then? *shrugs*

it's definately more worthy of watching than ANY of the hollywood motion pictures released appr. the same time, so 5/10 but please cut the praise since it's really not that great at all.

treasure of sierra madre is THE exception that defined the rules of Hollywood Glamour Time Motion Pictures.

no good guys, no bad guys, no racism, no religious bigotry, NO LOVE STORY (involving two human beings) believe it or not

BUT

an interesting psychological study, chess game, intelligent, surprising, REAL, and of course also a solid adventure

i was blown away. see it. 7/10

Spider-Man (2002)
4/10
nice try
5 December 2002
i couldn't be called a 'fan' of spider-man, but i've read my share of the comics when i was a kid. the movie certainly followed the early phases of spidey to the letter, but it still failed to really entertain me. or maybe because.

tobey maguire is a great talented actor, but didn't appear (to me) as anywhere near peter parker the comic character. same goes to willem dafoe and james franco...however all of them did a good job. willem dafoe's mirror scene is outstanding. the best performance i saw was kirsten dunst as mary jane. too bad her role was mainly to scream while hanging on rooftops.

there was some interesting dialogue, between mary jane and peter parker especially, but mainly the dialogue was trash, example being peter quoting his uncle in the most cheesy way possible. i didn't like the city scenes where spider-man moves from building to building, the computer animation is just too visible and tacky (in todays standards). green goblin was never my 'favorite' bad guy when i was reading these comics, the movie goblin actually seemed better to me. some of the fighting scenes are good stuff to watch even if you wouldn't like spider-man. infact, the fight scenes and mr. osborn's mental scenes were surprisingly brutal, i thought this was mainly a kid movie. the music of the movie was simply irritating hollywood orchestral thing. in the part of unexpected darkness, better than i expected, but still another superhero boom time creation. everybody wants to make a superhero movie now, hopefully we get a decent one one day, too. this one goes to the short list of the 'nice try's' (this is a good thing) along with tim burton's 'batman returns'. looking forward to seeing what daredevil is made of. at least then i get to see one of my favorite actors colin farrell playing one of my twisted childhood's hero figures, BULLSEYE :)

Dogma (1999)
1/10
no it didn't insult my beliefs, it insulted my intelligence
30 November 2002
i've never had religious beliefs, so let's forget that part. dogma is one of the ten worst movies i've seen. featuring poor acting, poor script, poor directing and poor lower body humour, adds up to something that isn't even worthy to take space on one's trash can. avoid this movie, trust me you have better things to do with your time.

Gosford Park (2001)
what purpose could it possibly serve?
22 November 2002
..as REPEATED in the movie, who did it is not important, forget it! enjoy the strong characters and study the interesting timing in the movie. gosford park reminded me of the old theatrically set drama series 'upstairs, downstairs' very much at points, but with a little more edge.

the actors did a fine job, i especially enjoyed watching richard e. grant, michael gambon and stephen fry at work.

gosford park is the most enjoyable movie i've seen about nothing in a long time.

i'm sure people who always want a good old fashioned railwaytracked story are going to be disappointed, people who didn't 'get' mulholland drive or amélie. but if you know how to just appreciate movies as art it's a good experience. it's not a perfect movie, whatever that is, but it certainly was enjoyable.

Paradox
22 November 2002
what an odd movie.

on the other hand it's the one of the few war movies i've seen that actually shows what happens in a war, which is insane death, not being a 'tough guy'. and it also shows a bit of all three sides of things. all respect for that. also props for (almost) leaving out the political situation of usa out for once.

on the other hand, it's quite poorly directed and full of 'perfect' people, perfect soldiers, perfect christians...saints...which gives a completely wrong image...

i don't know what to say except that it got my attention enough to think i will read the books and leave the movie be.

007 of the orient
11 October 2002
by the first few screens i thought 'what the hell is this crap' but after i finished the movie i was smiling. this movie can laugh to itself and it delivers an interesting

comedic bond parody ala orient. tony leung is dominating the movie in his role, everything else is just set decoration.

a better than average movie, that is if you can laugh about it too. recommended for people with a sense of humour.

small things in life make the big things
11 October 2002
Warning: Spoilers
this was a tricky movie to rate. ameliè is a small movie with a big heart. it reminds us dreamers not to spend our life dreaming of being something we're not, instead start enjoying what life has to offer today. and it reminds the disabled and depressed, that there is always hope. and it reminds the 9-5 class that they're forgetting to enjoy they're life. a nice idea. i myself knew these things already, i've looked my way already. i think ameliè could be a very teachful movie for some people, but unfortunately i think that the group of people (read: majority) will most likely not understand it and just ignore it. EDIT: looks like i was wrong looking at the imdb rating...weird.

ameliè has ok acting, yet nothing special, and i was even annoyed by some of the characters. the narrator was quite funny with the little details on everything.

*** WARNING: SPOILER ***

the most disappointing thing in the movie is, though, the way that it turns into a regular love drama/comedy in the end. i almost puked because the end was so bad. why? why?

*** WARNING: SPOILER ***

oh well, i'd still recommend you see it, as a movie, average, as a lesson, priceless.

interesting 'blue moment' sci-fi
11 October 2002
Warning: Spoilers
*** CONTAINS SPOILERS ***

philip k. dick has been a popular writer to be used for a script, some of the movies turning out good, some not so good. i was a little afraid about tom cruise getting the lead role for minority report, but luckily he didn't blew it. but still, something tells the fact that the side roles were much more memorable, for example agathea the freaky woman and peter stormare's crazy dentist character. max won sydow was downright lame in his role, and the woman playing cruise's wife had no purpose whatsover there, but sure she has to be there. the other cops were pretty good actors, except for the wuss in the tank with the freaks. colin farrell is starting to get to my favorite actors list (like i had one), he's excellent as the annoyingly eager detective. tom cruise is, well, tom cruise. maybe a little better, older, not so cocky tom cruise.

steven spielberg, in my opinion, is starting to move into another level of directing. his latest films a.i. and minority report have been interesting, both up until the last 20 minutes or so. stevie is just too optimistic, otherwise okay, heh.

i can't say enough about the beautiful cinematography, which fits more than well into a dickian world. the special effects are splendid, i especially liked the scene where cruise jumps from a car to another. and the best thing is, the computer graphics don't steal the movie, but serve a purpose well.

the plot was clear and somewhat predictable, and after seeing the movie i started wandering about a few things. first, how was the murderer able to murder the detective without

the machine giving any balls? i understood how he spoofed the

first murder, but not the second, the eye detection system. do you think sunglasses, contact lenses and blinking your eyelids will become illegal in the near future, steven? third, the miraculous thinking metal spiders that didn't fit into the movies near future theme at all. they were more like, oh i dunno, 3054's?

a beautiful film to watch and listen, features action, drama and darkness, just, if you'd add a little unpredictability, then we might use the recepy again to make one helluva movie. watch out for some crazy fast dialogue and background gimicks by the way, there are some funny moments that go by as fast as in the simpsons.

a surprising film in a sense that i can really recommend it for anyone to see.

Fist of Fury (1972)

underrated here but i think i know why...
11 October 2002
...most of you have seen the dubbed, cutted version. this review is for the uncut version.

bruce lee makes his most memorable performance in this excellent martial art film. the main character is not the perfect kind forgiving guy you always see in these types of movies. he cannot forgive all he can think of is revenge. he's even prepared to kick down some innocent people on the side if need be to achieve his goal.

martial art movies often suffer from the same problems as porn movies do. the lack of a decent plot.

in this one bad guys are really bad guys, the good guy is like 'the punisher', shows anger in every turn but is unable to show his emotions towards his girlfriend. here even the ending is an unconventional one.

a very good film, compared to the remake with jet li bruce lee's movie loses in great fighting scenes, but wins in attitude and depth. jet li wasn't very believable as chen zhen, but you can see the fire burning in bruce's eyes in every single screen.

the future of television (hopefully)
28 August 2002
in band of brothers war is viewed quite realistically, in my opinion, and more importantly from all angles, not trying to make any side more evil or more heroic than it was, just showing what did happen. showing the real veterans interviewed is a great plus bringing credibility to the series. acting, directing and editing are all good. i'd like to see more quality series like this with good crew and actors.

the biggest minus in my book was the character developement, or the lack of it. there were too many characters, bringing these replacement men in all the time. only character that was really well developed was nix. i didn't like the cheesy theme music either, but that's irrelevant.

a great piece of tv no matter what.

water coming out of my eyes watching this. although kind of sad, the people are still extremely strange that's what made me laugh.

btw someone mentioned journalism should be objective. in other words, BORING. an objective journalist isn't worth much. sure he can be on the news or something but a good journalist makes stories that will arouse conversation.

another good idea poorly executed
27 August 2002
with the right crew this could've been so much better. the idea about the house is a pretty good one, but unfortunately this movie repeats all the cliches of the genre.

ofcourse there is a bunch of people involved, from whom you can instantly see who are there just to die, who are there to be saved, who are the bad guys, who are the 'comic' sidekicks and who are the heroes. the ghosts are viewed in a very old way and they're not scary at all more like pathetic. it's just so predictable and corny you might as well pass it. i'm sure everybody's seen all this before.

the acting is lower mid-class but what really bugs me this was a pretty decent idea, and they ruined it.

a silly movie. see something else.

it's really a shame to see richard chamberlain in such utter trash as this. the whole thing is a copy of indiana jones, except it's all done wrong. the dialogue made me want to vomit, some of the worst trash i've ever heard was said in this movie, the horrible re-added voicetrack sounded awful and was not in sync, the directing was just plain bad, etc etc etc

urgh urgh urgh and urgh skip this one

it's hard to even figure out things to say about this movie. it doesn't exactly suck, but it isn't good either. it just is. drowns in it's own mediocreness.

it's a story i've seen many times before and there's absolutely nothing surprising happening. *yawn*

shallowness shines through
15 August 2002
first off, the acting is really horrible. the only decent performance is the main couple, but sjeez, where did they pick up the actors?

also at times the movie seems like an excuse for a selling soundtrack, which i believe it partly is, too, and that is just unacceptable.

on top it might seem like a movie that means well with the kid experiencing his first love and being deeper than everyone else, but the money that's in the producers eye just klings away in the background.

From Hell (2001)

a little confusing
15 August 2002
this is the first time in a long while when i missed having subtitles that would've cleared the whole thing a bit.

there were just too many characters and everybody had something to do with the killings but atleast for me it always remained a mystery exactly what.

none of the actors really shine. it's safe to say even johnny depp isn't at his normal level.

one good thing about this movie is the cinematography. there's just enough light to view it at daytime, but it looks fantastic in cinemas. for example, you could barely see das boot, the german sub movie even in cinemas. and this type of movie necesseraly needs a dark athmosphere.

so points for that but otherwise i was left with a feeling of unsatisfaction. it all just seemed quite pointless. as it really was.
